What's really fantastic about her as well is everyone out gay and closeted during this time finally had representation. They knew the men in this video were different. This is a time before the internet and Madonna with her gigantic platform was offering queer content when the masses were saying anyone gay deserves aids and to die. She is a saint and saved lives.

No it wasn’t. This wasn’t about gay people, but it’s definitely part of the history of LGBT life during this Period. If you want to know what being queer was like back in the day go watch pose.

The dancers from this video and the Blonde Ambition Tour did a documentary a few years ago their experience with Madonna. It wasn't all rainbows and star dust like it appeared in Truth or Dare. Make of it what you will but they claim she wasn't all that nice, she outed one of her dancers in Truth or Dare citing the release they had signed as a condition of being on the tour. She wouldn't edit out his gay kiss scene because she wanted the public to see it, despite his objections.

This song and video are inspired by Voguing and Ballroom culture and also the video was choreographed by members of the House of Xtravaganza, very important to mention because this style of dance and culture was created thanks to trans, black and latino people from the 80's in new york, inspiring the mainstream and shows like "Pose" "Legendary" and "Ru Paul's Drag Race" :D

@@simongill184 I was 17 when this came out. I remember those days. There was a lot of sadness, true. And we never forget them. But this comment comes very uncalled for. This song celebrates the underground queer community and a dance style they had created. The reviewer has been doing Madonna reaction to her discography from his point of view. I am thinking he doesn’t do research before reactions to be more authentic. And I like that. I am not sure how old he is but I am assuming in his 20s. 80s and 90s were a long time ago. Yeah, we are pretty advanced on age. It’s natural for him not to be familiar with the background stories to many Madonna songs and he is getting a lot of input from fans about history. He could do without your negativity.

    • @justinm2697

Who can believe that "Vogue" was originally intended to be the B-side for "Keep It Together" (the final single from Like a Prayer)?
But after the completed track was presented to Warner Bros. executives, all parties involved decided that "Vogue" should be released as a single.

  • @RoyCoof

The entire music video is a tribute to the movies on the silver screen back then. Thus, the rap part are the names of some of the stars on the silver screen. :D

    • @robertfraser9873
      @robertfraser9873 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

She wrote the rap part on a flight from LA to NY. She recorded the vocals for both Vogue and Rescue Me in Shep Pettibone's basement. Fun fact - the vocals to one of her biggest selling and most enduring tracks (Vogue) were recorded in a converted wardrobe that Shep had moved down to his basement after he bought a new one for his bedroom. So those that think only huge hits and big sellers can be made in expensive recording studios...think again! Haha
Actually when it came to writing and recording her next album Erotica. She deliberately booked scuzzy places to work in. One of the writers and producers on the Erotica album said that they were writing lyrics to a song called "Eating out", released as "Where life begins" there was a rat ran over there feet. She never freaked out she was like I slept rough on the streets, I have shared my space with worse things than rats. Her best work tends to be times where she is not writing or recording in an expensive room. She says that it puts pressure in her, like she feels like she needs to write 12 number one. The last album that she be wrote in a normal environment was Confessions on a dancefloor. She wrote and recorded it in writer, producer, musician and friend Stuart Prices loft apartment in Shirland Road, Maida vale in London.

The thing most people forget about or new viewers don't realise - is Madonna, in many of her videos references other artists. In Vogue she references the iconic work of Horst P. Horst (a golden age of Hollywood photographer) and others. But mainly Horst. And the song itself and the choreography and some of the dancers were taken directly from the Ball Culture of NYC. But the genius of Madonna is in the taking of these things, mixing them all together and creating something new. Anyone discovering Madonna's work now should take a deep dive into her references with each work cause the rabbit hole you go down really exposed some great art and artists that only make her much more of a champion for art in general. ✌️

If you're thinking about reacting to any concert tour of Madonna's or any other artist.. I'd recommend Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition Tour. Nothing like it had ever been done in pop music, and It changed the way pop artists approached their live shows. It's the definition of ICONIC. The tour is Madonna at her absolute best. Pope John Paul II urged the general public and the Christian community not to attend the tour, calling it "one of the most satanic shows in the history of humanity". Toronto police threatened to arrest Madonna if she performed certain parts of the show in their city. In 1991 Madonna's theatrical documentary release, "Truth or Dare" followed the tour and features mostly behind the scenes footage with some concert footage sprinkled in. Even if you don't react to it, I'd recommend you watch it sometime if you spare time.

Madonna & David Fincher are the new, at that time, Marlene Dietrich & Josef Von Sternberg, their work together is timeless! The light in some scenes are inspired by Sternberg's work with Dietrich. Here, she was possessed by all the classical Hollywood Divas she named on!! That style suits her so well!!

People forget Madonna studied with Martha Graham an iconic pioneer of modern dance prior to pursuing singing. so she had trainng about creating art and an experience and a journey through performance no doubt during her training. I saw her celebration tour on 1/22/24 and it did not disappoint. Incredible show.

But millions people also love trailblazer because they don't fear change. No one will ever come close to Madonna in terms of longavity and musical and cultural impact . She single handedly changed pop music in all it's form for ever and most importantly what it means to be a powerful woman who runs her own life and doesn't take sh.t and will stand up fpr her Art and what she believes in and truly doesn't care what society thinks .

Not just her wardrobe. Voguing (which has 5 elements including hand work, face and others that was about emulating the pages of fashion magazines) came from 1970s and 1980s Harlem from the LGBTQ underground ballroom scene and two of the dancers here are from the famous house of Xtravaganza, who choreographed this and it was a love letter to the community who she always fought for and who supported her in droves. Showcasing “fem” men back then was a no no, but she didn’t care and we lapped it up! That Bra was made for her and other versions of it by Jean Paul Gautier.
What was even more iconic was her live performance of it at the MTV awards where she fused ballroom from the renaissance and Vogue from Harlem underground ballroom. She refused to rehearse it in front of the producers because they would have censored it somewhat :)

Few if any people at this time were as vocal in their support of the community and those living with hiv than she was. Voguing was a type of dance that came out of NYC's Ball Scene where often black and Latinx LGBT came together to form community and support and live out their fantasy of being accepted by society and successful. The line it doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl was originally doesn't matter if you're gay or straight but Disney nixed it. And she often does black and white to hide acne

i may be misunderstanding your take, but 'vouge' is referenced to the dance Vouge not the magazine Vouge. the hands movement during dancing is vouging. She was however a fashion icon. Also you said it that "everyone hates a trailblazer until they dont. Back then she was hated by so many and now she is respected and considered queen of pop

As I understand it, the dance came from people 'posing' for photos for Vogue magazine. So the dance is referencing the magazine.

Hi Taylor, discovered your channel and wanted to make a request. Can you give reaction to Madonna’s MTV Awards performance of Vogue? It’s a very different take. Thank you! 💜

Taylor, Vogue was inspired by the ballroom culture of NY. The ballrooms were these balls where mostly black and latino 🏳️‍🌈 would gather to do the voguing, a kind of dance in which they emulated poses of the Vogue magazine. The balls had categories and were a space where 🏳️‍🌈 would find families (once they were estranged from their own). If you wanna know more about it check the show “Pose”. Also I interviewed three of Madonna’s dancers from Vogue in 2017. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/11-BVQYOAVw/w-d-xo.html
