    Funny thing, I've been getting tatted for about 25 years. I cannot remember anyone ever giving me any of this advice (eating a good meal, getting enough sleep, etc.). Through the years, I pretty much figured out some do's and don't's, just by trial and error. I appreciate the fact that you're advising people who may not know!
    What a great upload dude!!!

    I had my first tattoo, which is the start of a sleeve, two weeks ago and I didn't really bring anything with me other than headphones and a chocolate bar. I ate a huge breakfast an hour before my appointment and really I was full for the entire tattoo. I went into the tattoo not knowing what my pain tolerance was and the tattoo was from my elbow to the top of my shoulder.
    Honestly it was no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The only painful part was close to the armpit. I never needed my chocolate bar or my headphones. I kinda just sat there, talked with the artist a few times and mostly watched the other artist that did three tattoos that day. The day just flew by even without any entertainment (I only checked my phone when we took a break). My artist ended up saying that was the best anyone has sat for their first tattoo in 10 years for her, so that was pretty cool.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      that area of the body is one of the easiest places get tattooed, but even then it's hard to sit for an all day session. you'll prolly end up being heavily tattooed lol this is how it starts

      I just got my first one 4/21/2024 and I was able to sit there and just listen to music and stayed relaxed and I actually kinda liked how it felt the artist and my mom thought I was fucking crazy and also thought it was pretty funny too and we only had to take 1 small break for me to go to the restroom and he got it done pretty fast and it goes from the beginning of my right shoulder and just before my elbow

    The entertainment factor is where I can struggle sometimes. Don't want to be rude to the artist by not talking or joking around with them but when getting work done I like to get my headphones in and get into my zone. It's nothing against the artist just my way of getting myself comfortable.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Ryan nothing wrong with that. Being able to listen to loud music in your headphones probably helps with the pain too. A couple of people have asked me if they can wear headphones. I don’t take it personally and mostly assume that they are either in pain and can’t talk at the same time or don’t like hip hop, which is mostly what I have playing when I work

      Oh how I wish all clients were like you guys.. it's,so off off putting and distracting when clients keep talking, especially if they're someone who talks with their hands (hand movement expression alongside speach).. I had a guy the other day where I kept stating how important it was that he remain still, especially when I'm trying to execute straight clean lines.. he managed about a minute, at best..
      Some people talk out of nervousness I find.. it doesn't matter how much you try to set a relaxing atmosphere.. it's a deeper issue than ambient music

    It's so interesting to hear the experiences of tattoo artists. The artist who did my second tattoo has a hardcore "no friends/other people" policy due to some of the issues you mentioned. I completely get that - when I get a new piece, I want my artist to be as comfortable and happy as possible so we're both pleased with the result.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      alleycatfire yah some artists are definitely more strict on it than others. There are a lot of reasons we don’t prefer a lot of company besides what I mentioned in the video. It can become a circus real quick if there are several friends accompanying the client

    • @aquana
      @aquana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@JamesWithee It's weird because my tattoo artist seems to enjoy having company while working - me on the other hand, I absolutely *hate* it when I'm expected to talk while being tattooed. • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      aquana your artist could be pretending because they don’t want to be rude or because your friends are potential clients and they need more business. Or maybe they just genuinely don’t mind. Everyone’s different but in general what I said is very true. And yeah I can understand not wanting to talk if it’s on the ribs. Talking could make u move more too cuz you’d be breathing less steadily

      @@JamesWithee Ah sorry for replying so much, the stuff you say is really interesting :) I don't really bring friends but sometimes people stand around to chitchat and he genuinely seems to enjoy it! I'm so glad I have a great tattoo artist. He knows I can't sit long due to my bone cancer that I fought for 3 years. I told him my story and he took me in like a long lost family member. He keeps my appt times small in 3 hr range. I also had to wait a year after my chemo treatments and other things. He also let's me get up because he knows my bones are still healing and I can't sit long. I can lay down for a longer period but be knows I've had a partial hip replacement from the cancer so I can only lay one way. He's the freaking best but I also pay him more because of the time. He of course never asked but anyone willing to give me my sleeve and jump through every hoop to make that dream come true will get as much over as I can afford.

    I dont recommend carb heavy meals, you will crash and then get hungrier from the insulin spike rebound. (Btw, sugar is a carbohydrate). A better way to stay full would be something high in protein, fat, and fiber. So for example, a big steak, plenty of cooked vegetables, and maybe some whole grains like some quinoa or blue corn. One thing I wish was more common was the transparency in prices and time for different tattoos. Instagram is great for finding artists, but I wish I knew how much each piece costs and/or how long it took. I hate reaching out to artists and not knowing the price ahead of time. Idk maybe it’s just me, but even if I have money I would like to know so I don’t waste my and the artist’s time.

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i understand your frustration. to message an artist and have no idea if you can even afford to get tattooed by them is a waste of time for both of you if the rate isn't right. it's hard to say how much someone charges just from their ig cuz there are so many factors at play. i have a whole video about how an individual artist determines his/her price. check that one out and it'll prolly help, in combination with your experience after inquiring with several artists of differing skill levels in your area.

    You don't need a soap that is advertised as being antibacterial. All soap is antibacterial due to the uneven charge (one end is positive and one end is negative) of the fat molecules in the soap. This charge is what separates bacterial membranes and kills them. Soap marketed as antibacterial often contains additional chemicals which could promote antibiotic resistance, which is a growing problem worldwide. There is so much we don't know about many ingredients, so it is better to just use regular soap.

