My mother has a classic black wool coat she bout in 1963 as a long overcoat, about 20 years ago, she had it cut down into a “car coat”. It still looks beautiful and classic every wearing.

Hi Kay. I have a classic trench Mac my mum bought me when I started my working life at 18. I'm 60 now and still have it and wear it every spring/autumn. I have only had to have it cleaned once in all these years and the only time I didn't wear it was when I was pregnant!!😄

I have thrifted (and love wearing) classic pieces (especially jackets) that others have decluttered/disposed of. The tailoring on many of these is amazing and I'm blown away by the quality garments people dispose of. I like to update my "finds" with a contemporary twist, eg, a graphic tee or sleeveless hoodie worn underneath a jacket, a trendy trainer, bootie or sneakers, to create a "signature" outfit all my own! At 71, I love fashion, follow trends although adopt only those that work for my height, shape and colorway. The key is the pivotal pieces are already in my wardrobe. A great video! Thank you.

Hi, I find with the current trend for minimalism and decluttering, nobody admits that they regret getting rid of things. I have definitely not only regretted some, I have been unable to replace them, so this is a very helpful lesson

I save my classic style, good-quality leather footwear, belts and bags. Last fall when chunky boots came back in, I had lots of great options of those already (I really never stopped buying them altogether). No one can tell that they’re from the 2000s, as you recommend, they don’t have dateable details. They are also broken in, super-comfy, and free.

I have lots of cashmere from when I lived in Hong Kong. Also a custom made mid nite blue cashmere coat and some blazers. They still bring me lots of joy. My sisters-in-law gave me Hermès scarfs for Christmas and I have Dior one. All of them are at least 20 years old. My point is that amortized over the many years I have worn them they are better than fast fashion!,,

Hi Kay, Thanks for sharing these ideas for classics! If a garment has been downgraded to gardening clothes and is then not usable, we cut up the cotton items for rags. In a home with 8 people, we do a lot of cleaning and repairing of everything; if a rag won't work for home cleaning, my husband uses it in the garage and tosses it. Also, wool sweaters can be taken apart and made into dryer balls. All the best, Julie

Great to hear! I too reuse the stained and ragged clothes from our family. When they were small our sons would say”oh, mom I liked that dress” so, I started saving the sturdy parts, and reusing the rest for rags. A sweater was remade into a hat. Cotton dresses were remade into everyday napkins. And some favorite plaid shirts became flannel scarves. We wear natural fibers and find it easier to repurpose those items. Sturdy things go to the thrift store!

This was so fun! I think as women of a certain age we need to dress beautifully and feel our best. We are constantly bombarded with a beauty industry and social media that tell us we are not enough or not beautiful, especially as we age! Don’t wrinkle, inject and cut and dress like your 20!! This is so far from the truth! We are more amazing and more fabulous as we age and we as women need to love ourselves! I teach Wabi sabi embracing the imperfections of life in ourselves and aging a beautiful gift!
Thank you for reminding us how to be fabulous. Blessings to you and everyone here 🙌🏻🍑🧡Lisa

I agree! Simple, classic styles in natural fibers or materials (like leather) have the greatest value and longevity in the wardrobe. If you decide that they’re not working anymore, they still have intrinsic value to others for rewear or at least recycling, unlike cheap synthetic-fiber clothes and plastic shoes. I won’t buy these things that have no intrinsic value, but actually cost money to be disposed of in landfills, then won’t biodegrade tor thousands of years or end up polluting our oceans. As an Environmental Scientist and fashion consumer, I think we should all try to reverse the trend of the increasing use of these plastics, they are so damaging to the environment. If we just don’t buy them, manufacturers will be forced to offer better options. Finally, synthetic fibers and other plastics are just miserable to wear, they’re made of petrochemicals, which we should reserve for the critical use needs of future generations. They won’t thank us for gobbling up all the fossil fuels and polluting the world, we must improve.

