Great video Nick, Settle to Carlisle line is best experience on grim weather than Sunny Weather (But Sunny weather does have it's advantages) But speaking of Yorkshire I did mentioned in a video of mine at Bramley (Hampshire) that one day some TH-camrs will do a journey from Bramley in Yorkshire to Bramley in Hampshire.... So I'm putting that in as a suggestion lol
haha yes, if he ever did that be wonderful. I'm from Glasgow and nick did say on his last trip he really enjoyed the density of the stations and the fact they aren't mobbed with commuters adds a charm
Great video and adventure! I've always found the Settle-Carlisle railway journey more spectacular when it's sunny. Definitely a lovely railway line to ride on! Enjoyed the point to point video!
Great video. The Settle and Carlisle line is certainly stunning! How about doing Stratford International to the internationally known Stratford-upon-Avon? Passing through Stratford and Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway! (and come and say hello when you get there!)
Kirkby Stephen station was designed by the Midland Railway company's Chief Architect John Holloway Sanders and opened in 1876. As the company architect, John Holloway Sanders designed many stations for them like Dent, Settle, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Langwathby, Appleby, Creswell, Lazonby & Kirkoswald, Dore & Totley, and Shirebrook. And he also designed the Dandry Mire Viaduct! When the Settle & Carlisle Line was being built, the traversing of Dandry Mire was to have been by use of an embankment, but the bog swallowed all of the material poured into it, so a trench was dug instead, and the viaduct was constructed! The Ribblehead Viaduct on the other hand was designed by John Sydney Crossley. Kirkby station on Merseyrail was originally built in 1848, as part of the Liverpool and Bury Railway. This then became part of the main Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway route between Manchester Victoria and the former Liverpool Exchange. After the nationalization in 1948, the use of the line as a through Liverpool to Manchester route declined, however local commuter traffic levels remained significant. Despite this, it was still on the Beeching Axe, but thankfully its closure was rejected in December 1967. It joined the then newly created Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive's rail network in 1969. In 1977, the station's configuration was altered due to electrification and the closure of Liverpool Exchange.
Brilliant journey the Settle & Carlisle line def looks like a lovely line to ride with lots of lovely stations & i like the class 802s & the GWR IETS also shake when they change from electric to dissel
You could’ve done a slightly different route back by going to Long Preston or Hellifield, then taking a train from there to Lancaster, and then heading down the WCML to Manchester on TPE. Granted it’s probably a much longer journey but offers variety. In fact if you timed it right you could get the Liverpool Lime St - Glasgow TPE service to Carlisle and then come down from there to Kirkby Stephen. As regards future point to point, I think an interesting one would be Dalston (in Cumbria - on the Cumbrian Coast Line) to Dalston Junction/Kingsland on the London Overground!
As a Carlisle lass its nice to see one of your videos at our end of the country. You might like to try the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway next time you're in Cumbria (if you haven't already) or as the line is known locally...La'al Ratty (La'al pronounced as Larl). Miniature steam trains, roman ruins, a train museum & a nice cafe at the final stop at the foot of the fells...so much to enjoy 👍🚂
How about Barry to Barry Links? Bearsden to Bearstead? Beaulieu Road to Beauly? Bournemouth to Bourne End? Bradford to Bradford-on-Avon? Brampton (Cumbria) to Brampton (Suffolk)? Buxted to Buxton?
I wonder if you could do Rainham (London) to Rainham (Medway), Lee to Leigh-on-Sea, Runcorn to Runcorn East, Berwick to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Exeter Central to Exeter St. David’s, Bristol Temple Meads to Bristol Parkway, Ashford International to Ashford (Surrey) and many more.
Wow that line towards Kirkby Stephen is beautiful. Shame about the rain. I think it would be cool if the map in the intro (roughly) matched what was happening in the episode
Super video as usual. You could actually have done two point to points in one video by going to Preston from Kirkby, then to Long Preston via Lancaster to join the Kirkby Stephen train. Perhaps the timetable might not have fitted in as well though as the trains across country from Lancaster (another beautiful but lesser known line) are not as frequent. I suspect that there will be other possible double point to points that are doable if you really want to challenge yourself!
