I am Trini and no disrespect to the Jamaican lady but curry and roti is two different things. She kept going on about the burning etc, that is not roti but the filling you put in it. Roti is the actual flatbread. In Trinidad we do various types- breakfast roti is usually Sada eaten with a vegetable talkarie* Dhalpurrie is usually wrapped with curried or stewed meats and a side & Paratha(buss up shut) is broken up so dipped into the curries and veg. Popular at weddings & celebrations such as Divali. It has others like Dosti, pepper roti etc but the top 3 are the most common.
All this. It hurts my heart when people act like roti is one specific thing. Or don't understand anything surrounding it. Reading all that making me miss my aunt's sada with baigan choka. And she don't know anything about slight pepper lol 😆 😂 😋
Thank you. I was confused because I consider roti just to be the bread. The other stuff can be eaten with roti... but actual roti is just the bread. Having said that, I'm up for a doubles throwdown.
You can clearly see she is a BLACK Jamaican woman. What you think she know about Diwali, Dosti an Dhalpurrie? - stop it, you're comment is too arrogant. Jamaica has it's own specific dishes and roti isn't a specialty. Yes the woman got the meaning wrong, it's just the bread- but everything else you mentioned is very INDO-Caribbean specific. Hell, even most Indo-Jamaicans don't do all that.
Its trinis, or maybe black trinis who a spread wrong info...telling the rest of the Caribbean that roti name Roti skin. Why didnt you guys correct them. I can tell you that if you give Guyanese buss - up- shirt, they will ask you if you head mad, and if you dont know to make roti. And its Trinidadians who first sold roti and curry wrapped up for workers in Trinidad, so blame yourself. Selling Indo originated food at restaurants and take out places is a more recent thing in Guyana, except the snack which were always sold at the roadside by any race.
I liked Addis. I thought she was going to rip on everyone, but ... she didn't. I love that she gave a 9.8. Great episode and now I want to try their roti. Looked delicious.

As a person who grew up in the caribbean. The Windward Islands st. Lucia, Barbados, st. Vincent , grenada, Trinidad, guyana are very under represented in a lot of “Caribbean” videos. Especially when we share a lot of similar dishes which some other islands, Jamaica for example don’t make. So a lot of the “caribbean “ videos are very hard to relate to sometimes.
Y’all have to remember this is filmed in the US. Jamaicans make up the highest immigrant population of all black people in the US. St. Lucia, Grenada, these populations are already small, let alone the number of immigrants in the US. Cocoa butter def seems to be trying their best.
@@rocksta201012 I’m aware of the differences in populations. But it doesn’t mean they’re that hard to find as ppl have been migrating and settling for years. It happens alot here in the UK where they usually use one country to represent/classify the entire Caribbean when there’s a lot of things the rest of us don’t relate to. I also love watching Cocoa butter’s content so I’m not dragging them just saying the “Caribbean “ content is usually very un-relatable.
@@athomewithkiara Actually in most of the US they are hard to find outside of the NY Tristate area and FL. In my experience Jamaicans and Haitians are the Caribbean cultures you can find all over the US
@Fm4lg lol.... Guyana is CULTURALLY Carribean. It shares many more similarities with all the Carribean countries. You can also look up CARICOM. But, if we want to get technical, roti was taken to MANY other countries, especially Carribean countries by Indian indentured labors. In 1838, the first ship arrived in Guyana from India. That's why we know a thing or two about roti, and it would've been justified to include a Guyanese person in the video. That's all...
As a Trini....I think they should've had more Trinis and Guyanese here in this video. No disrespect to the Jamaicans, nothing's wrong but I feel like we need more variation in the Caribbean themed videos, especially with the fact that Trinis and Guyanese have it on lock when it comes to roti
Good effort by everybody. 😋We all have special touches BUT I'm from Barbados🇧🇧 and for me, generally the BEST roti is from Trinidad🇹🇹 and Guyana🇬🇾. Would LOVE tho to taste Jamaican roti esp after watching this.
🇧🇧🇧🇧yessss I’m from barbados as well and I agree. I also enjoy our roti as well. I hardly hear about Jamaicans doing roti, I definitely think Trinidad is the best
Yes, Nikki we got nice one in Barbados too but lol my favs locally come from guess who? Indian, Trini & Guyanese living here. I also make an excellent curry but learned how from a Trini.😁 Those indo roots, man!
