The opera-business here in Austria in the summertime, there are plenty of summer-festivals, now AIDA and it is really a spettacolo as I saw an advertisement about this event. The Vienna State Opera Public recruiting to 80% of tourists, mostly from the far East. Now coming back to old singing. This kind of opera will never more happen. Maybe some fans in the future generations? I would guess very limited. As long I am living, I know one fan of Franco Corelli and Renata Tebaldi exists at least in Austria. Que lástima que no existía el sonido digital en su mejor época, un tenor grandioso, a pesar de lo limitado de la tecnología de ésta grabación se siente que tenía una voz absolutamente magnífica, poderosa, metálica, colorida, cantaba cada silaba con una pronunciación excelente, el solo hubiera opacado hasta a los 3 tenores.
Actually, the best opera recordings technically were made from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. Digital recordings were a step down from analog tape. Having said that, I don’t know how this was recorded. It looks dubbed, but I’m not sure. BTW, I heard Corelli on his farewell tour with Tebaldi, and they both had huge voices.

Corelli had a few roles that even today remain in his domain alone. CHENIER was one & here he has a fine partner in Celestina Casapietra, a former student of Gina Cigna, who seldom, as far as I know, ever sang in the states. This performance was recorded fairly late (1973?) & Corelli is still in optimum form. Physically & vocally he was absolutely ideal in this role. Bonisolli had already arrived on the scene & was considerable competition but his primary advantage was his total lack of nerves. His upper range was even a bit more extensive but overall tonal beauty & sensitivity were still, I feel, on a lower level than Corelli. How interesting that both died within a day of each other!

My all time"dream team" for this magnificent opera would be the burnished voices of Corelli,Scotto and Bastiannini ;I know that it would have pushed Miss Scotto to her vocal limits however her total musical /acting conviction inspired by her two magnificent colleagues and maybe conducted by Maestro Gavazzini,or Maestro Cillario, would have been a TOTAL ITALIAN operatic triumph!.........,one can only dream!!! The recording with Domingo,Scotto and Milnes conducted by Maestro Levine is the best of the modern enregistments ;they all sing outstandingly and one can "feel" Miss Scotto's TOTAL absorption of her role as "Maddalena de Coigny".May she rest in Peace with all her illustrious colleagues.

Corelli is here a little past his prime. The great voice is slightly slower, the vibrato wider, than during days of yore. But even at his worst, Corelli is easily superior to any tenor attempting his roles today. We have no contemporary Chenier, Radames, Calaf, Johnson, Jose, Manrico, Cavarradossi of this quality today. How I wish Corelli had sung "Otello" and "Manon Lescaut." Also Samson. And perhaps Aeneas in "Les Troyens." Maybe even Lohengrin, which Corelli said he wanted to sing during his interview for "The Tenors." I believe he could have been a great Tannhauser as well. But Corelli's success or lack thereof in these Wagner roles would have depended on whether he could have developed sufficient dominion over German.
Del Monaco era Chenier: a tutto tondo. Chiunque capisce che Corelli ha studiato su di lui. Anche nell'enfasi calata negli stessi punti. Ma Mario è superiore.
Ineguagliabile ! Faccio battaglia tra lui,Mario Lanza,Gigli,Pavarotti e Jussi Bjorling.....Una Eleganza scenica fenomenale innata. Si può dire però che se viveva in questi anni poteva godere di un Successo da Star come lo Era. Oggi sono attratto solo da Jonas kauffman.........certo non ha la potenza di Corelli ma sta imparando in fretta.
Cosa c'entrano Lanza tenore cinematografico Kaufmann l'orco ingolato e Paverotto con Corelli? Corelli era di un altro livello, cosi come lo era Mario del Monaco.
These Corelli films could have been so great, but bad lip synching nearly ruins them. Better than nothing, but an actual live performance would be to die for. This is only worth being badly hurt!
Always a tremendous voice, usually lacking refinement, this was his signature role above any other. Here the voice decline had already started, he retired only three years later (in 1976) after an intense 25-year career.
@@garygreen3845 Refined against what? This is a role for a spinto tenor. He was not a leggero or lyric tenor, where refinement is more important. He was a dramatic spinto, that is not the most refined category of tenors, it is more about having raw emotional power and impact. Yet his version of this aria is very refined, compared to Del Monaco for example, or Tucker who was never as refined as Corelli and Del Monaco. For a spinto dramatic tenor he was very refined.
IMO, Franco Corelli was the greatest opera tenor that there ever was. We will never see another with the talent that this man had.

I saw him in Chenier with Tebaldi and got their autographs. Also saw him in Fanciulla and Tosca. Fantastic voice that covered the entire theatre.

Per chi non comprende il testo: Un dì all'azzurro spazio guardai profondo e ai prati colmi di viole, pioveva l'oro il sole e folgorava d'oro il mondo: parea la terra un immane tesor e a lei serviva di scrigno il firmamento. Corelli is here a little past his prime. The great voice is slightly slower, the vibrato wider, than during days of yore.
But even at his worst, Corelli is easily superior to any tenor attempting his roles today.
We have no contemporary Chenier, Radames, Calaf, Johnson, Jose, Manrico, Cavarradossi of this quality today.
How I wish Corelli had sung "Otello" and "Manon Lescaut." Also Samson.
And perhaps Aeneas in "Les Troyens."
Maybe even Lohengrin, which Corelli said he wanted to sing during his interview for "The Tenors."
I believe he could have been a great Tannhauser as well.
But Corelli's success or lack thereof in these Wagner roles would have depended on whether he could have developed sufficient dominion over German.
Was an earlier tape dubbed here? He looks a lot older than he sounds.
Corelli era Chenier
Del Monaco era Chenier: a tutto tondo. Chiunque capisce che Corelli ha studiato su di lui. Anche nell'enfasi calata negli stessi punti. Ma Mario è superiore.
Ineguagliabile ! Faccio battaglia tra lui,Mario Lanza,Gigli,Pavarotti e Jussi Bjorling.....Una Eleganza scenica fenomenale innata. Si può dire però che se viveva in questi anni poteva godere di un Successo da Star come lo Era.
Oggi sono attratto solo da Jonas kauffman.........certo non ha la potenza di Corelli ma sta imparando in fretta.
Cosa c'entrano Lanza tenore cinematografico Kaufmann l'orco ingolato e Paverotto con Corelli? Corelli era di un altro livello, cosi come lo era Mario del Monaco.
These Corelli films could have been so great, but bad lip synching nearly ruins them. Better than nothing, but an actual live performance would be to die for. This is only worth being badly hurt!
Always a tremendous voice, usually lacking refinement, this was his signature role above any other. Here the voice decline had already started, he retired only three years later (in 1976) after an intense 25-year career.
You spoke the word I couldn't put my finger on: refinement. I never really warmed up to his singing.
@@garygreen3845 Refined against what? This is a role for a spinto tenor. He was not a leggero or lyric tenor, where refinement is more important. He was a dramatic spinto, that is not the most refined category of tenors, it is more about having raw emotional power and impact. Yet his version of this aria is very refined, compared to Del Monaco for example, or Tucker who was never as refined as Corelli and Del Monaco. For a spinto dramatic tenor he was very refined.
