🤔 Bryan, that was most insightful and instructive-- especially how relatively easy the hub motor swap is. Consider kits with only a latest/higher voltage Hub motor, controller, battery and display for us guys that still have the 20x3 inch older (1st Gen?) eBikes (like the Swagtron EB-8 and other models). Using EB-8 as an example, it may be possible to put the Swagtron EB-8 existing rear wheel hub motor and wheel to the front of the bike to keep the existing voltage and wiring harness, and add a more powerful and faster Citizen Performance 20x3in Rim (using the existing knotty tire) and modern high voltage Hub motor kit with its own controller and Battery to the rear. (BTW, We're still making progress on this end, too). Thank you for the great video instructions! 👏
I appreciate the effort. I was hoping that Wired would come up with a 20 inch wheel. I'm looking at the Furious EMX-One X. I waiting for Furious to get their website updated. I talked with one of the salesguys. He said that they will be coming out with the second battery. The salesguy said that it may come with the same price tag. They should be delivered by November. Good luck on your creative endeavors!
Love this idea for a smaller rider. Also you might consider shorter cranks. I actually took off the 170mm and put on 140mm. Shockingly, it works great. Actually it's easier to peddle and faster. Of course the peddle clearance is higher off the ground. I'm 5'8".
A one-inch lowering of the seat isn't mush, however, the same one-inch lowering of the pedal could be the difference between a clean turn and throwing yourself of the bike in a corner.
I haven’t been getting your notifications, in a while, so I’m a little behind on what you’ve been up to. Is this your store? You’re selling e-bikes, now! Perfect! I love your videos, even if I’m not interested in the bike you are talking about.
I guess is it lighter/less cumbersome to handle? the regular size felt massive & cumbersome getting it through door way, putting it away and getting it out, and loading on bike racks, getting on & off to maneuver bike around obstacles on trail, etc.
Ive got a 24" wheel bike which is cool, but absolute nightmare finding decent tires. There are hundreds of 26" and 20" available but 24" are very hard to find.
I'm 5'9 with 30 inch inseam and on the new wire cruiser with seat lowered all the way down, I have a about 2 inche my heel is off the ground, only front foot pad touches when i sit on seat with bike straight up no leaning , so 1inch lower i still wouldn't be flat footed which is my wish but i'm sure it would help. also there are post in facebook groups of new cruiser shutting down because of high temperatures with mostly throttle only or climbing hills. my new cruiser shutdown at 310 degrees not even 30 yards up a hill and using mostly throttle only prior, are the new 2024 plus model running hotter, it didint take much for temps to generally be above 200 degrees can you do test with temperature on new bike, my last cruiser had no issues with heat temperture shutting down with same areas of riding. to have such a powerful bike and not able to use it on hill climbing is a concern for me, please look into this, thanks for all the great videos.
Bryan, I have a Great tip for you! Take a 33 gallon trash can , flip the lid upside-down and set it back into the can. Now you have a Great place to work on your wheel. If you drop any screws you can retrieve them easily. What do you think? Your welcome!
That was pretty awesome to watch. Thanks for doing the experiment. What I'm more interested in is to see if changing out the battery and controller can increase the speed to about 55. Might have to change out the screen as well because I think the screen is only rated for 60 volts.
I like the look of the 24” wheels a lot more than the 26” ones. And while it’s true the bike seat height only drops an inch that can be a big difference for some potential owners. Personally I would opt for 24” wheels if I had the choice but that’s just me. Is there a difference in crank arm length to accommodate 24” wheels? Rick H.
If you are a short rider it makes a lot of difference. You should select a bike frame that fits you, which is when you straddle the bike, you should have a clearance 1-2 inches between the top tube and your crotch for safety. For a step through E-bike probably doesn't make any difference. That's the main reason why the manufacturer made a step through frame so that one frame fits all.
Please try moped/light dirt bike style wheels. They come in many different sizes and some sizes are close to 26". They use much more puncture resistant tires than regular fat bike.
