Hey there, I just wanted to expound more on your point on why it's more painful in certain areas (from a nursing/medical POV)! Pain tends to be worse around bony prominences (knees, elbows, shoulders, ribs, fingers, etc.) because the nerves tend to lay closer to the bones and joint areas and where there isn't a lot of muscle and fat tissues, the nerves are more exposed and therefore more sensitive to pain than say the calf area or the front of the thigh.
yeah! no problem. I mean we have nerves everywhere, even in the layers of our skin, but the bigger more major nerves are deeper towards the bone. So when there's no "cushioning" it just hurts like a mother XD
can agree. I had a shoulder tattoo and everything was merely cat scratches until the artist went closer to my collarbone. Could feel the needle hammering the bone with newfound face-twisting pain mixed with cat scratches.
How interesting! I personally don't know why that is, but pain for everyone is different. So if it's the opposite for you, then that's how your nerves perceive the pain. There is also something to be said that we have nerves of all sizes everywhere (up close to the skin where our hair follicles are all the way down to the bone), and that may also be between muscles. For example, there is a really big nerve the goes from the groin area down across the butt muscles and into the legs (sciatic nerve) that can make the butt a very painful area to be tattooed.

Here’s a good tip to think about while you’re getting your tattoo and its painful Tell yourself that it isn’t dangerous pain. It’s pain, but it’s not dangerous pain. It helped me allot!
I watched this before my first tattoo. I'm now four deep, with appointments for five and six upcoming, and have to say there's a ton of good advice in this video. The one thing I'd add is that some kind of physical distraction - gum, or a stress ball - can be a huge help. @@prahdavenchy8662 Good to hear. My first didn't hurt either, though all four since have been painful to a lesser or greater degree. But all manageable.
Simon Evans I got my first tatts at age 18. 23 now. Have about 10. Nice sized to. I told myself it won’t hurt and don’t be a pussy. It worked- they actually didn’t hurt... Both sides of my neck done, finger, hip bone & around the hip bone, shoulder bone, shoulder blade & back... and more. Nipple piercings, 4 different dermals, 6 diff ear piercings, both belly buttons (top & bottom.) Had my lip pierced as well. Nothing was that bad besides the first nipple. I didn’t pass out but wooooo
@Hugo Amezcua Some of it will be painful, some won't. I found my inner bicep to be the sorest tattoo I've had so far. For me it's less about the location and more about the design - tattoos that need areas to be reworked several times are much more uncomfortable than line work or script where it's done in one pass. But we're all different. Anyway, it's all manageable. Prep right and you'll be fine.
My best recommendation to handle the pain is to focus on your breathing. Just relax and breathe deeply - yoga style. It actually helped me quite a bit during my latest tattoo.
That was me yesterday, did not sleep well, drove 4 hours to get to the shop... sat for 8 hours... got a tattoo hangover but got to drive back home again 😂 rip
@@Rainbow_Butterfly I ended up getting a nezuko tattoo on above my hand on the backside of it, I experienced the pain on the wrist bone (which I did not see it as a bad experience i think cause I was already use to the pain around the area maybe it was numb but I did feel a sma difference! Nezuko is from an anime called demon slayer if your curious. My next tattoo will be on the opposite arm in a few months, it will cover the whole forearm from wrist to elbow (on the soft side) EDIT: it took 7 hours. And it was the size of a playing card
@@robertgheorghe418 I just had my leg tattooed last week and gosh the wiping and the liquid they put on was so stingy.. it did hurt but not as bad I just had my phone to play with to take my mind of the pain
If fear of the pain is the only thing keeping you from getting a tattoo, just go for it! I was terrified and put it off for like 10 years, but finally went and got it done, and I actually ended up ENJOYING the way the needle felt. It was like stress relief. When he said it feels like someone scratching you with a needle, that is 100% accurate. There is a tiny bit of a warm/burning sensation that goes along with it, but it's totally manageable. I got mine on the outside of my forearm down near my wrist, was in the chair for about an hour, and I'd say the pain level was about a 2/10. There was one spot where it jumped to about a 3.5, but that was when she was going over the same exact spot for about 30 seconds. The pain is addicting. I can't wait to get more!
@@pimpnastyfunkychpimp. I did that multiple times and it was still enjoyable. Yes it hurts constantly, but at some paint the time just seems to turn into a big mush and suddenly it's over. Once you start again after a break it hurts again, but after a few minutes the time seems to flow again.
