Gujarati Onion & Potato Curry Recipe| Kanda Bateta Nu Shak | Onion Potato Tomato Curry | Vegan Curry

  • In this video, I show you how to make this simple and delicious onion, potato and tomato curry from Gujarat. This is the first curry I learned to make as a child because of its simplicity of ingredients and techniques. Not to mention how delicious it is! It's a comfort food for me as it takes me back home to the times when I was little and was learning to cook from my mother (which I still continue to do as there is so much to learn)!

    INGREDIENTS
    · 6 - 7 Small Potatoes (about 500g)
    · 1 Medium Onion
    · 1 Medium, Red, Ripe Tomato, chopped
    · 1/4 Cup (60ml) Oil
    · 1/4 tspn Mustard Seeds
    · 1/2 tspn Cumin Seeds
    · 1/2 Turmeric
    · 1/2 tspn Red Chili Powder
    · 1/2 Ginger-Garlic-Chili Paste
    · 2 tspn Coriander-Cumin Powder
    · 1 tspn Salt
    · 1 Tbspn Tomato Puree
    · 1 1/2 to 2 Cups Boiling Water
    · Coriander for Garnishing

    Thank you for this lovely recipe, I have cooked it three times (forth time tonight) it has become one of our favourites we are having it with Tandoori chicken Roti and cucumber raita, love from Scotland x

    This is my favourite shak and i have to have with Tuver daal khichadi and vaghareli chhash. Which variety of potatoes did you use?

      It's my favourite too!! Here I used the normal white potatoes. I find they get really nice & soft at the right time without completely breaking up. I like it with Khichdi and Kadhi, so yummy!

    The is a great recipe. I whipped it up in no time. I added some boiled eggs to it to bulk it out and it turned out great. The eggs soak up all the flavours from the tomato gravy :-) Will def make this more often!

    Good recipe. Why add tomato paste?

      It helps to thicken the sauce and give a better texture and colour in my opinion. Try it with a little and see. Enjoy!
