    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tom (Matt Damon) confronts and scares Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow) when she discovers he has Dickie's (Jude Law) rings.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
After the Oscar-winning The English Patient, writer/director Anthony Minghella attempted another tricky literary adaptation with The Talented Mr. Ripley, which features heartthrob Matt Damon cast against type as a psychopathic bisexual murderer. Tom Ripley (Damon) is a bright and charismatic sociopath who makes his way in mid-'50s New York City as a men's room attendant and sometimes pianist, though his real skill is in impersonating other people, forging handwriting, and running second-rate scams. After being mistaken for a Princeton student, Tom meets the shipping tycoon father of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), who has traveled to the coast of Italy, where he's living a carefree life with his father's money and his beautiful girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Dickie's father will pay Ripley 1,000 dollars plus his expenses if he can persuade Dickie to return to America. As Ripley and Dickie become friends, Tom finds himself both attracted to Dickie and envious of his life of pleasure. In time, he decides that he would rather be Dickie Greenleaf than Tom Ripley, so rather than go back to his life of poverty, Ripley impulsively murders Dickie and assumes his identity. The Talented Mr. Ripley was based on the first of a series of novels featuring Tom Ripley written by Patricia Highsmith; the story was previously filmed in 1960 as Purple Noon, with Alain Delon as Ripley.

Idk why so many people dislike gwyneth paltrow as an actress. I recognize she hasn't picked very versatile roles, but in the ones she's done, I don't think I can name one performance that was actually BAD. And she really knocked it out of the park with this one. There is not one disingenuous moment in this performance. Idk, I guess I just think there's a big stretch between an actor that lacks versatility vs an actorthat is bad, you know?

My favorite scene in themovie - not only because of the terrific acting - but because the music is so counter-intuitive. For a 'suspenseful' moment where one person slowly creeps onto another, the music is awfully 'busy'. And yet it works! This is a film music technique called Running Counter to the Action. Awesome example of how it plays with our own expectations and preconceptions of what 'suspense' music ought to be. Love it!

1:51 when he says "you're shivering Marge, can I hold you?" you can feel the slight amusement/excitement in his calm voice, like a cat playing with his prey. And she can sense it, that's why she's terrified like she knows she's about to get killed.

@@Greenballoffire yeah you can't help but feel Marge's frustration and despair. Imagine being the only one to see the truth and no one believes you and treats you with condescendance like " women☕" implying you're a poor little thing imagining things and you have to see your fiancé's killer not only get away with it but also get praise and affection from Dickie's father as well as half of Dickie's money as a thank you for being "such a good friend to Dickie".

This is a great scene.. but a little bit non logical.
Marge finds the rings and confronts Tom when he was in the shower. Then Tom asks Marge to give him a minute to get dry and cover himself. Marge had enough time to get out of the apartment while Tom is still in the bathroom, but instead she waited for him to get out and started backing off while being all scared... Doesn't make sense. But still good acting.

Somehow this story escaped Alfred Hitchcock's clutches. It was well within the kind of filmmaking screenplay adaptations he was doing at the time of the novel's publishing. It is probaby best that he left it alone. That said, Anthony Minghella had that special touch which would make Hitchcock proud. Now Minghella is gone. As is P.S. Hoffman - whose fine supporting performance in this movie cannot be understated.

The commentary for this film was my first introduction to costume design. Marge starts the film in gentle pastel cottons that reflect her openness to Tom, but by this point she’s completely mistrustful of him and that’s reflected in the thick coat she’s wearing.

What is the blood spreading in his pocket, and why doesn't any of them comment on it? And what about some rings?
Ifind it unbelievable that nostaff of the hotel recognised that Ripley was not Dickiey. That could have passed for a day or two, but then staff who knew Dickie were bound to be ón duty.Maybe just a fictional mistake.