Have you tried seeing if the big 1500w motor fits in the front of the bike? (Just to experiment.). Then maybe finding the right forks to handle the power like UDING or something. I think everyone would love to see you do a dual wired freedom 3000w experiment. Thanks Bryan!
thank you for showing that. Im a 6'4" guy and see there is more clearance on the fenders - looks neat, I can see more mud clearance yeah I like real trails - lol if the ebike came this way? if there was the option for it? then I can see it would be something for me to try. for my wife [she is 5'6"] a inch would impress her more. a lower center of gravity "might" be nice om trails for me (?) maybe ;) and yeah another set of crank arms - just because,
Smaller diameter 24" wheel will be stronger & lighter than 26" wheel. I would be interested in a set if the rims can be swapped for double eyelet rims with cut-outs for reduced weight further. Likely more expensive, too. Another consideration, 24" wheels will reduce the ground clearance if the same frame is used. Not a big deal unless you're pedaling through the corners and the bike is leaned over.
They should offer that instead of two different frames, YES a wheel's diameter change is halved in seat height as the seat's change is according to radius but 1" helps. Better for some people that way but 8% lower gearing, better acceleration while sacrificing 3 or so MPH on the top end, a top end that most never use is another plus. You might lose a little range and depending the speedometer could read high.
If top speed does not change it could be the speedometer is reading wrong, that is, if they're using axial RPM but now your traveling 8% less. Use your phone's GPS. OR, the original gearing was too tall for your weight in where the lower gear pulled the same top end. However the lower gearing provides 8% more torque and it would get you there faster and hold speed better up hill. You could find a 150lb person to test the 26" wheel's top end. If they go faster you're weights too much for the bikes gear ratio. You would have to use your phone's GPS for speed and a stop watch on the 1/8 and 1/4 mile marks, 8% might not show up in the seat of your pants but it will on paper.
Nice work even if it doesn't pan out. An interesting question following your front wheel wobble tests, do smaller diameter wheels improve (or even increase) front wheel wobble? My guess is it will help. The moment of intertia is less with smaller diameter wheels (even if they weigh the same, even less if they weigh less). And if you get out of resonance frequency of your suspension, it might help when weight is on the back and friction on the front contact patch decreases. Keep it up!
Bryan, i think you should put a package together and a price.. then we can poll it in the different wired groups. A lot of people have said they wish their freedom was 1" shorter. That way we can gauge interest to see if its worth while. I don't need 24" but id love to put some vee speedsters on drop all the fenders and racks an see if it gives it a sportier feel.
I typed in tire size 16 on my display for my 26 inch wheel ebike and i got some extra speed out of it. You have to measure your speed on your phone GPS because it mucks up your display with the incorrect wheel size entered. Just an experiment I then set it back to manufacturers settings as that's fast enough anyway for me. No damage to anything afterwards, display working normally again.
I'm surprised you didn't go with smaller tires and rims TBH. I'm willing to bet it would have made a huge difference to ride feeling and torque actually. Those big tires are what makes the upgrade not that noticeable :P
i lowered gearing on front chain ring from 56, to 46, for lower end hill climbing in the SF East Bay Area, swapped out pedals to clip in for full crank rotation as I always like to pedal for battery conservation and the work out... I swapped out the handle bars to low rise MTB style for mor variation for shifting my weight around on technical terrain. Put a longer stem on it too.. Yesterday i put 5 inch "BEEFY" knobby tires on it for more off road fun and reconnaissance ... All set up for adventure and wilderness exploration!!! Mountain Lions Beware!!!! : )
pedal strike may be more of a problem. 1" lower could probably be had by a different seat. I agree with you, probably not enough of a benefit. So no difference in steering response at speed? As usual, great video, thanks!
Nice video! I don't know, maybe more interest in this than you think. Only 1" lower but for some that may be enough. Also would be applicable to the Ecells bike also I think. Interesting no noted speed difference. If you market this I would note the 1" reduction in pedal to ground clearance, which might not be an issue depending on riding style.
I'd expect the height to change by approximately 3 inches. 26in diameter to 20in diameter is a change of 6 in in diameter or 3 in radius. This means the axle height will drop by 3 inches adjusted by a difference in the tire height.
I have unrelated question. Do you have a video on how to attach a Himiway cargo trailer to a Himiway Cobra? The metal hitch to the back axle. Does it need an adapter? TIA
This is interesting. I have the Wired Freedom and I am on the short side. I sort of wish I had bought the Cruzer instead. However, I wanted the better suspension and didn't realize how large this e-bike actually is. I am still getting familiar with the bike. This might be a good solution to the height issue. (Assuming I am open to the expense and work involved).
