    You had two different leaks, which is obvious when you think about it. The small staining on the ceilings downstairs that had been there for a couple of months was fresh water leaking from the shower pump, which would likely have slowly got worse as the leaky pump worsened. The 4" soil pipe has a fracture in the upper part of the pipe somewhere, so it only leaks when the pipe is full (when there's a blockage). That's why when you cleared the blockage and subsequently looked under the airing cupboard floor, the wall had dried out. So unfortunately the larger staining on the ceiling was caused by foul water, and if it was me I'd replace that section of plasterboard. As a side note, the face seals in those pumps rely on polished ceramic and carbon bearing surfaces pushed together to form the seal by the strong spring that was apparent when you removed the circlip. They are cooled by the water in the pump, and usually fail when the pump has been run dry at some point, as they very quickly overheat, frequently melting the plastic housing that holds the ceramic part, allowing it to move out of true.

    Fantastic fix. You don't mention the repair duration, but with a family needing to use the water, timely plumbing repairs are essential. I do minor fixes, but good plumbers are worth their weight in gold.

    I had same issue. On 3rd pump (in 10 years) I installed a drainpan with a water sensing switch. Pump doesn't work if water detected. So I know if my shower won't turn on, there's an issue that needs dad's attention 😊

    When you put the new pump back in you should put a drain pan under the pump so you will see in the future if it leaks again saving your ceiling.

    Another brilliant addictive video, thank you. So glad it turned out not to be black water staining. However, rewind to 8:26, look at the copper pipe that goes round the corner of the walls, see the green crustiness on the pipe? That's possibly another slight leak. Sandpaper the stain away and keep your eye on it.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I noticed that whilst editing. I think it was from the old boiler leaking onto it or maybe some flux dripped onto it from some soldering on the pipework above. I need to clean it in case it eats through. Thanks for pointing it out 👍👍

    Good choice replacing that pump, the rusty shaft would never hold water reliably. As someone else commented, a pan under the pump might be good improvement, as you'd see the leak before it ruins your roof again.

      That's a good idea, though also good to have a pan / tray that has a drain pipe connected to the drain or outside so if it does fill up the water has somewhere to go.

    Amazing! I would have hired a plumber for sure, who probably would've cut into the ceiling anyway. That was such an interesting coincidence that when you cleared the clog in the toilet that you also had additional water showing on the ceiling. I would've thought the exact same thing. Way to go!

    Hello Vince when working on electric always remove the fuse and put it in your pocket.. it doesn't matter whether you isolate the wires or not.
    If you use a builders rubble bag to catch the water. Its is flexible and easy to get under and behind the pipes. Just make sure it is not one with the little holes in the bottom lol

  • @ants9230
    @ants9230 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    It's a good idea to puch a small hole in the ceiling if you have a leak, to allow the water to drain. It stops the water pooling and spreading across the ceiling. It's much easier to fill a small hole than it is to replace a sagging ceiling.

  • @adelestevens
    @adelestevens ปีที่แล้ว +46

    You should always try to ensure your pump is level so that additional pressure isn't applied to the motor shaft seal.
    Mount the pump on a levelled board next to that tank.

    • @EsotericArctos
      @EsotericArctos ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pump being level is a good idea, but not so much for stress on the motor shaft, as for reducing noise and having more consistency of pressure. Having the pump at an angle is not really going to make any difference to the load on the shaft as there are bearings at each end of the shaft, holding it securely with even stress on each end. That said, pressure is likely not going to be an issue with this install as the pump is below the water level, so there is very little head height to take into considereation, other than the resistance of the pipes themselves.
      The pump is really quiet, but can be even quieter with a proper pad underneath it and level.

