This was my first - and, for a long time, only - EC album which i bought at the time it came out. Had they not played "Doll Revolution" on the radio i would probably have never found him. A real gem. A pretty straight up rock record, but with such diversity and interesting twists that i kept coming back to it again snd again. His voice may be an aquired taste for some, but it's so unique and instantly recognizable, especially his vibrato.
I think that a remarkable and distinctive voice is often more important than a good or technically perfect one. It does much more for one's artistry. My brother hates EC's voice, haha. But being my favorite solo artist since 1989 (I started with 'Spike' and ended up having all his catalogue), I can assure he never ever sang one single note without emotion. And this is what matters. Cheers from Porto Alegre, Brazil.
@Igor_Vinicius exactly. I also have met many who dislike his voice. And i have a thing for character voices as well. It's the emotion that matters and has to fit with the music and lyrics. Dylan, Waits & Knopfler are all heroes of mine and not good singers in the classical sense.
@@al1976-v7m 😉 Excellent examples! You can have plenty of technically perfect singers, but only Dylan, Waits and Knopfler can be who they are. Probably wouldn't turn any chairs on The Voice, but at the same time, unmatching Artists, with a capital "A" (and also, of course, because of their superb songwriting). Have a nice weekend!
I feel facts like these are never appreciated the way they should: Costello is the only guitar player in the band, and still the performance kicks ass, and doesn't sound too bare or lacking anything (try to hear it through the awful home taping audio quality here, and picture how it must have been live).

Love Conan's fist-pounding enthusiasm and EC's fiery performance!
Simply genius
When I heard this album on NPR it changed my life. Also, no sarcasm. Also, I forgot.

Rebel in a nylon shirt.
Is keyboardist miming late '80s-early '90s Eric Clapton looks? :P
That "keyboardist" is the incomparable Steve Nieve!
Is that Josh freeze?
is this being sped up the joke?
