I hope this is the only thing wrong with my Mazda. She just started randomly down shifting from 5th to 4th gear on the hwy. She doesn't do it anywhere else. I can't get past 60mph and she does whine and shudder a little when she finally changes gears. About thirty minutes later the problem fixes itself. Sounds gunked up too. So I hope the combo of fluid, filter, and tcm will fix this. I'm obviously going to wait on TCM to see if that's all that it needs first but I'm so glad I found these Mazda videos. Thank you!
@@sargecollects thank you. I love my Mazda as well. It's just a recent issue and I'm hoping I can get away with not taking it to the shop. I have mechanic friends thankfully but the one I usually go to said that he couldn't flush it because he needed a special machine for it. My other friend says you don't need it and I'm like I'm so confused. I have a new job and it's going from the foothills to the mountains 4 days a week and that's when I started noticing the problem. I was going up there for my drug and background screenings. It fixed itself thankfully but I don't want it to keep happening.
Just did it awhile ago and now it goes into 5th gear smoothly. Before when it goes into 5th gear the AT lights pop and vehicle jerks and hardly goes into 5th gear. Now it’s running smoothly on 5th. Hopefully it will get me going for another year 🙏
Start by changing the fluid and filter if it's been >75k miles since the last change. Other than old fluid, most Mazda transmission problems are caused by a bad TCM. Because the TCM is bolted to the top of the transmission, the heat damages it over time. Usually goes bad between 100-200k miles. I replaced the TCM on my Mazda 5 at 175k miles. Relocated the TCM and attached it to the brake lines to prevent heat damage. Currently have 215k miles and still running strong.
Before you changed the TCM, did it start shifting hard only after getting the running temperature up? Is it possible just moving the old TCM to the firewall might have solved the problem?
That’s a great observation. If I had time, I probably would’ve done that looking back but needed a working car for my kid. So I turned mine in for a “new” one and installed. Thanks
Did you let the computer relearn after reconnecting the battery back? There is a relearn process basically have the car do idle with minimum power draw (no ac no radio no heating) for 20min and then maximum power draw for another 20min idle.
No. I just drove the car around for about 10 mins. No AC or radio running because I wanted to hear the engine/transmission running....and still no issue. I was unaware about the computer needing to relearn anything. Thank you.
I have the same issue with my 2006 Mazda 3. Just replaced the TCM yesterday and is shifting a little better but the light is still on and still doing everything it was before. The TCM was a refurbished one, not sure what to do next.
I’m just curious I have the same vehicle and the same exact problem. But I switched the tcm first and that’s it. I didn’t even think about switching the fluid cause it look the right colour and it was at the right level. But my AT light is still on. I drove perfect the next day with at light on but now it’s day 2 and now it’s not wanting to go to 4th or 5th gear. Do you think I should do a tranny fluid change?
Yeah, that’s why I went ahead and changed everything since I was working on the transmission. I even used Lucas oil transmission to prevent slippage. Give it a try and change out transmission fluid. If that still cause the gear to not shift....then it might be a bad TCM. Or it could be the worst situation when you just need a new transmission.
I'm waiting on my TCM to be returned by UpFix and I've been trying to anticipate issues like you're explaining. One forum shared that it's a good idea to use "CRC Electronic Cleaner for Sensitive Electronics" to clean out the connectors attached to the TCM. I'm going to give that a go before reinstalling the repaired TCM. If heat damaged it in the first place, there could some residual junk in the connector too.
@@sargecollects Thank you! So far, the refurbished TCM installation has been great! I did notice some dirt and grime on the TCM connectors as well as the two ECM connectors, so I made sure to spray those out really well before reinstallation.
Hi, just wondering what ATF you used on the initial troubleshoot? I used a cheap Castrol brand I believe. Do you think it's worth buying the TCM to try and fix it?
I had extra M5 ATF from the dealership. Yes, it’s worth it. I went searching through a lot of junkyards and unfortunately it’s way too hard to find one. So, purchased a refurbished one online. Car runs great again.

On the 2010-13 3s, it is possible to do the job without unplugging the the computer that hangs on the side of the battery box. (Mentioning it in case someone is worried about having to unplug the two connections.) 2011 3, 2.5L. Changed the transmission mount & left the ecm plugged in. Two less connectors to risk damaging. Now waiting for tcm to arrive from Upfix, $500 vs $800 from dealer. Seems 185,000 to 190,000ish miles is the lifespan for the tcm when mounted on top of the transmission?
