    I think that one reason that people are turned away from older anime is that most of it really does "look like shit" - not aesthetically or artistically, but in terms of pixel count. I recently found an official upload of a Space Cobra episode in 1080p and it looks phenomenal - there's no comparison to watching the same thing in what is the equivalent of 480i.
    There are no subtitles, but here's the link for anybody interested in checking it out:
    th-cam.com/video/n9T9DZo3zvA/w-d-xo.html
    Compare with what you can find on your standard anime streaming site. I dunno who owns the licence for Cobra, but most people wouldn't be using that anyways. Either the pirate site that they use doesn't have it, or the upload looks like a video recording of a CRT monitor.

      This one is strage though. Beacuse the first anime has a lot of annoying filler + an anime only ending. The second one doesnt start of where the first series left off but doesnt start from the beginning but has fantastic adittions. And as awesome as the manga is it lacks a lot of awesome filler from the anime. The anime is also very atmospheric

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jackthegreek6092 There's very little filler in comparison to other shoenens i have no idea where this idea came from. The issue is more so that there are a few recap eps here and there. Infact some of the filler in the later part of the series is the best there is, I really appreciated the weight it gave the death of a certain character which is absent in Ashita no Joe 2 in ways. (This is when Joe joins the wondering boxer group.)
      If anything i'd recommend skipping recaps and a couple minor character fillers , then stopping series 1 just before the fight with Carlos then moving straight into Ashita no Joe 2 while picking and choosing the recap-y eps before we get to the Carlos fight prep

    • @jackthegreek6092
      @jackthegreek6092 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stevem It's not about how much filler there is beacuse again a lot of it is awesome especially in 2. For me the problem is, a lot of it in 1 is the kind that simply drags the plot and naked it feel overly long.

      Well its a weak reason but a somewhat valid one.If someone doesn’t wanna spend hours watching something simply because it looks ugly then it kinda isn’t their fault.Media being visually appealing is a key factor of the visual experience and if they can’t get the most basic part right then I don’t blame the person for not wanting to experience it.

    Really appreciate the message Digi. A decent portion of my friends who watch anime struggle with going back to older entertainment because of the reasons you gave, and few times when I try to talk them through it they don't give a lot of thought to their reasoning and refuse to change. One of them has over a number of years of has been great with me forcing it upon them, but that was because they weren't a vervent or active watcher of anime. The other has fought back with a complacent gusto that just forces me to give up (your point about Yuasa was on point in this park. The most recent dismissal with them was about Ping Pong).
    I really wish there was more of a consistent outpour from the more public YT voices. I definitely commend Geoff trying to speak more often about this, even when he isnt as enthusiastic. Gigguk from what I can tell only did 2 videos (Im including the Mecha one) and the common conversation not being about "looking to the past" has me assuming others aren't either.

    Took the words right out of my mouth! Have you read Tezuka’s Black Jack, Digibro? I feel like you would love it, and I always felt that the numerous adaptations have horribly missed the mark for all the reasons you explained (including the children’s TV version, which keeps some of the style but utterly throws the surgeries and dark themes in the trash for fear of being ‘child unfriendly’).

    • @gunpuncher3817

      It makes me so angry, all the adaptations are trash. The TV anime is too damn soft, missing all the grit and grounded realism that balances all the weird ideas Tezuka had, and the OVA's are too dark and edgy, sacrificing all the energy and character that's like, the key constant in ALL of Tezuka's manga for that 80s Ultraviolence that was all the rage at the time. Art is its own closed ecosystem. It's best adapted as it was with the mindset it had, if you adapt it at all.

  • @Lifesizemortal

    Tezuka's work reminds me a lot of Jeff Smith's 'Bone' series from the 90s. He was massively influenced by old cartoons and comic strips from around the same time as Tezuka was producing, and it shows really clearly in his work. His human characters, monsters, and backgrounds look like a lot of its indie fantasy contemporaries, but the main characters are these bizarre white blob shapes that look like they should be in a Disney cartoon from the 30s right next to Mickey Mouse, and yet it just... works. All of it being done by the same hand just makes the lush, detailed backgrounds and mostly-realistic humans and animals mesh with the cartoony blobs of the Bone brothers effortlessly somehow. The comic feels more old-school than it actually is, but it's far, *far* better-looking for that fact.

