VINTAGE British Military MRE Review 🇬🇧 24 HOUR TASTE TEST Combat Ration Pack GP General Purpose ORP

  • This is probably the most important MRE taste test I've ever done. Not only is this the oldest British Military 24 Hour ration ever reviewed but it's also the most expensive food pack I've eaten. This General Purpose (GP) Ration was packed back in 1996, making it 26 years old as of filming. The 24-Hour Ration General Purpose is the predecessor to the British Operational Ration Pack or ORP. Like a US Meal Ready to Eat the Ration GP uses retort pouch technology to insure long shelf life. This particular meal was a mix of good and very bad. The review turned out to be one of the most interesting ration experiences I've encountered since beginning my channel. Hope you guys enjoy it and I apologize ahead of time for such a long video. It had to be that way to keep the review comprehensive.
    Thank you for Watching!
I want to say an extra special thank you to Amelié for giving me the opportunity to purchase this ration and to Jim for getting it to me safely along with the extras (That Tommy Cooker is a BEAST!).

Now thats how a review should be done, the description of each bite was great. My favourite is the biscuits fruit-s, we buy them buy the thousands when they come in stock, love them. I'll be checking out some of your other vids for sure. Thanks & Happy Christmas.

My brother in law was in the Scottish military until he was killed on R&R in 2009. After being on exercise or whatever he would bring what he had left of his MREs and we would get to try them. The chocolate was always the first item to be grabbed lol and it tasted pretty good. I remember these “biscuits or crackers” we would also try that had such an odd taste, and pates in a tin. Oh and tinned cheese ! If you find the tinned cheese and crackers your onto a winner lol. Brings back a lot of nostalgia seeing this video !

Sorry for your loss... think you mean a Scottish regiment of the British Army or military. Scotland being part of the UK has no independant military.

That pate or "cat food" as we called it looked like that back then too. Most armoured troops had extra kit like sauces, salt and pepper etc to add to our meals.

Thank you for sharing another great review. The British 24 hours rations are awesome. The age worries me you are risking food poisoning. The beans always bring to mind the cookout scene from Blazing Saddles! Blessings 🙏🏼👍🏼

The chocolate was often white back then too. We used to call the fruit juice "screech" because of how strong it was.

I'm showing my age but our rations were all in tins. Bacon Grill and Chicken Curry were my favourites. Chicken curry (Menu A if I remember correctly) was a tradable commodity in the field.

The tinned paste was always a fave, other ration packs came with a cheese options, as you done, you ate them with the biscuits brown

The MOD being cheap skates we were still being given these in the 2000s I did like the chocolate though, even though it was always white. At least you had the pate and not the aweful tinned cheese.

Huh. That "Tommy cooker" is very similar to the ones you can buy at sporting goods/outdoor/camping stores. Same design. They come in several different sizes, from pocket small that fit in the palm of your hand for heating a canteen cup to large ones like the one you got which are for larger skillets. Those fuel tablets that came with it are MASSIVE! Those must be for boiling a whole 8-9 quart pot of water or something.

Amazing what survives in these rations, and what you will try of these. But you use good judgement, as we all should. Nice review, as always.

Very cool RR ! Sadly, some items did not hold up well, to be expected however. Breakfast, Shame missing the oatmeal. The cookie crumbs would work well with it. Your idea was cool as well. I missed that idea. Cool Breakfast. Lunch , Shows some age as well. Still, most seems to have survived. Dinner. That stove looks awesome! Surprised the main was that bland, possibly age? Michael Green, from Leister England, sent me some versions, Of the mint cakes. They were fresh and tasty. Agreed on appearance on fruit dumplings? I hope no illness, befell you from this meal. Peace, John. Great ration and review.

Nice review! I'm gonna guess that white tea is black tea with creamer, that would explain the darker color and little white floatie specks. I could also be completely wrong.
You are a whole lot braver than I am. I wouldn't have touched half of that stuff. On the other hand, you make me feel a lot better about some of the neglected (older) rations I have lying around. I might still get a good meal out of them....
    Thanks for the awesome content!

the plate with the D shaped cut out sits on top of the fully opened wings of the cooker and is designed/sized to fit the base of the BCB Crusader canteen cup, this cup was originally an aftermarket private purchase cup designed to fit under the pattern 58 later pattern 90 plastic canteen to give a compact heating/boiling vessel it later I believe became an issue item

Watching you eat some of this old and questionable food reminds me of a quote from James Bond - Casino Royale.

If I recall I think that there should of been 2 of those Duncan chocolate bars, but it was a long time ago since I ate them.
Thought the Yorkie bars were post 2000 as well?
To be honest I used to bin everything off apart from the breakfast pouches. Burger and beans were OK, but the bacon and beans and the beans and sausage were the best. They used to give me terrible indigestion in the field. Super Noodles and Mars Bars were my staple 😂

    • @robdevenney
      @robdevenney หลายเดือนก่อน

I only ever remember gettting on Duncan's bar... I would happily pay a tenner or more to have one now especially the Rum and Raisin one but they stopped making them back in 2003. Never remember getting Yorkies with a 24hr rat pack. Agreed the Beans and Sausage was the absoutle ticket.

You really should not compare a retort meal from 1996 with fresh food, and then make the same old corny 'murican stereotypical and outdated 'jokes' about tasteless British food. It's insulting to say the least, and ignorant at best. Other than that, nice review.

back in my day of the OG GS rat pack to the first retorts been released. Those Biscuits Fruit look nothing like what I had. Biscuits Brown were a lot darker than you showed.. My biscuit's Fruit were the Garibaldi kind. en.wikipedia.org//wiki/Garibaldi_biscuit
I see you have the infamous "Not for Civvies" Yorkie bar. The slogan was a play on an ad campaign for the 90s. The slogan was "Not for Girls" As a Lorry driver/trucker ate the bar.
The waxed box for the Hexi tabs was to keep the smell in and moisture out. The wax box was excellent for lighting the blocks is bad weather. I was half expecting you to mix up the Hexi and the Mint cake. As they look similar. Kendal Mint Cake is almost pure sugar. Lots of calories in a small package. Its sold in climbing and camps shops. Kendal is a town in the lake District of England.
Kendel Mint Cake does have a version covered in Chocolate. The plain White is the OG and most popular one. Captain Scott took some to the Arctic. its been up Everest With Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hilary as well.
