I was just standing here watching this thing to myself man I wish I was in that audience. Yeah lucky you 5 times that's awesome. I'd love to see him once he's he's been my favorite for 30 years I can sing all his songs word-for- word
I've seen him 3 times myself. His approach to every song changes from time to time so it makes it interesting and engaging... you're not just listening to a "Best Of" that sounds like the record.
I love to look up older performances of what are now considered to be classic songs. It's cool to think about how much a song can resonate; how it can have just as strong an impact today as it did years ago. "Alison" is a beautiful example. It's poignant and means so much to so many different people who span across multiple generations today, and it will continue to do the same down the road. It's timeless. :)
I have seen Elvis 22 times🥰 am I really that old..scary. every show has been amazing. I was a little mod girl on a vespa my first show and the last was with my teenage daughter. Hopefully 2021 he can tour again
This is my favorite Elvis Costello song. I stumbled onto this the other day and was immediately blown away. Almost 50 years old and the audio quality is amazing. This is easily one of the best live videos I’ve heard on TH-cam. Elvis Costello and his band just killing it. This video is a treasure. I’ll be playing it forever for sure.
Fantasstic rendition, thanks for posting. I've seen him 20+ times, Alison has been different each time, just working around a bit with the melody, doing just him and Steve Nieve, fully acoustic, so many versions. He plays it at every show, of course, I cry every time.
One of the greatest rock tunes ever. That he was able to echo such a familiar tale but take it so far from cliche' makes it even better and more poignant... wow...
I can only guess what type of aim you're referring to but as with myself in love and loss it isn't always easy but dreams can always manifest into reality KEEP BELIEVING AND SMILING LUV!!
great stuff. I think this video is from 1982/3, the Rockpalast performance - the Attractions were on fire, and the horn section really added something to lots of the more uptempo songs
I'm an Allison and have loved this song since I was 18. My boyfriend introduced it to me. I broke up with him after 2 years (I don't really know why because he was lovely). He sent me many letters ( there wasn't mobile phones or social media ), and a tape with Alison on it-he said the words applied to me and I'd broken his heart. He sent me Against all odds and said the words were how he felt. I know that I was a terrible flirt and did things I'm not proud of... Also I did let one of his friends take off my party dress (and more). I wish we could meet up again but don't know how to track him down. My husband died of cancer 2 years ago and I miss him more every day. I'd love to see Colin again, even if it's just to be friends. I've gone off the subject a bit!!
To: Allie Nightingale, Just rediscoverd the greatness of Elvis Costello. I'm a an Elvis Presley fan and saw Elvis C play Elvis P guitar on the Johnathan Ross show. He plays Allison on it (TH-cam). Very emotional moment. I wondered if this great song meant anything to any Allisons and yes it has, yours is a very emoitional story. Hope you get what you want.
I have had the same experience with at least one of two other songs. On imagines that each of them was written for you or me directly. In a way they have been, but that is what the art of the song is about. In the case of Allison it is a vulnerable song. It cuts down love to the essential bits, the party dress, the pram. There is a powerful force behind this song, the other force is freedom and spontaneity, to be free from an attachment to a song. You can't go back. Live every day like it is new.
if a man ever wants to win my heart this is how they will have guaranteed success. Serenade me with this. The chorus hits me right in the heart 💖 ps. my name is Alison
Went around all my life singing this song. At 40 I had my first and only child. Her name, if course, is Allison. Although spelled different, it's still my favorite...
Managed to catch Elvis Costello and "The Rude Five" (I think that's the nane of his backing band that night. It was a running joke for myself and my buddie who went that night. One- because there was like 10 people on stage, maybe more? But certainly not five!! And they were perfect gentlemen that entire evening. Not one hint of bad behavior. My friend, Steve and I, were doing a lot of cocaine at that time, late 80s. So we agreed that we wouldn't do any until after the show, in deliberate effort to remembered and thus, enjoy the show. Guess what? One day the best shows I've ever seen. Just on fire.
#ugottalisten2b4udie #ValentinesDay #ElvisCostello I'm not gonna get too sentimental m Like those other sticky valentines i will Be smilin; again right now! I Love ya I Love Ya I Love ya I Love Ya ...
where can i find the whole set from rockplast 83? the only other one i've seen from this is "shabby doll" but it's around about the time they were touring constantly....they played 5 nights at the "CATS WHISKERS" in Streatham in a row and I was there every single night! I need a copy of this rockplast gig......please help EC fans...
big time song that stuck with us way into our adulthood, so many memories late 70's !
I've seen Elvis 5 times. He became popular my first year in college. There is no talent like him. 30 years later he still owns music.

