Computers have truly changed the world. CNC is becoming the next consumerisation movement. Great videos and clear explanation like this will really help the masses. Excellent video, thanks.
Strats can have truss rod access at either end. 50's and early 60's models were mostly heel end adjustment, the 70's strats have adjustment at the nut end.
The MacBook in the video has a Intel based processor so therefore using Boot-Camp, or Parallels it's able to either boot directly into Windows 7 OS or run it in a virtualized machine. The virtualized machine allows easy access to both the Windows and Mac OS.
No. Stratocaster necks have their truss rod adjusted under the pickguard on the body. It isn't like most other guitars where the truss rod access behind the nut on the headstock.
Hi Bob, very nice video, I really enjoyed hatching it, what are the chances you could send me the file or the g code? I just made a CNC mill but do not know how to make the program to cut a neck like the one you cut. Thank you very much for your time and attention.
can rhino work on a mac like you have it . some people say you can't but thru a PC only but I see you have a mac . i have a mac and would love to use it with it. thanks.
Hey David, stoked that you're wanting to get into the CNC world! If you want to skip the process and just talk to someone directly to figure out what would work best for you, since there are different sizes and options, call (800) 234-1976
+Brainsmachine.bc I haven't had the opportunity to digitize one of those yet. All necks are same but different shapes. $31.80 for the material, flat necks not angled headstock, 3.5 hours on the CNC machine and about 8 hours, file to polish time, then another 5-8 for the fret board. And then there is the design and CNC programming cost 70 hours at $45/per, I forgot the patent about 5k (in work now) Still interested? this is production machining tooling costs which are the same as a one-off first. If I do the work myself I cannot charge myself. The next neck up to do is the J-bass. do you wish to see pictures? This neck was intro'd at NAMM 2016, billet, it works well.
+OZZtosh LUMA Guitars My guitar changes tuning when it gets cold. I was hoping an aluminum neck would stop that. could I save money if I could do some of the labor myself ?
Aw, the poor second guy. He looks horrified! Imagine seeing a craft you have taken years to master being replicated by a machine. He is so humble though in his final comments regarding it as just another tool.
Yeah Rhino doesn't run on mac for some stupid reason. I own both but definitely prefer OSX. Ultimate solution- Hackintosh! I'm actually building one now.
A master craftsman would have looked at the drawing and noticed that the truss rod slot was supposed to go all the way through the neck and out the headstock end (1:04). Otherwise the truss rod can never be adjusted (or even installed). Oops! CNC may let you carve like a master craftsman, but it won't make you as smart as one. LOL! Disclaimer: I'd jump at the chance to own an affordable CNC machine for producing musical instrument parts (and would undoubtedly make a few oops myself!)

Locator dowel pins and double stick tape.

This video is truly well made. Thank you.
in this video you use vacuum to fix the wood when flip? or just dowell pins?
No. Stratocaster necks have their truss rod adjusted under the pickguard on the body. It isn't like most other guitars where the truss rod access behind the nut on the headstock.
Can I use SolidWorks for modeling?
Yep! But you'll need a program like VCarve to interpret your models by the machine
Great video, thanks for showing us your techniques.
Are you using double stick tape to hold pieces in place in conjunction with the pins?
Yes.
That is awesome, wish I could afford it.
How about cutting the fretboard and the fretboard slots? Can it be done .022 fret board slots? and locations?
Please call us for more information at 800.234.1976 and ask for CNC division. They will have a more accuracy answer to your question.

Router Bob is using the program Parallels to run PC programs on a mac.
What is the power of the router?
This machine is outdated, however, you can see options of the updated Swift Series here:
lagunatools.com/cnc/swift-series/
How do they remove / hide locator pin holes afterwards? I'm trying to work it out in my head but can't!
Feel free to call us at 800.234.1976
Smucker The fretboard will cover them
truckingdrummer what if it was a maple / one-piece maple neck?
You would have to use a clamping system of some kind to hold the piece in place while being machined
The neck looks weird where it joins to the headstock. it looks like it has a lump where it should be a smooth transition. nice work tho.
He explains it at around 4:58
Hmm shape is wrong if its a strat replica though. that would get in the way methinks
Is the IQ model CNC large enough to do the necks?
Yes. We also have an upcoming video of one of our customers doing the guitar necks on his Laguna CNC IQ. th-cam.com/video/-p0D82otZwQ/w-d-xo.html
Great video guys!
Are you using RhinoCam xpress or RhinoCam standard?
I am looking to have some necks made. From a pattern. this looks like just the job. any contacts of neck makers please

Yep, lots of people do this!
I don't think this was a mistake, it's quite possible that the customer wanted to reverse mount the Truss Rod.
Thanks for the cool video. Great information.
ha can this machine engrave metal and acrylic
yes
windows 7 in a Mac? :P
Great Video thank you for sharing.
what software is that?
Anyone tried aluminum with ebony fret board yet
+Brainsmachine.bc YES, I have it done bostosh0@cox.net
(and it works) same weight as wood never will warp
+OZZtosh LUMA Guitars how much does it cost for a jackson v neck

Oh yeah is weighs the same as maple and doesn't nee a truss rod.
The heaviest part is the ebony and fret wires.

could you make a more in depth tutorial ?
very cool stuff :D
hello you have files for sale, which your contact
Sorry, we do not have files for sale. If you have more questions, please feel free to call us at 800.234.1976

that's stuning, but the neck/headstock transition doesn't look normal to me
Windows on a Mac? The world's gone crazy.
Yeah Rhino doesn't run on mac for some stupid reason. I own both but definitely prefer OSX. Ultimate solution- Hackintosh! I'm actually building one now.
The hardware doesn't seem to be the problem. The software alone would put me in the poorhouse, that's where it gets pricey.
using rhino?so now an architecture student can make guitar..