Trinidad makes the best roti in Caribbean. But nobody can beat the champions and creators of roti Aka east indians in india. India does the best roti PERIOD.
I love roti I’m from The Bahamas my aunt makes it good but the best one I had was from my 9th grade teacher from Trinidad she used to make it for our whole class when we do good on our school work.I fell in love with it from then
correct me if im wrong but that is NOT the trinidadian flag😳 i was mad confused when addis said she was half trini because that is not how our flag looks. the black and white lines are supposed to be diagonal🇹🇹🇹🇹 other than that i loved that the caribbean nations got a chance to show our culture, its much needed❤
I think Cocoa Butter should have done some research. People from the Caribbean ARE NOT called 'Caribbeans'. The proper terms are 'Caribbean People' or 'West Indians'. UPDATE: THEY CHANGED THE TITLE OF THE VIDEO.
@@lalalove9953 Yes it is. It's respect. Just cause YOU never heard people complain that doesn't mean people don't. Cocoa Butter understood its importance, hence they changed the title to the correct term.
It’s in the Caribbean because of East Indian indentured servitude. A lot of us Caribbean people, specifically in countries like Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Vincent are Indian descent or mixed with Indian.
Aye all yuh roti is a blessing anyhow you can get it. I noticed no one did a dhalpouri roti. Where all my Trinbago ppl! Trinidad! Where my ppl? lol Blessings!
Trinis and GTs make the best roti! I’m from SKN and I would never pass on my trini people roti no time. My best friend brings me roti skins from Trinidad every-time she goes down for a visit!
This needs a part two. When I think Roti, I think Guyana and Trinidad. Doing a Roti video without them in it, especially the Indian ones, is like doing a jerk chicken video without Jamaicans. This get a pass cause of the mixed girl who let her Trini friend help her. Jamaican roti look banging though, but as others, from Trinidad and Guyana said, roti is just the name of the flat bread, it can be made in many ways, some without curry.
I love when the Caribbean is represented, but I hate when our diversity isn't. This is the reason why when I say I'm not Indian, bur caribbean, I'm not believed. I'm disappointed that not atleast 1 indo-caribbean person wasn't included in this. Also, disappointed Guyana was not included in this.
The younger woman looked as though she might be partially of Indian descent. Second, this is a channel about the BLACK diaspora. So naturally it’s gonna feature black people.
Love this episode I feel everyone was respectful to each other and they judge according to their taste buds, so congratulation to the winner You did your thing, it's not necessarily say it's where you from you make the best roti. I think it have to do with the individual person who is making it. There's a lot of people who cannot cook certain food properly from their homeland.
I've been to Jamaican too many times to count and I'm Guyanese. Roti was not the thing that kept me going back. Plus, who says you have to eat Roti with anything? Roti is dish by itself, then you can add whatever side dish you want to eat it with. Y'all need a part two with the real Roti connoisseurs.
What flag did they have for Trinidad in the beginning???? Whichever country that represented was not Trinidad. This is the flag for Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
Man, I love roti so much. Best roti is made by people from Guyana and Suriname. Also, love Caribbean representation even though my representation is the Antilles 😅
This was SABATOGE. EVERYBODY KNOW TRINIS GOT THE BEST ROTI!. Daena said 7 BUT she KNEW it was a 10. And y'all see how she was gonna steal the pumpkin recipe too. What Sprangalang say "Jamaicans make a lovely jerk, BUT TRINIS GOT THE ROTI CORNERED!"
Why are ya'll so vague with grouping all Caribbean people together. You get Roti from someone from Trinidad/Tobago or Guyana. Full stop. If tried what some other islands try to call Roti and..... no. Also, we have different kinds of Roti. And why do you use so many Americans to represent Caribbean countries?
This video did not give what I thought it was going to give lol…every island has their thing and roti belongs to Trinidad 🇹🇹. A lot of the “Caribbean” island videos don’t really highlight other islands. I love Jamaica, but come on, since when they specialize in roti over Trinidad?!
Just like how Trinidad and Guyana and other islands have Indians in it so does Jamaica every Caribbean island have Indian in it, and therefore they're going to bring their culture with them and their food which include roti so every island do make roti.
