I remember growing up as a kid in an urban neighborhood we used to flip for fun. I wish somebody would have steered some of us in this direction because we only knew about football, baseball, and basketball. We had some truly incredible boys out there. I remember one kid could walk up trees and flip off them like it was breathing. I could do 15 back flips in a row, twist, summers, half twist, and this is all in the grass. I think I'm going to try to get the schools in my community to bring in gymnastics and swimming.

People need to stop criticizing Biles for having the good sense to recognize when her brain wasn't working right. That's what happened. It's the brain's/body's reaction to enormous stress. Her brain effectively 'shut down' so that she couldn't judge her spatial position. And that is very dangerous. There is a very informative interview with an expert consultant (I think I saw it on CNN or the NY Times...who does not currently work with Biles) that explains what happened. He said he could see it happening to her in her previous performances before her final vault. He could tell she was actually going through the air with no knowledge of where she was in her space, and therefore, she had no way of knowing where or how to land. It doesn't happen to everybody because everybody is different. It is not a matter of her 'chickening out' or being unprofessional. She showed good judgement. One day, the Olympics will be a thing of the past for her (like all Olympiads) and being safe and not breaking your back or neck during a landing/fall is more important than a piece of metal hung around your neck. GOAT with nothig to prove.
Thank You 👏👏👏👏👏 when they can't explain a star, they try to bring it down. So happy young women athletes are finally speaking out and taking care of their bodies and mental health. It's long overdue.

I would be very interested on how many pounds of pressure she hits the ground with. Gymnasts, especially female ones, take a huge beating on their joints. I heard Mary Lou Rhetton needed hip surgery years later.

IKR. She is able to pick up speed because she is short. Maybe in her school days, she may have hated how short she was. I just don't know who it is that told her that her weakness is actually her strongest suit or what insecurities she went through. Being short and tiny is not terrible nor is being tall is great. PLUS, she is strong physically and mentally. Man the human body and its love/hate wonders.

BuLL eTZ uhm... in case you haven’t realized she hasn’t achieved anything outside of cheating a system... all she does is choose a routine that starts off with such an incredibly high starting score that she can screw up 3 or 4 times (which she normally does if not more) and because of her starting score even the ones who completely perfectly clean runs (which is what I thought was the whole point🤷🏻♂️) stand no chance in catching her... all this is going too do is lead to more people doing routines that they know they can’t do cleanly or safely just in hopes of keeping up with her... she should have already been disqualified for this multiple times (and yes even in the olympics)

She touched the beam once during the event finals, she didn't fall off the beam so that is really overexaggerating it.

Current day, I just watched her earlier, she has added more difficult routines, mind blowing. What she is doing on the BEAM is crazy!! Everyone else just trying to keep up! Just amazing and a beautiful, humble and nice young lady.

Simone is not only brilliant, but she's also a beautiful person it seems. I've listened to her interviews & watched her reaction when she was beaten on the beam. She was gracious & had a big smile as usual. America is torn with racism at the moment from both white & black & I say that as an Irish guy looking from the outside. I pray that people like Simone can use her influence & fame for good, not to use her platform for blame or to take sides. I know she won't, she is a credit to her family & is the face of America I want to see.. She can be a truly Great American & most importantly, a great human being.

They name a move after you when you are the first to do it in International competition, The Phillips (after my teammate), & the Patterson (Carly Patterson's dismount on beam in the London Olympics), my cousin. I'm a former Elite gymnast/coach/choreographer, you can look up the names of common gymnastics skills today & see who they are named after....usually Russian gymnasts, why the names are so difficult to spell, & they are the gymnasts who originally performed the move in International competition.
And now she's done something even more spectacular.

She has Super Human aerial dynamic capabilities, that's just constantly have you in shock and awe..it looks so easy how she soars and rips the gravity turn and twisting in the air, but you know how extremely difficult it is for the average or even above average person to do. She is an amazing person to watch in sports today. I never watched the Olympics, let alone gymnastics until I seen this young lady in action. She is sooooooo Amazing!! What a God given Talent she has...I wish her nothing but continues success..She worked very hard for and deserves it more than anyone can imagine..😃😀😉☺

So incredible! Thank you for a very interesting video. I don't think Simone is human though...she must be a super human or a super hero. She does stuff I have NEVER in my life time seen other gymnasts do with incredible ease.
The most impressive part is not only she pocesess this humongous amount of strenght in her legs but is ALSO able to control it so impecably that literally one muscle tensed the wrong way could get her hurt, yet she lands perfectly.
what about the floor itself? it's not hard and rigid; it has a degree of rebound (bouncy). i'm totally ignorant, but i kind of suspect that the rebound characteristics in gymnastics floors has changed over the years and decades. the rebound properties permit jumping higher. i wonder how different it is now compared to 30 years ago.

It seems when she does the layout she goes *HIGHER* and when she twist she’s still in a very good height of air and when she lands it’s amazing! She has a very little jump then she just FLYS! I’m so proud of her.
It is a given that at some future occasion, there will be an athlete that will make the theoretical maneuver become real. But until then, Simone Biles is without question the gold standard of women's gymnastics in the present.

Cracked had an interesting article about women gymnasts and one of the points was that they start early on a diet that keeps them from growing too tall, effectively stunting their growth and start competing at younger ages when they are still light and flexible. So there's some interesting bio mechanics at work too.
Even though I am "5'2" I love the gymnastics team it is the one sport where being short is an advantage.
All I have to say is for those who are half-a** don't care about Olympians and the focus and dedication they put into things, saying she let her team and USA down, she did the right thing in Japan because at the end of the day, she stepped aside and let others lead knowing she herself couldn't do her best. Now that is a true sportswoman!!!!!

He didn't mention that the triple layout was on a tumble track which is a trampoline. No one has done a triple layout on the floor yet. I love this sport. I've been doing it since I was a little kid.
