The opera-business here in Austria in the summertime, there are plenty of summer-festivals, now AIDA and it is really a spettacolo as I saw an advertisement about this event. The Vienna State Opera Public recruiting to 80% of tourists, mostly from the far East. Now coming back to old singing. This kind of opera will never more happen. Maybe some fans in the future generations? I would guess very limited. As long I am living, I know one fan of Franco Corelli and Renata Tebaldi exists at least in Austria. Actually, the best opera recordings technically were made from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. Digital recordings were a step down from analog tape. Having said that, I don’t know how this was recorded. It looks dubbed, but I’m not sure. BTW, I heard Corelli on his farewell tour with Tebaldi, and they both had huge voices.

One of the great aspects of this opera is it's libretto . It is very poetic and to the highest standard . In particular in this great aria sung by the poet Chenier.
When I first heard this aria well over 50 years ago it absolutely blew me away…and it still does. I even prefer it to Come un bel di di Maggie. But, then, I adore the entire opera!

My all time"dream team" for this magnificent opera would be the burnished voices of Corelli,Scotto and Bastiannini ;I know that it would have pushed Miss Scotto to her vocal limits however her total musical /acting conviction inspired by her two magnificent colleagues and maybe conducted by Maestro Gavazzini,or Maestro Cillario, would have been a TOTAL ITALIAN operatic triumph!.........,one can only dream!!! The recording with Domingo,Scotto and Milnes conducted by Maestro Levine is the best of the modern enregistments ;they all sing outstandingly and one can "feel" Miss Scotto's TOTAL absorption of her role as "Maddalena de Coigny".May she rest in Peace with all her illustrious colleagues.

Corelli had a few roles that even today remain in his domain alone. CHENIER was one & here he has a fine partner in Celestina Casapietra, a former student of Gina Cigna, who seldom, as far as I know, ever sang in the states. This performance was recorded fairly late (1973?) & Corelli is still in optimum form. Physically & vocally he was absolutely ideal in this role. Bonisolli had already arrived on the scene & was considerable competition but his primary advantage was his total lack of nerves. His upper range was even a bit more extensive but overall tonal beauty & sensitivity were still, I feel, on a lower level than Corelli. How interesting that both died within a day of each other!
There are some other differences between the two Franco’s, they actually had different types of voices. Bonisolli begun with far greater resources than Corelli. If you look back and read articles at the time some people were excited about the idea of Corelli being a heldentenor. That is where Corelli started, a huge voice that was really comfortable up to Bflat. Corelli tweaked and modified his voice over the years, until he able to sing high repertoire and even lyric tenor repertoire. Corelli always had a voice that was a few sizes bigger than Bonisolli. However, I say will Corelli always a very beautiful voice, it was very wide and voluptuous, and round with huge high notes and incredibly sharp squillo. Beauty is subjective, but I think Corelli always had the more beautiful voice, but anyone can easily disagree with that as well. Bonisolli started as a very high lyric tenor, more like Giacomo Lauri Volpi. He could have done anything with his voice and he did. But unlike Corelli he never had the great squillo sound, or someone like Lauri Volpi who the king of squillo. He did have some ring, but his voice did not really have that heroic sound. I think this is the type of sound that Bonisolli should tried to go for, he had all of attributes right from the start, he could have been one of the best. But he unfortunately went for the Giacomini and Cecchele approach of really over darkening and over emphasising the middle register. He lost elegance over the years that he had at the start. Corelli with a bigger voice had more nuance and finesse. Bonisolli could have been similar to a Lauri Volpi. But still he was a very much a great tenor, even if he did not exactly rise to the potential that he had.

(a Maddalena) Sol l'occhio vostro esprime umanamente qui un guardo di pietà, ond'io guardato ho a voi si come a un angelo. E dissi: Ecco la bellezza della vita! Ma, poi, a le vostre parole, un novello dolor m'ha colto in pieno petto. O giovinetta bella, d'un poeta non disprezzate il detto: Udite! I saw him in Chenier with Tebaldi and got their autographs. Also saw him in Fanciulla and Tosca. Fantastic voice that covered the entire theatre.
IMO, Franco Corelli was the greatest opera tenor that there ever was. We will never see another with the talent that this man had.

His upper range was even a bit more extensive but overall tonal beauty & sensitivity were still, I feel, on a lower level than Corelli. How interesting that both died within a day of each other!

There are some other differences between the two Franco’s, they actually had different types of voices. Bonisolli begun with far greater resources than Corelli. If you look back and read articles at the time some people were excited about the idea of Corelli being a heldentenor. That is where Corelli started, a huge voice that was really comfortable up to Bflat. Corelli tweaked and modified his voice over the years, until he able to sing high repertoire and even lyric tenor repertoire. Corelli always had a voice that was a few sizes bigger than Bonisolli. However, I say will Corelli always a very beautiful voice, it was very wide and voluptuous, and round with huge high notes and incredibly sharp squillo. Beauty is subjective, but I think Corelli always had the more beautiful voice, but anyone can easily disagree with that as well. Bonisolli started as a very high lyric tenor, more like Giacomo Lauri Volpi. He could have done anything with his voice and he did. But unlike Corelli he never had the great squillo sound, or someone like Lauri Volpi who the king of squillo. He did have some ring, but his voice did not really have that heroic sound. I think this is the type of sound that Bonisolli should tried to go for, he had all of attributes right from the start, he could have been one of the best. But he unfortunately went for the Giacomini and Cecchele approach of really over darkening and over emphasising the middle register. He lost elegance over the years that he had at the start. Corelli with a bigger voice had more nuance and finesse. Bonisolli could have been similar to a Lauri Volpi. But still he was a very much a great tenor, even if he did not exactly rise to the potential that he had.