    INK STAINS
Kay, I know this is an older video so I hope you see this comment.
My husband is retired from the hospital laundry industry. His biggest dilemma was getting the ink stains out of the Doctors lab coats. He heard about this trick - spraying the stain heavily with hairspray and blotting with a dry “old” towel then repeating & repeating until the stain was gone.
I don’t know if hairspray (Aquanet) is still formulated with as high an alcohol content as it once was, but it worked then.

Particularly appreciated the point about true classic being pared down, versus the same type of garment with "bells & whistles." Color longevity can be influenced by one's own coloring, or "season." As a formerly high contrast Winter, but now with graying hair, bright pink remains a classic color for me.😊 Thanks for this interesting & thought provoking discussion!

All good advice. If we shop paired down classic pieces we can keep them for decades. I really don't like buying trendy pieces because they only end up in landfills or cluttering up thrift store racks. I keep all of my nice leather purses, sandals, and shoes too. Regarding classic strands of pearls, male celebrities are wearing them. I will always wear mine with dressy outfits when we go out to a wedding or nice dinner and even with jeans and a blouse. I agree....never get rid of pearls or silk scarves.

I was horrified by your story of your white skirt. That was such a unique skirt! Sometimes you just have to let things go. I was wearing a unique white skirt and blouse set that I really liked, but hadn’t spent much on. One Sunday we were having communion at church, and the person in front of me was having trouble getting the cup out of the tray, and instead of choosing a different cup, he forced it out and the grape juice went all over my white outfit! So I do sympathize. I just got rid of a sweater that my husband had gotten me maybe 25-30 years ago. It just looked horrible on me because it was a tunic length and I am only 5’1”. Sometimes you just have to let things go. Thank you for your tips, today and always.

Wow great advice! Give me some things to think about. One of the things I've learned to do is to buy multiples of the same garment if it's flattering, material will be long-lasting, comfortable, an affordable price. For instance a square cut neckline is currently popular but it will soon be out of style but it is very flattering to my upper body and face shape. I won't be able to find it in store soon enough, so I'm buying them in different colors, weights, and fabrics to try to last a long time.

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Me, too! It's rather uncommon for me to find a garment that ticks all of the boxes, so when I do, I buy as many as I can. Sometimes I buy several duplicates in the same neutral color, too, because I know from experience that I may not find that perfect item again for years and years. Shoes, the same. I'm a difficult fit, so when I find a perfect pair, I'll buy several pairs in different colors.

This is one of your best videos ever! I would love it if you linked natural-fiber options for us to buy, perhaps in a sub-list, or show the fabric content in the description box. If it’s synthetic, I don’t bother to look at an item. Another disturbing thing I learned about modern textiles last year is that even a small percentage of a synthetic fiber in them, like the ubiquitous 5% Spandex in most knits, disqualifies them for recycling. Then, when biodegrading, the synthetic leaves a “web” that won’t break down. This makes shopping for natural-fiber clothing and shoes a lot more difficult (leather shoes usually have some plastic in the soles, so I look for all-leather or natural rubber soles. Natural rubber is a plant material that biodegrades.)

Your tips on classic clothing really resonate with me since I sew most of my wardrobe now, I struggle to sew classic stuff. I am learning to sew with natural fibers, which are hard to find in basic clean colors and in a nice variety of worthy fabrics. I also have a very hard time tossing things that I designed and sewed when they don't work with my wardrobe. And some of them, I want to wear, but they are just not what I originally envisioned and don't seem to ever have the right occasion for.
Designing and sewing my own clothing has really helped me to be able to create cohesive clothing in colors that coordinate and go with most of my wardrobe. I have also learned how to choose clothing that flatters my shape and lifestyle. I own a great deal to women such as yourself who work on these issues and share what you learn. Thanks so much for all this great information and insight on dressing after a certain age.

A little girl at church just came to me and started drawing on my skirt with an ink pen. I was grateful that the print was so complex, and dark, that it would be hard to tell, so I was more astonished than upset. I was practically frozen in place at the time because I didn't know what to do! Her parents were just visiting from out of town so I didn't know them.

