This video and this guy is phantastic. It is easy to understand and play together. Welcome all guitarist in my age, and the younger and older too.
I agree! These lessons are golden. I have a similar situation to you. This is probably the most practical out of the box way of doing pentatonic scale leads. Knowing the 5 boxes is great, but too many people kinda find a box and stay in it. Even as simple as this shape is, it sounds more interesting because of the movement up the neck. Well done. Great advice for newer players or those who haven't dabbled a ton in pentatonic scales before.

I was trying many ways of how to understand the pentatonic scale. But this blow my mind. The idea of smaller boxes in different positions. It's so obvious, but no one was able to put it this way. I feel like I finally get it. Thank you so so much for this video. This was one of those ''aha moments''.

Spot on! I've always used that pattern starting on the root note for major scale solos....but just never thought about it for minor scale by starting a step lower. Thanks!
Been playing a while and know my boxes, but found your video very helpful and effective. Incredible how much melody and feeling you can get with this simple concept. Nice video. Very clear and understandable. Thank You!
I can’t thank you enough for this video. I’ve been playing for about a year and have really plateaued over the last six months. I’ve found myself playing the same chords and the basics but unable to progress because I find all of these scales so confusing as a beginner. But this video explained it all so clearly. I have been practicing with this method for the last 3 nights and have made more progress in the last 3 days than I have in the past 6 months. You are a great teacher - please continue making more of these videos.
You need Brian at Zombie Guitar. Amazing teacher. Did you learn all 5 shapes and how to connect them? You should. Then learn all the notes names on the fretboard at a glance. FYI, I just ran up the Watchman Trail at Zion- amazing run. Did Angles Landing too. Ran my fastest mile last week. It's cool since I am getting old! 🤭
Wow. Probably one of the best, most straight forward videos Ive seen. Really gets someone playing the blues straightaway while learning their scales and theory.
This was the way I was shown to play lead from the start, it was always the half step notes that frustrated me though, but with a lot of practice (especially if your not exactly pitch perfect naturally, as I'm not ) you start to understand and hear where to play them. I'm surprised no one has explained it like this before, I think you've helped a lot of people start being more comfortable with creating a simple melodic solo, rather than just playing fast and hoping no one notices they're not really playing anything, if you know what I mean. Wish I'd have posted this one years ago, I just didn't think it was a "proper " technique, looks like I should've though, there's no really wrong way to play if it works 😀
I have to compliment you on your presentation of the lessons. I’ve searched through videos and mostly skipped them because everything was so hard to grasp. I gave a sigh of relief when I came across your channel. Clear and precise instructions with large diagrams to look at….perfect. Thank you
Man. I've been playing for a while and heard about shapes but never really looked into it with any seriousness till today. This is f*#king game changing for someone like me that struggled for so long trying to learn leads with traditional scales. Well done and thanks mate!
This was the first scale pattern I had "discovered". I called it my 2-3 pattern and at 16, without any music theory knowledge, it got me into rock bands playing minor concerts, parties, jam sessions. Imagine my disappointment upon realizing it was simply the pentatonic scale 🤣 I thought I had discovered something monumental 😱
Excellent video, simple and clear - don’t know how many times I’ve looked at these shapes but I think the penny’s finally just dropped - that looks attainable, I’m going to get right on it, thanks for sharing.
Clear, concise and very informative. You have a style that is fluid and your English is clear, making it very easy to learn. Thank you for the lesson. 🙏
Bravo, for showing how easy it is to connect riffs. Well done, short, concise and no draggy parts to the video! This is one of the best videos on utube and was verrrry enjoyable!
Jules, well done! I used this up/down the neck/5 note system on a song I just recorded. Added a nice jazz chord to the end for a little flair. I am very pleased to have come across this lesson randomly today -- a gift! I have subscribed. Thank you.
I’ve just discovered your channel. Your lessons are amazing! So easy to follow and well explained. I’m a singer/songwriter who knows a lot of chords but I’ve always found scales a real chore to learn. You really break it all down really well. Great stuff! Keep it up!
72 years old and have wanted to play improvisational slow blues most my life. Have taken several courses from TH-cam but I've never had such an "Aaha" momen t as I did listening to only about 6 minutes of your superb explanation. I'll apply the same concept to 4 and 5 . Thanks!
Thanks for a really nice and Simple, but Quite Effective, concept my friend. Your time and efforts are very appreciated; I'm confident this will help a "Lot" of players out there...
