Man, I can almost hear the brackets every time Samus mentions [The Baby] .
You can tell that she has a real emotional attachment to [The Baby]
whoever the voice actress was should have forced them to rewrite the script. Samus is powerful and isn't stopped so easily by simple emotions. She's supposed to be a badass. stupid team ninja...
Don't get me wrong I think they did a great job picking who to speak for Samus, but you can't deny she has feelings too. Watching a creature who thinks you are its mother dies, your arch enemy who killed your parents and witnessing it and went into years of hardening yourself to become strong enough to kill it only to come back again without a scratch on him. Yea, it be kind of hard to me not show some emotions to any of those.
I was there from the start. 1987, 15yrs old......
We were huddled around the TV one fateful night and said, "OMG IT'S A GIRL?!!!"
and yes, it took a year for us to beat it. We didn't have "The Power".

same here except my kid was 14 and we were dad and mom!! lol we played it more ! I loved the game after that 😊 a woman kicking butt back in the 80's!!!!!!!

I did not even exist back then..... its a wierd feeling knowing that when i play games from long ago like metroid and halo i did not even exist (well i was a wee little lad only a few months old when halo came out) and that when i am playing those games it gives me a feeling of thier legacy and how they have been played by many generations. It gives me a feeling of pride. =)
Even tho it’s been years I enjoyed playing the game as a fan, besides the cgi slowdown it was a good story and remembered all the characters used,

i understand why the metroid didnt remember samus as its mother, think about it! a animal views its mother in 1 way during its whole life, for samus its a different story, when she originally found the baby metroid she was wearing her power suit, nothing added on, just a normal power suit, however when the baby metroid sees samus again, shes wearing the gravity suit, in other words, her appearance changed greatly.
oh, the monotone monologue, gotta love it. A woman with all the inflection of a lifeless cardboard box. after 5 minutes of it, all my ears were depleted. if only "the baby"could step in and give me another energy tank, i might be able to bear this video for an extra minute or two.
In the next other m, i think samus's voice might be the final boss.

Fun fact- the voice actress was explicitly told to act monotone and emotionless, funnily enough she actually nailed her job- blame the director for this travesty.

I don't see what's so bad about this game. Samus seems a bit PTSD but many people have described the death of the baby metroid as heart breaking.

and watching a monster you killed that killed your parents after years of training and hardening yourself for the moment to kill it. Suddenly comes back again...Yea I too be "OMG can anything kill him"!!!!!
One time she mentioned it. I mean for someone that you'd grow close to basically casting you out like that, I'm sure that's legitimate reason to feel hurt in that moment. But she didn't exactly whine about it, she only brought it up in that moment. having watched this all, I'm in the thought process that Samus has emotions that are all entirely justified and makes her that much more of a real character.
the main reason the prime games are so "lockon and shoot" is because the game tells the story more through what you read and see not so much what you do thats probably the reason alot of people hate it cause there too lazy to stop and read the logs and scan areas
Thats the essence of a real Metroid game(just like the first ones where the story was told by game guide or some stuff like that) , that is something that Other M couldnt achieve. Personally ,I think other M was a kick in the balls to the Metroid fan community.

Tbh, Other M gameplay's ain't bad...sure ,it aint what u expect from a 3D Metroid but its decent enough...the rest though...
whoa.. I haven't played a single metroid game since NES and only a little bit, so i thought i'd check out some movie clips. This was not just Theater mode, this was amazing. I always have a thing for cheesy movies, and this had so much in it that i could possibly watch it multiple times. Thanks

Had the writers ever heard of show don't tell?! The one thing Metroid is known for in storytelling?! And instead they give endless monotone monologues that include such gems as this?!

According to some people ,prime games are canon and to others it's not. In an interview sakamoto said prime games are canon but then in an massage board I read that they are not canon so you can count prime games out of the main timeline cuz Nintendo confirmed this much that other m is 100% canon in the official timeline.

***** Ok. First of all, did you even play any of the Metroid games besides Fusion? like Super Metroid? if you did, then you would have a clue as to where this fits chronologically. And second, the voice actor for Samus was told to be emotionless. Also, this was when Adam was still alive, so wouldn't that right there send a message to your brain that this came before Fusion? or did you not play that one either? I'd hate to be rough right now, but honestly, play Super Metroid, Other M, then Metroid Fusion in that order and you'll think twice about it. People just aren't appreciative with what they are given and to the people that develop video games. This game had to have been given some thought story-wise. They wanted to try something different and make it more interactive than Metroid Fusion. Those who haven't played Super Metroid wouldn't know who Phantoon is. In Metroid and Metroid II, (idk which one) but a Metroid Queen was being developed. They brought her back in Other M, along with Nightmare, in turn was obviously before the Federation took his remains and rebuilt him. Ridley's corpse was also preserved in a sub-zero temp chamber for further study, but the X copied their essences. As a result, Ridley and Nightmare were just mindless killing machines.
I kinda wish Metroid: Other M was actually a B-Movie, not a videogame.

