I remember something another person said about Sega and their business practices. Sega of Japan is ran by boomers who haven’t the foggiest clue what is really needed to properly finish a game. With Sega’s Sonic games, the deadlines are immovable and the developers working on any given Sonic game aren’t informed about console exclusivity deals until damn near last minute. This is a problem bc Nintendo consoles are notoriously underpowered hardware. This is what happened to Sonic 06, the storybook games, and to Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

23:05 fun fact, in most modelling software - for example: Blender, 3DS Max, and Maya, they all contain a smoothing algorithm where a model is automatically smoothed out. while hard edges need some work to keep them sharp, it would have likely been very easy to take the Wii model and simply sub-devide it into a smother model, possibly without having to change texture maps even. Work like that could easily be done within a matter of hours at most. as for textures... I mean, it's fairly flat shaded, so...
1:42 this right here It's one of the sole reasons that I love the kirby, fire emblem, mario, xenoblade and Zelda games Yes they have bugs But they don't stop you from enjoying a game. They only release the game when it's ready. They get quality of life patches later down the line, or smaller bugs that people found out. They don't rush a game out. Xenoblade 2 had half of the team working on a totally different game, it was their first time making a game for the switch, and it still turned out great. I thought about this. If this game wanted to be Ultimate, the DS port would also be remade, except the Wisp minigames at the start of each world which needed the touchscreen. It would be nice for people, like me, who grew up with it to have a remake
porting a game is not just how powerful the console is but also its system architecture. the ps3 is a good example of this despite being more powerful than the xb360 the ports and multi plats were worse cause the cell was harder to use and with out using it the ps3 was weaker. better is not the main thing for porting, similar is, a similar console with enough power is easier than a more powerful console thats completely different.

TY Radicalsoda for making this cool and funny review, as awful of a port Sonic colours ultimate is, I still had a fun time cause colours was the first sonic game I ever played and gives me so much nostalgia, that and some of the stuff that isn’t liked is stuff I don’t find bad that and I was real lucky with the glitches and bugs, as I didn’t run into a lot of them, that and I thought the game looked fine and enjoyed the remixed soundtrack. Anyways this is definitely one of my favourites that you have done. Despite how sad you must have felt cause u never wanted to complain about sonic, glad sonic frontiers is looking better and better and is just generally looking real good and fun to play. Before and as I was watching these reviews and still now my mental health has been getting worse and worse but despite that I was having a big laugh and good time watching your vids like always, so TY.
AND now this is what Colors on other consoles will always look like. Also the "original" music option they added doesn't change Terminal Velocity or the final battle's theme back, it just removes the new remixes in the other worlds that replaced repeat tracks. Thanks SEGA
Something I really like about the fact that radicalsoda reviews games regardless of it they got updates is the fact that it’s a review for EVERYONE. Because there are people who buy games and don’t have access to the internet, so they can’t update games. Or they don’t have the storage. Or they don’t have an account on the console rhey’re playing on so they can’t update anything! I literally was in that exact position for years when I was younger. I played Minecraft in what I’m pretty sure was 1.3 for YEARS because I couldn’t update my game until I was about 10, and I’d been playing Minecraft since I was 7 (obviously Minecraft is a sandbox game that’s always updating, but you get my point). I really appreciate that RS reviews games this way because of these reasons. It means everyone gets an equal review of the game, regardless of their situation. It also, as he pretty much says, puts into perspective how lazy game devs are becoming these days.

i'll never be able to forgive Colours Ultimate for how much it fucked up people's perceptions of the original game. The fandom is already starting to view Colours in a less positive light (which i completely get with how the levels are split into 6 acts for seemingly no reason, the overabundance of 2d and the story/writing), but i still think the original release of Colours is still one of Sonic's better outings. If Ultimate is the only perception or opinion you have on the game, then please give the original Wii (and DS!) version(s) a chance, it definitely has its shortcomings but it's still a great Sonic game.

You're my favorite reviewer and this video sums up why perfectly. I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of reviewing games in their originally released state, and I think that calling out every glitch is valid criticism. People buy these games with their hard-earned money, and releasing them in a state like this is like being spit in the face by the publishers. It's disgusting and _needs_ to be called out.
my favorite RadicalSoda bit is when he interjects with "hi radical soda here..." and usually you'd expect him to correct himself, but instead he goes into what terrible detail about the game he missed at the time of recording. classic
The very sad thing about Sonic Colors is that the superior version in gameplay isn't even the big Wii one, but the DS version, which had a different story, 3 main stages per area with 3 side quests, and some pretty good and different Bosses Wisps on the DS are unlocked one by one as you enter an area for the first time, having to catch them midway through their movement as they move around in a way simillar to the power they give you - except the Purple Void, which teleports around in its minigame And the sidequests are actually pretty neat, having some extra character as well as featuring friends and foes from several of the previous games as well, with things such as a race against Shadow or Omega, a Ring Hunt for Rouge and whatnot, it's kinda neat That, and if you finish all 3 levels in an area and complete all 3 missions the area's visuals change to the "Saved Area" mode, with all the fanfare going and a full arrangement of the zone's music Oh, and Bosses, in the DS there's a way to kill it normally, and a way to kill it faster in a Cool way by dealing damage to the boss with the Boost first, and then using the special Color Wisp you get from that not just at the right time, but also in the right way! With no bosses repeating it leads to some good stuff, like Rocketting the shit out of the Starlight Carnival boss and just going Straight through the bastard; or devouring the Asteroid Coaster boss with the ever growing Purple Void, starting with a few pieces and rings and then growing enough to just to devour rings by the hundreds, eating the trailer's compartments and eventually eating even the main ship's hood! Letting you deal extra damage and have a look at the fully animated engine under it for example! In shorts: Sonic Colors for the DS is just, the Superior Game

