My father-in-law was a classically trained baritone who had a beautiful voice. His favorite tenor was Franco Corelli. I've been listening to Corelli for almost fifty years now thanks to Robert. And yet, each time I hear him sing since my father-in-law passed away, I still well up. The true sign of great classical music is in its ability to endure, and get better as the years and decades and centuries go by. It stands up to the true test of time.
I can relate, James. My father was a tenor, and we both loved how Corelli sang this aria.....how he holds this note. I bawl my eyes out every damn time because it reminds me so much of my father and how much I miss him so.
The Franco Corelli diminuendo transition to a mezza voce pianissimo and long sustain at 1:52-2:03 is breathtaking and heart wrenching. Also, (and I’ll struggle to describe these effects if someone can explain better, please do) Corelli’s final emotional appoggiare (to lean upon) at the end where he slightly rises the pitch up and down mid-note, an embellishment in the “veee” of la vita”, is genuinely effective, that is, not over-emotive. This sharp inflection expressing emotion, a crying out of the “vi” in “la vi-ta” seems to be an improvisation that was also used in the early effusive style of opera, in recordings of this aria of Schipa and Gigli. In the recording of the rare 1955 stage performance footage of E Lucevan Le Stelle Corelli rises the pitch beautifully sharp a little earlier at the end of “tanto- O-LA VI-to!” In the equally spectacular 1956 live performance on stage he does not use this embellishment. Instead, he ends the note, pauses and sobs (effectively). I rather missed the improvisation, but his voice is pure Heaven.

my grandma grew up in his town, they used to be neighbors (though she was a few years younger than him) and she told me he basically rose to fame through a contest his friends signed him up to as a joke! he won and that's how his career started.. so it's so weird and cool to see comments about how he was the best tenor and this and that when my grandma tells me about how he used to play with her when she was a kid :)

Sono anche due voci leggermente diverse: Del Monaco era più scuro di Corelli! Non si possono paragonare, sono stati due giganti.
