British Army MRE Review (ORP) Operational Ration Pack 24-HOUR Military Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test

  • This British Operational Ration Pack was one of my very first ration reviews. Like the US MRE the ORP has a very impressive shelf life. Unlike the meal ready to eat this United Kingdom field ration provides all the food a soldier needs for a full 24 hours. Unfortunately the example I taste tested was missing a couple items because it was open before I got my hands on it.

    One of the reasons we Brits use beans is because during WW2 they were ration exempt. The breakfast you should have had the oatmeal block as well tbh.

    You boil the brown oatmeal biscuits in a little water and a packet of sugar and have it as a kind of porridge with a cup of tea.

    Nice review! These are the ration packs (though more recent ones) my wife and I take when we go to festivals. Simple to heat, MASSES to eat and plenty of fuel for a long day of walking, standing and jumping about. No boiled sweets in the modern ones, sadly, though they do throw in cakes instead which are like 90% pure sugar.

    Very cool RR. Hot Diggity Dog, is the only hot sauce, I will set aside Tabasco for. Old school, ORP's in the box, seem to beat the newer rations hands down. The components are solid, and, I am glad you enjoyed, my friend. Peace, John. Great ration and review.

    British rations in the 1950's, through the 1960's, 1970's ( up until the boil in back stuff), always tasted great, good wholesome food and easy to cook or eat cold.

    Hi. The best things that were ever issued was in the British rat packs. Compo sausage compo bacon grill steak and kidney pudding also known as babies heads. I believe these were all in the 10 man compo packs.

    I remember getting issue WW2 British ration packs, instead of our standard Compo.
    I’m not sure about modern British rat-packs, but all the food could be eaten cold (yuk).
    On our tanks we carried a “Boiling vessel” (like a fancy kettle). We would take Compo from the infantry and warm up their food, when they operated dismounted.

    In the older style compo pack I liked the "Bacon burgers". It was a tin of solid pork/bacon meat, and you cut it into slices as you slid / levered out of the tin. Frying that was great, bit the mess tin was hell to clean.
    Loved the biscuits, Garibaldi and "A-B Brown". A-B as known as Arse-Blocker

    I love those oatmeal blocks. Got stuck in a wood on an exercise, nothing left but an oatmeal block on a baking hot day - I ate it out of desperation, but it was DELICIOUS.
    I've hunted them down all my life ever since. They're nice on their own or with a cup of tea, but also with cheese (or peanut butter & jam) and you can break them up with a little water or milk or some ration condensed milk to make a kind of porridge.
    You can tell the good rations when you open a box in front of a bunch of guys and certain cherished items disappear. Initially people go for the chocolate, but the wiser ones grab the Irish stew and oatmeal blocks.
    If you're on patrol, remember to pocket some of the little things, like condensed milk, sweets & nuts to snack on throughout the day, because you might be stuck in a bush for a while. That's when your oatmeal blocks are a cause to give thanks heavenwards.

      Quite right about having those things with you on patrol...
      The boiled sweets can help keep your mouth moisture going.
      I would place a bolied sweet along the back of my lower jaw and let it remain there....
      The oatmeal bar...Perfect with a cup of tea...A bit of peanut butter or jam ( Strawberry for me please) for a "boil up" out on exercise...Perfect.

    I'll never forgive them for taking away the Thai Style Chicken Soup.... I know you didn't get it in this menu but I miss it.... I'll wait for you my beloved soup....
    Oddly I prefer the veggie all day breakfast over the regular one, I think its the spices and flavours that you get with the veggie sausage. Made the mistake of eating the tomato pasta salad cold once, wont be doing that again!

    Incomplete by a considerable margin, there's no biscuits brown or biscuits fruit (equivalent to the crackers in an MRE, it's what the jam and peanut butter are for, the oatmeal block/oatmeal biscuit is a seperate item mainly intended to be dunked in tea or coffee then eaten on it's own). There also should have been at least one quite large chocolate bar in there, probably some boiled sweets too, and probably also a second kind of tea-bag or packet of hot chocolate powder (British rations are famous for their comparatively huge assortment of drinks, which are intended to be saved for later or traded around if not liked or not immediately used). The guy you got this ration from has taken some of the most desirable components out then re-sealed and re-sold the rest

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi 1IbramGaunt,
      The ration Readiness looked at is a 11/2016, Menu 6. Comparing it to an online archive of ORP menus, Readiness received all contents he was supposed to and the ration has its original factory seal :)
      The ORP stopped putting Biscuits Brown, Biscuits Fruit, Oatmeal Block and Chocolate in every menu after the 2009 production run. After the GP ORP was replaced in 2010 with the MCR, chocolate wasn't featured in the standard ORPs at all, and each menu had varied snacks and drinks.
      The "modern" ORP came into service in 2011 being based off the MCR, having a different assortment of snacks in each ration, this was to avoid monotony that came with every ration being the same par the main meals
      Hope this helps :D

    • @1IbramGaunt
      @1IbramGaunt ปีที่แล้ว

      @ evidently I'm behind the times a bit then haha; wonder why they still give you jam and peanut butter then if the main things they were intended to go on are no longer included, but oh well. Bet the soldiers living off these were kinda p*ssed off that only most of the components they probably liked the least seem to have stayed largely unchanged. On the plus side arguably the worst thing of all, the much-maligned sticky too-hard-to-eat sesame-seed bar seems to have finally bitten the dust (the only thing those were good for was target practice haha)

    • @1IbramGaunt
      @1IbramGaunt ปีที่แล้ว

      @also in the new version of the ration, given the immense bag it comes in you'd think they'd have the room for a couple of the new flameless ration heaters that ARE now included in the smaller single meal rations, but I guess taking away a soldier's chocolate was more urgent

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1IbramGaunt The 24 hour ration enhanced has a flameless ration heater, although only 15 000 are produced annually.
      The reason the 24hr ORP doesn't contain an FRH is due to cost, an FRH can end up being the most expensive part of a ration. So there is no need to spend all the money on FRHs if the soldiers already have their hexamine cookers, which are cheaper to produce and also result in less waste.
      An FRH is included in the SMR, Single Meal Ration for weight saving, ensuring the soldier doesn't have to take their entire mess kit and stove for a small patrol or exercise
      Chocolate was taken out of the 24hr ORP for temperature stability, the ORP is designed for use in all climates, apart from say the Arctic, so chocolate was removed because of its tenancy to melt, see Afghanistan, in order to make the ORP stable at all temperatures.
      The CCR, or cold climate ration, does contain a 100 gram chocolate bar, this is because it provides a high amount of calories and is unlikely to melt in a cold environment, as well as providing a morale boost in a harsh environment.
      hope this helps :)

    • @1IbramGaunt
      @1IbramGaunt ปีที่แล้ว

      @ yeah yeah they come up with all kinds of justification for this stuff but it has nothing to do with components melting or how many calories they have, it's all the MOD trying to save money

    The sheer volume of single use plastic. Of course I get why - they have to be built to last and go through hell.
    But I wonder if there is an any design technology that can be used to hit both the goal of enough longevity without plastic everywhere - biodegradable after 10 years not 100s of years....

    I’m still surprised that they don’t pack pouch of mushrooms, stewed tomatoes or jalapeños. The UK has a very little expectations of flavor. I’m just saying this from my friends across the pond to ppl with no experience. Little by little they are slowly opening their mind , but due to a socialist government… we’ll they don’t know what they’ve never embraced. Great reboot my friend 👍
