I belong to both sides....i am from Ghana and one does need even to travel before having these experience. Well said.... Cultural expectation and Survival
Lets put it like this. Sending money home helps people definitely and also perpetuates a culture of dependency & entitlement. If everyone 1 eperson you uplight another 3 feel entitled to be looked after.
Thank you so much for taking the courage to say something that we are unable to talk about. So much truth in this. I know of an amazing young man that managed to 'japa' and sent money home religiously. He was abroad for over 8 years but his papers were not in order. In the 8 years every single year he sent someone from home to come through to the UK. Unfortunately he was deported from the UK for being an illegal immigrant. When he was at home he called the people that he had helped to try and come through for him. His parents would Eves drop on his telephone conversations and asked him why he didn't have any savings. Some people went as far as saying 'you are now asking for pay back. You shouldn't have helped if you are making it seem like we are indebted to you.' But because God is a good God, a year later he moved to America. Managed to complete his medical studies and this year has been his first year as a medical doctor. People have no shame! A new set of people, including his parents are now asking for money! Again!
It’s a crazy selfish world that we live in. And it’s very important that we look out for ourself first before taking on the responsibility of other people. Thank you for watching!
Thats very hurtful indeed. These relatives and family members back home are truly arrogant selfish and ungreatful. That brother should remember his experience with them and cut off all channel of communication with them immediately.
I don't understand that their family members are in the states going to the food bank, barely able to make ends meet, and always asking for money the family is.. Now, if the family wants you to pay for education, or training, or a accreditation, or maybe a small loan to start a business, complete with a business plan?, then I understand sending a bit money home to get that plan going, but you are not in ATM.. you pay directly for that class, or pay directly for the training yourself,.. But this whole idea that we are all swimming in milk and honey in the states, shows just how ignorant the world is for what American citizens go through
My roommate back in University cut all the ties with his family in Mozambique. He was living on financial aid, so he wasn't living the big life in Germany. They didn't care, even guilt tripped him for being "selfish". Breaking moment for him was when his own mother asking him for money and when he said he can't she replied with "can't you just stop paying rent?"
You see that “even if they gather their money and send to you…it will probably not pay your rent for one month” part, it cannot be overstated. Even though I need to take this advice myself, it’s very important to build a strong financial safety net…as nobody that you are helping from back home can truly come to your aid if shit hits the roof financially here. Thank you.
That's why I understand if you may be directly pay for training or education for family members back home, but you are directly paying for the education, and I would also get it in writing they will pay that money back, even without interest, in the future.. But the idea of just sending home money, where they can literally hire a maid, and you don't even have time to do your own dishes, and you're stuck going to a food bank for yourself? Don't let yourself get ashamed

I am not gonna lie, I resonate with this! I think this came from the mentality that everyone abroad is swimming in millions.
Exactly. And it’s a very misguided mentality.
I can relate well. Not actually for those that are abroad but just common to the people in diaspora. Thanks for sharing this 👍
Thank you my brother
I can relate to what you are saying. Am personally abroad and people back in my country think it's all okay where I am.
Exactly!!! There is this assumption that money flows on the street abroad
So apt
