"Erotica" is one of the albums that changed the industry. It marks a before and after in the history of music. Thanks to this Madonna album, the favorite female artists of many young people can talk about sex and express themselves freely without being so criticized. "Erotica" became a cult record over the years, and entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a revolutionary record. Madonna breaking taboos from time immemorial. Iconic! ☆
And she did with such confidence and class. She was not some bimbo twerking like mad. She was totally doing it on her own terms and in control. And no bad words on any of the sexual songs. The personal songs like Bad Girl and In This Life get overlooked too often unfortunately. The album was about so much more than just Sex.
Erotica was actually considered a flop and had a lot of backlash for the sexual content. This was a huge deal back then when sex was extremely taboo. Till this day madonna has never apologized or regret what she did with this album/era and I’m glad she never did. Also this album did indeed changed pop culture forever.
Lol sex was just as permeated throughout society as it is today. The 70s was probably the most sexual era in popular culture there was. It was the fact that she made such an aggressively sexual album in the midst of the AIDS scare. People found it to be dangerous and irresponsible. Of course Madonna’s aim was to get people to confront fear, and engage sexuality, if at minimum through fantasy.
@brettneyxcx6683 the backlash was well deserved.. she didn’t need to go fully nude .. that was p0rn .. I don’t see a difference just cuz Madonna is the one doing it then it should be ‘ accepted ‘ especially that erotica the album was musically great , sensual and she even was mysterious with the lyrics and the double entendres.. the book and the music video for erotica just don’t go with the general atmosphere of the album.. so Madonna did some self sabotage there .. just focusing on ‘ erotica ‘ as a single and failing to show the potential of the album as a whole
I stand by the statement that this is one of the most important albums of all time. Everything changed after it. They tried to destroy her because of it. She and the album and what the album stood for stood the test of time.
The album is in the hall of fame. The album was a flop for the industry 6 million copies (it really wasn't a flop), the singles are amazing. The cinematographic and conceptual videos, The book sold more than 1 million in 3 days and is a Guinness record. The tour was short, controversial, and successful. Madonna made a lot of money between 1992 and 1993. She is a revolutionary woman. she chance all in the music industry.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of this album. It was so ahead of its time! The last 3 songs are so important, specially for the gay communitiy. At the time, that's what sexuality was, pain and pleasure intertwined.
I kinda think the album was structured like a relationship, or maybe like a night of passion. Rain is the ‘climax’ and the last three are ‘afterglow’ or maybe even regrets and the consequences of love lost, the dangers of sex, and death.
This whole album is Madonna's masterpiece, but Rain is out of this world. And she said in an interview that Rain isn't a sexual innuendo song, but about heartbreak and longing for that one true love to come back.
I'm glad you also noticed how Madonna shifted to this poetry style of singing, i call this (and her foreshadowing to Erotica, Justify My Love) the “Spoken-Word era” of Madonna for a reason lmao
Erotica was slammed when it first came out. But now journalists are even saying how legendary this album is. It sold 7 million albums worldwide wide a lot less the like a virgin, true blue and like a prayer but this was her first experimental album but not her last. She is a true icon, legend of the music industry. Unfortunately Madonna does not get the credit from so many. Hopefully when day she will be credited for the brilliant body of work she has written and produced for her 40 years of music she has created!
i think she is finally getting that credit. i noticed younger people are discovering her music, and younger artist salute her. for sure she gets more respect now compared to the beginning of her career
received generally favorable reviews from critics, who regarded it as one of Madonna's most adventurous albums and praised her comments on taboos and AIDS
I understand what you are saying, but the songs after rain are so deep, important and meaningful, especially considering the AIDS pandemic we were in. 'Why's it so hard' about love in difficult times like that and marginalizing gays and other minority groups. 'In this life' was about her friend artist Keith Haring who died of AIDS. Secret garden I have learned to love, it's just a beautiful, almost dreamy song about paradise where everything is perfect. Well that's my free interpretation.
AIDS is very important to this album and its reception, people automatically think, "oh it was the early 90s, society was more conservative back then" which is true, but celebrating sex so freely and explicitly was even a bigger taboo after the AIDS crisis.
I have read interpretation about Secret garden that she is singing about her vagina... but also about male domination and her being a strong woman when she sings "And the boots have come and trampled on me", a common subject in M's career
Erotica may be the most representative album of wats going on in the 90s…. Both with it’s sounds and it’s lyrics … talking about sex, abuse, AIDS, …. This is a masterpiece. One of her most cohesive album!!! It is perfection!!!