Really great. I just wanted some recall of the basics as I bring back my guitars from their cases once again at 61 YO. Your way of teaching finally gives many more reasons to play again more often. I also had a look at Major, Minor, blue note and so on. Thanks from France. I subscribed and will have a look at your other videos.
This isn't the only video showing how to get you from the bottom to the top of the neck with pentatonic scales/shapes, but this explains it in a MUCH more intuitive, stripped-down way, which makes the whole idea waaay easier to grasp and understand. Great stuff, keep it coming!
i wish i could of started this lesson the first time i ever picked up a guitar more than 45 years ago, unfortunately my progress has been generally various levels of mediocrity, with this you are learning relationships and notes across the entire fretboard and initially bypassing all the pain and frustration of starting with chord sequences or whatever else, thanks so much, i guess in a way i need to find easier ways to play as opposed to the idea that playing well means complicated. If you are 15 and starting out, i'd recommend this lesson, an hour a day, you'll know the fretboard and relate to chords and everything else so much quicker and best of all you'll be playing some impressive enjoyable sounds in no time
@@ebisu8824 ironic, if you are from the spelling checking police, as surely this is about rock n roll, d'yer maker, licks, fills and all round improvisation, even interpretation, or varying things depending on mood, maybe go back to your corporate linkedin world of correctness, 'innit hard when you discover that y'aint really where it's at?'

I plan on watching and digesting more simple, to the point lessons. Lord knows, I hate learning scales. This makes it less painful and boring to learn.
Joe Mangino Awesome! I've been searching for an easier way to learn how to play a simple song and make it sound like I really knew how to play. This scale works like magic. I've watched just about every guitar lesson video on TH-cam and yours is better than all of them put together. Is there anyway to get that backing track? Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you! Joe
Thank you very much for this video, Jules. I'm getting back into guitar after a 25 year layoff, and I am looking for simpler, more straightforward explanations on playing. This video fits that perfectly. I've subscribed and will be looking at your other videos this evening.
I like the video, but the inset graphic is super confusing because you have the frets going from 1 through 8 right to left instead of left to right like everyone else does....

A well laid out and presented video, giving clear and concise instructions that can be easily followed.
Awesome lesson, so easy to follow. Also, the backing track sounds very George Harrison-esque, excellent.
BRILIANT! A ascending and decending run...made simple!
Not confusing...For simple minded people...Like Me!👍🏻😉
AMAZING!!!!!!! Thank you Jules for the best instruction on how to learn to solo! YOU ROCK!
It Got You Gigs!
It was Monumental !
Precisely
Monumental is relative and if it was for u - nothing else matter (no that’s not a song)
discovering it on your own is monumental
Same, discovering that I could implement this on any key at 15 felt amazing
Excellent video, simple and clear - don’t know how many times I’ve looked at these shapes but I think the penny’s finally just dropped - that looks attainable, I’m going to get right on it, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for one of the most informative videos I have seen, was a bit confused with the diagrams but got my head round it but thank you very much 😀
Jay, yes was confused at first as the TAB are the wrong way round for me !
Felt the same 😂
If i may, may i ask you a question?
What does mean that “ penny’s dropped”?
@@이오니언-y5v it means that you suddenly understand what is going on!
Soooo helpful Jules. 50 years of messing about and this lesson made the most usable sense. Cheers. 🍺
Thank you.
This truly is a gift. One of the best things I've ever seen on TH-cam pertaining to guitar instruction.
@@gordonipock9385 totally agree. Instruction, not chatter. Well planned lesson!
I’ve just discovered your channel. Your lessons are amazing! So easy to follow and well explained. I’m a singer/songwriter who knows a lot of chords but I’ve always found scales a real chore to learn. You really break it all down really well. Great stuff! Keep it up!
I thoroughly enjoy all of your tutorials!👍💯🎸🎶
72 years old and have wanted to play improvisational slow blues most my life. Have taken several courses from TH-cam but I've never had such an "Aaha" momen t as I did listening to only about 6 minutes of your superb explanation. I'll apply the same concept to 4 and 5 . Thanks!
Wonderful! I love how you broke that down into super simple terms. You helped me out a lot! :-)
Just getting started at 59....
This isn't the only video showing how to get you from the bottom to the top of the neck with pentatonic scales/shapes, but this explains it in a MUCH more intuitive, stripped-down way, which makes the whole idea waaay easier to grasp and understand. Great stuff, keep it coming!