May I ask who your manufacturer is so that I can try this? I want to try and convert my wired freedom to a regular size mountain bike tire not a fat tire.
Take the fenders and rack off that 24 and it would be way better. I have actually put my front fender on the rear of a couple bikes for that cool bobber look! You should try it on that 24. Then send it to me please!
@lostguy2023 the rear motors have a much wider Dropout. so you'll need to find a fork that can accommodate that 1500 watt motor. that's challenge number one
How about a 26 inch narrow wheel and tire like a road bike. It would have less rotational weight and less rolling resistance. I think you would notice a dramatic improvment in acceleration and better handling.
This might sound a little weird but I live on the 5th floor and there is an elevator that the bike needs to fit in.. Also if the elevator is out I need the bike to be able to climb stairs.. I know someone who has a 20 inch tire and they can't climb the stairs.. The only other thing it to get a little more torque for the mountains out here in Colorado..
Question! Replacing my front fender from my Freedom bike 2024 single battery with the new full one on the dual battery one, Would it work/fit? Getting chips on frame. Got mine in March 2024 front forks look the same as the updated 2024. Thanks
I would like you to do a 20 inch tire size change, I had contacted Wired and they could not do one, I would definitely buy a 20 inch wheel system from you.
If I remember correctly your wife was able to ride the first generation Freedom which surprised me because she’s around the same height as my wife. Did she ever get ride this one? Is it about the same height as the other one was at the stock height? I’d be curious to know what she thinks about this one as it is now.
she is able to get on the newer freedom but can only get her toes down, even with the 24in wheels it was still tall, i had her try it after the swap and didn't tell her, and she didn't even notice, still felt tall.
Hey Mr. Citizen C, I recently accidentally let my Wired Freedom bike fall over and the handle bar end cap got busted up. Can you suggest a replacement handle bar end cap? I also store my bike outside and even though it's covered, I still have a few bolts that has a slight rust. What's the best method to remedy this problem? I enjoy your video's and I'm a day one viewer 😊
That was looking good to me. I'm only 5"7 and was hoping it would lower it at least the 2 in difference. I have the cruiser with hard tail. I wish wired would come out with a smaller frame. I would have more options and could probably get the freedom model.
What's the price? after thinking about it and looking at the bike I'd like to try the 24" with slicks. I don't use fenders or racks so I think it would make the bike more nibble so yes interest I'm 6'2" 230 pounds so the big is fine the way it is but just a bit more flickable would be nice. Also I've wanted to upgrade my fork most good ones come with a thru axle so this kit would be perfect for my upgraded 2024 and my 2024+
I could use them. I am about 5'8 and I can touch the ground on my tip toes but not flat footed. I feel it would give me more sure footing when I am stopped. I almost bought an Ecells 5 star with 24 inch wheels which I probably. Should have.
@@CitizenCycle925 I’d be happy to go 50/50 on the deal with you, that’s how confident I am! The X-Class too would be a good one, I have both but not sure if the motor casing is the same size. At a glance, they appear to be the same size.
I think it is worth it, as long as you can buy it at the beginning with the 24" wheels. not worth the extra 300 to do it. but if you can order it like that for the same price. I would get that new cruiser with the 24" if they did it.
If you can make the 24-inch with a high-powered motor that might be a selling point as a kit were any bike out there 48 volt or 52 volt which is standard sizes a batteries high-powered kits that can be put on almost any bike 24 inch in the back will be nice because you do get 1 in lower that is a good option
Thanks for doing the experiment... now we know! Top speed is usually a few mph less than the motor's natural RPM per Volt rating, and since you you did improve the torque to the ground a bit, it allowed enough increase in RPM to get you back up to a similar top end. Good tip on using the nut to protect the axle threads. I remember when I went to do a motor swap after a group ride with Shreddie McSkate, and he said "Let's do a video", and we did it live with no prep time! Turned out pretty well though. By the way, you only need to grease the gear teeth 😉
Grease, How much is too much? Grease doesn't get consumed, BUT it will travel. Where it goes may not be a good thing. So when you go into a motor and you see grease but not clumps or deep spots "Is that enough" I can't see the manufacture being cheap and not putting enough it there. A new seemingly dry core, I can see adding some.... Just a common sense question.
