India did not wish to intervene in 1971, it was Pakistan’s aggression, violation of international border, and attack on us led to a full scale war, which ended into separation of Pakistan. Even today, we are not bothered if Balochistan breaks away, it doesn’t affect our borders, we don’t care if Bangladesh goes into anarchy, why should we bother, if we face aggression from any of our neighbours, we have a duty to defend our borders. It was political pressure, and purely internal politics, which tricked relatives of passengers, indulging into widespread demonstrations, supported by opposition, ultimately government buckling under pressure to release the terrorists, finally, those terrorists are now enjoying their lives in Pakistan.
Yes we Indians are not your enemy. We want you to prosper and grow with us together. We would love to see you develop like UAE or Qatar. Just focus on education and deradicalisation. Focus on women empowerment and technology. Focus on co operation and trade. Come up dear friend....prosper and shine together. Let's conquer the world with peace and prosperity. It's tempting to conclude that Vajpayee's outreach to Pakistan was a failure- which was first paid back by Kargil, 2001 Parliament attack,, and later by the commuter train bombings in Mumbai and the big one-26/11. I have to say though- that the outreach was needed, and resulted in a long term (25 year )strategic victory. In the long term- India was seen by the world in clear terms as a victim of terrorism, and Pakistan as the perpetrator. 1999 was the crucial tipping point where Pakistan-India strategic parity started to break away- with India eventually gaining complete dominance in 2023, and Pakistan seeing total disaster and irrelevance. The Vajpayee experiment has shaped India's now decisive and muscular foreign policy of retaliation, and negotiation (Even with enemies) from a position of strength- the Modi- Jaishankar era.
