    If you prefer watching the cutscenes-only version, watch it here! th-cam.com/video/PWAl3SUruyQ/w-d-xo.html
    We had a blast playing this game. It took us back to our Super Metroid playing days. We hope you enjoy the video and also have a great day. Thanks for watching.
    Metroid: Other M takes place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. After awakening in a Galactic Federation facility, Samus Aran departs for space and picks up a distress signal from a derelict vessel known as the "Bottle Ship". Soon after landing, Samus encounters the Galactic Federation 07th Platoon; among the Platoon are Anthony Higgs, an old friend from her military career, and her commanding officer Adam Malkovich. After Samus saves the platoon from monsters, Adam allows Samus to cooperate in their mission, under the condition that she follow his orders. Samus and the 07th Platoon head to the Exam Center in the Biosphere, and learn that the Bottle Ship was conducting research on bioweapons and the person in charge of the project was Dr. Madeline Bergman.

    The part at 2:00:00 is a great example of how I would want Samus to speak in future games. Very minimal and empathetic. This scene is entirely how I think Samus would be if she was a real person. Especially the “may I come closer?” Part. This is my favorite scene in the game.

We see her use this tone of voice just once, not in english but in what could be considered her secondary native language considering she spent most of her early life with the Chozo

      she voluntarily answered a distress signal sent to her by the military operated by the galactic federation whose laws she is indeed bound by and then agreed to be of assistance in their military sanctioned mission on a galactic federation owned vessel. while she often does indeed do what she wants, she is somewhat limited here because she has a working relationship with the galactic federation because they are her most prominent client.

      Almost every mission that takes place in Metroid games begins with "So the Federation hired me to-" implying that Samus gets a ton of contracts through them. Not only is it a bad idea to deliberately disobey a military officer in that situation, it would be career suicide. It's probably not a preferable situation; she left the GFP so she wouldn't ever have to follow an order she disagreed with again, but her only other real option in that situation would have been to turn around and leave if she didn't like it.

      @@ChillstoneBlakeBlast i can agree with a few of those, but Samus is not a machine. She has thoughts and emotions, and considering the events that happened and all her past, PTSD makes a ton of sense for her to develop. Im suprised this was the only game that focused on that aspect tbh. She had to witness so much death and agony throughout her life, starting as she was a child even. Its horrible, and to me this game finally made that somewhat apperant.

    • @yosshy4774
      @yosshy4774 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@ChillstoneBlakeBlast No real items to gain. The story happens in a Galactic Federation space lab not in a Chozo planet. It would have been attrocious writting if Samus would have to found the screw attack hidden in the ship to be honest. Extreme linearity. Other M is practically the same plot as Fusion. Is fusion extreme linear? For the PTSD mess, I think that is a great touch to the story. That makes Samus a real character. They just told you how Samus felt after fighting Mother Brain in Super Metroid (nearly dying) and wondering about things as any human would do. I mean, She is living in space all by herself, I think that was genius writting. Fusion reflects that when she is speaking to herself, and Other M protrays that perfectly. As for DABABY, if you remember at the end of Super Metroid, that baby saved her life. Wouldn't you be at least greatful enough for that? Wondering why "that thing" made that sacrifice? There is clearly a bond between them, and that is perfect writting in my opinion. I understand you wanted another Prime game, and I respect your opinion as you clearly have your reasons. But I truly do not see anything bad with this game.

    • @builderbosc
      @builderbosc ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I mean, yeah, but why not make this a prequel, before the first game, if anything? Its not like being confident and quick to action ISNT and even then It’s already kinda too late to take a character like Samus and make her InsEcURe when she had already blown up two planets and had almost caused the extinction of a race. Also, kinda hard to make a character emotional when they speak like a robot. I get what you want out of Samus though, and became of that I would really recommend Metroid fusion. It may be a tiny bit more linear, but it uses that to its fullest potential by exploring a story of Samus being more vulnerable than ever and seeing how see grows without messing up the previous ideas of her character. Plots also way better than other m, even though other m was made as a predecessor to fusion.Again, would recommend!

