That setting is gold. It can increase the visibility without washing out the colors, and the black floor stays correct. I use it on 50, but for BFI, I set it to 100, and it works amazing
The first game I tested was Dirt Rally. On my Mini-LED screen 50 looks too bright/washed out on a overcast weather. At least comparing to SDR and auto HDR, which was how I was playing before. So if you notice somethings like that you should tweak a bit. It is not too hard since it is all in realtime. Uses the ai cores of the rtx line of gpus and eats performance as such. It is hardware based to give better quality and it is in it's beta phase. Depends on title I think, personal testing needs to be done. Personally it is a viable alternative when you cannot force auto hdr, the other hdr tricks are not an option and have excellent performance to begin with.

Very nice, thanks for the video. ReShade with MajorPain HDR + Lilium shaders is fine and all, but this seems like a good overall upgrade to that. I was just trying to get Robocop: Rogue City to work with MajorPain + Lilium, but it would always result in a black screen, even with CSP_SCRGB override. I decided instead to try out RTX HDR and it worked like a charm instantly. It's just a shame that you have to physically unplug secondary monitors for RTX HDR to work, and I hope that Nvidia fixes that in a future update ASAP. Also, quick question, but I noticed you had RTX Dynamic Vibrance as an active filter. What's your opinion on that? Can it be used in conjunction with RTX HDR? Do you think it is worth using?
This isn’t my experience of “Just working” and I’ve noticed in certain games it can cause some significant render latency. But I’m glad they’ve done this, it’s about time HDR was added to the control panel.
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 I think if the game is using a custom render pipeline, it doesn’t integrate well with Nvidia’s system and it can cause up to like 700ms of lag which isn’t good.
Im very impressed by this too and want to dig a bit into the performance cost. Has to differ depending on the type of RTX card you have since it uses tensor cores.
You can change that by editing the hdr metadata from your G3 with CRU. You can set the peak brightness to 157 which is 1499nits. It will show up correctly in nvidia RTX after that.

Know anything about Windows HDR and colour profiles causing this on Windows 11? Primarily seems to do it when searching on Google which is also weird
There should be no performance loss. It's only having to place or covert a rec709 into rec2020. And maybe even expand the color, but this should be done once. The fact that you are losing frames to this means that it must be doing it on a frame by frame basis. Whereas mods are doing a one time color space conversion that applies passively. They need to optimize this.
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 weird thing is i was just testing auto hdr and digital vibrance myself and game picture was very similar what i have seen in your video when digital vibrance was on.
also quick question for you. When dynamic tone mapping is set to on, what is the maximum brightness in nits that is read in Windows calibration tool. I think it's great to have another option. I've become very partial to Special K recently, but this works on some games that I can't get SK working on properly. Elden Ring is a game I've always been unable to get HDR working right on and SK always crashes with the MGS alert sound, but RTX HDR comes perfect right out of the gate and I'm not seeing any performance changes since it is already locked at 60 fps.
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Thank you. I used this guide and I believe I have the best setup now for the upcoming expansion. The native HDR always gave me a washed out look like it was applying the tone mapping several times over, but I figured out after leaving this comment that it is just a bug with the HDR implementation of the game that can be fixed by restarting my PC. With that reshade, there's really no denying that native HDR (when working correctly) is superior to RTX HDR in Elden Ring. It's less noticeable outside, but in caves and dungeons RTX HDR looks so much more ugly and flat. Color banding is also a huge problem that is almost fully eliminated in native HDR. My experience working with these SDR to HDR tools is that they were very exciting at first, but the longer I use them the more the cracks begin to show. SK and RTX both have their unique issues, but anything applied over SDR content in post-processing is invariably at a disadvantage to true HDR. If Nvidia uses their AI HDR tech to modify the rendering pipeline at the source, then it would be real competition.
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 can’t wait brother! My minor experience with it just raises the black floor for me and destroys the HDR effect but I could have the wrong settings entered! Did you change any of the rtx hdr settings besides peak luminance to 800?

I totally get you, man, and thanks for your vids, new subscriber and really like your vid style and contents... I will say though, RTX HDR is the only HDR method I can get working in games that I have modded/running with RTX Remix. I tried auto HDR mod, I tried Lilium's through Reshade. RTX HDR is the only one for Remix, it costs performance, definitely 10% and i would say can be 15%, and I don't like that, but I still have to have it on because it looks really good. I wish i could get lilium's working though.
I did a Flesh windows install recently and it was not updated to 23H2. I did the update and now it's working flawlessly, loving it. Gave another life even to modern games like SFVI that don't have hdr, it's incredible now.
It uses the Tensor cores in 30 and 40 series cards for the AI to add RTX HDR to games. I know you said it doesn't work with DSR.. I'm guessing that means no DLDSR aswell?
I don't understand how this works. When i tried it out it just makes the screen washed out and the monitor doesn't go into HDR mode? like when I enable Auto HDR the screen shows a "HDR" pop up, letting me know its in HDR mode.
I was playing Sons of the Forest on my OLED monitor and kept thinking man, this doesn't look right. The blacks are grey, there's this weird banding between the dark areas and stuff, it just looked wrong. I spent hours trying to look at what the reason was. Anyway, heard about this and decided to try it. IMMEDIATELY this fixed the issue. Just turning on RTX HDR and the blacks are perfect, the color banding is gone. It's phenomenal. Auto HDR doesn't do this what so ever. Nvidia, you've done it. Pretty much any SDR game now looks perfect.
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Unfortunately no. In the Nvidia app, it says Direct X and Vulkan games only when you put your mouse cursor on RTX HDR in the settings of the app. I tried it in GTA V and Stray (the cat game which sadly does not have native HDR) though and it looks amazing. Yes, there is a performance hit, but the visuals are significantly better.
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 last question and then I promise I'll stop bothering you, some games already have HDR options, is it worth it to take the hassle and test its HDR options or can I just activate NVIDIA's HDR without taking the risk that the HDR options in the games are better. or is NVIDIA's HDR already perfect in terms of image quality, not to mention the loss of performance? ☺️

