I love my fenix 6x but I'm short at 5"8, and it looks like I've strapped a wall clock on my wrist, so I think Id look like Rambo with the epix on my wrist

    • @Foyzur32
      @Foyzur32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I just received the epix and playing around with it. It's certainly a million times more vivid than my Fenix 6x pro, and it doesnt feel as solid, but that might not be a bad thing. I think at 5"8 this is the perfect size.
There is one problem... It's not particularly crisp. I would have expected to see a higher ppi in this day and age... That might be one tlof there way of optimising the battery. Doesn't feel worth £900 at all, but you'd expect a high price point from Garmin.
Anyway, I'm moaning before even going out for a run...

I went with the Epix - the screen is just too pretty and I'm not advanced enough to be running multi-day ultras anytime soon. But if they come out with a no-compromises version that has the Fenix 7X size and features with the Epix screen, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Tools can be pretty too!

DCRainmaker thinks, and I agree, that moving forward nearly every product Garmin makes will be going to an AMOLED screen and only niche watches like the Fenix to support mega big battery life will stay with the old tech. Within 1-2 years essentially everything will be AMOLED with just 1 or 2 speciality products using something else, so by then I bet the LTE Epix Gen 2 Plus will be out and maybe in multiple sizes Epix just like Fenix.

    • @mdtreasures6614
      @mdtreasures6614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Even if you did like a 5 day ultra, most of the time, you need fully charged unlocked cell phone as part of the kit you need to have on you, and they transport a bag for you to next stop. Just put the charger for watch in it as you probably already have a phone charger. So you can do any activity you want hard-core or not with epix.

I am coming from a 6X Pro Solar Titanium to the Epix2. Received it yesterday and I am LOVIN it.
I always said I wish Garmin would put OLED onto their Fenix line.
I am unconcerned with battery life as I am now use to charging so many devices either daily or every other day.

Mark, great comparison. The reality is you are a big guy and the 51mm 7x looks right sized on you but the 47mm 7/Epix is a LARGE watch still and i'd argue even for most men it might look better sized than the 7x. As for battery life the gulf between the 7 series and Epix is large but the 15 hours you quoted for multiband GPS is the full up every single GPS / GLONASS / multiband on and per DCRainmaker it makes next to no difference in accuracy, at least with the current firmware. If you use "just" GPS you get 30 hours (42 hours with screen not in always on mode) or with GPS + GLONASS (but not multiband) you get 24 hours (32 hours with screen not in always on mode). Those numbers at least for me are very good and make choosing the Epix over the Fenix for the screen worth it. Just something for everyone to be aware of. Your video was great, cheers!

Nice video Mark. I went with the Epix (haven't got it yet) but then I'm a heavyweight lightweight! I've had Garmin devices before (like hand-held GPS units) but this will be my first watch and I've been waiting for ages for the new gen of Fenix. I wanted integration mainly with my Edge and Varia stuff and my eyes are certainly not what they used to be. I also don't mind people laughing at me at 100k ultras as the only time I'll be at one is to spectate. Using Epix in gesture=mode will give me plenty of battery life I think, unless I hit a late-life crisis and start some IronMan foolishness.

I swapped from my garmin fenix 3 saphire hr years ago. They kept updating the software, after one update my battery life which had been fine, overnight just quartered. I read in forums this had happened to lots of users, I contacted the company who disagreed there had been any foul play despite the new model being out, but exchanged my watch which was at that point a couple of years old for factory refurbished replacement. The replacement now sits in a drawer unused and unloved because during the debacle I had switched to a skinny latte watch, specifically, a Huawei GT. Whilst I missed the chunkiness of my old watch I realised that my three children were surely proof enough of my manliness not to need a massive watch, sports car or pickup truck. I enjoyed the ease of use, better range of functions and longer battery time of my latte/smart watch. Plus smart watches are normally a lot, lot cheaper, not garmin or apple or samsung, but some are a lot cheaper. And most of them that are cheaper don't integrate with Strava, and the others that do tend to have dodgy HR sensors.....Oh no I am confused. I think I am with your wife, I mean metaphorically, I have my own after all, watch and wife. Keep the videos coming, you are becoming my number one youtube channel. Incidentally for objective comparisons I have found
    th-cam.com/users/TheQuantifiedScientist good.

Awesome review Mark! I had a Fenix 6 pro Sapphire before, and hesitated replacing with either Epix or the 7X. Finally got the 7X with no regrets for not having the Epix Amoled screen! I have a 7 inch wrist, and the 7X is actually more comfortable on my wrist than was the Fenix 6 pro, despite the larger 7X size, in fact it's thanks to it. Iit's bigger size makes it sit better on my wrist without swimming around an no need to tighten the strap. I can sleep with it on, whereas I couldn't with the smaller Fenix 6 pro. The 7X doesn't feel heavier than the 6 pro either. The bigger screen is a huge benefit for my poor eyesight and the flashlight is truly coming in handy - it's not just a gimmick. Watch face always visible makes it like a real watch too. Very happy with my choice. With the Epix I would have regretted the 7x size. With the 7x, I regret nothing. Just hope some of the apps I had before activate for the Fenix 7 series...