Rain is a masterpiece. It was actually popular in Asia, and it's music video were considered as one of the greatest and most innovative during that time. It was sad because it was overlooked because of The Bodyguard songs like I Will Always Love You and I Have Nothing.
You need to listen to the last 3 tracks again. Secret garden is the greatest song ever recorded by Madonna. There is so much uniqueness to it I don’t even think Madonna herself understands what an incredible track it is. It’s art. The ending piano solo is just wow. It ends the album perfectly. An amazing finale to an amazing album
My favorite songs are Bad Girl, Where Life Begins, Rain, Waiting, Deeper And Deeper, Erotica. The whole album is great. I get what you are saying about it ending after Rain because i sometimes stop after that track as well. The final 3 tracks are good but i don't vibe with them quite the same way either. Subject matter is important though on the Girlie Show she really brought them to life. Rain is underrated. She was unfortunately experiencing a serious backlash after she put out Erotica as the first single with people saying she had gone to far so airplay was less for the singles of this album than what she was used to. One or two years earlier Rain would have easily gone to #1, in 1993 it had to settle for #14, which is still decent for a fourth single but you know she was used to bigger numbers. Erotica peaked at #3 and Deeper And Deeper at #7. Bad Girl is her best video, you have to check it out. The song unfortunately peaked only inside the top 40. Nowadays Erotica is praised by fans and critics though as a dark masterpiece and one of the most revolutionary album of all time.
This is true to an extent, but Deeper and Deeper was a number one airplay hit in the US and Rain was on almost every other hour where I live in the US, especially on AC stations. Other than that, Erotica and Bad Girl did not get much play.
Justify My Love (1990) was really the song that set the transition from 80s Madonna to Erotica era. I think it’s sexier than Erotica and has the moaning of Lenny Kravitz in the background. You should check it out. Rain made me fall in love with Madonna as a kid. The song is beautiful and the video is mesmerising, I thought she was so stunning. Why’s it so hard Live from Girlie Show Tour is so much better than the studio version, the performance has so much emotion
Erotica is such a masterpiece, pity it wasn’t well received when it was first released. But I’m glad people are catching up to it now because it was way ahead of its time.
this album WILL eventually get the respect it deserves in much the same way Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" finally got it's due respect long after the fact - Only true fans knew it at the time.
I totally touched your fingers. It's funny I like Secret Garden more than some of the songs before it. Deeper and Deeper is pure joy though. I would suggest going back and listening to the two songs on The Immaculate Collection which comes before Erotica. JML bridges Vogue to Erotica and is soooo good. rescue Me is also a classic in it's own right.
Justify My Love was literally the Tip of the Iceberg for what Madonna had in store, but on Rescue Me Madonna showed up, and ate down on that track!!!! An Iconic Dance-Pop gem if she had a video for Rescue Me in early ‘91 with her Marilyn Monroe image at the time it would’ve topped the charts for weeks
It really can't be understated how important Madonna was to the male gay community during the AIDS epidemic. From her earliest days on the club scene in New York - and throughout the worst days of the epidemic and beyond - it was clear that she was a committed, unwavering ally. And the reason it was clear wasn't only because she spoke out loudly and forcefully on our behalf, but also because she was simultaneously experiencing much of what many of us were going through - if not physically, then certainly emotionally. Her deep immersion in gay culture from the minute she hit New York meant that she understood and cared about us in a way that no other Very Famous Person - pop icon or otherwise - ever had before. With this magnificent album (her best imo), she documented for posterity her commitment to and understanding of our community. Throughout those dark days and beyond, she hasn't just been an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, but she's celebrated us through her music (and some damned good music at that!). Madonna and her music have been a consistent part of the gay cultural landscape for decades. It's why she means so much to so many of us. And why some of her (cough cough) older gay male fans like myself will never turn our backs on her. (But please M, don't turn out to be a serial killer...we do draw the line :).
Justify My Love should have been on this album, but it was released as a teaser prior to this album on a greatest hits. Her second and biggest controversial video of all time. It was Lenny Kravitz’s first Grammy win. He wrote, produced and did background vocals for JML.