      The dodge mechanic can literally just be mashed for infinite I-frames, it has no skill or timing involved.
      The first person mode and energy recharging mechanic are stupid.
      The world has no exploration to it, which goes against the entire crux of what the "search action" genre is supposed to be.
      The Where's Waldo segments that force you to stand still and spy out an innocuous poop stain on the ground and slow, over-the-shoulder walking segments are fucking stupid too
      The gameplay of this game isn't anywhere near as acceptable as people make it out to be but on paper it still has potential, a Metroid game with proper character-action style gameplay that doesn't suck dick could be cool.

    See, to a Metroid lore nerd like me, this is where the game’s story starts to derail.
    The manga had already been out for sometime by now and there’s really no excuse for why they didn’t delve into Samus’ history and what exactly this moment *should* mean to her. She describes announcing the successful completion of this mission was “simple” and “almost dull”, which in itself isn’t a bad thing, she’s always been a business first character. But what follows is the delegation cheering for the extermination of her home.
    Yes, they’re relieved that they’re finally safe from Mother Brain and the Pirates and even Samus would recognize that, but in this moment, she’s completely alone.
    Her mission is complete, her parents are avenged and her promise to the Chozo has been fulfilled and upheld. And she has nothing to show for it and no one to comfort her.
    She’s brought peace to the galaxy but where does she go from here? What use is a warrior in a world that no longer needs them?

    This one is probably my favorite Metroid game story and gameplay wise. That’s just me though. It fits my preference of gameplay and storytelling is all. For me I prefer games that have a good blend of Movie and Play.
    It may not be what many people liked, but I enjoyed seeing Samus speak for herself instead of being silent. I enjoyed the fact that even though many people found her plain, she at least had a personality this time. She had her own thoughts on opinions on matters. It was nice to be in her head for awhile and not just behind her visor. I also liked getting a better outlook at her time in the Federation and seeing how Adams does things also kind of explains why Samus is the way she is sometimes. She looked up to Adam as a father figure and even emulates his serious stoic manners sometimes. Especially in past games. Also as a military man myself I couldn’t help but make constant comparisons between my experiences with commanding officers and how Adam did things. For one he addressed all subordinates by first name, which typically doesn’t happen in the Military as I know it. We’re called by our ranks/rates and/or our last names. Secondly while some commanding officers are closer than others to their subordinates we refrain from personal relationships for a variety of reasons. For one it could be considered fraternization which is punishable under the UCMJ. Secondly it promotes favoritism and sometimes nepotism in the division which hinders judgement and can promote hostility between members. It’s very frowned upon IRL. Despite these negative qualities Adam was still able to reach commander at a young age, which can either be a testament to his own individual merit but simultaneously mark out some weaknesses in the Galactic Federations ethics and their own Uniform Code. I was also surprised to learn that among his subordinates was Ian his younger brother. Which in the Navy hasn’t been a thing since the Solomon Brothers died together at sea. Since then siblings, spouses, and relatives in general were kept apart at commands. While Adam may be a flawed character, through him we’re also given an idea of what standards the GF operate on as a military force and while the things I listed were negative, I was still intrigued by those differences. Similarities too. Like having permission to use certain equipment for environmental reasons. It maybe carried out differently IRL, but operations wise it is an important thing that is taken into consideration. Especially during training, maintaining positive public relations, and safety most importantly.
    Anthony Higgs I think is an awesome addition because up til now I didn’t even know Samus had any friends. That are still alive I mean. His personality I think compensates for everything Samus lacks as a character. He’s also an enigma in his own right. If he shows up in a possible Metroid Prime 4 with an even bigger role, I wouldn’t be surprised.
    This game also kind of changes how I see Metroids. Not merely as good or evil or even as just monsters, but as simple animals doing whatever they need to survive and thrive. Through the Metroids I also got a look at how lonely Samus life actually is that she would form attachments to one of the very beings she was sent out to destroy.
    Seeing Ridley at varying stages of his lifespan was intriguing too. After seeing him die and come back over and over it was quite a sight to see him doing that literally instead of just learning about it through logs. Though he did end up dying again, there is no doubt he’ll be back through some kind of mad BS.
    MB I think could have been written better. I know about Mother Brain from the manga, but MB in this game, while I did find her interesting I also saw her as a failure. I get that she is supposed to be Mother Brain, but I still couldn’t help but see MB as a separate person who was just modeled after Mother Brain. Which isn’t bad, but it does defeat the idea. Nowhere did I feel like she was a stand in for the original big bad. In simple terms, Mother Brain was a psychopath and MB was a sociopath. The difference between them being that the Latter had emotions and the former did not. If anything I’d say MB was pretty much a fusion between Samus and Mother Brain. Which kind of makes sense.
    As the AI that oversaw her own genetic modification under the supervision of the Chozo, Mother Brain herself is a kind of parent to Samus. In a round about way that kind of makes MB like a sister to Samus.
    This game also makes me wonder about characters from other games like Sylux and the traitor at the end of Federation Troopers. This is the only game in particular in which I’ve seen the GF go completely against their usual moral ethics that I’ve seen in other games. And it helps me make a list of suspects for who Sylux might be. My biggest primary suspect is Anthony Higgs. One of 3 survivors of the Bottleship incident. While he does appear to be a friend in Other M there’s no telling how much has changed over the years. Higgs isn’t around in Fusion or the Prime games. In other words he likely went his own way. Or maybe perhaps he’s the Federation trooper who stole the Metroid in the GF game as well as the suit and became Sylux. He has plenty of motive. Samus leaving the way she did was a form of betrayal. Although he puts on a smile and charming demeanor I can’t shake the feeling his own emotions were stirred by her presence. They were close friends after all. And even after all that drama Samus still associated with the GF. The later Power Suit models resembling Samus own power suit is proof of that. The Federation betrayed Company 7 and left Samus and Higgs as the only survivors. Then Samus continues to associate with the very organization that stabbed them in the back and killed their beloved leader. I can easily see that turning a kind man mad. Mad enough to hate a friend who’s only crime is by association. The second suspect is Ian Malkovich. Although he should have died then, I can’t help but wonder what if he survived. Ian Malkovich a man abandoned by his brother who would later be named as overseer of secret projects like the Bottle Ship. Who would later lose his brother because of the greed of the Federation. If he somehow survived at all by any chance he would have more reasons than anybody to hate the Federation and by extension Samus who he could probably guess allowed his brother to die. Though all this is just speculation on my part. Make for a good story though I bet for Sylux to be one of those two close friends.
    All in all I had fun. I think later I’ll check out Metroid Fusion which supposedly takes place next in the chronology of this series.

