It's good to be reminded that what we tend to take for granted on a daily basis. For example, I live in a coastal suburb. The sunsets over the ocean can be truly spectacular and yet most of the time I don't even watch them because of life pressures. It's great to be reminded to take the time occasionally to enjoy the natural beauties of this great state.

For anyone visiting Perth, a trip to Fremantle too is always good. Not to mention places like Hillarys Boat Harbour and Lesmurdie falls (great view out towards the city). The last 2 might be a bit harder to get to, but worth a visit.
Perth is dry heat with not much rain from November to March. Usually very hot from mid December to February. It is much cooler April to October. It rains mostly say mid May to August. It is sometimes considered temperate, some call it similar to a Mediterranean climate.

As someone who lives in Perth, that description of how messy the public transport is for travellers with the Smart Riders \ exact change for buses, 100% agree with you. It should be easily accessible from any stop if it's a requirement to get on the bus.
Yeah you're right Perth is a good base to travel around Western Australia. Perth is more spread out than other cities and yes it has the best beaches than other cities in my opinion. Although, as yu found out, it's best to go in the mornings because that sea breeze is wild in the afternoons.
Funny, you grow up with the “Fremantle doctor” sea breeze, you think it’s normal. Apparently Perth’s very windy and landing at the airport can be tricky with cross winds, especially in summer.
The CBD is the "dead" center of Perth. It's a commercial center with a population that go home to the suburbs. North Bridge has a clubbing nightlife or you need to go to the night spots like the Leederville/Subiaco type areas. Perth does have a lot of low key spots that you miss if doing a flash visit, like the DNA/Helix tower in Kings Park, you've got to stop to smell the flowers ☺
The wind when blowing S/ S WEST is called the Fremantle Doctor. Usually comes in around 2pm in Summer just to cool things down . Perth is also called the WINDY CITY. The metropolitan area of Perth is at a guess approximately 130 klms long by 50 klms wide so it's spread over a wide area.
When I moved to Perth over 10 years ago, my first impression of the city was not the best. Over time I love taking weekends in the city. There really is lots to do. Entertainment, more parks, lots of hidden bars and restaurants. Also I noticed you walked everywhere in the city including from Kings Park down to Elizabeth Quay. Maybe it was because you first had trouble with the public transport not having a SmartRider card. Cat buses are free and take you all over Perth city. Think you would’ve been able to see lots more of our city if you took advantage of this. You didn’t make it over the other side to Optus Stadium and Matagarup bridge. When you come back next time definitely check out the Margaret River region (wine country) to the south and maybe Exmouth or Broome to the north.
I’m not from Perth and have only been there once. But my observation is similar to yours. There are some beautiful buildings, the city is spotless and manicured, but it does feel more like a business centre and smaller with less of interest in the CBD compared to the big cities of the east coast. Fremantle is definitely more interesting from a visitor perspective. Pubs, cafes and restaurants and incredible architecture down every street. But overall, Perth is beautiful and would be a great place to live. Oh, and it’s windy!
Perth is very spreadout (it's actually considered the longest city in the world). There is lots to do, but it might not always be happening right in the city centre. There are plenty of nice places to visit, though they might be a bit harder for tourists to get to easily if they're staying in the city.
It has to do with the zoning of the CBD and historical sprawl that's happened in Perth's metropolitan area. Unlike many other downtown/CBD areas around the world, a lot of the main attractions are actually far removed from the CBD itself. Perth is what I'd see as a nature-centric city in terms of tourism. Obviously the CBD has points of interest like the Murray & Hay Street malls, the Perth mint etc. The other places to visit tend to involve nature to a degree such as the Swan River, Rottnest Island, Caversham Wildlife Park, Kings Park, Perth Zoo, AQWA a.s.o. If you want to see older buildings you can see some of them around the Perth CBD (unfortunately during the 60s-80s many older buildings got demolished) but Guildford and Fremantle would be your go-to places to see older buildings, Fremantle being the far more known and popular of the two. The CBD itself has been seeing a bit of a revitalisation over the past number of years. I'd say expect it to be a lot more lively by 2030 when the rest of the Elizabeth Quay & Perth City Link areas are finally built up and established. For shopping, people tend to go out into suburbia to shopping centres like Karrinyup, Morley Galleria, Carousel and Booragoon. Historically the CBD was zoned in such a way that its residential population has been relatively small but with newer mid and high rises comes more people. Overall, Perth is a very sprawled city that feels laid back compared to Melbourne or Sydney. The CBD is much smaller and attractions tend to be spread out into suburbia. The people are lovely though.
Tourists should go to Northbridge if staying in the city. Highgate or Mt Lawley are close and a civilised night out. Fremantle is fabulous. Perth definitely sprawls over a large area, not super high density. Not that many people live in the actual city. Most live in the suburbs. A hire car might work for some. CAT (central area transit) buses are free, you can recognise them by a giant picture of a cat on them (not joking).
Optus stadium and RAC arena are worth visiting for events or a tour and the WA Museum in the city (towards Northbridge end) it's huge with lots of interesting things , worth a visit . But yes it's a awesome lifestyle here.