Hi, Taylor, I am completely enjoying your Madonna deep dive and am wishing these are weekly uploads rather than monthly! I am curious about what your thoughts on Madonna were before you started to review her discography. How knowledgeable of her body of work were you? Did you only hear a sporadic song of hers here and there? Your opinion of her albums seems very good. Just curious if that was the case before you started the deep dive? Looking forward to you RAINing down more Madonna reactions! 😉
I love this album. I was in my 20's when it came out and have so many great memories associated with many of the tracks. My absolute favorite is Deeper and Deeper. I actually didn't care much for Rain if you can believe it but the video is stunning. You should definitely check it out!
I'm glad you enjoyed Erotica, OTDE! I think it should have ended with RAIN and SECRET GARDEN. But the reason Why It's So Hard and In This Life were included was because of the AIDS pandemic. And I feel like she had to address that. In fact, I think they add more depth to the album, a little bit more maturity. Really enjoyed this!!
“Why’s It So Hard” is brilliant, one of my favorites…perhaps with more listening you will discover the joy, frustration, celebration, anger, and sadness in this song 💗 💫
I predicted your reaction to Rain. I figured your head would explode. The tension in the song is amazing. Be careful when you watch the Rain video. It'll happen all over again when you watch the visual. You also look EXACTLY like one of the men in the video. When you reached out your hand, I said to myself "He's channeling the Friggin Video without even knowing it"!
Madonna really got experimental with this... still love when she does her throwbacks to her own previous work: "This is not a Love Song" with Bye Bye Baby, and "Let your body move to the music, let your body go with the flow" with Deeper and Deeper, not to mention the sonic throwbacks too
I really enjoyed your reaction video, your enthusiasm is contagious. I remember listening to the album for the very first time, I was mesmerized, especially about songs "deeper and deeper, bad girl and of course Rain".
This album is fantastic and I'm still shocked it didn't sell well. I love all the songs on this album and admire its musical and lyrical versatility. Bad Girl is my personal favorite track. It's sad that Madonna herself only performed it live once and didn't even include to her Something to Remember album. Thief of Hearts, Words, Waiting, Rain are another faves of mine
it did sell well, it was compared to her other album sales at time which were in the multi platinum sales. this only sold couple million in U.S. comparing the sales made it look like a flop. Any artist would die to sell a couple of million
It didn't sell well for "Madonna Standarts". I remember reading an article on an European Magazine like 6 months after the album was released saying the album was a failure as it have sold "only" 4 million by then worldwide. Right beside it on the other page was another article about how Kylie Minogue latest studio album being as huge success for selling 2 million worldwide after about 1 year since its release (at the time Kylie Minogue was already the 2nd most female successful artist of all time in UK and Australian charts). So if this had been released by any other female artists and sold that much would have been considered a success. Today the album already crossed 7 million sales (probably even more as Warner doesn't update sales for long) and it will certainly hit 10 million one day. 😊
@German Morawski yeah! At first some did thought that (especially in US). But as new singles were released the image of the album changed a bit (especially with "Rain") but Madonna wasn't interested on that just yet as the tour was also pushing bounderies (her Girlie Show Tour) - even at MTV Awards she decided to present a very sexual "Bye Bye Baby" instead of a toned down "Rain" or much fun mainstream song like "Deeper and Deeper".
This album is genius...amazing piece of work. Its blend of house,r&b, hip hop, jazz and pop, it's lyrics and experimental vocals. It's gritty and classy at the same time. Yea a vibe 🔥
I love you for loving the album that changed my life! this record is a message about a difficult time for alot of people, Madonna saw a personal struggle and an universal pain and she did a perfect picture to encapsulate what was going on, I feel most of my favorite albums between 1988 and 1993 does that, like George Michael's Listen without Prejudice or Pet Shop Boys' Behaviour. Oh!! and also I'm pretty excited to see your reaction to the rest of the 90's! I hope that you also react to "Something To Remember" that is a compilation but it felt like a completely new album at the time!
This album was supposed to be a look at relationships in a post-AIDS epidemic world, hence why there’s so many topics lyrically. I feel like this album was the first where she reinvented herself sonically. A lot of people hated it when it was released, as she had just released her Sex book, and she got a lot of backlash that hurt her career. Now it’s considered to be groundbreaking within popular culture, and is a fan favorite. From now on, expect each Madonna album to be a significant departure from the last.
