    Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a whole bundle of faulty items sent into my PO Box from viewers of the channel. Hopefully the faults and items will be varied. Let's see if any of them can be fixed.
    If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    great fix's, live the test CD, walked into a record shop once, wearing a Motorhead tee shirt and denim jacket, and went up to the counter with a Daniel O'Donnell CD, and said "its for my mom" and the cashier replied, "they all say that sir"

    The solution to the CD player was obvious... place the Daniel O'Donnel CD inside, then superglue it shut. Now it will never open unintentionally and always has the correct CD ready to play.

      What is vire-

    • @oliverer3
      @oliverer3 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rayhowe4354 Do you perhaps mean "via"? It does sound a bit like vire with the British accent. If so a via is a tiny hole drilled through a circuit board that is plated with metal to connect the tracks between the different layers of the circuit board. In this particular case, they're especially relevant as they're often more susceptible to being damaged by corrosion than the rest of the traces on the board.

    • @Atantuo
      @Atantuo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      To clarify, there's a break between the s and h, so it's something like "ducks-hoond", with the oo being a short vowel as in "foot."

    • @gregwilliams9122
      @gregwilliams9122 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would have said it's more like "dax-hoond" but yep, entirely correct.

    Regarding the Sega Game Gear, I once had a gameboy advance that was in the same condition. Granted it definitely needs a lot of work, but honestly it was a rewarding experience getting so much damage repaired and seeing it work against all odds. Tackling visible damage without having to think about it is therapeutic sometimes. I went over all the broken vias and traces with a fibreglass pen so I could physically see the break and repair it. You’ll also be surprised how many will clean up. If you wick up the solder from inside the vias you could run two through-hole jumper wires, going from point A on the top side of the board, going to point B & C on the underside.
    If the vias are full of corrosion poke it out with the end of some tweezers, clean with IPA and then run the wires.
    Come on Vince it’s vintage! It deserves a revisit! Beyond economical repair is for the manufacturers!
    My gameboy advance still works 2 years later by the way!

    With Lithium Ion batteries, the key rating is maximum continuous discharge current, which will be in amps. That's the amount of juice it can safely push out at once. As long as the replacement battery is equal to or higher than the original, you'll be fine. Amp Hours (or milliamp hours) is a measure of capacity. A one amp hour battery can supply one amp for one hour, or two amps for 1/2 hour, or 1/2 amp for two hours, etc. As far as safety goes, it doesn't matter, but a lower rating will go flat sooner. As for INR vs ICR, it doesn't really matter. The charging and discharge voltages are close enough to the same between chemistries that they are interchangeable.

    27:05 Oh heck yeah, lithium batteries don't like being charged to 100% frequently or discharged to 0% frequently, but that's exactly the life they live in power banks. And they can ultimately end up in exactly the fault condition that you found: self-discharge. I'm told that this is because the electrodes form microscopic whiskers that bridge through the electrolyte.
    49:00 Your heat-shrink finishing of the microphone arm reminds me of something I did at work a few years ago: I was wearing cheap sunglasses and managed to break one of the arms. I didn't feel like going out and buying another pair just yet, and it was a pair of sunglasses I would wear only at work anyways. So I mended it with a pair of heat shrink tubes - a slightly larger one over a smaller one for rigidity. Then a few months later the other arm broke, so I did the same fix again. Still have 'em. 😂

    Nice fixes, good idea to finish the headset arm with heat shrink tube :) Interesting the memory card converter too, one of those refused to work for me even it was new. Also plenty of MicroSD cards have failed for me, so that media seems to be the most unreliable in my experience. Even currently my phone locked up the MicroSD card, because there's some fault detected.

    You can discharge caps by shorting the live and return on the mains plug. (Obviously not plugged in 😉)

    Congrats on your fixes. Shame about that projector, it looks really well built. Maybe the DLP itself is simply dead.
    The SD card has one extra pin for the write-protect switch.

    part of me wants to send My old IBM T42 Motherboard to Vince to Reflow the GPU On (unlike most GPUs a reflow can actually be permanent on these as the chip isnt at fault). But i recently came into possession of a new motherboard which works flawlessly so no need!..but I'll keep the old board around.

    Vince , why don't you invest in some micro drills and just drill through the via, thread a strand of wire through, solder either side easier than loads of crossing wires, just a thought as I've done this before
    Great vids though , how's the roller going .