      @thorscape3879 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel very similarly. It's a good character study on Samus and an expansion and explanation of her universe which was Sakamoto's goal.
      I do have a correction. Ridley has only ever died once and that was in Super. His defeat in Metroid was not his death. He instead became Meta-Ridley as seen in Prime 1 and 3. His appearance in Fusion was actually an X making it a fake.
      The fact that he was alive after very clearly dying and his corpse being frozen at the BSL Research Station is what makes his successful reincarnation so important.

    I feel like this and Fusion are a duology that really need remakes for the writing alone. While I personally find the stories to be good overall,(This game less than Fusion, but I will get there) it clearly just lacks polish. For example 6:30. All distress-signals are supposed to draw attention, they clearly only wrote that line to have an excuse to say "Baby" a few times. These siturations exist on both games and honestly just need a rewrite or two.
    Now onto the Other M-exclusive issues(Spoilers for the game/video):
    -Adam.
    No really, this guy and the stuff around him is the worst part of this thing. In Fusion, Samus calls him harsh but fair and says that he was a person she could trust, even if he preffered to stick to the protocol. This is not that man, despite what the backstory claims.
    [Actually about the backstory, the potential to do this better already exists. "This bit contrasted with the manga, where Adam if anything suggested Samus leave the military specifically because it hampered her potential."(as the wiki says) This was appearently changed to put in japanese values into the game, but they really did not belong here.
    It really could have put the melodrama of the game into perspective if their relationship went down like this: After the "big event", Adam suggests that Samus leaves the Federation Forces. Being immature, she is just angry as she goes because she sees this as a betrayal and that he does not trust her anymore. During the events of the game, she still does not understand the reason but knows that it had to have been another reason.(You know, showing maturity about the situration) And she is as compliant as she is during the mission because she thinks she needs to make up for her reaction back then. Right before Adam goes into Sector 0, he could make clear that the reason he suggested her leaving was because reason above.]
    Except for the moment where he sacrifices himself, his nonsense is just kinda dumb. Right away, he almost seems antagonistic. Sure, someone not called in is not supposed to storm in, but why did we need an "Adam, plz" followed by a surprise monster to get him to jump on the idea. I just feel like a better conversation between them could have been placed here.
    And his authorization sometimes just makes no sense. I know he told her to not do anything without his command, but the developers did not have to take it so literally. Sector 3 should not have started with him mentioning her current authorizations. Infact, right about 47:27, he should have told her something like "What are you doing!? Your vitals are still dropping, activate the Varia Suit!" to not make it sound like he actively wanted her to get hurt for a while.
    At 1:02:10, it would make more sense in my eyes if Samus actively did this without being told first and then Adam authorizes the Grapple for the rest of the mission after this goes down.
    As a last point, Adam really should shoot the Metroid first and THEN immobilize Samus. Not the other way around.
    -The Deleter.
    Literally just don't. I don't mean get rid of the plotpoint(though it would be neat if Adam at least says something about it when it gets introduced), but I mean he shouldn't succeed in actually killing anyone. It would make more sense logically if his objective was to dispose of survivors first and people in the know second. Plus, it definitly works out interms of everything else too. MB does not need any other reason to distrust the Federation than her backstory revealed at the end of the game and People could just...die other ways. Maurice kinda could have been explained by him being ambushed by that random rogue metroid in the sector that is never mentioned again.
