The 2021 McLaren GT Is A Practical Exotic (But That’s A Relative Thing…)

  • The structure is carbon fiber. The 612 horsepower twin-turbo V8 has only 3,384 pounds to move. It’s so rare you may never see one in person. A true canyon carver, the McLaren GT is the most practical car the company makes, versatile enough to haul a set of golf clubs. But no, it won’t replace your SUV or minivan. It remains a McLaren and that means it’s different from anything else out there. Tom Voelk checks out a 2021 model.

Thanks for all of the extra work you do (for example, matching the color among four or five different cameras from different manufacturers--not an easy task!) to make your production values way above average for TH-cam. Please be careful with your replacement chainsaw, though; I've been watching your videos for many years now, and we want to keep watching your car reviews for many years go come!

I was trying to put my finger on this particular style of car review, and I think I figured it out... Your reviews remind me quite a bit of the motor week car reviews. The Red, yellow, green segments remind me of the earlier motor week reviews. I hope this comes off as the compliment it is :) Keep up the good work, it does show in the quality of every review!! It is refreshing to watch an informative review that isn't complaining that the car in the review isn't some other car that the reviewer is biased towards :)

It's the prettiest supercar I've seen in a while. Love the big air intakes (that make the luggage area possible). It reminds me a bit of a C8 if one sanded away all the creases and replaced them with curves. I really love the styling... but... no question at all: I'd have the 911 Turbo S for this money. But I'd never criticize someone for buying this.

Even the Portofino have Adaptive Cruise Control and Apple Carplay (as options). Aston Martin and Mercedes have that too. In this day and age, that should be part of the package for your "practical car", even if your car is not practical at all. Exclusivity is of course have some value, but without these features the exclusivity will be even greater.

But you are well healed and this is a toy right? Very nice toy. Sure love these cars, Ferrari, McLaren, and so on. But reality is so much more easy to deal with and not torture myself on the never have front. Nice to see and maybe ride in. Still the amazing video quality here is what impresses me here. Tom your video quality is always excellent. I care more about that than the cars. LOL. I know you have a Sony, but I think you are also shooting with a Panasonic or JVC, I can't remember which. Absolutely gorgeous car, inside and out. But it's missing everything that makes a great GT car and missing everything that makes a great McLaren. Because of this, it's proving to be a poor seller, with most sold based solely on its looks. The C8 Corvette makes a better rear mid engine GT at a third the price, which means you won't worry about going to Whole Foods when you daily it. Sorry McLaren, but that SUV you said you'll never build, well Ferrari said the same thing (in fact their CEO said he'd rather be shot than build an SUV), yet here we are months away from the release of the Purosangue. I hate SUV's, but a lack luster vehicle in their lineup is something McLaren cannot afford.