I have 12 tattoos, 4 big pieces, and for me I will never take a break during my sessions I’ve found that if I take a break my skin/ body thinks the pain is over so it settles down then when the needles hit again the pain is amplified, that’s just for me though
I agree about the breaks. I always try to avoid them as much as possible because coming back after a break is the worst part. But when I do a large piece I don't have much choice. If we're going to sit for 8 hours then I have to accept that the artist will want a lunch break about halfway through. It might be painful and hard for me as the client, but the artist has to concentrate and work for several hours straight and it takes a toll on them as well. So having a lunch break is necessary to keep their spirit up and make sure they can do the best job possible. I'd rather deal with the post-break pain than end up with a bad tattoo because the artist couldn't keep their concentration up.
I’ll never sit for longer than 4-5 hours. My pain tolerance can only go so far and I won’t push myself if I can’t handle it. Both myself and my tattooist are fine with booking another session to finish things off. My longest tattoo was 4.5 hours on my entire forearm from elbow to wrist. Almost gave up toward the end; felt like my arm was gonna fall off from the shading 😂
Yeah I'm exactly the same, but I'm getting half my chest covered on the right peck, sternum and just under each collar bone and I'm just gonna take as little breaks as possible hahah
Getting a tattoo feels like a needle being dragged across a light sunburn along with vibration. But like he said it’s like you know in your mind that it doesn’t necessarily feel good but it doesn’t hurt enough to where it causes an actual reaction you just sit there and deal with it. In my opinion it’s so worth it after it’s done. I agree with everything he said he described getting a tattoo perfectly.
... this will sound weird.. but, i find it best to “run to the pain”... ie, accept that it might hurt, and embrace it.. if u try to run from it, it will win..
Kramer 1 exactly . My first couple tattoos I ain’t know what to expect so they hurt like fuck but as I went on and the more and more I got I just anticipated the pain and literally watched as the needle hit my skin and the whole process and it seemed to take away from the pain. Was more focused on the art than the pain
As I've been saying this whole quarantine: the best pain is tattoo pain. Hence my desire for my next tattoo after getting tattooed 3 1/2 months ago (2nd tattoo)
Just got my first tattoo last week (inner bicep), and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. My artist is so talented and so chill; we were talking throughout the first hour of my 2-hour session. I was shocked at how much less painful it was than I was expecting. I was super comfortable for the first hour and 40 minutes- of course there was some pain, but at the worst moments, I’d probably describe it as scratching a 3-day-old sunburn. The final 20 minutes or so, I started to get sleepy (I was lying down, I think my brain was just getting impatient) and thirsty, and I started to feel the pain a bit more as she went back to touch up a few spots with shading. But overall, seriously totally tolerable. Dare I say enjoyable. Don’t let worries about the pain deter you! Also, great advice about prepping for the big day. I made sure to sleep well, stay hydrated, and eat two good meals leading up to my evening appointment; I think that definitely helped!
mareeeann0987 yess!! I got my first tattoo on the inner part of my forearm and it covers the whole inner forearm for 6 hours and the artist kept wiping it with the paper towel.
I got my first tattoo yesterday. It takes up my whole shoulderblade. The most amazing part was the wiping! My artist uses a cold damp towel. Its cool, soft.. so relieving. 😍
I had a old school flash artist in the midwest use a dry paper towel, he wiped so much he rubed most the stencil off and screwed it up with free handing, had it fixed and made better years later, but man i will never forget it....
Always hydrate!! Hydrate! Hydrate! Start hydrating days before, and during the session. Your body has better blood, and no caffeine or very little because it is dehydrating and can cause hypersensitivity. Finally you must breathe. If you need to put in headphones and listen to meditation tapes or something. Holding one’s breath decreases blood flow, so when you do breath blood rushes to the painful area and makes the whole thing hurt so much worse.
Oonagh72 that's what I was told. I got my first tattoo on my left forearm from wrist to elbow and days before I had my artist draw it up and he said to drink water like I'm a fish. So I did and continued while getting my tattoo, sure I had to pee but the pain and the healing went by fast. Couldn't be happier 👍🏼
i was drinkin a big ass coffee before both my sessions, first one i passed out, this second one i was drinking a bit more water before hand and only felt slightly light headed, taking a break during the session helps a lot.
A little over 2 hours for my first one yesterday and the wiping towards the end started to hurt but what bothered me the most was how much my ass hurt from sitting
The worst thing I've endured since getting tattooed is the damn itching when it heals. My pain tolerance is very high but when it comes to the itching, wire grill brushes start looking real good 🤣🤤
I am so glad to have found this video as I am about to get my FIRST tattoo. I am SO nervous but I am finding comfort and relief knowing that it is going to hurt but where I am getting it, won't be so bad. So I am thankful for this video.
thanks. i only have pics of my tattoos in my videos if it's relevant to the subject, like the saturation vid and the freehanding vid. later i'll start vlogging tattoo sessions so people can check out my process and see more of my finished artwork
I went in and was going through a design then asked where it would be best pain wise and the guy freaked out, asked me to take a board with nails and hit myself over and over again then come in again and meet. It really made me feel bad and put me off getting tattooed for awhile. I just appreciate getting information about everything.