Great review Mark. I’ve gone through the Fenix 3, the Fenix 5X and now I have Fenix 6X and I have been loving the look and feel of it, as you well said it’s a great tool and it looks aggressive. I was considering the Epix but it simply doesn’t have the personality of any of my previous watches mentioned above. It has more of a feel like a Samsung smart watch which you will never see at the starting line of an endurance event. Fenix 7X it is 💪👊

I ended up taking the Epix even though I skipped the Fenix 6 waiting for the 7. I do at most 2-4 days of outback hiking for my longest time. People complain about battery life, and you always have to watch it before going out, but somehow charge their cell phone, go pro, Oura Ring, and whatever else before races or a long trip. I have a small battery pack so I can charge devices anyway, so what's another one... Besides 16 days on epix, it is plenty fine for what I do. If I do a small 10 mile run hell, I would hope it lasts an hour or 2 for any watch, even with always on. Plus, I like the maps, and better detail is super important for me, and it's 24/7 watch, so it's not just for a race or working out. I can definitely see a need for both, though. If I did the Appalachian Trail or something for sure, I would do fenix 7x, but that is just a dream for me now as I don't have 7 months to travel it.

I have the Felix seven, but I’m thinking about jumping over to the epix, because we do hiking the most I would be out there is three days usually and I have a small battery pack also because of GoPro. How is the Epix working for you and hiking do you have to charge it every single day and as a day through the day if you’re hiking. I have the Apple seven watch and you can’t really use that for hiking it’s dead halfway through the day if you do all trails mapping. Apple Watch will still be my every day watch because I’m so used to the ecosystem

It's finally time for me to upgrade from my Fenix 5 Sapphire (and by the way, the battery life after 4 years has hardly diminished), I already didn't think I can justify back then upgrading to the Fenix 6, but will now do a proper upgrade. I absolutely LOVE that Epix screen, but I do a lot of HIIT and running events (trail running up to marathon distances) - not quite a lot of multi days events though, so I'm absolutely on the fence but leaning towards the Fenix 7 Solar. I'm an electrical engineer and due to my profession, where I need to have my hands in tights spots regularly I find big watches a hassle, not to mention that a smaller watch I can also put it under my work gloves and give it an extra bit of protection. I'm glad they finally started using more of the real estate of the bigger face for the screen size. I have the Fenix 5X and shockingly found out after purchasing it that in spite of the chunkier watch and more face area, that the functional screen size was the same as the Fenix 5. .1 of an inch may not seem like a lot...but you can notice that space between the actual bezel and where the screen starts. Probably not enough to replace it just yet....but it will definitely be on my mind.

I want to go on hikes without a battery bank. I know it's pretty, I know I'll be jealous of the screen quality, but I don't think this is the model to get... yet. I’ve watched most of the review videos and now bought the Epix instead of the Fenix 7. Yes, I know as a fairly small woman it’s large in comparison to my fenix 6s, in fact it’s bloody big and I’ll probably get some sarcastic comments from work colleagues but - and it’s a big but - the screen is superb and for me it’s absolutely worth sacrificing the advanced battery life of the fenix 7. The Epix is simply a thing of beauty so crisp and sharp and for someone like me that does 3/4 runs a week, averaging 20/25 miles a week the battery life is absolutely sufficient. So if you prefer a sharper more vibrant screen this is the one to go for 👍

Great video. I had Fenix 5x, then 6x, now I bought Epix 2. But I sold it after a few days and came back to Fenix 6x. The problem is, if you like big watches - and I liked Fenix 6x much mainly due to its size - the smaller watches feel like babies. You simply jus do not feel comfortable with that watch. Feels like a plastic toy... It's a great watch with great screen - I would even say 'epic" screen. Great battery life - same as my Fenix 6x. But in real world usage, this does not anything more, than nice look. I use Fenix both for sport and hiking (for mapping as backup for GPS Map 66s) - you really do not get any advantage in comparison to Fenix 7x. Maps looks nicer, but they're made for use with just 64 colors. KMZ maps - yo do not get any screen resolution advantage on a small screen, usability is the same, although they look much nicer on Epix. I will buy Fenix 7x mainly due to touch screen (it makes BIG difference in usability when hiking). I totally agree, that you got to feel it's right... But if Garmin will sell Epix with a size of Fenix 7x - that would be choice for those, who like big watches...