There used to be like a 2 or 3 minute wait in Newton-le-Willows because those Nova's are really speedy on Electric power and the timetable didn't cater for the speed difference... Yet despite the Nova's it still takes two hours from Liverpool to Leeds. The wait is done in Victoria now, it's to let the stopper service (using the old faithful 185s) from Piccadilly get far enough in front so it doesn't slow down the Nova's. Well that's if they don't get delayed or cancelled...
Using the train should be quicker than going by car, but 2 hours on a train to do a journey you can do (station to station) in a car in under 1hr30 is stupid, and probably cheaper going by car too.
No way! I took that very same journey from Lime Street to Leeds not too long ago (my first time on an inter city train! ... I don't get around much.) for an interview :D
Hi Nick, great video and love to see you coming in Cumbria !! Our gorgeous county also has an outstanding coastal line from Barrow-in-furness to Carlisle, hope you will have the opportunity to hop on a train making this journey one day ! And Happy New Year !!!
Charing Cross (London) to Charing Cross (Glasgow) Edinburgh Haymarket to Haymarket (T&W Metro) Queens Road (Peckham) - Queens Road (Metrolink) Edinburgh Haymarket to Edinburgh Waverley - you’d have to go via Carlisle and Newcastle.
Absolutely excellent video. Whats wild is that this 5 hour train journey takes just 1.5 hours by car… 😳 For this series I am still patiently waiting for in my opinion one of the most interesting geographically; Rainham (Essex) to Rainham (Kent)
Kirkby was founded around 870 AD according to Bronze Age evidence. Kirk-by derives from the Northern dialect of Old English word Kirk ('church') and by (settlement or village; cognate with Old Norse byr). Kirkby once had ROF Kirkby, a Royal Ordnance Factory, which was established in 1939 and produced munitions from 1940 to 1946. At its peak, the factory employed over 20,000 workers. There were two explosions at Kirkby ROF, one in February 1944 and one in September 1944. It took three months of work to clear 4,000 bombs which were buried in the rubble after the second accident, with a total of 37 awards for bravery and distinguished conduct made by King George VI. Kirkby station has been the site of many accidents. In June 1857, a goods train collided with an excursion train stopped at Kirkby. The goods train passed a signal at danger protecting the stationary passenger train, overrunning it by 238 yards (218 meters). More than 200 people were injured, some of them severely. The driver and guard of the goods train were found to be at fault for the incident, having not reacted to an adverse signal in a timely fashion despite clear weather and good visibility. In March 2021, a train overshot the platform and overran the former buffer stop and 12 people had minor injuries. And investigation concluded the driver was on their phone.
Happy New Year and a great first video of the year from a grim place to a beautiful place!! At least you got a three carriage 158 for when it gets busy (which is good), quite often you can get a coach tour get on that train and they do reserve seats! Hope you didn’t have to wait to long for your train back in that weather?
Yeh since the December timetable change they’ve added soooooooo much padding to that route! Its my daily commuter and yeh quite often we sit around Victoria for 5-10 mins Worst part is… the train is now earlier to depart, i get home no earlier and i dont get to claim delay repay every journey with all this padding 😭
Can I suggest "Point to Point" from University to University? I remember this coming up as a question in the "minimum number of changes" round of the annual Oxford v Cambridge railway quiz, about 30 years ago... Only the change since then is that now there are *three* stations in the UK called "University": the obvious one in Birmingham; the one on Northern Ireland Railways; and the newer one on the Tyne and Wear Metro. So you could do a point to point to point episode...
You missed the other station in Kirkby Stephen?!!! Kirkby Stephen East is a restored Station forming part of 'The Stainmore Railway' ... you'll have to go back 😮 May be to add to your challenge go via Carlisle, then south via the Kirkby Stephen Stations, on to leeds and to Nottinghamshire for Kirkby in Ashfield on the Robin hood line, with 2 options, Sheffield and worksop, or to Nottingham and back out. Do the whole and return to home without travelling on the same rails twice?
got some possible point to points for you: Hazel Grove to Haslemere, Haymarket (Edinburgh) to Haymarket (Newcastle) and Waterloo (Merseyside) to London Waterloo