@@Life-nb9zl I understand. I’ve been to Jamaica several times…all I’m saying is that Jamaica is not the only island in the Caribbean and that other islands should be highlighted too.
As a Jamaican I am happy for the winner however I also believe that Trinidadians make the best roti it's in their blood like Jamaicans make the best ackee and saltfish every island has its specialty...if you want a REAL competition have a contest on who makes the best stew peas.

I like Jamaican curry more than Indian curry. But I would try a roti from a Trinidadian over a Jamaican. My parents are Antiguan!!! Bless up to all my Island people 🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬
Its not Indian curry. Its Guyanese or Trinidadian curry. You get Indian curry from India. If you want a stronger tasting curry get the one from one of the two. You want a very light curry get the Jamaican curry. But I now even see Jamaicans putting whole spices in Curry which we dont even do in Guyana, like cumin
It makes me excited to know how curries and rotis came all the way from India to the Caribbean and found a new home. If I ever have to move back to the US and need to go somewhere for good food, it will definitely be the Carribean.
We put that delicious layer of seasoned split peas in the center. It's a pain to roll without popping but omfg it's amazing. I'm shocked that the roti itself doesn't have that split pea center tbh. It's rare for me NOT to see that but maybe because I'm used to home cooked roti I should add that my mom side of from trini.
Going through the comments and glad I’m not the only one that was expecting a Guyanese contestant, bc how you have a roti contest without us??! 😂🇬🇾🇬🇾 But also if curry was part of it as a whole dish why not just name it a “Curry and Roti” competition lol. If it’s supposed to be just plain roti being judged let it be roti lol, they’re not synonymous or required for the other. They all were taking points off for the curry but the roti was supposed to be the focus.

@@thelivingroom6172 no, they aren't. Roti is Indian only and Egypt isn't the only old civilization, Indian civilization predates Egyptian.
Yes, i agree 100%. I was gonna comment exactly the same thing. I personally couldnt identify with the look of these roti.
Y’all have to remember this is filmed in the US. Jamaicans make up the highest immigrant population of all black people in the US. St. Lucia, Grenada, these populations are already small, let alone the number of immigrants in the US. Cocoa butter def seems to be trying their best.
I agree 100000%
@@rocksta201012 I’m aware of the differences in populations. But it doesn’t mean they’re that hard to find as ppl have been migrating and settling for years.
It happens alot here in the UK where they usually use one country to represent/classify the entire Caribbean when there’s a lot of things the rest of us don’t relate to.
I also love watching Cocoa butter’s content so I’m not dragging them just saying the “Caribbean “ content is usually very un-relatable.
@@athomewithkiara Actually in most of the US they are hard to find outside of the NY Tristate area and FL. In my experience Jamaicans and Haitians are the Caribbean cultures you can find all over the US
A Roti contest and not a Guyanese in sight 😫🇬🇾 ya'll need a redo on this one.
and the original recipe owners, the Indians
That’s because we’d pull up with dhal phuri and they’d have no chance.
The contest was for Caribbeans not South Americans 😈
@Fm4lg lol.... Guyana is CULTURALLY Carribean. It shares many more similarities with all the Carribean countries. You can also look up CARICOM.
But, if we want to get technical, roti was taken to MANY other countries, especially Carribean countries by Indian indentured labors. In 1838, the first ship arrived in Guyana from India. That's why we know a thing or two about roti, and it would've been justified to include a Guyanese person in the video. That's all...
@@jas728xo I agree a Jamaican had no business in this competition and they should of had a proper full trini and a South American Guyanese 🇬🇾 😝
Channel is Buzzfeed. Its not a black owned or Caribbean owned Channel. They probably just hire two token black people.
exactly! idk why they need to have a Jamaican in ALL of these videos!
Next time they should have people from Suriname 🇸🇷 and Guyana 🇬🇾 as well.
I do not think they will find surinamese indians in the usa, they are there but i do not think they have a lange communiteit there
That was a nice one. People actually have constructive feedback. And not sounding Ike they were hating...
🇧🇧🇧🇧yass
Addis was a whole vibe. you knew exactly what the food was like with her reference to the frosted mini wheat 😂
I don’t know for anybody here but I just know Trinidad 🇹🇹 does make the best roti in the world!
how come more than India where it came from?