Can you comment on vintage brooches, lapel pins, or rhinestone statement necklaces? Vintage satin or velvet clutch evening bags?

Vintage is always in style, just check how high fashion is doing jewelry and imitate with your vintage jewelry

A vintage brooch or pin on an otherwise “basic” jacket or coat (not leather, obviously!) will elevate your look immediately. Ditto other vintage pieces. It will draw interest as it is an unusual but very chic accessory. It reflects a sense of style, not just fashion. And it can be a great conversation piece, especially if “vintage” means “a family story.”.

Pretty sure everything in my closet should go. My problem is my weight has fluctuated over the year so much. I got rid of my larger size clothes a few years back thinking I’d never gain the weight back and guess what I DID!!

😉I feel you. Found it far easier to lose weight than keep it off. It's a struggle not to fall back into bad habits😖, & use the 🍟wrong food🍕as comfort as well as protection.
😁When I lost a huge amount of weight, I was never more thrilled I kept garments from the 90s that had swung back around in fashion. Or, from the 2ks, when I gained some back.
😃 I've reduced again 🎢, & trying to keep it off. 💲I couldn't have afforded to easily replace the quality of my wardrobe〰️& am thankful I kept classics. ✂️Been turning my energy toward styling hacks, 🪡 upcycling, & tailoring my own garments using current inspo. ❤️Love using creativity over consumption, being less wasteful, & more sustainably minded 🌎. 🍀God bless you on your journey.

I wonder about hats and other accessories..... I have loved linen pants and dresses and shirts for years.... I didn’t wear blue jeans and T-shirts in the winter with a nice blazer or a lovely jacket... in the summer I wear linen dresses etc.... I have lots of clothes that are 20 years old or older including hats... all kinds of hats closures brimmed hats etc... sometimes I wonder how long to keep the hat..... it would be nice if you would talk about accessories thank you for your blog

Dearest Kay, thank you, so much, for this beautiful video. It is so helpful.
U took me back in time, my sister, God rest her soul in peace, was a dress designer, and she used to dress me up.
She had tricks, with cuts and hid my flows, but I did get rid of somethings she made me, especially silk outfits, and I do regret it, for my daughters remind my, of why? Or how could u.
God bless you, for all u do and thanks again. 🙏🥰❤️👏👍🌹🌟✝️

WOW. I so admire that you have a piece of clothing that you can still wear after 30 years. I wish I could say the same, but hormonal weight gain has taken over :)

Thanks for a very informative video. You are correct in highlighting the natural fabrics! (especially recommended from those of us that are menopausal) They last much longer than the "fast fashion" fabrics. I have navy linen blouse from Laura Ashley, that I purchased in 2015 and it still looks as if I bought it last week! Also I agree about the denim jackets. I don`t like wearing cardigans - they just look frumpy on me. I have a few dark denim and a mid denim, that I wear instead of cardigans. Having said that, I have a lovely alpaca cardigan from German brand Olsen, but I wear it as a jumper.

What are your thoughts on colored denim? I have a pair of high-waisted skinny burgundy jeans, and mid-rise slim straight dark green jeans. I really like to incorporate color into my outfits, and these jeans do the trick! I am currently seeing more colored pants, though, and am trying to keep my wardrobe looking current. Thanks.

How do you know if a dress is out of style? I’m not very classic, have tons of paisley and prints bc I was in a creative industry. Now I’m mostly retired. Are we only wearing only solids these days? Thanks. Love your videos.

    • @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms
      @DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms  ปีที่แล้ว

Solids do hold their style longer than prints. But prints are definitely in. I'd say reach for the ones with bold colors right now. And if you want to wear your prints and aren't sure if they are "in style," just make sure you wear modern shoes with them.

How can you have a functional wardrobe if your size changes frequently? Like a 10 to a 16 in back to a 12 then up to a 2x , in 1 or 2 years.
