My grandmother, born in 1886 in coastal South Carolina, made a wonderful, dark gumbo. She always used okra as a thickener and added more before serving, the sassafras being used as a sprinkled seasoning. Her gumbos/stews usually had heaps of seafood, but you might also find, chicken, squirrel, or rabbit. By the way, a friend from the Caribbean (Barbados?) always brought or sent her sassafras--all parts of the plant--with which she made her own file and my grandfather made a rather strong rootbeer. She would not use the sassafras available on the mainland, but I never learned why. Any ideas?
Re Shoot the whole episode with real Louisiana natives….the best creole cooks come from Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles……. P.S no accent = no flavor😂
They’re definitely from Louisiana. I’m creole as well and definitely can tell my people lol but when you move to another state and live there for so many years your accent definitely goes away which sucks
I'm from Louisiana born and raised, still here and they need to throw the whole episode away. There is different levels to our cooking here all over this great state.

I am from New Orleans and I ran to watch this video. I knew that everybody was going to hate on each others' gumbo because the best gumbo is always ya momma's.
Whew Chile there was just a lot of Nooooo’s in the supposive “unbiased” gumbo tasting lol how is roux “sauce” automatic two strikes then how can rice overpower a dish?! Three strikes and they’re out lol
They should not have brought Sherry back to judge this. Cause you could tell she don't like okra and Brianna with "the rice is overpowering" girl if you don't GiT! Y'all robbed Erma and I am UPSET lol.
I've been patiently waiting on a Gumbo Try video. WHO MAKES GUMBO WITHOUT OKRA? It's not Gumbo if it doesn't have Okra. It's just soup. And it has to have a kick. This is why I don't really like a lot of Creole recipes. We make Gullah style gumbo in my house. Mine would beat all of these easily, but Erma's was the best looking out of the 3.
Gullah style? Thats not real gumbo. Also it has to have clay in it since one definition of gumbo is “a fine clay soil that becomes sticky when wet”. If you have to add okra because of the definition of the word gumbo you must add clay as well
Brianna gives off those "I'm better than you" vibes. Look at how she looks at the others food with a snotty look of disgust on her face. meanwhile, her gumbo looks like what comes out the back end during a bad bout of stomach flu.
I hate when they judge a food based on how it looks. Some food is “ugly delicious” as David Chang says. Some of the best food is not pretty, and gumbo is one of them.
I agree, but some of them take it too far acting like it’s gonna poison them or something. I would get it if it was like neon green or something, but they all looked fine
Exactly. Now I know your review is gonna be biased because even if the food ends up being good they wanna keep pretending like it’s bad to save face cause they already made such a big deal out of it looking gross
Okra gumbos are normally done more in Cajun country aka Lafayette and surrounding areas. At least that’s the kind of gumbo I grew up having living there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a N.O gumbo with okra.
I know these types of personalities are more “fun” to watch, comment, and engage with, and I’m feeding the algorithm gods, but can we get some more humble and nicer people? Some of them liked the food in the past but gave it a 3 or a 5. The Italian moms at BuzzfeedUK are a good example. You can review/critique a food but not be nasty
Yes the Italian moms and the British mums were my favorites. They were proud of their dishes but gave credit and enjoyed the other dishes too.. The Italian moms gave some of the highest scores!
Definitely. The British moms were nice too. Gave credit where credit was due, wasn’t too harsh in their criticism. I like the people here but some of them wouldn’t even try a decent bite or they have gave like a 1

definitely collard greens
Go Erma! Showing off your gumbo skills, representing all of Eunice and Southwest Louisiana. Your citified country twang had me cracking up! You were whispering like there wasn't a camera in ya face............but, it's ok, that was the Eunice in you coming out🤣🤣🤣
Facts! The 337 got some of the best cooks. And some towns in my 225 🔥
Eunice is near Opelousas though not east of New Orleans
Sherry was the only one not being catty. She just needs to season her food but her disposition wins. The other two, especially Brianna, were doing the most. And how y’all gonna have Sherry (the chef that likes burnt food) be the tie breaker? Nah. A “do over”please!
Right...I was happy with the first set of scores, then Sherry appeared...😩 I don't trust her judgement, lol.
I’m from New Orleans born and raised! None of it was gumbo! Only thing that should be in question is if any of them are really from Louisiana! Because all of it was trash! 🤷🏽♀️ I’m just the messenger! None of them even had a accent but me the judge! 🤷🏽♀️
@@chefsherryg.7239 Girl you ain't no chef change your name lmao
@@hyeboi and is!! Been on several different tv shows as well with this name! Stay a fan 🖕🏾🙃🙃
Racquel was the only one not being catty*
Brianna a bird nobody asked for her secret California recipe, Sherry didn't even try Erma's gumbo she literally had a small piece of chicken no okra and cheated Erma out that win. They got the score right without Sherry, Erma won imo. ✊🏿
Stay out of Louisiana ppl business! I was suppose to be able to taste a shrimp and be in love! Our good aunt Erma just didn’t have it! Don’t shoot the messenger! 🤷🏽♀️
@@chefsherryg.7239 shot
@@nonameinserted7619 😂 😂
Thank you I’m not from down south at all but I got a heart like one and let me say Erma won that one her gumbo looked so delicious and I hate okra but I’m pretty sure I would have loved her gumbo
@@chefsherryg.7239 Gumbo isnt just about shrimp tho so you basically admitted that you judged unfairly. you were judging their interpretation of Gumbo, not what YOU expect.
Any ideas?
Strains taste differently with salty air as opposed to humid
“She wasn’t with her mama “ comment got me crying lol
Re Shoot the whole episode with real Louisiana natives….the best creole cooks come from Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles……. P.S no accent = no flavor😂
No accent no flavor 😂 facts!