    Hi Vince love the videos. Sorry I am a bit late with this advice regarding the blocked toilet from previous video. I spotted something in this video that in my experience probably caused or contributed to it. By your toilet I saw a packet of wet wipes, these cause thousands of blockages. I live in a sheltered housing area (lots of bungalows for OAP'S) and we get at least 2 drain blockages a year. The cause is always these wipes as they are plastic based not paper, they can easily snag on a join or something and just tend to stretch across the pipework and cause the blockage. We have lots of carers visiting people here and they tend to use wet wipes and flush them. Having talked to council workers who attend to clear blockages they say in our district alone they cause hundreds of blocks a year. They always say don't use them and if you must, bin them don't flush. The council even sent a letter to all residents advising of the problem and associated cost. Hope you get this and it helps avoid any future issues.

    Hi Vince, you usually find it is the hot water side that failed, just like a washer on a tap, it is very rare for the cold washer to fail unless over tightened. but due to the heat on the hot water then the seals heat up, and aren't able to cool off. if you want your new pump to last longer consider turning down the hot water temperature by a few degrees. while costs pennies to heat up the water compared to having scorching hot water and cooling it with the cold water for things like washing machine, shower etc. it will save money on replacing parts in the long term.

    Nice job and glad it was a better result than you were expecting. Had it been toilet waste, the odour in your cylinder cupboard would have been quite noticable. btw like the belts and braces approach covering the supply leads, but would have removed the fuse in the switched spur as well.

    It is not asbestos. When he built that onsuite dad had all the asbestos boards removed and replaced. I can sort of rember what dad did with the waste and vent pipes. However I do know that the shower and basin wastes do not join up directly with the toilet wastes. They do not meet up till the soil stack in the corner of the bathroom and kitchen. IF you ever need to drain the system down there are drain cocks for the HWS, CWS and HTG in the garage all over the soakaway.

    Hi Vince I had exactly the same issue but the seal on the pump housing failed, we had a lot of water escape when the pump was running, the water came through the ceiling and saturated the walls. After that I made some water alarms that modified cheap pound shop door alarms after searching the net for ideas and came across the build on cnet. They have saved me on many occasions after they sounded due to small leaks in the loft which were caught early enough.

    One of the best things I have is a wet and dry shop vac. Be it emptying blocked sinks, removing radiators etc. it is great. On a pump or radiator putting the Nozzle close to the nut as you undo it it will suck up all the water and avoid the mess. (I also use it for draining the pond once the normal submersible is below the pump level). It will even suck water out of a carpet.

  • @RobTaylor-HiTech

    Have a bit of experience with these type of pumps. The seal with the problem is generally a ceramic seal or bushing. It is usually the first item to fail in most pumps and generally is caused by the pump running dry for a period of time. So this may have been caused at some point if the water was shut-off and the pump still engaged. Once failed the drips start and its a quick road down hill. Quickly the bearings fail and often those in the motor as well since moisture gets where it should not. If caught quickly, before moisture can get into the pump motor it's a simple fix. But in your case you don't know how long or if the bearings were effected. So short of replacing bearings in the motor, a full pump replacement may be called for. To prevent this in the future, I would get a pressure switch on the input to prevent the pump from activating if the input is shut off. This will prevent bearing failure should hot or cold lines be shut off.

    Well done. Personally, I would also replace the pan connector (as I think it was disturbed) as soon as possible. It seemed (to me, and possible incorrectly) from the previous video that the large stain appeared within a short space of time, whereas a relatively slow leaking shower pump would have produced the smaller initial stains over a longer period of time. Or, it may be just be video shenanigans.

    • @anthonycomeaux1804
      @anthonycomeaux1804 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what he figured happened was that the sudden, large amount of stain that appeared after he was messing around with everything, including the pump in the closet and the mat under it. So he thinks he either sloshed or tilted it enough that he poured standing/pooled water onto the ceiling

  • @EsotericArctos
    @EsotericArctos ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Definitely a good move to replace the entire pump. A service kit may fix the old one short term, and maybe good as a backup pump, but the rusted shaft would definitely tear up a new seal very quickly, and even if you did manage to clean it, the sealing surface would be far from perfect. If you wanted to fix up the old pump as an emergency spare, that could work, but definitely not for long term service.
    I think this has been mentioned in another comment, but a solid pad, whether it be solid would or some kind of thick, stronger tile, with some foam padding would make the pump even quieter. It won't really do much for increasing the life span of the pump, as the bearings on each end of the shaft are what holds the shaft stable, and the pump, other than noise and consistency of flow, doesn't really care about the angel it sits too much, but it could make it even quieter for you.