+Henrique Tavares I know this post is a year old but I gotta say, there are no rules that games must be chronologically made to follow a timeline. Same goes for movies, for example, the Star Wars prequels! Having said that, this story/game follows a few months (maybe more, Samus mentions it in the intro) after the events in Metroid 3 (AKA Super Metroid)
+Matt Wilson Oh, but I didn't mean chronologically. It was like... this game seems to have been made in the 90s, judging it aesthetically - the colors are saturated and the 3d feels like plastic. It doesn't appeal to me at all. Even the pixel version of the Super Metroid climax cinematic had managed to be way more cathartic and emotional than this cg version.

I don't get why people hate this game so much. It's a throwback. Unlike the Prime series. I think this game is great. It's very cutscene heavy, but I like it. I think it shows Samus' character and personality more than the other games.

I like other M, for someone who grew up with the nes and snes Games, it has much much more of the classic metroid feel to it than these metroid called ego-shooter! And it is Great to see Samus as more as a bountyhunter...! Samus is a human and as sich, not just a stupid machine. Neh, sad that the prime Series reduced it to an Ego-shooter...
Not that much effort put in here, thanks to theater mode, and I see the brawl parts isn't fully to the sides..I'll have to fix that for when I do Subspace Emissary .

Samus talking was something i looked forward to, the different gameplay looked good back in the trailers, but this is just everything a metroid game isnt. +Andres Acosta I would say the gameplay is the best modern adaption of the series. and story is kind of rubbish. whilst its easy to write off that samus didn't have a character until this point, really her actions in the previous games gave her character, that why people got so mad. because the words and way she acts in this game contradict the way she (the player) is made to act through the other games. (that and the japanese character archetypes they are using don't translate well to english dub, or western sensibilities)

The story of Other M breaks so many basic rules of good storytelling. I felt like I was watching the first draft of an amateur author, who had never written anything before. It was good to finally see the whole story of Other M to judge for myself, but this story fails on every level.

I dont get why everyone wants to ban wagon hate on this game. It was a great blend of the 2d side scroller and 3d game. Best of all it had more action than all other metroid games combind. I absolutely love the prime games but 90 percent of the time you are just walking and looking at things. When you finally fight, you just literally circling.
Other M was an amazing action pack 2d 3d metroid game.
metroid isn't about action, its about exploration and atmosphere. it slowly paces itself and treats its worlds with a sense of aw and mystery, with detail in every single pixel/polygon. the system of picking up new items to explore new environments that were previously inaccessible told you more about the world you were in than any dialogue box could ever attempt to convey. the lack of information, especially in super for instance, really forced you to learn every little nook and cranny the games had to offer. that's what made metroid so memorable and immersive, and what separates it from the rest of its copycats, e.g. castlevania
other m on the other hand is a mindless, linear as fuck button mashing mess. all items are accessible from the start yet you can only use them at predetermined areas for some stupidly contrived bullshit reason. the 2D sections were unnecessary. being stuck in place while in first person was annoying. being stuck with the D-pad to move around in 3rd person made the whole experience more frustrating than its worth. you spend the majority of the game dashing through a bunch of wannabe Mario levels. hell, most of its assets are just rehash's of older games. it brings nothing new to the table and tries to rope people with its constant leeching of other games.
the less we talk about the story, the better.
msgsgt its the story & progression of other m that makes it horrible. samus' character is not like this. she never bitched about any of these characters, she was never gloomy or submissive like this, & never needed "authorization" from anyone to use her weapons. this was a bullshit storyline

Nope, I reject any dialog, content, or acknowledgment of Other M. It was a fail, and not a true depiction of Samus. Fuck Other M. I grew up on with NES, I own, and played every game.

Aside from the 3rd person perspective, it's not much of a throwback. Prime and Super Metroid are close in essence than Other M will ever be to other metroid games. The fact that it's story driven makes it very linear with little chances to explore. And for a Metroid game centered around a story, well it was pretty weak to say the least(not to mention that it kicked trilogy out of the timeline, when each game of that set is better than other M. The gameplay was ok, but paled compared to the rest.

Blame Sakamoto, not only is he responsible for the story and directing the voice acting, he also handicapped Team Ninja by forcing them to design the gameplay around a WiiMote-only control scheme.