@@usnasi4439 exactly lol
Trinidad makes the best roti in Caribbean. But nobody can beat the champions and creators of roti Aka east indians in india. India does the best roti PERIOD.

I love roti I’m from The Bahamas my aunt makes it good but the best one I had was from my 9th grade teacher from Trinidad she used to make it for our whole class when we do good on our school work.I fell in love with it from then
*A SIX??!!!!* After you said all those good things? Smh that’s wild 😂 4:21
correct me if im wrong but that is NOT the trinidadian flag😳 i was mad confused when addis said she was half trini because that is not how our flag looks. the black and white lines are supposed to be diagonal🇹🇹🇹🇹 other than that i loved that the caribbean nations got a chance to show our culture, its much needed❤
You are not wrong at all. I said that as soon as they presented the young lady.
I said the same thing & went straight to the comments to see if I was tripping
Janine you are correct my dear. I knew something was off with that flag
I just noticed 😳 wowwww what a failure
Nope you’re right. I think that’s the Thai flag or something. @cocoabutter you got the Trini flag wrong ya’ll
I think Cocoa Butter should have done some research. People from the Caribbean ARE NOT called 'Caribbeans'. The proper terms are 'Caribbean People' or 'West Indians'. UPDATE: THEY CHANGED THE TITLE OF THE VIDEO.
Where did they call them Caribbeans
@@taylorbeaugard2456 It was the title before. They just changed it, I guess after being corrected. They also had is throughout the video as subtitles.
Is it really that serious? Never heard the older folk complain about this
@@lalalove9953 Yes it is. It's respect. Just cause YOU never heard people complain that doesn't mean people don't. Cocoa Butter understood its importance, hence they changed the title to the correct term.
True, I've only heard American people it just people living in America use that term
I gotta learn more about Carribean culture. These people are rad!!!
Jamaican ppl can mek Roti but nuh really mek Roti more than so. Trini & Guyanese probably mek it the best💯need a part 2🇬🇾🇹🇹
Let’s gggooooo with the roti & curry🫓
Love y’all but WHY 🇬🇾 not represented?
Y’all couldn’t find one of we? We everywhere
🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾FACTS
Yes I was expecting allya in there

Roti contest and no Guyanese 🇬🇾 in sight?? 👀.. are you having a laugh? 🧐.. this need a part 2 man 😴
Right I was looking for the Guyanese person
I said the same thing !
Right, I was looking for Trinidad and Guyana.
We needed some Trinis, the real pros at roti, that's our dish after allllll
I’m saying ! 🇹🇹
Real pros at actual roti are actual south Asians who made the dish lol 💀
As an Indian , Feeling so pumped up to see so many cultures have food similar to us. Even the curry - like chana masala etc - made me nostalgic.
It’s in the Caribbean because of East Indian indentured servitude. A lot of us Caribbean people, specifically in countries like Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Vincent are Indian descent or mixed with Indian.
@@b.m7640Roti is also in Africa...just goes by different names
Aye all yuh roti is a blessing anyhow you can get it. I noticed no one did a dhalpouri roti. Where all my Trinbago ppl! Trinidad! Where my ppl? lol Blessings!
Antigua an roti in the same sentence never heard that in my life 😳😳😳😳 where is Guyana doh 🤔
Trinis and GTs make the best roti! I’m from SKN and I would never pass on my trini people roti no time. My best friend brings me roti skins from Trinidad every-time she goes down for a visit!
Antigua in the building for once🥳🇦🇬 but even I was wondering why his roti looked like it had grilled chicken and was dry🤣
😂😂🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬 I made mine the first time recently but it was way better looking than that. I wish i had my family that could’ve shown me
🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬🇦🇬 but why is it grilled 😂
i was like “okay sir that chicken look likkle dry doh do antigua so” 😭 but at least we were shown for once
I love how everyone was sp respectful....I also never had roti. But I love a good curry
That isn’t the Trinidadian flag. Would love to see it corrected to the actual flag which is this : 🇹🇹
Guyana should have been represented here🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾
Agreed 🇬🇾✅
Exactly
I love when the Caribbean is represented, but I hate when our diversity isn't. This is the reason why when I say I'm not Indian, bur caribbean, I'm not believed. I'm disappointed that not atleast 1 indo-caribbean person wasn't included in this. Also, disappointed Guyana was not included in this.
