  • For one week, I challenge you to use your cellular connected tablet (iPad Pro for me) as your daily driver. No smartphones allowed! It was actually pretty enlightening and I enjoyed it. I have discovered I REALLY LIKE the iPad Pro and will continue to use it as my main device as much as possible!

    First of all, excellent vid.
    Second, beyond the subject matter, it was SO refreshing to watch a tech vid that wasn’t the same.....old......thing. Most tech people I follow are all just rehashing the same subjects with their take. This was just super interesting, relevant and cool.
    Third, as an owner of an iPad Pro and pencil and Pad & Quill leather case with pencil holder (pricey but highly recommended) I really appreciate you doing this experiment. I already love my iPad and your video further solidified my enjoyment. I’ll be trying this experiment.
    So yeah....thanks! 😊🤙🏼

    I’ve done this before when my phone took a crap. Just poped the sim from my phone into my iPad Pro and it was ready to go. Another really great thing: there’s split screen and you can literally have two different browsers going at the same time with 2 people lightly browsing.

    I think that I've not had a smart phone or for that matter cellular phone in general for the past 6 years and I've not missed out on anything. Actually it was when I was in college that I got rid of my phone. I just didn't find it to be useful I was paying 60 odd bucks a month for something I only used to listen to music with. Nah you aren't picking on me every time it ever comes up in conversation or someone asks for my number they get really weird out being that I'm 26 and most people my age are glued to their phones.

    • @jejunamja
      @jejunamja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jaxxice ... I run a small contracting business and I hated it when cell phones became the deal because then people could bug me all the time before I would just go home and listen to my answering machine now life has gotten way busier... I mean yes it's nice to have music on my cell phone and always have a camera and I have books on my phone and I do on my checking and emails there's pluses but you know if you have a computer at home you don't need to carry one in your pocket anyway if it works for you keep at it.

    I happen to use my iPad Pro 12.9, rather than my iPhone X, a lot of the time. Though I have use cases for both devices, the iPad Pro seems to be a media consumption devices and a home office computer, the iPhone X is more like a text messenger device and for listening to music, the iPad is useful for streaming video, so my home office work, editing videos and photos. To me, BOTH together are my daily driver, if you like.

    Im so glad you did this video Erica. I have used Ipad Pro 10.5 256GB for the last 8months as my daily driver. I use it for watching youtube, movies, facebook and surfing safari. The only thing I cannot do with it is sending messages and do calls. I always have my phone with me for Wi-Fi hotspot so that's why I don't need cellular 4G. I wish you also could call by using a headphone or earphone. Of course, the Ipad is not for walking around, but its a great device for travel. An example I use the train/bus every day for work, those 45minute on the train with a big display front of me is the most enjoyable moments. You put the iPad in your bag, bring out your smartphone for music while you walk to work. I can tell you the only reason I have a Galaxy s8 plus device, if for a call. If I could call and send a message on an iPad. I would never buy a smartphone again. I use Bose QuietControl 30 as my daily Earphone and its the best headphone I have ever used. I have bought this earphone twice, I can use it for 3hours without feeling tired of it.

    I have been using an iPad mini for a phone for years by downloading hangouts and just pay $30 a month for service without a cell phone bill. It’s the best of both worlds and the mini can fit in my front pocket. I have now discovered the Samsung s3 watch and purchased that for my phone service for $5 a month and still have my mini but the watch works so well. Can’t use the Apple Watch because you have to have phone service to make the watch work which means it is really not a true standalone device. So glad this video was posted. Oh and I just purchased the Apple AirPods that works so well with any Apple or Android tablet, a little pricey but worth it.

    This got me excited because my iPad Pro was my "phone" for about a year while I was waiting for my upgrade. I used Google Hangouts for the phone and text feature. Everything else worked just like an iPhone. It wasn't so bad. The only time it wasn't so great was when I would go to concerts. Not all venues allowed such a device inside so I often had to leave it home and be out late at night without any form of communication. Other than that, it was very capable.

    I tried this back when the original Note 8 (tablet) came out with their cellular version. At the time Tmobile offered unlimited data only. It was a fairly viable set up. Carried it in my bookbag everyday while it was connected to a bluetooth headset. Worked out pretty damned well. Now it's too expensive to go tablet only.

      Arman Talwar you can use the hotspot of your phone. But that way you’ll need to carry your phone with you anyway. You won’t be able to leave it at home. If that’s what you’re planning then I don’t see any problem in using the iPad as the primary device. However, I don’t know about the google hangouts calling capabilities as I haven’t tried it myself. You can give it a shot.

    • @eichelbergergary
      @eichelbergergary 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is wrong. Several apps even let you secure a number with a local area code and it functions just like a "real" phone, exactly.

    • @frankwalder3608
      @frankwalder3608 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Eichelberger, I don’t know what “apps” you’re referring to, but there are only two ways to make a mobile phone call. One way is to use a hardware based voice connection, which is not supported by tablets or carriers otherwise there would be a phone icon on the default desktop. The other way is to use an IP address (VoIP) through the Internet. An app such as Skype can do this, and Apple enables this sort of function within its ecosystem using an iPhone as a router.

    • @eichelbergergary
      @eichelbergergary 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Walder you do not need an iphone. Voip is a data driven format. Any data plan will work. I have no iphone. The calling apps afe all data plan based. Voip uses data packets, not analog. I have been doing this for years on the ipad mini. My only device.

    • @frankwalder3608
      @frankwalder3608 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Eichelberger, I know it’s data driven. That’s what IP based VoIP is. You have something like that if you don’t have a configured iPhone. I’m telling you what you are trying to tell me!

    I've have always wanted to try this. I HATE having to carry around 2 devices and find the smartphone way more distracting. Only one HUGE problem that you didn't mention. NO Apple Watch with just an iPad. Also, I'm an AT&T customer so no way to receive calls or text messages with just an iPad. *Sigh* I'll keep dreaming that one day we'll have just one device to rule them all! But Alas, Apple will never allow that. Why make it so we can get by with just one device when we're willing to keep paying for 2 or 3? It would be stupid of them from a business standpoint to do that.

I find the call quality to be stellar when I have Wi-Fi Calling enabled and in use over LTE through iOS. I was lucky enough to get the T-Mobile ONE tablet plan with HD video for free a while ago, which makes owning the cellular version that much more worthwhile. Thanks again for this great video!

  • @The905Studios
    @The905Studios 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’m not sure how this would be freeing. You’re not exactly taking tech out of your day with this challenge. Using an iPad would be very similar to using an iPhone no? Great video as always.

    • @EricaGriffin

      You don’t have to take tech out of your day to be freeing...just change HOW you use it.

    • @The905Studios
      @The905Studios 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Erica Griffin I suppose I was looking at it differently. I think it’s a neat experience. It made a lot more sense than the use an older phone one you did. For me though for it to be freeing would be to change how I used tech in general. Not what device I used it on. When you used an old phone for a week it got in the way. Made you understand how much you relied on tech. This showed you how much you rely on a smaller screen but all things considered didn’t change how you live life. Maybe slowed it down a little. I think a neat trick would be using a phone but only on wifi. If only using an iPod touch. Then go on a trip using map quest or something. This way you’d still get full use of your device at points during the day. But life would change and you’d remember what it was like not long ago.

    • @Stupranos
      @Stupranos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1