Hours in when they dry wipe I just have to look forward to the needles it burns way more than tattoos. I got blasted with 9 needles for 5 hours worth of shading in grey Color and about hour 4 I was looking forward towards the needles again lol.
With my tattoo artist he has a mini fridge full of free water and he suggests to get a bottle just to stay hydrated. He also asks if I'm ok and if we need to take breaks even though I don't move or flinch (I have half a sleeve and both hands done). But, artists are looking out for you and they understand if it hurts or if you need to take a breather.
I got a 3 hr tattoo on my ribs and armpit area yesterday. Personally it didn't hurt me, I was able to sit through it fine. Everyone handles it different. So if you really want a rib tattoo or a painful area tattoo, I'd go for it! People handle things differently so see how it feels for you:)
Delores Emeagi it’s fine! It’s not fun but it’s definitely not bad at all. Capping the shoulder especially was not fun lol. Just go in there thinking it’s going to be an unbearable amount of pain and it won’t be as bad.. it was my first tattoo so I was flipping out but I sat perfectly fine for 3 hours with a profanity here and there lol. The last thirty minutes was the worst because he saved the worst two things for last lol. Shading and joints, not a good combo lol. But I swear it’s all worth it!!! Especially if you have a good artist
Delores Emeagi i’m getting my first tattoo as a half sleeve starting at the top of my shoulder on friday so reading this definitely helped me get over the fears
The shoulder is so calming honestly. I have surgery scars and tissue on my shoulder and I thought it was gonna hurt but honesty it hurt wayyy less than the chest
This made me feel confident to go get a tattoo 😂 I’ve given birth twice, I’ve given blood (and hated it) so many times, but I have a massive fear or needles in general. That’s what’s always held me back.
Agreed I've been going wild with tattoos this year. I got a half sleeve done with pieces that connect to my back and chest. I've done 4 sessions with that at about 6 hours a piece. I just did a calf piece 2 weeks ago, that took 5 hours and I hated every second of it lol
My short answer for this: It feels pretty much how you think it would feel. It's not that bad, you're not gonna feel anything unexpected.. but of course it feels like it sounds.. a fucking needle being dragged across your skin. But you'll calm down after a few seconds and it will be pretty cool and exciting
sun leo Mine is right on my collarbone and it honestly didn’t hurt that much. More of a pinchey feeling than anything. I went into it expecting it to hurt way worse than it actually did.
I dont get these type of comments... Annoying vibration means what? Yea it is annoying, its annoying how it hurts... Your comments just doesnt make any sense.
*thinking about getting my first tattoo on my ribs* Him: The most painful place is.... Me: *please don’t say the ribs, it’s gonna be ribs*. Him: ....the ribs UPDATE!!: I got my first tattoo yesterday on my *rib cage* of a medium sized sun and moon face. It was not bad at all! Pain was literally 6 or 7/10 depending on the spot and if my artist was shading. The most annoying part was breathing because I had to control my breathing as she was on the ribs and the vibration! My tattoo artist was also very pleasant and gentle so I’m not sure if that helped. But I LOVE IT!
Mya Dixon if it’s small your good. I wouldn’t do a huge piece on your ribs for your first tattoo. Anywhere on a bone hurts like shit. My wrist and elbow hurt. Never got my ribs done. I can’t imagine it’s not fun
Ribs suck bad the feeling from everyone I know in the game plus my own is you wanna puke piss and shit at the same time ur body doesn't know what to do it's so bad
When I get into the 4 hr mark and I'm ready to pull my hair out I always try and think "okay chill out you're hurting like hell right now but it's going to be beautiful afterwards and so worth it" and that usually helps me calm down a little. Just thinking about how happy I will be once it's over with and I have a piece of art forever
Ashley Mayer that's the right attitude. The pain is temporary, and how you handle it will be permanently displayed on your body. Just gotta go to your happy place and deal with it lol
I had to do that in the first minute of my second tattoo cause he went over a sensitive spot but after a moment of "chill it'll be worth it and you've done worse on your own" I was fine. I can't wait to get my next one which will be on my collarbone. Me and my best friend are getting "always" together
Searched for this video after I passed out during my fourth tattoo yesterday. Definitely scary but you totally reassured me that I'll be ok if I try to finish the tattoo. Definitely subscribing.