    I always have a tattoo ‘bag’ ready to go. Breath mints, deodorant, sugary drink, something to squeeze if the pain gets intense, headphones and good music, food for a break if I need it and cash. I usually smoke weed before I go in to relax me and so I’m content being bored for 4 + hours. And be prepared for the wiping to hurt more than the tattoo if it’s a long session.

    Hey I was wondering if you could do a video on touching up tattoos. Like making aged tattoos new again. Since I know all tattoos get a little or a lot blurry over a long period of time, I wanted to know the different outcomes of going back and getting it touched up. If you have had experience with that or generally know of it. It doesn’t have to be an entire video on it because I don’t know how much you could possibly go over. I’m into really detailed and realistic tattoos and I wanna know for the long run is it worth it if there’s a chance to “make it new” again.

    its more important that the tattoo artist is more comfortable than the client in my opinion only for the reason that you are going to be uncomfortable anyways, but he is the one putting this on your skin, for him to do his job effectively, he needs to be in a good mindset as well if not more!

      Nah don't let yourself get freaked out. Idk what you do for work so I can't really speak to that but I didn't have any trouble with my daily activities after my half sleeve. I have cats and dogs (plural to both lol) so I feel ya there but I didn't have any issues. I heal faster and swell less when I stay in motion honestly. I iced it at bed time but other than that I just followed normal aftercare instructions and did great. It will swell some so don't panic it's normal. Idk if that will effect your work or not but it'll subside in a day or so. His advise on homeostasis is solid! Helped me so much! Have a great session! Edit: Having a ride isn't a bad idea though. Not just the soreness but I kinda crashed from my ink high about halfway home so unless you're really close to the shop that's probably a good call

    Just curious - I'm someone who always made sure to carefully shave her arm with shaving gel before starting work on a sleeve and the result was always nice and smooth - do you really think it's better for an artist to do that for you at the shop? I've seen it done (mostly with guys) but I can't imagine that a dry shave with those shitty little one-use razors would have a better result than doing it comfortably with shaving products. Whenever I try to shave without them I get the worst razor burn lol

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      aquana I’ve only nicked maybe 3 clients throughout my career (all on areas where they had a moles or something sticking out), yet have had more clients than I could count come in with little cuts on their tattoo from shaving. They were almost all guys though so maybe they are only good at shaving their faces? Lol. Yeah I do think it’s better for the artist to shave it. Especially if that artist is me. I don’t dry shave or use shitty razors. Most artists use green soap to shave tattoos. Clients always make comments about how well it works when they see the hair melt off

    • @aquana
      @aquana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JamesWithee Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if it was a men vs. women thing. A lot of women shave their legs (which includes knees lol, if you can shave a knee without cutting yourself you can shave anything), armpits, private parts, hell, some of us regularly shave our arms too. After that, shaving for a tattoo is nothing special, we're used to working around the curvy parts. I can see how a guy who's never done that would mess it up though!
      Ah if you use soap that probably makes it much easier, I see why you want to do it. At my studio, the guys use those surgical skin prep razors and they go in completely dry. It hurts to look at lol

    • @JamesWithee
      @JamesWithee  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      aquana lmao true we don’t typically shave areas with as high degree of difficulty and over such a wide area like women do. It’s true that some artists dry shave it though. I had one dude put the soap on me, wipe it completely off, then start shaving. I cringed a little bit but he did a great job of gently removing the hair on my arm. Tattoo came out great

    James, would you think about doing a video just on the topic of weed and tattooing? Everyone kinda just glosses over it and i know that drugs and tattooing is a taboo subject and seems no one wants to touch it, but with it becoming legal in more places i think there might be some people who don't know how to bring it up to their artist.
    i got a wrist tattoo last year and of course i showed up for the appointment sober...but i found it very hard to keep my arm still, the placement seemed to make me twitch involuntarily and i decided i wanted to smoke a bit before my next wrist/forearm tattoo because i think i'll be able to sit better. I know weed doesn't numb the pain but it does have other properties....could it make it easier to sit still since you're more relaxed/less activated? i know it's so tricky because weed triggers anxiety in some people but if know yourself, etc....i just wanna know how i should ask my artist, or if i should. For reference im 32 and it's legal in my country. Would it make him uncomfortable to know im high? Would he feel better if i had a prescription?
    so basically a video on how to ask your artist about it, how artists really feel....it seems that weed gets lumped in with alcohol but i don't understand why...i understand why you don't want to put literal poison in your body before putting it through a tattoo, but smoking a little herb, or taking some CBD oil...?

      I would also like to see this. I have the same problem on my wrist, I found myself involuntarily clenching and moving which has never happened with anywhere else on my body I've had tattooed. I don't know if it's down to the nerves and veins in that area, but non the less I would like to know if weed would relax me for such sensitive areas

    At around the 23 minute mark: my most current artist free hands everything so we decide together what would look good while he sets his station up and I actually like it better that way. We have a dialogue about it and we must be on the same mind wavelength because our ideas always line up so perfectly. Then he pulls out some reference art books (I’m doing a nature “life comes from death” sleeve on my right arm and he is using native WA state plants / flowers for it) and goes to town with sharpies on my arm (he is like an insanely talented tattoo wizard). I’m pretty sure I’m going to be sticking with him for a while because I really do enjoy being involved in the design process and I’ve never had an artist free hand anything on me. He’s also the owner of the shop I go to so we have a private office away from the hustle and bustle of the shop so yeah. Very relaxing to be tattooed by him. I am sticking with him for a while.