I'm bummed that someone has seen him 22 times and I never have. Lol
If he tours again I'M THERE!
This is his best performance of this beautifull song, the lick he's singing (improvising!) is one of the best ever. The pianist is great!
Steve Nieve.

Excellent version - top of his game!
A beautiful, timeless song. Hopefully one day artists will make music like this again.
saw this guy when i was 15 - am now 50 and he had 3 albums out when i saw him live. absolutely stunning. still is a genius. thanks elvis :-)

Brilliant - always has been always will be....
40 years ago? Damn, still in love.
When I really got into music in ‘82, I played this song thousands of times, especially for my sister, ‘the nicer Alison.’ Lol
Ashley Pettus, im still keeping Alison since 1985. thank for all those unforgetable moment...
Love this song . Just realized , after 40 years , that this sounds like a Bruce Springsteen / E Street Band number ... very similar style
This guy is a genius , one of my favorite songs. Superb
Elvis is quality…always.. brilliant 🤩
One of the greatest rock tunes ever. That he was able to echo such a familiar tale but take it so far from cliche' makes it even better and more poignant... wow...
Can't believe l didn't know this song existed. A song with my name as its title. And it's really beautiful
Check out Linda Ronstadt's remake of it, around that same year. Kinda freaks you out though to hear a gal singing a "dude's song" re: another female.
my name is Alison and after all these years. I wish my aim was true. x
I can only guess what type of aim you're referring to but as with myself in love and loss it isn't always easy but dreams can always manifest into reality KEEP BELIEVING AND SMILING LUV!!
it is
Is this world still killing you?🤣
This is one of my favorite renditions of one of my favorite songs! Love the horns...
Classic and very well recorded.
Elvis Costello has a soft and sexy voice. The construction of this love song is one of the reasons he helped transform new wave.
Thank you for posting this. Love this song and love Elvis!!!
BAD ASS ......and I listen to everything from Petty to some rap music
Happy 40th Alison...release date was May 21, 1977...remember it like it was yesterday...
Have to believe Costello was active clear back then .. He seems so '80ish (or even '90ish) ...
saw it live at Dominion Theatre, then there was a IRA fucking bomb scare! Gotta love London 1970-1980's
Love it!! The best!
My favorite song of all time, beautiful!
A special man make me know this incredible song... 💛

Brilliant Elvis

if a man ever wants to win my heart this is how they will have guaranteed success. Serenade me with this. The chorus hits me right in the heart 💖 ps. my name is Alison
Just discovered this one from The Vault. My namesake (sp?). Awww, I love you too, Declan!
fun fact: the guys on the horns are from Dexys Midnight Runners
Such a brilliant song
Thank you for posting my song he wrote for me~~~~~
Costello is straight up the best. Saw him play with the Police a few years ago, one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Jamie P. he is the best...so underrated... top drawer ...
A truly great video!
One of the best version's he's done
Nice song, I like it.
Seen the man numerous times other week at Sheffield just gets better
Eleanor & Park is so good... That and Playlist Of The Dead brought me here 😨😔
The best song of Elvis Costello.
Went around all my life singing this song. At 40 I had my first and only child. Her name, if course, is Allison. Although spelled different, it's still my favorite...
Throwback Costello ... talent
spine tingling - my aim is true
Underrated genius!
Elvis Costello has been at Rockpalast twice - in June '78 and in October '83. This is from the '83 gig (Alison is not on the '78 setlist)
Looking forward to seeing him in Perth in a couple of weeks.
Obrigada Eleanor & Park por essa musica
the king is still in the building ....
Vim aqui por causa do livro Impecáveis de Pll 🌚

Elvis Costello and the Attractions
I saw 1977 then saw the outfits they were wearing. Makes more sense looking at the description and seeing 1983. Guess the song was written in '77.
What is the lyrics after 2:30 ? I dont know english very well..
Good song

No way was this 1977, as EC is considerably older and chubbier and this is a different arrangement -- but still a great tune.
My aim ain't true, not for years now hehe
Me too. Diana Krall got him!
I'm not that late :D
.....APPARENTLY inspired in NO small part by The Spinners' CLASSIC "Ghetto Child' (!)