    @24:30 Did you add thermal paste after you scraped off the old dried up stuff? It could have a thermal protection check, mid-bootup as with CPUs/GPUs. I have had CPUs that were missing just a tiny amount of paste, which resulted in only about 70% or so of the surface actually covered. And that prevented the entire CPU from working -- preventing the entire system from POSTing. The CPU clearly has some way (embedded thermistors) of knowing how hot it gets, and there are sometimes motherboard sensors under it as well. So I would make sure you put new paste on it. CPUs actually have a good number of thermal sensors on them, not just one. So I think there is a good chance that there is at least one thermal sensor on that particular piece/die of silicon in your projector. And if you don't put the putty between the surfaces to bridge those surfaces and dissipate the heat, it may prevent further progress beyond that to protect itself. I know you said you were going to remove the putty. But I don't recall you saying you were going to replace it with fresh, nor did I see you do so in the video. You seemed more interested in making sure that the pins were making full connection, and you thought that the dried up paste was actually preventing the pins from contacting -- perfectly logical thinking, but only half of the problem...the die still needs cooling. I think they essentially warm up just a tiny bit and then check to see if that heat gets dissipated first before actually proceeding into fully-on mode. You can't just assume that it'll fully work and produce video until it gets hot and then shut off, which TBH it seems you did.

    That game gear is bad. It should have been clear to anyone that recapping would be pointless.
    The capacitors realy did a number on it. Hit it with some pcb cleaner and a soft toothbrush to ensure all the electrolyte crap is gone, and pack it away for spare parts.
    On a side note, what is that little computer your using while fixing the headphones/mic ?
    Great vid. 👍

    The Game Gear would defo be a Labour of love or buy one with crud case or screen and swop out parts, the sd card if I get a faulty one I throw em out as they cost penny’s & not sure about extra pin, nice work on the headset &Hifi system & I’d say ur right to give up on the projector.

    I think you missed a detail on the CD drive at 6:35-7:20, black plastik pin holding the PCB in place on the right side, is broken. Probably should have been glued to add stability otherwise the problem could easily happen again.

    I'm sure that those people who wish to repair electrical items with the idea of selling them on to some else, make sure to carry out electrical safety tests FIRST!
    Vince would also agree, that if you follow his advice, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK, BOTH PERSONALY AND LEGALLY!
    TAKE CARE OUT THERE!

    the dlp chip is just the mirror the lamp in it is bad since there is no light coming out but it stays on I would say it uses some kind of led cob

    • @phillangstrom8693
      @phillangstrom8693 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the way a dlp projector works is by taking a light source running it through a color timing wheel that separates the 3 colors needed then reflects that off of the dlp chip using the timing set on the wheel to reflect only the color needed for each pixel

    • @phillangstrom8693
      @phillangstrom8693 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      a damaged dlp chip would result in the picture being all black or white but you could still see some light in the lens even if it was all black typically if the chip go's bad it starts with a few bad pixels so i am sure your problem is in the lighting section on older dlp projectors they had a bulb replacement door so for that led one you may have to dig a bit further into it then test the led power rail when its on i bet its just one bad led in the array

    The Daniel O'Donnell CD, I think my mum probably has that CD, or it might even be on 'Compact Cassette.' I don't know if any of your video's got content matches, but when you were repairing those portable cd players, the second one, after you found the disc, in the first cd player, well you played enough of it for me to work out what the first song is... Initially the content, off of the CD was garbled, but I think Daniel O'Donnell is covering a song by another artist, which should be 'Welcome to my World' best known for being performed byJim Reeves, it was definitely a #1 7" single during the earlier part of the 1960's, in the UK. Jim Reeves was and remains my mum's favourite performer of music, in any genre of music. Yeah I heard his music quite a bit during my childhood, sort of like it now, or better understand how good he can sing, but didn't like it at all, as a child.

    Looking at the pin out, it looks like the SD card adapter has an additional VSS2 (ground pin), not sure why it's there or if it's even ever used. But the pin outs show the Micro SD card only has 1 ground pin and the adapter has 2 ground pins.

    If the sense switch on the "cd in" isn't bridged, then it's logic signal is no good. It could be a zener lock or the chip is bad