    I think most of the time when people say they cant get into old anime/manga because the art is "bad", they mean it just doesnt appeal to them personally. While old artstyles obviously have legitimate artistic merit to them, its only natural for people in their teens and early 20s (who make up the majority of the weeb community) to prefer the newer art trends. I'm sure there are some young people who genuinely favor the old stuff, but most of us can still appreciate the early works for their unique and innovative designs even if it isn't our cup of tea.

    The reason so many people scoff at "older" material (art or just any media) as being "lame" and "inferior" is because we are brainwashed into joining the Church of Progress. As long as you believe that things always get better with time, and everything newer improves upon the old, you believe that old = bad. This is the reality of why people do not like old things.

    I think Dororo 2019 and Banana fish adaptations were kinda like a push towards older media showing that even manga which is written in 80s ( or older ) it can be still relevant , but sure they sacrifice their original style, but I think it was necessary in order to appeal masses. But I think a few people just because of these adaptations have picked up mangas or have watch original adaptations.
    P.S I know Banana fish wasn't adapted

    I feel like it's harder to get into a work unless you have an idea of what makes it worth experiencing, especially when you're older and your personal tastes have had time to develop. Speaking from my own experience, I've gone in 100% blind to any details about video games and anime in the past, and not uncommonly missed the appeal of the work, simply because I didn't know what to focus on. For this reason, I don't as often watch an older series unless I've tuned-in to an analysis or discussion that praises the work. Promotional materials (commercials, posters, etc.) have always given people an idea what to expect from recently released works, but older works need to rely much more heavily on word-of-mouth (such as this video) for someone to understand the appeal.

    It was really interesting to me how at the end of the video you referred to your proposed anime adaption as a "literal" interpretation of the manga. I did not imagine that the word could be used in such a useful way, where it actually refers to the art style instead of the themes or message of the work.

    You know Digi, what you described there at the end is my exact fear every time a manga I read is announced for an anime adaptation, that the anime simply won’t be able to properly translate or capture the appeal of the manga’s aesthetic, and ruining it with CGI such as in the case of Houseki no Kuni (Although I’ll admit I still enjoyed the show after I got over my initial baby rage), and my current fear being the newly announced Dorohedero show. No way to solve that though I suppose, thanks for the video Digi!

      W A. Well I grew to love it for the advantages of the 3-d camera and it’s unique aesthetic, but it was disappointing in the beginning when I realized that they wouldn’t be using the amazing artwork of the manga. I suppose a better example of failed adaptations would be something like Blade of the Immortal or Berserk 2016-2017

      Hard agree, the story was genuinely interesting for the first half of the manga but after a while it became a series of monster-of-the-week encounters and this never-ending cycle of impasses with the general. Definitely feels like Tezuka was aiming for a much bigger story at the start but just lost interest in it.

      Goldfinger is an awesome movie, go check it out. It fulfills your basic criteria while also being the kind of film that, if it was remade, you would imagine would not need a huge amount of updating besides the obvious things like cars, time period, and some locales. Other things like the gadgets bond uses really wouldn't need updates because the uses they have are simple, multi-lateral, and are still cool (The ejector seat, the oil slicks, the rotating license plates, and the armor plating on the Aston Martin in the film are simple yet practical. There's a reason all future Bond cars tried to top this one, and there's a reason almost all of them failed!).

    You’re basically making the same point with the same reasoning that the fellows in academia make about shit like Homer and Shakespeare, except with manga and anime.
    No really it’s just about the same reasoning - classic shit is classic because it’s good and you can observe how they influenced future art.

      He's just analyzing it, and its stuff that can and should be analyzed. Wish more people read japanese animation/manga like digi because it deffinatly has that value. And that's why i read it. I literally read manga every night after work and its not absentmindly. I'm probably not as articulate about these stories/art as digi but i have thoughts going through my mind and anything that inspires thought is worth this level of analysis. Also considering Shakespeare is not up to date really manga currently warrants more analysis than even these classics because more manga comes out everyday.
      I personally think we are in a golden age of thought and literature and its not getting enough recognition

    • @amirbutcher2147

      drayggenn draygenn I can’t argue with you on the merits of Shakespeare or the merits of modern Manga. But I do know people who can, and having read their work, I believe both are worth consuming for the same broad reasons manifesting differently in either artistic medium.
      You are quite dismissive of old literature, particularly Shakespeare, and again I can’t immediately analyze its merits I do know you will incur the wrath of many, many people who will proclaim the value of these works.
      All I ask is, like old manga, you give them a chance.