@@plasmatvforgaming9648So I found the issue. And I think the vast majority of people who can't even get the RTX HDR option to show up also have this issue. If you downloaded the windows insider build to access windows auto hdr when it first came out (which many of us did) and also had tpm 2.0 disabled in the bios for whatever reason (overclocking in my case), then once you upgraded to the full windows 11 you would end up getting stuck on the original build of windows 11 and be unable to update. Even though for years I had been regularly installing updates for windows 11 thinking everything was fine, they wouldn't actually install and I was unknowingly stuck on the launch build of windows 11 the entire time. Once I activated TPM 2.0 and reinstalled windows through an iso, all the settings became available, and I can now properly update windows.

But I do understand that the mere idea of tweaking these kinds of settings can be annoying =/
Thanks for sharing your experience with this setting, much appreciated man@@moghater
I think for people like me with a 3070 this is useful in older games. Quick and easy.
another deal breaker is that max refresh rate is 144 hz with rtx hdr , while playing on 280hz with windows hdr calibrated
Really!? I didn't know there was an FPS restriction
how is it in black areas in the game? like corners. In cyberpunk 2077, i can't see anything in black areas... Just completely black. HGIG, using the mod you suggested for the black, Windows calibration app, black and white stabilizer 10, fine tune dark 10 on the LG C1.
These are my final Cyberpunk settings

Please don't think I'm saying you are wrong. I'm asking. How the F can turning on HDR have a 20% performance impact?
I wonder the same
Uses the ai cores of the rtx line of gpus and eats performance as such. It is hardware based to give better quality and it is in it's beta phase. Depends on title I think, personal testing needs to be done. Personally it is a viable alternative when you cannot force auto hdr, the other hdr tricks are not an option and have excellent performance to begin with.
My question is how to setup best HDR settings with this. What is goal in games? How can I check it was succesful? Thanks!
Leave it at default Midtones and just change the Peak Brightness depending on Display tone mapping
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Thank you!
My RTX HDR option isn't even there. I thought I missed a piece of info and switched over to studio drivers just in case and it still isn't showing. I do have a sensor panel installed but even then it should just be grayed out and not completely missing right? Was going to try it out but I guess not.
No secondary monitor, try unplugging that and disable Gsync then restart
Are you on windows 10? you have to update to windows 11 to use this feature
This extends to Windows usage or it's only enabled in games?
Also for TH-cam videos with RTX Video
It was a bug, it was not acrually working at all. When it is active, I don't even think it is working right with HDR. It makes all the colors clip
This isn’t my experience of “Just working” and I’ve noticed in certain games it can cause some significant render latency. But I’m glad they’ve done this, it’s about time HDR was added to the control panel.
It does cost
@@plasmatvforgaming9648 I think if the game is using a custom render pipeline, it doesn’t integrate well with Nvidia’s system and it can cause up to like 700ms of lag which isn’t good.
Im very impressed by this too and want to dig a bit into the performance cost. Has to differ depending on the type of RTX card you have since it uses tensor cores.
Why is it capped to 1000 nits on my end? Do you know how I can get it to 1500 fpr my g3?
For me too, I'm exploring that now
You can change that by editing the hdr metadata from your G3 with CRU. You can set the peak brightness to 157 which is 1499nits. It will show up correctly in nvidia RTX after that.
I can't get it to work with Skyrim. The option is just greyed out
I guess not all games are supported for some reason. I don't know how to fix that
In-game filters only work for supported games.
Normal hdr does have a performance hit, albeit around 1%, whereas rtx hdr takes around 3-4%. Digital foundry made a video around this, I have no idea where people are getting 20% performance cost from.
Exactly
Digital foundry did test the modded Rtx HDR, the official one is more demanding + on midrange 3000 GPUs even more demanding.
@@stormborn7490 I still don’t buy the 20% performance cost, that has to be very user specific, definitely not a broad issue
@@CarlheinzRennie I reininstalled the driver with DDU, I double checked on multiple games its always -20% FPS , the modded Rtx HDR on low mode is -10% .
I think its cause of the low amount of tensor core on my Rtx 3060ti.
@@stormborn7490that’s very interesting, since DF tested with a 3070 and the difference between 3060ti is not that stark, like I said, it’s likely a per user experience. I would like to see more 3060ti results with different setups

Yes
Im very eager to test this out,

Hey, I'm having issues with RTX HDR and I'm wondering if you can share some thoughts?
When RTX HDR is enabled and a game has 100% white window, RTX HDR completely fumble and turns everything grey.
I know my monitor is capable of achieving higher brightness, because windows auto HDR looks absolutely fine, and SDR even looks brighter even.
Games look fine when there aren't 100% white windows, but this is really distracting during certain scenes.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 oh well, thanks anyway. Works fine with the 2.2 curve from your other video lol