Now try Cambridge to Cambridge North taking the indirect route. This means you would have to go the following routes (and not double back): Cambridge - London - Norwich - Ely - Cambridge North Either GA or Thameslink is suitable to London GA London - Norwich GA Norwich to Cambridge North or EMR Norwich to Ely, then GN or GA to Cambridge North (note that CrossCountry doesn't stop at Cambridge North) GA - Greater Anglia | EMR - East Midlands Railway | GN - Great Northern
Point to point from the first staion alphabetically (Abbey wood) to the last station in the UK alphabetically - Ystrad Rhondda :D though you'll have to wait til after february to do this entire journey by rail due to major works on TFW services from Pontypridd!
Does WINDsor to WINDermere count for Point to Point? If you end at Windermere there is a spectatular open top bus ride into the Lake District, if you get a Plusbus ticket. You could max out on local trains on this route.
I enjoyed the video. Here's an idea: Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate. Wigan NW to Lancaster. Lancaster to Long Preston. Long Preston to Kirkby Stephen. Or to avoid a walk between the two Wigan stations: Kirkby to Sandhills. Sandhills to Ormskirk. Ormskirk to Preston. Preston to Lancaster. Then as before. Both far quicker than going via Leeds City. Which leads me to an idea. A race between between you and someone else - an added dimesion would be to both roll a dice to determine that minimum number of different train companies used. Eg. Start at Lime Street, roll the dice and the first to Swansea wins - Loser pays for both journeys.
I got one for you Swinton (South Yorkshire) to Swinton (Manchester) or another one somebody did turn up in Sheffield trying to get to Swindon (Wilts) they got it wrong and ended up the other side of the county aiming for Swinton (SY)
Point to point Southend Victoria to London Victoria via Manchester Victoria Ga to Liverpool Street Ga to Norwich Emr to Manchester Piccadilly TPE to Manchester Victoria TPE to leeds Cross country to Birmingham new st Xc to reading Swr to Clapham junction Southern to London Victoria
There's another way you could have got there, Go to headbott, Take the train to Wigan, Train to Lancaster, Then to Hellifield. And then a direct train to kirtby stethens
Nick can you do St James Park (London Underground) to St James (Tyne and Wear metro) or Monument (London Underground) to Monument (Tyne and Wear metro) for point to point videos. Love the videos by the way.
hey can you do Little Sutton (Ellesmere Port) to Sutton (Greater London) might be a bit of a stretch but have both lived in Ellesmere Port and Sutton id love to see this! loving the content nick
20 hours before posting?
@@Countrystephen memberships get early access!
@@Countrystephen I have a TH-cam membership helping to support Nick, so I get early access to the videos which go up the night before they go public.
Excellent point to point
Whitchurch to Whitchurch to Whitchurch (yes there are three) would make an epic point to point to point 😅
You could have made the trilogy by including Kirkby-in-Ashfield (Notts) - though we pronounce the second ‘k’ round here!
Lovely video! Suggestion:
1. London Road (Guildford) to London Road (Brighton)
2. Monument (Tyne & Wear) to Monument (Circle & District Lines)
And when Northumberland Park (Newcastle) opens as a national Rail station this year on the Northumberland Line, there to Northumberland Park (London)
Next Video : Charring Cross (London) to Charring Cross (Glasgow)
haha yes, if he ever did that be wonderful. I'm from Glasgow and nick did say on his last trip he really enjoyed the density of the stations and the fact they aren't mobbed with commuters adds a charm
*charing
Great video and adventure! I've always found the Settle-Carlisle railway journey more spectacular when it's sunny.
Definitely a lovely railway line to ride on! Enjoyed the point to point video!
Here’s an idea for the series, Gillingham (Dorset) to Gillingham (Kent).
There’s also a gillingham in Norfolk but there isn’t a station there
Enjoyable video as usual Nick! GLovesTrains did a vlog when she stayed at Kirkby Stephen for 3 nights in December 2021
Great video. The Settle and Carlisle line is certainly stunning!
How about doing Stratford International to the internationally known Stratford-upon-Avon? Passing through Stratford and Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway!
(and come and say hello when you get there!)
Another great video! I reckon Wakefield Westgate to Wakefield Kirkgate is a contender for a pointless journey if you hadn't thought of it already.
Wigan Wallgate to North Western aswell