Perth is a very long city spread up and down the coast stretching 150kms (93 miles) and the inner city CBD is really only our working hub for office workers as we have huge shopping malls spread all across the city where locals go close to where they live. If you would like to see more of our vast coast which is some 13,000kms long jump onto these tourist YT vloggers - "Wout of the World" and "Molly Dixon" who have some amazing footage of their travels in our State. Perth is not a big city and that is just how we like it - but the lifestyle here is incredible if your not into big city's and heavy traffic and like the outdoor lifestyle. Our weather is much like Cali in the US. Perth is mutlicultural much like most of Australia with immigrants who came from all over the world for a better life in particular a better work/life balance for their own health & well being. Great place to raise a family.

Former bus driver from Perth here, sounds like the driver was a bit of a shit bloke. If people don't have a smart rider or correct cash you just let them jump on for free, especially if they are tourists and don't know the system.
Here in Perth, we highly value our remoteness and our anonymity on the world stage, despite what our tourism and politicians say, We choose to remain anonymous and we would really like to stay off the international stage and scope. Speak for yourself. We do need immigrants for economic reasons. There are jobs we can’t fill. I enjoy the suburb where I live for the cultural diversity there.
Perth is officially the longest city in the world, taking over from Sochi in Russia. It is almost 150 km (95 miles) long, spread out and thinly populated by world standards, only 2.3 million people. Neighbours are not a problem, traffic and road layout is second to none. Public transport is top class, CAT buses are free, and circulating regularly in and around the city centre, including Kings Park. You were badly advised there! Perth is not much more than 60km wide, from the beach up into the hills, so the beach is a huge attraction, and there are hundreds of beaches. Crowding is not a problem. It is probably the wealthiest city in the world. There are numerous minor city centres scattered around, Fremantle is just one, and those centres are where stuff happens. The city is only for working, business, shows, concerts and sporting events. Perth averages 8 hours of sunshine for every day of the year. It is a 3 day drive, averaging 100km an hour, from the South of the State, being the Southern Ocean, driving North with the Indian Ocean on your left, to the Pacific Ocean, almost 3,000 kilometres. That's just in one state.
20 years ago, no one really cares about Perth but now it really is a hidden gem travel destination.

Former bus driver from Perth here, sounds like the driver was a bit of a shit bloke. If people don't have a smart rider or correct cash you just let them jump on for free, especially if they are tourists and don't know the system.
Here in Perth, we highly value our remoteness and our anonymity on the world stage, despite what our tourism and politicians say, We choose to remain anonymous and we would really like to stay off the international stage and scope. In saying that, welcome and goodbye! Please don't tell anyone about this place, we really don't like or need immigrants. From anywhere.
Speak for yourself. We do need immigrants for economic reasons. There are jobs we can’t fill. I enjoy the suburb where I live for the cultural diversity there.

Perth is officially the longest city in the world, taking over from Sochi in Russia. It is almost 150 km (95 miles) long, spread out and thinly populated by world standards, only 2.3 million people. Neighbours are not a problem, traffic and road layout is second to none. Public transport is top class, CAT buses are free, and circulating regularly in and around the city centre, including Kings Park. You were badly advised there! Perth is not much more than 60km wide, from the beach up into the hills, so the beach is a huge attraction, and there are hundreds of beaches. Crowding is not a problem. It is probably the wealthiest city in the world. There are numerous minor city centres scattered around, Fremantle is just one, and those centres are where stuff happens. The city is only for working, business, shows, concerts and sporting events. Perth averages 8 hours of sunshine for every day of the year. It is a 3 day drive, averaging 100km an hour, from the South of the State, being the Southern Ocean, driving North with the Indian Ocean on your left, to the Pacific Ocean, almost 3,000 kilometres. That's just in one state.
yep, when you live in Perth but are 30 mins from the actual city, you don't go into the city a lot when you can do the same things closer to home.