I got a tattoo recently, my first in fact, on the inside of my forearm, and I was actually ok with the precision needle and line work. Like, it definitely hurt, but I was perfectly fine just sitting there watching the artist work once I had a grip on how the pain feels and got used to it, even when the needle was close to my elbow and wrist. But we took a break roughly an hour in… I guess so I could process the pain or whatever. So I could let my body calm down a little. However, the second half of the tattoo, when he changed to the shading needle… yikes, the pain really spiked and steadily got worse until the very end where I was close to asking for a moment to collect myself. It felt like my skin was on fire where the artist was going back over details. But now, a few days later, the pain isn’t even a thought on my mind anymore and I’d maybe even be willing to get more later on. I remember being so panicked the morning of, and being slightly scared of what I was about to let happen to my skin for two hours. But now, I’m more happy to have the tattoo and the pain, imo, was worth it for a piece of art that I love.
I feel nauseous and want to pass out when a needle is intravenous but I've sat for 6 hour tattoos. The sensation is very different knowing the needle is just piercing the skin rather then going into the vein.
@@drewpahach9693 honestly just get a good sleep the night before. Eat well, and stay hydrated. Anything under the 2 hour mark is doable. The longer you sit you almost get exhausted just taking the pain. But the end result is usually well worth the experience and you'll be surprised at what the body can take when the adrenaline kicks in. Like I said getting blood drawn for me is a terrible experience but I've sat for hours being tattooed. You'll be fine! Good luck.
Me with a low pain tolerance who passed out 3 times during my tattoo still waiting to get finished hearing people able to sit for 8 hours w no problem ...... 👁👄👁
Not dissing because I understand why it would happen but I’m glad I’m not like that, my last session was legit 11 hours. It’s always good to eat and be super hydrated when going in. Eat a big breakfast and be really hydrated, then take a break halfway and eat another meal and then just ride it out.
Pain Ladder :) They all hurt like a mother! Ribs is a bitch, for me the kidneys are worse, also back of the knee, sternum, top back of the thigh, bottom and elbow ditch.
Great video! One thing for women to keep in mind when making their booking is their cycle. Pain is more intense when ovulating, so you may want to consider that when making your booking, if you're in tune with your body clock 😊
You can get those peel off type of tattoos. They look real, dont come off but then you're missing out on the BMF tattoo experience that'll change you're attitude. Wouldn't recommend that shit unless your 10 years old.
I got all my tattoos in a 12 year period, had some hard parts but nothing hurt worse than my pectoral muscle on the chest. I'd been seeing the same tattoo artist for years and he said he'd never seen me that bad. I went white, was all clammy, shaky, grimacing in pain, having to take breaks every 5 minutes. We actually had to break it into a few sessions. I didn't care about the cost, I just wanted it to stop so I could come back another day.
it's brutal. i've literally considered socking my artist cuz the thought that maybe he was doing it on purpose crossed my mind. lol good thing i didn't
I love the feeling of getting tattooed, I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt. But after six months I just miss the feeling, the pain helps you reset in life it’s like therapy lol. Also make sure you want what your getting, the pain of regret is far worse than in the moment.
Wow, James, you are a intelligent man. Respect, almost 15 min of straight knowledge, despite the cuts, you are so composed and direct. I kept thinking this guy just talks, nothing is happening on the screen except your lips, if I may exaggerate, but 15 min flew by and I was educated. Thanks.
One thing. Your point about the time line being a factor, and you mention the skin being irritated or agitated being a reason. Totally agree. But I would add that there is a difference in pain when being tattooed by a liner or a shader. When it's 5 hours in, and your skin is healing from its open wound, and your tattoo artist is adding shading for the 20th time on the same spot, my blood stopped dripping, rather it was oozing out.... The pain 😱
I was told it would hurt like a super bad sunburn😂 it felt more like that annoying sting when you accidentally rub a minor sunburn (I had sun poisoning a few months back and that was absolute hell). I got mine first yesterday on my forearm and I can honestly say that trying to pull the tape off my arm was so much worse than the tattoo..
Actually the best moment in tattoo is when tattoo artist stops tattoing you for a couple of seconds. Such a relief! Especially when you're in real bad pain! It really hurts when needle touches any nerves. That's why my smallest tattoo on the inner arm, that took like 15 minutes, was yet the most painful one. Even almost 2 hour tattoo session on shoulder/biceps wasn't so bad
I've never been scratched by a cat so I can't compare it to that. However, I personally think the tattoo needles create a sort of scratching, stinging and burning feeling. The pain was oddly calming, even though I made faces and got a really intense adrenaline kick. Also, I used to have a really bad needle/syringe phobia. It's better now, partly thanks to my tattoos and piercings. Syringes still make me very uncomfortable and panicky, but I don't react to tattoo needles at all. Piercings are a little more uncomfortable but I can still handle it just fine. So for anyone out there that has a needle phobia and considers getting a tattoo, but are afraid - don't worry. It's not at all the same. You can do it!