    -Samus' reaction to Ridley.
    We all know the issue, but they really could have done something with this. After her innitial reaction of fear, we could have had a short retrospective of events throughout the series with the endresult being that she just unlocks her full power(Minus Power Bombs) temporarily in rage and goes into the fight with all guns blazing(With a phase 1 where anthony fights with her and a phase 2 after he gets thrown off the plattform in a cutscene). She doesn't have more non-unlocked powers for this game except the gravity? Doesn't matter, give me the Wide Beam,(Which she had in the past, considering the text in fusions claims that it was "recovered".) turn the missiles into Ice Missiles. Turn the Super Missiles into the Ice Spreader. Just give me all that stuff! Though I can understand why they couldn't do any of this even if they wanted, because this game was running short of diskspace already. Anyone down for making a fanremake of this thing?
    -Ridley's Death.
    Samus should honestly just fight him a second time, just in a harder fight. Him being killed by another boss is just....very lame.

      @AndrevusWhitetail 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wholeheartedly agree with most of what you wrote.
      Here's my two cents on the matter :
      1. Autorization
      This COULD'VE been a whole lot better if we had a good reason or video-game circumstantiality to work with it. Instead of just handwave it away with "Samoos Ur Under mai commend nao, i tell u wat to unlock", they could've used the "all-pervasive comms system block" that the rest of Platoon 7 is under as a way to restrict Samus' suit powers, with "authorization" being Adam hacking the systems to bypass and allow Samus to turn her suit features back on. Instead of "We'll continue to evaluate authorizations as we go" they could've said "We'll continue to work on enabling your suit's features through the comm-block as we go", BAM, THERE, it wouldn't have been as invasive, and would've been a MUCH more plausible explanation for not having Samus' upgrades from the get go. Sure this might have caused issues with the "Any objections, Adam?" """"joke"""" Samus made when she 'self-authorized' Space Jump and Screw Attack, and Gravity "feature" later after Sector Zero was blasted, but even that could've been handwaved away with a simmilarly REASONABLE explanation...like have the comm block be made by the deleter, with it lifting once he's dead and Samus noticing how odd it is that it's just gone.
      Imagine if the hell-run Samus goes through before Adam calls in to "activate the varia feature of your suit" , would've been a "Samus, i've got Varia unlocked, turn it on ASAP", it would've made more sense.
      2. Ridley reaction.
      This whole thing is just a mess. Canonically speaking (If we count the remakes of games as the canonical versions) This would've been the 6th time Samus faces off against Ridley (1. Ridley in 1/Zero Mission, 2. Mecha-Ridley at the end of Zero Mission, 3. Proteus Ridley at the end of Samus Returns 3DS, 4. Ridley at Ceres Station in Super, 5. Ridley in Lower-Norfair in Super (Same Ridley, sure but still different battle) and 6. Here in Other M), Hell it's even MORE if we count the Prime Trilogy appearances, HOW in the holy mother of fuck is she getting PTSD of her home of K2-L being destroyed and her parents murdered infront of her eyes NOW of all times?
      (Side note : Wide beam "recovered" in Fusion is just the Spazer Beam from Metroid 2 and Super renamed. Samus' only true upgrade in this game that's not already a part of her kit is the Diffusion Beam she gets on this station. Gravity Suit being a purple cloud aura in this game is absolutely stupid though)
      3. Ridley's Death
      I know it sucks and it's lame, but it technically makes sense in a way. In Fusion we find the very same decayed husk of Ridley we find after he's offed by the Metroid queen on the BOTTLE SHIP on the Cryogenic Storage part of BSL. It's sad we don't get to turn Ridley into mush in this game, but at least it's not a plothole. In fact, it patches a pothole for Fusion, so let's at least give this game some semblance of merit.

