I started playing the guitar last year...at the age of 63. Never played an instrument before and it’s never too late to start. Elvis Costello is still the business.
Good for you - Just never give up! Only see it as fun and you'll learn way quicker. On another note, I didn't realise what a nice guy Elvis is. Top Bloke. Hope you are having fun with the guitar!
He's my personal hero..... I've had such an intensity for him since around the time he started out..... I've got to work backstage for tours directly with the entertainers when I got to work the last day of his tour with Sting/ police/concert show in San Diego I was thrilled just to even be around him..... Backstage he had his big tall black hat
@JPM What about Robert Fripp and David Byrne? I was just wonder if you like these musicians too? Because they are contemporaries, who have an equally interesting body of music they've released.
So cool to hear Elvis Costello say, "Sit down and watch TV and play along with the music"... EXACTLY how I started back in '78. But it was The Beverley Hillbillies, not The Love Boat. It is also the advice I give to kids just learning to play too. Despite TH-cam and all the free music to learn from, the casual approach of just sitting and watching and picking out a tune on 1 string lets you get familiar with the neck before trying to even play a chord.
So wonderful to see you Elvis. I'll never forget the first time I ever saw you on TV. It was the night you were the music act on Saturday Night Live!! You stopped the band from playing as you started the first song and then broke into Radio Radio instead! A much more controversial song!! Bless your musical Soul! Thanks for all the year's of fabulous music. ✌❤🎸🎶🤘 🇨🇦💃🐈
It must be an amazing feeling. The country that produced the music and artists that inspired his and our playing. Loves him and his music. He must be in heaven whilst alive. 🇬🇧
I'm an Elvis Costello fan from way back. Gotta say though, if I were teaching beginner I'd start with E minor. Two fingers right next to each other, no stretching. Give the poor kid something that sounds good right off the bat fer cripe sake! lol
I'm a professional musician & producer & have been paying my NYC rent w/it for nearly 20 years. I play guitar, piano, bass, drums, & vocals & I think the clarinet is damn sexy. Give me some hard downtempo jazz in the spirit of Arabian Nights, & no other instrument could do it justice like the clarinet.
I’m a carpet cleaner that pays a mortgage because of pee in folks Carpet. When I get home I play guitar for my enjoyment. I can play read and if I work hard I can shred a little bit but if I tried to pay my mortgage with my guitar I’d be homeless lol

This show makes me feel like in the 80’s when I used to watch Carson every week day. Guests and monologues are as good as it was on Carson’s show. Good job Jimmy Kimmel
Exactly! How funny that she was on a theme park ride with someone she thought was Elvis Costello. I think it wasn't Costello's son either but rather just some dude that looked like EC. And he just went along with it because who wouldn't when gorgeous Charlize Theron is involved lol.
Almost Blue, 1981, Elvis Costello goes country. What an album. I was a 15-year-old punk/psychobilly but this album changed my appreciation of MUSIC as opposed to genre.
Someone as experienced as Elvis Costello ought to know a much simpler easier way to ease people into guitar playing, especially if they've never ever tried playing a guitar chord before. Although she is a natural easy cord that is basic for anyone who knows how to play it's actually not a simple easy chord shape to make with your hand if you've never ever played guitar before. Once you learn how to do it muscle memory kicks in and it's super easy to do anytime and it feels simple and easy if you know already how to do it but for someone with zero experience this is a stupid cord to attempt to teach somebody. First you have to warrant in the idea of being capable of playing guitar because if they can't get the first or second thing you show them they will probably give up. For this reason you should always start someone off with something simple like a, a minor. E or E minor. A minor and E are actually the same cord but just one string up and require a relaxed position. E minor you could play with only two fingers on the same fret while strumming all the strings. Super easy and comfortable to play. the D chord is also a common basic cord that is very important for any musician and also has a fairly relaxed feel once people get the basics of A and A minor, and E and E minor under their belt. E minor is definitely the easiest to show a absolute beginner. Two fingers on the second fret. Strings that are right next to each other. Heck you could even use one finger to hold down both if you want.
Oh my God, right? If I were Elvis Costello at this point in his career I would not subject myself to such uncomfortable clothes. I'd go on TV shows wearing shorts, a breezy Hawaiian shirt and flip flops.
He is British, and dresses as such. That is a classic British tailored dress shirt and probably a beautiful Saville Row suit. Not everyone needs a university sweatshirt, shorts and flip flops.
How did Charlize Theron mistake a 14-year-old son for his father Elvis Costello? And what happened to her kids after she left them in the Disneyland Park "with a pickle and a Coke and not an adult" to be with Elvis Costello who was really his 14-year-old son?
More great songs than just about anyone ever? More than Dylan, more than Bowie? No. But he does have some good songs. Hyperbole is just part of the game.
He said ‘just about anybody’ so not sure what you’re on about. And honestly, when it comes to lyrics and melodies both, there are only a couple who can touch him.
Omg C Major chord wow Jimmy is so creative. They really worked hard on this show. I’m so inspired to play guitar now lol. I can play C major two lol 😂 how about C with G in the bass? What is that? That would take too long Jimmy’s fingers aren’t strong enough lol

I just saw Elvis Costello last night at The Tillis Center in Upper Brookville, the show was great as usual.
Elvis Costello and Peter Gabriel are my all-time favorite male musicians. 👏👏👏

I think Lorne Michaels told him that he'd never be on SNL again and that he was through and something like that. Neither came to pass.
For god sake, someone get Mr. Costello a chair befitting his royal status.
Because of Covid most talk shows have moved their chairs farther apart, and some guests are obviously not happy with that.
My favorite TV shows to play along with are Western's. The Rifleman is a great song to learn as you watch.

Jimmy: "Ooh on this guitar, okay" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I listened to the audiobook, and it was brilliant. I now want Elvis to narrate everything.

Cool. He mentioned La Santa Cecilia.
Imagine your beginner guitar being a Martin…
I used to advise people who wanted to learn guitar to sit in front of the tv and practice changing chords. It works.
Worked for me. No one told me to do it. Was just trying to make the hand positions automatic.