Yeah it’s not really the same. I hope WIRED makes a smaller frame Bike 20 inch tire version. For me living in a city like NYC, a bike with a big frame and 26 inch tires is not practical for me.
I had a wire freedom ordered and got scared with the real wabble c*** I know it was silly so I ordered a seeker 24 save the $1000 just about as fast due motor been very happy with it so far 24 inch wheels. Put 5000 miles on a kbo ranger with no issues. Alot of Parts are the same on all these bikes. Why pay more?

Wouldn’t you end up with pretty bad pedal strike issues if you don’t put shorter crank arms on it as well?
This could be very true!
True if he pedaled, but he's anti pedaling, so what's the point of crank length
Round 14:00 you reminded me of Bill Burr heh, heh,😂😂❤

The delta in height is always half of what the new diameter of the wheel is.
I'd expect the height to change by approximately 3 inches. 26in diameter to 20in diameter is a change of 6 in in diameter or 3 in radius. This means the axle height will drop by 3 inches adjusted by a difference in the tire height.

That was looking good to me. I'm only 5"7 and was hoping it would lower it at least the 2 in difference. I have the cruiser with hard tail. I wish wired would come out with a smaller frame. I would have more options and could probably get the freedom model.
1 inch difference, the other inch is on top of the tire...
Lol 24 total diameter but 12 inch 24 vs 13 on 26. Gotta split the diameter in two.
I’d be more interested in getting mag wheels for my Grizzly. Tired of breaking spokes! Be great if you could get those.
And you could sell a ton of them as this is the biggest complaint on the Grizzly. I’d be happy to be your first customer, take my money!!!
@@andrewkemp2899 hmmm.. do you really think I can sell a lot of those? I'd probably have to sell at least 50 sets to make it worth Manufacturing
@@CitizenCycle925 I’d be happy to go 50/50 on the deal with you, that’s how confident I am! The X-Class too would be a good one, I have both but not sure if the motor casing is the same size. At a glance, they appear to be the same size.
Really don't think this is cost-effective at all . Always appreciate all of your experiments and vids !!!!!!!!!
i also change my wheel from 26 to 22 santa cruz v10
i have 26 wheels in a 24 inch frame.. nice combination if you are not that tall but still have bigger tires
I think it is worth it, as long as you can buy it at the beginning with the 24" wheels. not worth the extra 300 to do it. but if you can order it like that for the same price. I would get that new cruiser with the 24" if they did it.
I just got my wired e-bike but rear tire tube leaks. Now what?
Change the tube, put stop leak or slime.
Patch it man
Rubin Goldberg would be happy😂
If you can make the 24-inch with a high-powered motor that might be a selling point as a kit were any bike out there 48 volt or 52 volt which is standard sizes a batteries high-powered kits that can be put on almost any bike 24 inch in the back will be nice because you do get 1 in lower that is a good option
First 3 people I asked are in they want it! Me too😁
You should have done it with 20" wheels. That would have reduced the seat height 3 inches.
Great idea but no change is awkward
It could be good to have like 500 stamped on the motor case instead of 1500 😂
Thanks for doing the experiment... now we know!
I'd like it to be an inch shorter no one said ever, lol.
20”ers might sell!!!
Good example; respectfully, very excess stream of consciousness
I bet you get slightly longer battery life with a smaller wheel. Test it.
1 inch 300 dollars no
I am 5ft 6. I want do 24 wheel
If this change lowers the seat height by 1 inch then I am in......
Yeah it’s not really the same. I hope WIRED makes a smaller frame Bike 20 inch tire version. For me living in a city like NYC, a bike with a big frame and 26 inch tires is not practical for me.
sounds like a pain. I'd just remove the spokes and switch
since prob would do some customize anyways
You should let your wife test and compare. Shes shorter and would notice the differences as a advantage or not
I had a wire freedom ordered and got scared with the real wabble c*** I know it was silly so I ordered a seeker 24 save the $1000 just about as fast due motor been very happy with it so far 24 inch wheels. Put 5000 miles on a kbo ranger with no issues. Alot of Parts are the same on all these bikes. Why pay more?
The duel battery with 3" tire 4"fat tire is to big for me it's a deal breaker 4 " fat tires just to big and ugly
A lot of work for one inch of difference lol
Not much work at all really
