The direction, camerawork and framing starting @ 2:55 is so subtle and purposeful, it's beautiful storytelling. Almost 20 seconds of zoom and pan to cross a distance of a few feet brings us into Tony's literal headspace @ 3:12. It's such a tight closeup that Mr. Gandolfini has to move the magazine out of the way of the camera in order for the shot to be achieved, successfully framing Silvio (Tony's literal adviser) so that he evokes the old image of the metaphorical angel/devil on the shoulder. Is Silvio playing the role of angel or devil in this instance? Just to hammer it all home, the exchange beginning @ 3:20 is one regarding a matter of ethics/morals/values, i.e. a matter of conscience. It's such damn good filmmaking.

This scene alone shows how unreasonable and hypocritcal the mafia is .Honestly it wasn't a big deal that Vito was gay. Who cares. The messed up thing is he wasn't honest with his wife. Vito didn't rat or betray them and he made them all rich and they turn their backs on him over some stupid tough guy act. Tony at least understood he brought them in money. I still think the "Its a sin" line is the funniest line in the entire show. "Its 2006; there's pillow biters in the special forces"
Tony Soprano is an insecure, angry, pyscopathic, horrible character but by this point in the show (after getting shot by uncle jun) you can see he is already changing how he looks at things and being more mindful and considerate. The character development on this show was excellent and seeing tony go from a guy who had knee-jerk reactions of anger and aggression, to a guy who did more thinking and contemplating than before was so satisfying.
Part of him didnt want to lose Vito because he really didnt care that Vito was gay and moreso because Vito was a high earner but he knew that he'd begin to lose the other men in the crew and good money if he kept Vito around.

    • @Dan-ys8nk

It wasn't only that. Tony also had to show that *HE* makes the decision on Vito, nobody else. So yeah you're dead on that as the Boss he also definitely needed to factor the money part. Because well, why the hell are they doing this? But he also needed to let his Family know that whether Vito lives or dies it was because he said so, not them. In Tony's mind it was a power play.
Then you have Silvio, as a great Consigliere, showing Tony the bigger picture. Yes he's the Boss, so what happens to Vito is his decision. But the same order of things he's trying to protect by affirming his power. He would lose if he didn't do what they wanted. So in the end Tony really had no options about what to with Vito. Especially with the outside actions of Leotardo.

@@TRivera13 I like your commentary on this scene. I have a question for you. Is Phil’s intervention in this, by killing Vito, a small win for Tony because he didn’t have to make the decision, or is it one of his big losses and contributing factors to the fate of his family in the last part of season six? I always felt like this moment led to his men losing more confidence in him as a leader and to keep them safe so ratting became an easy way out.

This is one of those moments where i think if tony had just listened to Silvio more, so much of the shows conflict could’ve been avoided

The way the camera kept Silvio out of focus when speaking with Tony was masterful direction.

I loved how they characterized Tony here. We’ve seen early in the show that he’s willing to give up his morality for money and power. But here we see that he’s also willing to slide on his own ethics/beliefs for the sake of money and power.

love the cunning of silvio here.he knows tony so the more anyone objects about vito the more he will stick his heels in just to prove hes boss so he doesnt mention the rights and wrongs.he knows how to manipilate tony so he picks up the fact it may hurt tonys pocket rather than any other reason.

Well he is right in this case, and he knows what angle could make Tony see, financial one.
Also, all the big bosses were sensitive about earning, it's the fucking thing they are doing.

When Silvio said, "take Paulie, you know perfectly well guys like him never kick up full percent" was so on point. Must be exhausting talking about principles and traditions when it boils down to money. With Tony especially cuz all he cares about is money

Carlo's line that "Some people feel its against our principles" really needs to become the next running Sopranos joke in the comment threads, especially given how developed the show's theme of all the major characters being massive hypocrites was.