If Garmin starts naming watches after 80s awesome television shows like AirWolf, they’d have all of my money. 💰
Great review! I’m struggling with this decision. I actually think the flashlight is going to be helpful but I don’t think I’d go for the larger watch, my wrists are slimmer than a 9 year track star who skipped breakfast and I tend to knock big watches into stuff if they’re too big.
I understand that people love AMOLED but I sometimes find them annoyingly bright. Particularly at night. I might pick up both of them and return one. 😬 Thanks again for all of your work!

    Your Level:
    ‼️💥💥Arnold-Magnificent💥💥‼️ my friend.
I have been agonizing over the last couple of weeks going from Fenix 6 X to Fenix 7X and now I have a Epix on order, arriving soon. I get all of your points. Will compare side by side.
A major problem here in the states is that the stores carrying these products, carry dummy products-without any guts inside, it so you can’t tell.
Issues for me: Epix battery (decline over time), and lowered ability to see (age 61 eyes, can’t read F7 maps indoors).
I will wear 99% of the day for the sensor monitoring in addition to tracking walking and stepper (marathon days are over). Lastly, will the amoled wash out in strong Arizona sunlight.
My decision until Epix comes in is 50-50 for now. Further, not whacking my woman in her back night wFenix7 is important too, as you pointed out (Epix has smaller form factor).
    Happy New Year🇺🇸‼️💥

But I cracked today and ordered the 7X - it looks so good! Also, broadly the same size as my Fenix 3 so I'm hoping my wife doesn't notice. "You've spent HOW much...!?". I think the Epix is Garmin's attempt to pull iWatch customer's away from Apple. It's a nice looking smart watch for people who just do the odd weekly gym sessions rather than full on endurance etc. The Fenix is a smart FITNESS watch, the Epix is a SMART fitness watch. My wife has an iWatch and the fitness tracking is pretty poor in terms of useful metrics, so it could actually work.

@@POLPO_WOOD having owned the epix for a few months now, I can say I never missed my fenix even once. Outdoor readability and maps are so much better on the epix. My fenix is just collecting dust. There is nothing "not sturdy" about the epix. It's just as rugged as the fenix.

Funny about the feel, because I got Fenix 6 over any other sports/smartwatch exactly for their ruggedness. Sure, I'm not ... well any kind of athlete really, but still I want my functional gear to be functional and not worry about it while I wear it. Epix is by all accounts just as rugged as the Fenix and I would totally take it to fly AirWolf. Because if anything, I expect the AMOLED to be much better readable at a glance. That would really be my only complaint about F6, while riding a bike it can be a bit hard to read it just by taking a quick glance, without taking my hand off the bars.

Nice video! I used to have fenix 6 pro. I bought the epix first. Loved the display for a couple of days. Hated from first week that I got into "how much battery do I have" mode just a couple of days after chargin and going out for a couple of activities. I had never cared about battery with the 6 until it gave me the warning. (Battery might still last another 3 days when I got into this mode, but I dont care what the battery did. I care that I was worried about it since day 3 after charge. Same when leaving for the weekend "Ok, its not 20% only, but will it last until I come back? What if I decide to stay for one more day?. Better throw it on the charger even though it is 50%). This and the fact that I got the feel I was having more of a small phone/gadget than a watch on my hand, had me last 3 weeks before I went into the shop to buy a 7x. Wore it for couple of days, to see what I feel best on my hand, and epix never got on my wrist again. It is already for sale. Oh, and having a decent flashlight, always with you and always charged, has been a surprisingly useful thing. Never cared to have one, but now thinking "how is it possible not almost every g-shock has that already for years now?". Fenix looks and feels like a watch and tool for me. Epix looks and feels better than a smartwatch, but still like a smartwatch, phone, tv - whatever , on my hand. Amoled , though nice , I find cartoonish for a watch any watch, and the furthest thing from classic and classy. Only thing I miss the epix screen for is the maps. Definitely maps are better there not because they look nicer, but because they are more easy to use/view. For me going from mechanical or quartz watch would work for years without charger to watch that I have to care that much about battery is like travelling to the past rather than walking into the future. And the tools, how good are they , if you are worrying they might not be there on that one time you need them most? I could keep the epix for night activities in the city, if I could afford to keep both, and definitely take the fenix with me every time I am to leave the city borders. IfnI have to keep one of the 2, it is the fenix hands down

Very entertaining review. Thumbs up from me. Reassured me as ordered the 7x but getting older now, sights not as good and not sure whether I should have gone for the Epix 2 and do not want to make the wrong choice with what these cost. But I do think battery life is sometimes underrated. If you have to plug it in when you want to do sports those metrics are missed. While non-sports related I also like that the fenix 7 has a true always on display without having to keep flicking your wrist. I am buying it for sports but do not intend wearing a second watch.