I'm by no means defending how this released, but, honestly it feels misplaced to shit on developers when it's come to light how badly Sega treats those developing under them. ''Didn't have enough time'' is not an excuse for Sega, as they repeatedly refuse to allow for reasonable delays (see: Sonic 06, Sonic Boom develpomental complications), but it is entirely an excuse for the developers who are likely far from lazy - rather overworked and unfairly treated by both Sega and rightfully angry consumers.
RadicalSoda, these are all really minor issues, you know? Music being wrong, sound effects cutting out, graphical glitches, Sonic not running right. All of these things are pretty small and they don’t affect the gameplay, and that’s what’s important. Decapitated Sonic.
Thanks for putting this out, I was getting excited for Frontiers again and I'm glad I have a reminder to expect shit again cause it's sega and you cannot trust them.
That is honestly sad considering how the interview from tgs shows how serious sonic team is taking frontiers like they legit wanna make a good game especially since in the interview it mentions izuka had to make sure uppermanagment didn't make the game release early since they weren't happy it wasn't done yet
I hate this thing, 10 years and THIS was our shot at having Colors in modern platforms. They completely fucked it up and now who knows if we'll ever get a chance to play a decent version of this game, other than the original.
Really helps put Sonic 06 into perspective for me. Sonic 06 suffered through so much development hell as a game being built from scratch, such as: - A ridiculous deadline to meet console release - Internal fighting leading to Yuji Naka leaving part way through the development - The team being split in half to create a Wii version for the coming Wii console (which was transformed into Secret Rings, resulting in being both a cause and a symptom of Sonic 06’s failure) - Having to ignore QA testers to meet said deadline Meanwhile, Colours Ultimate is a “remaster” of a Wii game that was outsourced to a third-party developer. 1. They should’ve learnt their lesson with Rise of Lyric that outsourcing to other studios can cause ENORMOUS problems 2. They were so confident in this release and yet had no hand in it. You can see they were confident as they made the mini-series to go with it. 3. This should have been a slam dunk of a rerelease. It wasn’t like they were remastering a large game like Sonic 06 or Unleashed, or an old game that they’d need to rebuild almost completely like the Genesis mobile remasters, it was fucking Sonic Colours.
"Game: Sonic Forces" No, it's better than that... Technically, but also... Not technically I dunno, I feel like a buggy game that's fun to play is more enjoyable than a slightly less buggy game that's not really that fun to play (not to mention still buggy, somehow during my playthrough I clipped through the ceiling during one of the loops with Classic Sonic) EDIT: Since writing this the game category got changed to Frontiers, which I can definitely say is better than this

Replace "Devs" with "Publishers" and I'll agree. They're the ones who call the shots and decide when and what games get published.

my favorite RadicalSoda bit is when he interjects with "hi radical soda here..." and usually you'd expect him to correct himself, but instead he goes into what terrible detail about the game he missed at the time of recording. classic
The very sad thing about Sonic Colors is that the superior version in gameplay isn't even the big Wii one, but the DS version, which had a different story, 3 main stages per area with 3 side quests, and some pretty good and different Bosses
Wisps on the DS are unlocked one by one as you enter an area for the first time, having to catch them midway through their movement as they move around in a way simillar to the power they give you - except the Purple Void, which teleports around in its minigame
And the sidequests are actually pretty neat, having some extra character as well as featuring friends and foes from several of the previous games as well, with things such as a race against Shadow or Omega, a Ring Hunt for Rouge and whatnot, it's kinda neat
That, and if you finish all 3 levels in an area and complete all 3 missions the area's visuals change to the "Saved Area" mode, with all the fanfare going and a full arrangement of the zone's music
Oh, and Bosses, in the DS there's a way to kill it normally, and a way to kill it faster in a Cool way by dealing damage to the boss with the Boost first, and then using the special Color Wisp you get from that not just at the right time, but also in the right way!

Really helps put Sonic 06 into perspective for me. Sonic 06 suffered through so much development hell as a game being built from scratch, such as:
- A ridiculous deadline to meet console release
- Internal fighting leading to Yuji Naka leaving part way through the development
- The team being split in half to create a Wii version for the coming Wii console (which was transformed into Secret Rings, resulting in being both a cause and a symptom of Sonic 06’s failure)
- Having to ignore QA testers to meet said deadline
Meanwhile, Colours Ultimate is a “remaster” of a Wii game that was outsourced to a third-party developer.
1. They should’ve learnt their lesson with Rise of Lyric that outsourcing to other studios can cause ENORMOUS problems
"Game: Sonic Forces"
No, it's better than that... Technically, but also... Not technically
I dunno, I feel like a buggy game that's fun to play is more enjoyable than a slightly less buggy game that's not really that fun to play (not to mention still buggy, somehow during my playthrough I clipped through the ceiling during one of the loops with Classic Sonic)