I got my sternum tatted and Jesus Christ, felt like he was drilling a hole right in the center. I was fairly skinny so it was vibrating the bone. I didn’t make any faces, but I pinched the sides of my seat that I permanently distorted the cushion.
"Once There Was An Ugly Barnacle, He Was SO Ugly That Everyone Died, the end" -Patrick Pinhead Star on my chest piece the sternum and collarbone were almost unbearable. Only time I thought about taping. Luckily every time I would get close he would stop to wipe.
well, fuck. i'm bony and planning on getting a tattoo on the right side of my upper chest. im also pretty sure i have low pain tolerance to begin with..... at least it's a pretty simple tatt- i think it will only take about 20-30 minutes. i'm nervous as hell; it's gonna be my first tattoo.
Binged these off and on for over 3 years before finally pulling the trigger on a half sleeve, thank you so much James! Thus begins my sleeve journey and this tattoo rabbithole I got myself into
This video initially psyched me out before my first tattoo. But once my artist put the stencil on, I looked in the mirror and was so stoked about how it looked it didn't even bother me. I think that plays a big part. The piece was a steam train with my son's name on it. He has a passion for trains and just knowing how happy he would be to see it was well worth the slight discomfort. Honestly the itchiness during healing was worse than the actual tattoo. Good video, and thanks for the insight.
My stomach tattoo was torture. It was terrifying and nearly sent me into shock. The chest and back aren't pleasant either. I find legs to be rather easy, as well as the forearms. The back of the neck is fantastic. There's no pain, just the vibration of the tattoo machine.

Who's here because they are getting a tattoo soon?
no? just me ok
FilthyRich me 👀
FilthyRich here! I’m also gettin a tattoo. And it’s on ma finger. A small one
SkyRiderZom_B got mine today it wasn’t that bad
Lmaoo me I’m getting one on my arm a half sleeve and I’ve been told by a lot of ppl that the wrist area is going too hurt
FilthyRich getting my 4th tat in three weeks, so excited 😎
"Make sure you sleep well"... me still awake at 3:25am (the morning of my tattoo) hahahaha
lol every time
That was me yesterday, did not sleep well, drove 4 hours to get to the shop... sat for 8 hours... got a tattoo hangover but got to drive back home again 😂 rip
Smart man
I stayed up for mine. Didn't hurt as bad
Omg Me too😂😂😂😂
I'm getting my 2nd tattoo on Monday! And i'm binge watching these videos lol.
this one will be a 5-6 hour session
Aha cool
How did it go?
@@brandonmeraz2440 went good! Going in for detail work soon on it haha!
What did you get done?
@@Rainbow_Butterfly I ended up getting a nezuko tattoo on above my hand on the backside of it, I experienced the pain on the wrist bone (which I did not see it as a bad experience i think cause I was already use to the pain around the area maybe it was numb but I did feel a sma difference!
Nezuko is from an anime called demon slayer if your curious.
My next tattoo will be on the opposite arm in a few months, it will cover the whole forearm from wrist to elbow (on the soft side)
EDIT: it took 7 hours. And it was the size of a playing card
My pain tollerance is bad but Im too awkward to show pain to the artist so I suffer inside. I had a 7h tattoo session and sat through it all fine
Sasunake same lol
Saaaame! Haha!!
Want a cookie
Sasunake can you text me on insta and exsplain cause I’m 14 and gonna get one on my hand
I have a high pain tolerance. Did a big lion on my back- was 5 hours, $500. I didn’t take a break either
my longest tattoo lasted about 3-4 hours, and your comment about the wiping hurting more than the needle brought back flashbacks lol
mine was 2hrs.. the wiping didnt hurt as i got my right shoulder/back it was a large piece and gosh that was fucking sore.. got it done may 9
My second tattoo lasted 10 hours...I was exhausted...
@@robertgheorghe418 I just had my leg tattooed last week and gosh the wiping and the liquid they put on was so stingy.. it did hurt but not as bad I just had my phone to play with to take my mind of the pain
Yeah man...leg is painfull actually, i had my forearm tattooed, and it was ok but the shadow felt horrible painfull
it wasnt bad actually the leg apart from the odd twich i had.. i have it below my knee not close to the knee a bit down
Got my first tattoo today. Took 5 hours and pretty much everything the dude said in this video is very accurate.
This message right here... I'm definitely going to get one then but I swear to myself that if this is actually painful...😀🔫
A 7+ hour session is a different ball game though
Sit for 4 hours and you won't be enjoying it lol
Its different when you're sitting for several hours though...
I plan my tats so I never sit longer than an hour a day. I have anxiety when sitting still in general.