      I think that it was that fact that she was shown to be a bit to sensitive than what was expected of her. Especially when she came face to face with Ridley for the first time in this game. I myself wasn’t exactly a fan of how that scene played out. I personally thought that an emotional response would have been appropriate but was more thinking cold fury and tunnel vision rather than what happened in game. Especially considering canonically she has “killed” Ridley several times. Then there’s the issue of using all her weapons and abilities. I understand that it was to prevent a lot of destruction and the risk of human life but not activating the varia suit when in the heat zone was just a dumb choice I doubt she would have made on her own.

    It's really unfortunate that this game garnered so much hate and criticism. Its pros far outweighed the cons. The visuals and designs were phenomenal, especially considering its console and era, and the dialogue was a genuine effort to humanize Samus and shift her from a near mindless blasting machine to a person capable of experiencing emotions despite her years of experience and expertise. I do agree that the psychological breakdown after seeing Ridley was a little much, however it was a brief moment of weakness that could surely have been overlooked. Additionally, to identify the overall narrative and her affection for Adam as a flaw is extremely narrow-minded. I thoroughly enjoyed this game. The fans' reaction was truly a shame, because they may never again attempt to add this level of depth to Samus as a character; a concern that, to me, was exacerbated by the fact that she had only ONE voice line and ZERO significant moments of reflection in Metroid Dread.

It was amazing hearing her talk and think. I agree her reaction to Ridley was to much. But I want to see this side of her again. I want a game were she speaks and talks and has more growth as a character. We aren’t on the snes and gba. We have the technology to flesh her out but like you said Nintendo might not do it because people don’t want to see the character grow and want a silent protagonist. Dread was good and people like that the only line she had was speaking chozo.

      @oooo.ale.oooooooo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xyoungdipsetx Actually even some Super Metroid fans and 2D fans in general enjoyed this game (I'm one of them), it's mostly the Prime fanbase that boycotted this game. This game shares many similarities with Fusion (Samus talking, taking orders and instructions by someone, game is more linear, ecc.), so it makes sense that this game was overly-hated by the Prime fanbase, and it shows, many of the """flaws""" this game has are present in Fusion, a 2D title. This clearly proves that this haters haven't even played Fusion, and actually don't care about the 2D saga in general. That makes a lot of sense if you think about it. Many Prime fans feared that this new interpretation of 3D Metroid could replace the Prime formula.

      Animated show and nothing else.
      Animated mostly because you'll never find an actress who can play Samus because she's too tall and good looking, and her physical prowess wouldn't look good in live-action. Don't believe me? Look at what's going on in the Halo show; random spots of really bad CGI that break the immersion immediately. A Metroid live-action would be loaded with CGI to the point where you would rarely even see an actual human.
      A show because Samus isn't a very well known character; they would need time to show her backstory from the death of her parents leading up to her Zero Mission. Also, a show would do better at pacing her missions into arcs; you could have a four part arc of Zero Mission that has her battle Kraid, then Ridley, then Mother Brain, and then the last one be her navigating Chozodia to complete the ritual to turn on the Full Powered Suit.

      Like honestly I’d say the biggest problem is how they tried to give a usually calm silent and strong character vulnerabilities and emotional turmoil. I see what they wanted to do right? Give Samus more character, but it wasn’t executed very well, she came off as over reliant on Adams approval, like she has all her power ups it’s just that she won’t use them until Adams approval (example: in the lava rooms she’s taking damage from the heat, yet won’t activate Varia suit to protect herself until Adam says so) and she also came off as too emotional for someone who has done and seen shit much worse than all of Other M yet freezes up when she sees Ridley for the thousandth time.