Also, that's not even the Trinidadian flag.
The younger woman looked as though she might be partially of Indian descent. Second, this is a channel about the BLACK diaspora. So naturally it’s gonna feature black people.
I've come to terms that most of these platforms are not meant for indo-caribbean people even when they showcase indo-caribbean cuisine.
Same, and Suriname.
@@rocksta201012 please stop
Love this episode I feel everyone was respectful to each other and they judge according to their taste buds, so congratulation to the winner You did your thing, it's not necessarily say it's where you from you make the best roti. I think it have to do with the individual person who is making it. There's a lot of people who cannot cook certain food properly from their homeland.
Loved the ladies in this. Genuine and honest. The dude, not so much
Thank you!...every story has to have a villain.😉
I had no Idea indian food is so well traveled...very interesting.
I trust Addis opinion of Daena’s roti than Claude since she is actually half Trinidadian.
The title - we never refer to ourselves as "Caribbeans" it's "Caribbean people" , or "West Indians"
Slight tip: if your curry isn't thick enough, remove the shrimp from the sauce and continue to cook the sauce down then add the shrimp back in.
y'all couldn't find not one Guyanese?
Get a Guyanese person to bring their roti!
What flag did they have for Trinidad in the beginning???? Whichever country that represented was not Trinidad. This is the flag for Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
i was wondering if i miss something XD
Man, I love roti so much. Best roti is made by people from Guyana and Suriname. Also, love Caribbean representation even though my representation is the Antilles 😅
Shout out to India for setting the whole menu for generations to come
This was SABATOGE.
And don't forget Guyanese roti it's amazing 🇬🇾
Jamaicans make great Jerk, curry, rasta pasta, etc. Unnuh just have roti. 🇯🇲🇹🇹
You mean Indian ..
@@PrincezOSO Technically yes, But Afro Trinis are the Best because we go the MOST Indians in the Caribbean teaching us.
I love watching these but I like when they are blindfolded and have to eat their own food. Thanks for sharing .
Why are ya'll so vague with grouping all Caribbean people together. You get Roti from someone from Trinidad/Tobago or Guyana. Full stop. If tried what some other islands try to call Roti and..... no. Also, we have different kinds of Roti. And why do you use so many Americans to represent Caribbean countries?
we need a redo 💯
Im a trini and Jamaican and im addicted to roti. Trinidad 🇹🇹 would always have the best roti imo
I wish they had a whole TRINIDADIAN and Guyanese now that would have been some good competition
This video did not give what I thought it was going to give lol…every island has their thing and roti belongs to Trinidad 🇹🇹. A lot of the “Caribbean” island videos don’t really highlight other islands. I love Jamaica, but come on, since when they specialize in roti over Trinidad?!
It's just who made the better dish not the country
@@raziyahall9662 Yeah but Trinidad makes better roti than Jamaica (overall). Roti is not commonly eaten in Jamaica but it is in Trinidad.
never only roti i want trini or guyanese
Just like how Trinidad and Guyana and other islands have Indians in it so does Jamaica every Caribbean island have Indian in it, and therefore they're going to bring their culture with them and their food which include roti so every island do make roti.
@@Life-nb9zl I understand. I’ve been to Jamaica several times…all I’m saying is that Jamaica is not the only island in the Caribbean and that other islands should be highlighted too.
Addis ate the roti CORRECTLY 😂 Gotta use your hands and get in there man 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹 Big up the trini
Claude, I’m happy that you were representing Antigua & Barbuda 🇦🇬 even if you didn’t win. Our rotis look better but it’s ok.
His roti was super dry... Looks more like a wrap
As a Jamaican….I leave Roti, Dahl, BussupShot, Doubles to the TRINIs 🇹🇹👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Love my Caribbean people.
As a Jamaican I am happy for the winner however I also believe that Trinidadians make the best roti it's in their blood like Jamaicans make the best ackee and saltfish every island has its specialty...if you want a REAL competition have a contest on who makes the best stew peas.
None of the contestants seemed like they were outright hating which was refreshing but Claude went a little harsh on the rating in my opinion.
Roti episode and no Guyanese? This episode needs a redo

What do you mean by Indian curry? There's no particular flavour of Indian curry, it can be anything from sweet to spicy