True my longest tattoo was 8 hrs long 3days ago lol and when you stop then continue its hurts like a B****
After awhile you can tolerate the pain lol li got used to it
Yea, that vibration is very prominent.
Yeah vibrations usually make me go numb, ich, or just irritate. I mean if its going for so long. Especially in one spot.
Agreed! It’s actually not bad relative to the results and the end is well worth it
To me it feels like being electrocuted over and over very quickly 😂
... this will sound weird.. but, i find it best to “run to the pain”... ie, accept that it might hurt, and embrace it.. if u try to run from it, it will win..
313Mally Bands Next time tell yourself it won’t hurt and that you’re not a pussy hahahaha
This is pretty good. I just got my first tattoo today and I just look at the ceiling and remember to breathe. Like I pretty much did embrace it
As I've been saying this whole quarantine: the best pain is tattoo pain.
When you hella jumpy but want a tattoo...
Jackeline Frost it’s really not bad
I wanna get a tattoo but I'm jumpy AND 13 so 😂
Temporary tattoos
@@seraphine2019 Those suck though 🤣
You can also ask your artist to apply some numbing cream on it, if you can’t handle the pain :)
I agree with the paper towel wiping being the worst part.
mareeeann0987 yess!!
the wiping was nice for me it helped with the pain on my shoulder
It sucks when they wipe it with a dry paper towel but if it is with a wet one it feels good.
Oonagh72
Nnl
i was drinkin a big ass coffee before both my sessions, first one i passed out, this second one i was drinking a bit more water before hand and only felt slightly light headed, taking a break during the session helps a lot.
Also, good vibes in the shop go such a far way
caffeine does not cause hypersensitivity lol
Loved that you added the bit about never tattooing a mother who didn’t sit well - that’s my pain standard, and I feel relieved now! Thanks!
THE WIPING!!!!!!! Oh my god!!!! Gotta resist so hard to not punch the artist lmaoo
minaj ee stallion yessss

On goddddd
XD
Luckily my artist wets his paper towel so it doesn’t hurt.
A little over 2 hours for my first one yesterday and the wiping towards the end started to hurt but what bothered me the most was how much my ass hurt from sitting

I sat 6 hours aha
I swear they make those chairs to take your mind off the pain! I move more because of chair discomfort than the tattoo!

The worst thing I've endured since getting tattooed is the damn itching when it heals. My pain tolerance is very high but when it comes to the itching, wire grill brushes start looking real good 🤣🤤
Honestly, me! 😂
Same here
Lol to true everyone asks about the pain but never about the itching myself included
Just slap it softly lol that’s what I do 😂

Feels like someone dragging a needle across your skin but since its something you want you get over it.
I am so glad to have found this video as I am about to get my FIRST tattoo. I am SO nervous but I am finding comfort and relief knowing that it is going to hurt but where I am getting it, won't be so bad. So I am thankful for this video.
“you stub ur toe and you dont cry you just curse”🤣🤣🤣
I don’t even curse I just stop and stare at it till the pain goes away 😂😂😂
Athan Gillespie ahaha
I still cry on occasion
I don’t know, I still cry whenever that happens
I just do some 'haah' sound and then I just watch videos to distract myself from the pain, never hurts that much though
You seem very knowledgeable about your profession. You should post some of your work in your videos.
thanks. i only have pics of my tattoos in my videos if it's relevant to the subject, like the saturation vid and the freehanding vid. later i'll start vlogging tattoo sessions so people can check out my process and see more of my finished artwork
“Cat scratch”

Why pin pricks? Cause I've been poked my sewing pins multiple times and bit by my sewing machine 4 different times
@@Rainbow_Butterfly that has to suck
I went in and was going through a design then asked where it would be best pain wise and the guy freaked out, asked me to take a board with nails and hit myself over and over again then come in again and meet. It really made me feel bad and put me off getting tattooed for awhile. I just appreciate getting information about everything.
💀💀💀💀
The wiping feels good to me, the cold wipe on the “burnt” area is amazing
When they wipe with the dry paper towels it hurts so bad after a while but when they put a cool liquid on it then wipe feels like heaven
When my artist wiped with the cold towel it’s like the sigh of relief where you can chill for a second and then keep going
You've never had someone who dry wiped... Feels like sandpaper on a sunburn
Hours in when they dry wipe I just have to look forward to the needles it burns way more than tattoos. I got blasted with 9 needles for 5 hours worth of shading in grey Color and about hour 4 I was looking forward towards the needles again lol.
Why would anyone dry wipe if they know it’s much worse lol
With my tattoo artist he has a mini fridge full of free water and he suggests to get a bottle just to stay hydrated. He also asks if I'm ok and if we need to take breaks even though I don't move or flinch (I have half a sleeve and both hands done). But, artists are looking out for you and they understand if it hurts or if you need to take a breather.