  • @caskwith

I repaired one of the competitors pumps recently and was only able to get the parts off them directly because I'm a repair technician, they will not sell any parts to the public.

    Honestly Vince, you should have just replaced the seals on both sides and it would have been brand new! I Perhaps there is a heavy duty seal that exist??? In my domain (hot tubs electronics and motors) there are standard seals and Robust Carbide seals that can withstand more harsh water.
    The rust on the shaft, from what I could see, wasn't in a critical place so you would have been fine just replacing the seal. The mating surfaces are not directly on the shaft but the whitish part pressed in the casing and the black one behind the spring.
    Anyways, as always, I just love your videos and watch them as soon as they come out!

    Stuart & Turner pumps were so reliable, how old was the failed pump? £364 tells you it should be good quality I wonder where they are 'made' now

    So showers need a pump in the UK? Mains water doesn't have enough pressure?

    • @dlarge6502
      @dlarge6502 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the property and if you want a "power shower" to blow your skin off.
      By using a pump you can use the water in the hot water cylinder too.

      @@dlarge6502 I'm even more confused now. Without a pump there would be no hot water? 😳
      UK plumbing is weird to me.

    • @dlarge6502

      @@jeremiefaucher-goulet3365No. Hot water is pushed out of the cylinder by cold water from a tank in the loft, a gravity fed system. The tank in the loft is filled up from the mains via a ball valve.
      If you want to use the HW in the cylinder for a shower and you don't have a pump you have only the gravity fed flow, which is quite slow. I spent nearly a year using my HW for a shower after my usual electric shower broke. I had to manually mix the mains cold water with the HW from the cylinder to get the right temperature (separate hot and cold taps), that was very hard due to the massive pressure difference. The resulting flow through the shower head was pathetic. I eventually got fed up enough to learn what I needed to do to fit a replacement shower which I'm so glad I did.
      That's why there is a pump here as Vince needs it to pump the HW for the shower so that it can effectively be mixed with the mains fed cold water. It is possible that where he is the cold mains is also of low pressure so the pump might be needed there as well. For example a cottage I stayed in once got all its water pumped from a well, everything was pumped as there was no mains connection.

      @@dlarge6502 Here in North America, whether you live in a city (Mains pressure) or have a well (underground pump pressuring your plumbing) is enough to run the whole house, pushing through the water heater tank, etc... I've never seen anyone with an extra pump, hence my confusion and suprise.
      Except with really high/tall buildings. In which case yes the water needs to be pumped high where a gravity system will be more than enough to pressurize everywhere in the building.

    As a German... UK plumbing looks weird. Why is the pump necessary? Is the hot water tank not pressurized or is there not enough water pressure in your area?

    The more connections you have the more chances to leak seems like this is a giant mess that needs to be condensed sorted out and done properly.. also always turn off your main water supply when working on plumbing never connections that way if anything happens you don't have to worry about pressurized water shooting all over the place

    the part that leaked was the mechanical seal you could of changed as therubber part of the would not of sealed on the rusty part, but as you say the otherside could of leaked soon after refitting.

  • @APSuk2

    I would put a tray under the pump as this is going to happen again, I would also place a water alarm in the tray so it it does leak you will get an audible warning.
    I would have though the pump should be firmly attached as every time that pump kicks on it will be moving slightly putting strain on those hoses which are also common for leaking.

    Just use oil base undercoat white when it has dried out then you can just go over it with white emulsion