What a great lesson. I really appreciate your instruction. That little lesson made practice more fun. 😊 🙏 😊.
i wish i could of started this lesson the first time i ever picked up a guitar more than 45 years ago, unfortunately my progress has been generally various levels of mediocrity, with this you are learning relationships and notes across the entire fretboard and initially bypassing all the pain and frustration of starting with chord sequences or whatever else, thanks so much, i guess in a way i need to find easier ways to play as opposed to the idea that playing well means complicated. If you are 15 and starting out, i'd recommend this lesson, an hour a day, you'll know the fretboard and relate to chords and everything else so much quicker and best of all you'll be playing some impressive enjoyable sounds in no time
*could've or could have NEVER could of
@@ebisu8824 ironic, if you are from the spelling checking police, as surely this is about rock n roll, d'yer maker, licks, fills and all round improvisation, even interpretation, or varying things depending on mood, maybe go back to your corporate linkedin world of correctness, 'innit hard when you discover that y'aint really where it's at?'
Very well done and helpful! Can you provide a link to the backing track?
How can i get that backing track please
You can download here: payhip.com/b/3IfnM
This is my kind of tutorial. Simple, effective, no silly fret acrobatics to muck up the lesson and most importantly, a teacher who isn't a guitar snob.
Kudos🙌. I plan on watching and digesting more simple, to the point lessons. Lord knows, I hate learning scales. This makes it less painful and boring to learn.
Agree 100%
Great stuff and really helpful. A PDF of the boxes as you diagramed them in the video would be welcomed!! Thanks for the video and lesson. Super cool
what a great teacher you are sir!..
thank you for an easy step-by-step pentatonic walkthrough.
Joe Mangino
Awesome!
Welcome back, we’ve been waiting for your return 😆
So clear, helpful, and useful; thanks!
I subscribed and hope I keep seeing your tutorials O a. 81 and still with the boxes every day and trying to learn modes as well
Awesome. I got to learn something I haven''t thought possible for years in just a 9 minute video. Thank you for sharing.
Such a great clear, concise and calm teacher.
I like the video, but the inset graphic is super confusing because you have the frets going from 1 through 8 right to left instead of left to right like everyone else does....
I'm picking up the guitar again after letting it lie for twenty years. I'm using your instructional videos as a road map back to where I used to be, only this time I'm learning the proper way to get there using the techniques you are teaching. Thank you so much for your time and trouble and for helping me get back in the swing, one sore fingertip at a time 🙂
Get in person lessons it will help you. I did this and was self taught. Even 6 months will get you going in the right direction. Zombie Guitar online is awesome too BTW. I use that site...but in person with a Berklee guy at first is ideal.
Truly a natural born, patient instructor....Great tutorial. .Thank you Jules !
Wow! So easy to understand such a powerful concept. Great job!
Brilliant! The way you broke down the concept triggered a wonderful learning experience for me. Subscribed. Many thanks! 😎👍🏻 🎸
Excellent video!! You have opened the door for many to start playing lead guitar. Great Job!!!
Thank you for the excellent teaching you make it very easy to understand. Best one I have seen yet👍
Hi! I've known about and been practicing the pentatonic scale/boxes. but im stuck in a rut. You sir just gave me the best instructional video ive seen about the pentatonic scale. absolutely awesome - it electrified my creative juices! cant wait to form solos out of these simple yet very applicable/soulful lessons you gave! Thank you very much!!
You're a very good teacher. I've been playin since 1980 and I learn alot of cool stuff from every lesson that I've seen. Thanks!
Fantastic video ... I recently stumbled upon this. I am a 70 year old and I have been looking for some time for instruction on playing lead guitar all across the neck. This video does it in spades. Kudos my new friend.
An excellent tutorial, thank you. You kept it simple, slow and repeated the pattern, so much easier to pick up than a constantly changing pattern. I’ve got it now, thanks !
As many have said--great lesson! This all gets really mind-blowing when you realize that you can go up to fret 8 on the 6th string, play the C-D-E sequence, and start all over again!
I just started playing ... Out of all the videos I have watched you explain things really simple and easy to catch on too. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us🙏🏽
this is lovely,i have literally search for this kind of lesson for years...and coincedentally i am finally being blessed. thanks a bunch
Wonderfully explained the pentatonic scales with leads. Thank you for your great work. 👏👏
Thank you for breaking it down simply! Most of these channels want to give you a full course in music theory, just to explain a 5 note scale! Thank you!!!
this is the first time i have made any progress with a backing track. Thank you so much for the lesson!
You can't imagine how unbelievable helpful this was!
Thank you so much.
I have watch countless videos on TH-cam. This is honestly the best practical channel for guitarists period!
Thank you for your videos. I never thought I could play lead guitar, but after practicing your techniques I'm starting to think I can.