Can’t explain tattoo pain because it is COMPLETELY different for everyone.
I always say "very forgettable pain"
Best description ever lol
I find the sitting still harder than the pain lol...
ukguy haha totally agree
@Tia brown sameeee
Tia brown ye the wrist hurts lol that’s what I found anyway and I have loads done but wrist for me was bad
Sitting for long than an hour is soooo hard for me. I have to plan my tats accordingly to not annoy the artist haha
Yup
“Upper outer arm hurts the least”
Exactly what I needed to hear, where my first tattoo is going tomorrow😂
How was it?
Victoria Nee the think shading doesn’t hurt at all were as outline hurts like a bitch
This made me feel confident to go get a tattoo 😂 I’ve given birth twice, I’ve given blood (and hated it) so many times, but I have a massive fear or needles in general. That’s what’s always held me back.
It does really look like a medical needle so you should be able to trick yourself 😁.
the wiping of the paper towel after about 3 hours definitely gets irritating! worst part of my last one
The artist needs to be gentle with the paper towels
Best advice I could give :
They hurt, get over it. You'll get the love or you'll give up.
From my experience, it's not the intensity of the pain, it's the duration. Anything over 2-hours is tough.
Agreed I've been going wild with tattoos this year. I got a half sleeve done with pieces that connect to my back and chest. I've done 4 sessions with that at about 6 hours a piece. I just did a calf piece 2 weeks ago, that took 5 hours and I hated every second of it lol
going for a 5 hour session on my forearm in 10 days super excited but lil nervous
@@ryanprisco9871 Just did a 2-hour session to removal a tattoo. Just watch a movie dude
You absolutely have sold me on getting my first tattoo.
My short answer for this: It feels pretty much how you think it would feel. It's not that bad, you're not gonna feel anything unexpected.. but of course it feels like it sounds.. a fucking needle being dragged across your skin. But you'll calm down after a few seconds and it will be pretty cool and exciting
It feels EXACTLY like someone is scratching you with a paperclip (pushing hard enough that it’ll hurt but not too the point of bleeding)
Kenzie Shea OWWWWWWWWWW
Omg you’re so right. But 10000x faster & with vibration lol
sun leo Mine is right on my collarbone and it honestly didn’t hurt that much. More of a pinchey feeling than anything. I went into it expecting it to hurt way worse than it actually did.
I just went and grabbed a paper clip and tried this.. lmfao if that’s all it is then I’m set 😂 2 days away from my tattoo
Ashlee Minor I just got mines like 3 days ago! It’s not bad feel more like a cat scratching. . I got mines on my ankle
Your videos are very detailed and informative. They are a must-see for people who are considering getting a tattoo. Excellent job, man.
This video is the most spot on factual tattoo video. Pain tolerance build over time. The pain is temporary for a bad ass tattoo for life.
this video was fkn overwhelmingly informative. Thanks for this man
Finally someone who understands the wiping is sometimes the most painful shit ever 😂
to be brutally honest I wouldnt even call it painful for 90% of the areas, it's more uncomfortable as its a constant sort of vibration
ᄒLeviathanᄒ pretty damn accurate
Agree. And towards the end it becomes so annoying I wanna kick the machine and say STOP
Nah that shit is straight up painful af
I dont get these type of comments... Annoying vibration means what? Yea it is annoying, its annoying how it hurts... Your comments just doesnt make any sense.
Amazing explanation from an actual expert
*thinking about getting my first tattoo on my ribs* Him: The most painful place is.... Me: *please don’t say the ribs, it’s gonna be ribs*. Him: ....the ribs
UPDATE!!: I got my first tattoo yesterday on my *rib cage* of a medium sized sun and moon face.
Ribs suck bad the feeling from everyone I know in the game plus my own is you wanna puke piss and shit at the same time ur body doesn't know what to do it's so bad
the outlining on the ribs isn’t too bad but the shading is the worst part:(
*no*
Getting my first tattoo in 2 days, on my rib 😂
This is so accurate! The wiping and the getting worse after the artist takes breaks, flashbacks 😩
My rib tattoo took 2 hours and I was so ready for her to finish! When she told me, we were done, I was like “Thank God!”
Chancey Nalley Only 2 hours? Must have been tiny
You’re lucky I still have 1,5-2h left on mine, first session was 3,5
I faint almost every time I get my blood drawn, but have never had that problem while getting any of my tattoos.
Feels like a needle scratching your skin thats because it is a needle scratching your skin haha
No it's a needle puncturing your skin.
Literally one of the best explanations of tattoo pain I've ever heard. Great video!