No accent no flavor 😂 a truth ya talk
Ok! I said this soon as I heard them talk
Thank you 💓
I'm from Lake Charles...I don't have an accent and my food is 🔥!!! Don't be fooled by that accent.🤣
The videos from a year ago make me appreciate the blindfold testing in the new videos 😬.
Justice for Erma , that won was stolen and y’all know it, that tie breaker was not needed at all
I feel like this episode needs a redo honestly
Wut we'yall wanna kno
is wutz Erma got cookn ina kitchun
😃😋
Brianna should’ve heard the commentary before letting that win go to her head 😂😂
i’m not even from Louisiana but i can tell they aint either
the unbiased judge was probably the only one that is really from there
as a native Louisianan I can confirm the unbiased judge is from New Orleans as I know her
They’re definitely from Louisiana. I’m creole as well and definitely can tell my people lol but when you move to another state and live there for so many years your accent definitely goes away which sucks
I know Erma and she is definitely from Louisiana....
I'm from Louisiana born and raised, still here and they need to throw the whole episode away. There is different levels to our cooking here all over this great state.
Brianna and Raqu- made soup. Erma made GUMBO, she should have won honestly.
Everyone has their own gumbo recipe. As long as you start with roux, onions, bell peppers, celery then you’re off to a good start
Dang right!! Had to change mine over the years but it always has the basic stuff lol. Also if you like spice, add Slap Your Mama seasoning. It’s good stuff lol
unless you add corn potatoes or carrots lol
Erma won hands down……I love her sense of humor…Did y’all catch on when she said Raquel must didn’t hang with her mama because her gumbo wasn’t made right😭😭😭😭😭. Brianna was a straight up hater attitude straight up horrible…
Why they even brought that Sherry girl there in the first place, the other girl one
I just be Erma had this in the bag. Then the tie breaker went inception on us,
#bringErmaback
The only reason that girl won is because that guest chef doesn't like the taste of okra....Erma definitely IS the true WINNER here....
Erma won the comments and the way her dish looked. Wish I could taste it while she whispers and tries not to talk bad about people, LOVED HER
“It just taste like shrimp soup” that got the whole squad laughing for me
Ol girl had the audacity to shit on both bowls of gumbo and they brought hers out looking like it came from an oil change 😂
The Louisiana in me when she called roux a sauce, hurt my soul..
I am from New Orleans and I ran to watch this video. I knew that everybody was going to hate on each others' gumbo because the best gumbo is always ya momma's.
Or Big Mama’s
Yall should’ve did the grandmas with gumbo
Let me know when yall reshoot this video. And Erma should judge the Tie Breaker!!
The definition of gumbo is literally okra! Why would you not put any in there? Lol
I’m so triggered.
LITERALLLY
Because we don’t🤷🏾♀️
There’s two different types of gumbo in louisiana. Okra gumbo and roux gumbo. The okra and roux are the base for each type.
Lots of Creoles and Cajuns alike don’t. There different variations of gumbo and there always have been since the start of making gumbo.
Nah this ain’t real gumbo Imma need the grandma with the bunions cooking my gumbo
2:42 - That roux was thin and raw?
4:55 - The rice is overpowering? Girl!
If you have to add okra because of the definition of the word gumbo you must add clay as well
@@blybroncs15 The Gullah-Geechee (SC/GA) arrived in America FIRST! Also with gumbo... TF is you talking about it's not real ?
Erma won! Adding that person in the end was stupid imo
@@TS-xn1mc thank you, like why bother participating in the competition if you gonna act like a dickhead lol 🙄
Exactly. Now I know your review is gonna be biased because even if the food ends up being good they wanna keep pretending like it’s bad to save face cause they already made such a big deal out of it looking gross
Gumbo is not ugly and nobody wants to eat food that looks disgusting 🤢 I for sure don’t and will judge accordingly
while gumbo is not a pretty looking dish, brianna's "gumbo" looked like swamp water
Who doesn't put okra in gumbo?! That's like chicken noodle soup with no chicken
I don’t🤷🏾♀️
i dont and im from
New orleans baby nawl
The people that don’t put okra in their gumbo just don’t know how to make okra without it being slimy. Gotta pan fry it first
Okra gumbos are normally done more in Cajun country aka Lafayette and surrounding areas. At least that’s the kind of gumbo I grew up having living there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a N.O gumbo with okra.
@@debmiller450 gumbo literally means okra.
No one was even talking about where the person made it come from- except her
“I’m super fake and my attitude will stank”
Brianna, probably
Sauce?!? Pretty sure it’s “ROUX” im not even from Louisiana and I know that! 🤦🏻♂️
Roux is just the fat & flour that you cook in the beginning. Adding stock & tomatoes etc. (whatever else you want to add) makes it a sauce.
I was thinking the same thing. Cali breed all the way but I know it’s not no damn “sauce” it’s “ROUX” lol right there with you
Brianna gives those “I finished psych 101 lemme diagnose u” vibes
This is too upsetting 😅
Brianna did NOT deserve to win. Neither for her pretentious attitude nor for her food👎🏾
Briana from California referred to roux as sauce. I started punching the air!!
Real talk had me mad as hell
Sho'enuf dat
1st come da roux.
next come everything else.
Rice being overpowering is WILD. Now you’re just finding stuff to say 😂
I like the people here but some of them wouldn’t even try a decent bite or they have gave like a 1
YES!!!! i hate the nasty attitudes and no real critiques!!
Some of these videos just get my blood pressure rising 😂
I’m a creole girl living in Cali!!! Lmk when y’all do this challenge again so I can sign my gumbo up 😭🤌🏽
Bre gumbo looks watery and Ms.Erma's gumbo looks good that lady who was tasting everybody's gumbo didn't even eat a spoon full to get the taste