Looking back now as a millennial and thinking about this album contextually it's clear alot of ppl didn't understand this album .....during this time period sex and death was so deeply entwined and this is a record which put out those complications in thrilling and nuanced ways.....it also encapsulates the gay experience of that time I could imagine in a way in which few if any mainstream artists could or cared to understand ......
Excellent critique. Your reaction to Rain priceless, especially on that transition part. You need to watch the video and react to it. That video was/is just ART!
You need to watch the music video of “Rain” by one of the best music video directors of all time, Mark Romanek. Erotica is the album that syncs with “infamous then” the “Sex” book, about releasing one’s own fantasy. The sound wise, this album is a sort of extension of Vogue and Justify My Love, another ground breaking song and music video at that time. About the 3D sound you mentioned, she was using Q-sound at that time with Justify My Love and her first best album Immaculate Collection. So she was experimenting the new technology and cutting edge artists like Andre Betts, who produced some of the tracks in this album. I love Erotica and believe Ray of Light definitely comes out of her Erotica experiments. Both are my favorite albums along with her 80s albums.
I love your reaction to Rain! As a life long Madonna fan, and some one who was 16 when this album came out, I felt my teenage self was connecting to your firsttime experience with Erotica! Thank you for this review.
Rain is also my favorite song from this album. Madonna is the Queen, her legacy is untouchable. Taylor, you ROCK! Please do a reaction of the Rain video, it´s so mesmerizing and beautifully done!
Yes I touched the screen because Taylor told me 😂 😂 😂. This is my favorite album reaction from your channel. Yes I watched while you were eating a sexy apple 😂
I'm so glad you loved this album. There's just nothing else like it. It was so far ahead of its time that a lot of people didn't get it. But I think a lot of those people came back later and realized just how amazing it really is.
This album is my favorite album of hers. I felt guilty when I listened to it because of the backlash Madonna suffered after releasing it. I re discovered it years later as a grown man, and I think it's one hell of an album.
You will find on repeat listens that different songs on this album will strike you and cause different reactions based on your mood and experience listening to the album at different times.
Taylor Taylor Taylor..... Madonna never gives u what u expect in every new album. So that being said! Bedtime Stories is nothing like Erotica, totally different sound. But she does have a great bitch slap response song (Human Nature) hitting back at the backlash after Erotica, Sex book era. Lol
Madonna basically is credited for popularizing house music in US with 'Vogue' in 1990.. She has many classics like Vogue that aren't included in studio albums
I often think that Erotica is my fav Madonna album but she has such an amazing career it’s quite impossible to choose. Lots of my fav songs I this one, what a daring album, she has always been taking chances. A true artist ❤️
Let's start an online petition to get taylor to release a behind the scenes video of him vibing to this album shirtless and doing push ups to thief of heart.
Actually I never been a big fan of Rain but watching your reaction I feel like I underappreciated it lol. It indeed is a gorgeous ballad. But for me Why's it so hard and In this Life hit so hard. Why's it so hard it's the original Born this way in its lyrical content, Madonna should have performed more times that song through her career. It's a BOP and the message keeps on being relevant in 2021. And in this life as you said feels so cinematic and it's one of Madonna's most personal songs, it is dedicated to two of Madonna's good friends who died of aids.

You're hot
In This Life was one of the most important songs on the album considering the AIDS pandemic that was going on at the time
This is true to an extent, but Deeper and Deeper was a number one airplay hit in the US and Rain was on almost every other hour where I live in the US, especially on AC stations. Other than that, Erotica and Bad Girl did not get much play.
@@OneDamnBoy haha thank you very much 😙
Justify My Love (1990) was really the song that set the transition from 80s Madonna to Erotica era.
Reminder set! Can't wait to watch. Definitely one of my all time favorite albums
You said the magic word - "vibe" you hit the nail on the head. LOVE rain. Crazy under-rated song of hers
Justify my love & rescue me are both available on patreon currently!
@@TaylorRobertsOfficial hopefully you can get them on TH-cam I’m broke
Deeper and Deeper is a magic journey. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One of my favourite discs by the Queen.
Deeper And Deeper deserved #1, so did Erotica
Finally someone said something about "Rain"!!! I've always felt that song is so underwhelmed.
You should watch Madonna in tour… her Girlie Show is the tour that support this album, and it is ICONIC.
Why’s it so hard and in this life are my two favourite songs of the album.