You explained this better than I think anyone could have thank-you so much for all the info and thorough explanation
I watched this before getting my tattoo and I found comfort in it. So thank you James! I was one of those people that went "omg thats it?"

i got my second one done, but i realized that it was more painful to get my tattoo on my upper right back rather then my upper left O.O why is that
nikki naval I'm not sure why it happens, but I experienced the same thing on my back. Both sides hurt, but one was worse
Searched for this video after I passed out during my fourth tattoo yesterday. Definitely scary but you totally reassured me that I'll be ok if I try to finish the tattoo. Definitely subscribing.

He has the cole sprouse teeth 😂
Watching this during quarantine cause imma get a secret tattoo 😭
I feel nauseous and want to pass out when a needle is intravenous but I've sat for 6 hour tattoos. The sensation is very different knowing the needle is just piercing the skin rather then going into the vein.
Scales i’m very scared because last time i got a blood draw i passed out any advice for me
@@drewpahach9693 honestly just get a good sleep the night before. Good luck.
Drew Pahach Tell yourself it won’t hurt and that you’re a badass. That worked for me. Eat a light meal & sugar and drink water
You were right on about the feeling of the pain being scratched by a needle. It was a piece of cake getting my first tat. Thanks for the info.
Going for my first one tommorow I have anxiety but I’m gonna do it this video helped a lot 😊
Headphones and music is the best option
Me with a low pain tolerance who passed out 3 times during my tattoo still waiting to get finished hearing people able to sit for 8 hours w no problem ...... 👁👄👁
Not dissing because I understand why it would happen but I’m glad I’m not like that, my last session was legit 11 hours. It’s always good to eat and be super hydrated when going in. Eat a big breakfast and be really hydrated, then take a break halfway and eat another meal and then just ride it out.
Lol that's so funny why I wonder did u pass out 3 times
Have a few beers, a little xanax, you will be fine.
The first tattoo I got was a big peice on my ribs. Thought I’d start out with a super painful place and “work down” the pain ladder lol
some people are straight g's and do it this way. i, however, am the opposite. been avoiding the ribs for as long as i remember haha
is that the most painful place
pretty much
Pain Ladder :) They all hurt like a mother! Ribs is a bitch, for me the kidneys are worse, also back of the knee, sternum, top back of the thigh, bottom and elbow ditch.
peter pan what the heck do u have tattoos everywhere lol
Great video! One thing for women to keep in mind when making their booking is their cycle. Pain is more intense when ovulating, so you may want to consider that when making your booking, if you're in tune with your body clock 😊

What really hurts for me is the waiting time for the healing process. Lol

Whale8Ginna frr????????
I got all my tattoos in a 12 year period, had some hard parts but nothing hurt worse than my pectoral muscle on the chest. I'd been seeing the same tattoo artist for years and he said he'd never seen me that bad. I went white, was all clammy, shaky, grimacing in pain, having to take breaks every 5 minutes. We actually had to break it into a few sessions. I didn't care about the cost, I just wanted it to stop so I could come back another day.
Watching this after I just got my 5th tattoo. He's spitting facts!
You're totally correct about the wiping part hurting more XD.... I hated it when my artist would wipe mine about 2-3 hours into mine
it's brutal. i've literally considered socking my artist cuz the thought that maybe he was doing it on purpose crossed my mind. lol good thing i didn't
I don't think he would've appreciated that XD
i've found it's way better if the paper towel is soaked in warm water, which unfortunately isn't always the case.
I always think that part is the most relieving. Lol it's like a breath of fresh air after feeling like your body is on fire 😂
My artist always sprays cold soapy water on a paper towel..... XD
I love the feeling of getting tattooed, I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt. But after six months I just miss the feeling, the pain helps you reset in life it’s like therapy lol. Also make sure you want what your getting, the pain of regret is far worse than in the moment.
I’m giggling while watching this. Last year I finished my side piece that goes from my right elbow to my right hip. Took 56 hours. It’s worth it
To me it feels like rose thrones scratching you or dragging
PizzaFries well that’s painful
Getting my first tattoo soon, wish me luck!!
Wow your a tattoo vergin how cute haha lol
I wish ya luck
@@zarsiw how it go 👀
@@cody1016 i was set to have my appointment about 2 weeks ago, but my tattoo artist stopped responding to me so i still haven’t gotten it :/
@@zarsiw find a new artist if he/she can't even keep up with their appointments.
Binged these off and on for over 3 years before finally pulling the trigger on a half sleeve, thank you so much James!
Thus begins my sleeve journey and this tattoo rabbithole I got myself into
He is so right about the wiping the ink hurting more than the needle after about 4 hours
The back of the neck isn’t so bad buttt the back and around the spine hurttts like helllll.
The detail you went into here was so good, you easily earned a sub.