I've done the Settle to Carlisle line before and the weather was also grim. However I had fun.
Brilliant journey the Settle & Carlisle line def looks like a lovely line to ride with lots of lovely stations & i like the class 802s & the GWR IETS also shake when they change from electric to dissel
You should do Berwick-upon-Tweed to Berwick (Sussex)!

As regards future point to point, I think an interesting one would be Dalston (in Cumbria - on the Cumbrian Coast Line) to Dalston Junction/Kingsland on the London Overground!
Burnside to Burneside would be an interesting one, only 1 letter difference...
Nice video. I was just looking on a map and maybe a good point to point would be Stroud (Gloucestershire) to Strood (Kent).

Nice video Nick, hope you had a good new year too 👍
Another great one Nick.
Really enjoy these point to point videos.
Thank you
I thought you did the same video again, haha. I loved this episode! Amazing views despite the weather.
Great video! Another idea for a point to point journey video could be Stratford upon Avon to Stratford (London)
Ah Nick, another good informative video. Keep up the good work D'Artagnan, Scotland next??
Wow that line towards Kirkby Stephen is beautiful. Shame about the rain. I think it would be cool if the map in the intro (roughly) matched what was happening in the episode
Imagine the map is much easier to use the same one each time. A lot of work to create a new one each time.

Another one to do would be Catford to Catford Bridge in London, as both a Point to Point and a Pointless Journey

7:27 Yeah but do you not know it's always grim oop narf?! haha
Love the outro! Happy new year
great video i love these pointless journeys
Hi Nick Happy New Year and i really enjoyed that video so much from point to point.
Charing Cross (London) to Charing Cross (Glasgow)

If you want a reason to travel to Settle, you could do all the stations on the Settle ---> Carlisle line. 😉
Happy New Year and a great first video of the year from a grim place to a beautiful place!! Kirkby grim? They decorate it with litter to make it look, well, even more rubbish, literally.
Yeh since the December timetable change they’ve added soooooooo much padding to that route! Its my daily commuter and yeh quite often we sit around Victoria for 5-10 mins

you could do swindon to swinton for another point to point. i always love watching these point to points, keep up the good work
Epping, Essex, England to Epping, either Victoria or NSW, Australia could be epic. Also, try Walthamstow Central, London to Central, Hong Kong.
London Road (Brighton) to London Road (Guildford) would be a good episode
2:56 new brighton? well now you gotta go from there to brighton
Love it 🎉 Good video❤
Now try Cambridge to Cambridge North taking the indirect route. This means you would have to go the following routes (and not double back):

Found an alright excuse for you to visit Settle. Pointless Journeys: Settle to Giggleswick. They are pretty much both in Settle.
Point to point from the first staion alphabetically (Abbey wood) to the last station in the UK alphabetically - Ystrad Rhondda :D though you'll have to wait til after february to do this entire journey by rail due to major works on TFW services from Pontypridd!

you could west Worthing to Worthing or brighton to new brighton

Interestjng route. Why did you choose this version over going via Headbolt Lane to Wigan and Carlisle?
A nice place to arrive at. Maybe you could do Chester Road to Chester, i can come and say hi then when you start!
You could do Chichester Newcastle upon Tyne to Chichester West Sussex
had you done this on a summer sunday, could have taken a different route over some rarely served track
Great video Nick How about Barrow in Furnace to Barrow on Soar.?

Loved the vid, may i suggest moreton to moreton marsh
Try Milford(Surrey) to Milford haven
Hythe on the RHDR to New Hythe on Merseyrail?
I have a good suggestion for a point to point journey Bank (London Underground & DLR) to Bank foot ( Tyne and wear metro)