“Why’s It So Hard” is brilliant, one of my favorites…perhaps with more listening you will discover the joy, frustration, celebration, anger, and sadness in this song 💗 💫
Honestly your reactions to this album bring me joy.
This is my favorite album. I was born in 92 and this album helped me a lot on dealing with my sexuality and self confidence
LOVED THIS REACTION! You're reaction to Rain was everything! 👍👌👏
You didn’t notice but deeper and deeper is basically Vogue beats speed up , she even make a nod to the lyrics in the outro :)
I never noticed, neither
Good to see you back Taylor. I hope you feell well. When your hear ROL and COTDF Im sure you ll love it.
Madonna really got experimental with this... still love when she does her throwbacks to her own previous work: "This is not a Love Song" with Bye Bye Baby, and "Let your body move to the music, let your body go with the flow" with Deeper and Deeper, not to mention the sonic throwbacks too
"This is not a love song " could save been a running meaning of this album: sonically and lyrically
What affected Erotica's sales, apart from the release of the book Sex, was Madonna's complete change in her sound and image.
The album that made me a Madonna fan when I was 11 yo. It changed my life forever. Love your Madonna reaction and journey! Thanks!!
Same here! Same age too. I played this cassette in my walkman til it fell apart.
Your reaction to Rain was exactly the way I experienced it in 1993!!
I really enjoyed your reaction video, your enthusiasm is contagious. I remember listening to the album for the very first time, I was mesmerized, especially about songs "deeper and deeper, bad girl and of course Rain".
I would compare the atmosphere that Rain creates to the one Live to Tell did, those songs are their own universes
My favourites for that very same reason.
@@ianluca2342 they're very high in my list, but i'd add Frozen to complete the Atmosphere Trifecta
Yeah finally 😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🥳🥳🥳 can’t wait!!!!!
Madonna's 90's era produced three of her best albums. Can't wait for Ray of light and Bedtime Stories.
See the Rain Music Video is a Masterpiece
One of her best albums along with "Ray of light". I like "Music" and "Bedtime stories" as well.
The book overshadowed the album. Had she only released the album earlier....
Hottest reaction to any Madonna album. Love it. This is definitely a masterpiece and there's so much to explore and enjoy in this record.
One of the best reactions I've ever seen in my life! I've watched it three times (in two days). And EROTICA is a masterpiece!!
Just a masterpiece!!! Loved you’re reaction!!! ❤️❤️❤️🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
What a treat go get home fron work, get a glass of wine and watch this reaction!!!!!!!
Best way to watch!
Secret Garden is one of my favorites of hers, but I didn’t really appreciate until years after I first heard it.
Bad Girl and it's music video are truly timeless masterpieces and two of her absolute best in her unparalled catalogue
I love your reaction to Rain! As a life long Madonna fan, and some one who was 16 when this album came out, I felt my teenage self was connecting to your firsttime experience with Erotica! Thank you for this review.
why am I actually touching the screen during Rain?? ha ha loved it
She’s the best pop star !
Your reaction out did what I was expecting!! You totally got the concept of this iconic album. 👍👍 Who knew 'Rain',would be such a orgasmic song!😉
Can't wait to watch reaction video for Ray of light. Can't even imagine how shocked you'll be. Thank you
Rain is also my favorite song from this album.
Damn i love how you get and admire Madonna. See her performance of Rain from The Girlie Show Tour. its good
You will find on repeat listens that different songs on this album will strike you and cause different reactions based on your mood and experience listening to the album at different times.
Inspired, intimate, & intriguing 💣🔥🎧💿
Mistress Dita was on some next level sh!t
28:47 I love this part of Words : "friends they tried to warn me about you..." It's so beautiful. An incredible album. So glad you loved it.
I always loved that part too!!!
Lol
It's really joyful for the eyes to see a gorgeous dude like this listening to Erotica.
Personally, my favorite album of hers. I also love Bedtime stories and Ray of light...she was on a high creatively at this time
"Erotica" is by far the best song on this album. This is her best song ever imo.
Well...I think you are gonna get crazy with Ray Of Light
Can`t wait
Madonna basically is credited for popularizing house music in US with 'Vogue' in 1990.. She has many classics like Vogue that aren't included in studio albums
Vogue is on I’m Breathless which is basically a studio album
Not only MASTERPIECE , it's well ahead of its time. I am glad I went all the way to support her brilliant Erotica album .❤️❤️❤️❤️
