Hi Artful. They seem like great tools. There's a lot that goes unanswered in this video. For myself and maybe any other beginners who are wondering the same, can I ask: - what is "flooding the screen"? And why is it important? - Which side do the stencils go on, and why? Looks like the inside, but won't they scrape off? - How long does masking fluid take to dry? How do you remove the masking fluid once it's finished with? - How long can we make prints before the paint dries into the screen? - Han you clean the screen if the paint has been left too long and dried? Do we have to get a new screen? It would be great to learn these things from you, before trial and error causes me to make mistakes which damage the tools. Many thanks for any help you can offer.
Dawson, just seen the tutorial on page 101 of the book, which shows the stencil on the bottom side of the screen, so it would be against the paper… I suppose as you said it was on the paint side it might get pulled off :-)
@@chrisdpirie84 Hi Chris. That's what I was thinking, but in the video they put the "ART is LIFE" letters on the top side, so that they don't print mirrored.
Hi Dawson and Chris, Thank you for your questions! This is a very basic top tips video, and we're hoping to expand the our screen printing tutorials with more videos in future. Our vinyl stickers video is currently available to watch for artful box subscribers with the code from the magazine! In the meantime, to answer your questions: - Flooding the screen just means to push the ink through the screen before you make a print. It is important as you need to load up the mesh of the screen with the paint before printing. - You are correct that the stickers should usually go on the inside. This will help your prints be positive prints, meaning all your lettering will read the correct way around. Our stickers are very adhesive, so should not scrape off for a few prints at least. They will eventually start to peel off the more times they are pulled over, through natural wear and tear. The larger printable area stickers from the start of the video can be put on the outside of the screen, as demonstrated. -The drying time of masking fluid is very dependent on how much you use. The small amount in the video should only take around 30-45 minutes. Essentially, the masking fluid needs to be bone dry to the touch before you apply your paint over it. You will need to wash the masking fluid on your paintbrush with some washing up liquid whilst it is still wet. Masking fluid can then be simply picked or scrubbed off the screen once it is dry. This will be something we expand upon in a future video! -As long as you keep re-flooding the screen after each print, you can keep making prints, but you should not leave your screen to dry at all. It is good practice to wash your screen immediately when you have finished making your prints. - You would be able to clean the screen with something like a pressure washer, but this could also likely damage the screen. It is still best to make sure nothing dries into the screen in the first place, otherwise it may be best to just buy a new one. Hope these help, and look out for the new videos in future! Best of luck with your printing, Lewis
I don’t have this box but do screen print. I’ve never seen these vinyl stickers before. Any idea where I can get them in the uk (& are they permanent once applied?) Thanks
Excited! I like how the examples of prints are accessible, but I would like to see more advanced ideas too, for inspiration. In the ink box it seemed like there were advanced inspiration videos as well as accessible ones. Just my opinion! Can't wait to try.
So you have to flood the screen first, without touching the paper underneath, and then put more paint on, and squeegee again but this time with the paper touching. Is that right?
If I understand correctly, this is included with acrylic paint, right? And that's why it's important to clean the screen quickly? But masking fluid comes off without an problem after it's dry?
Yes, you're right, the acrylic dries very quickly into the mesh so it's important to wash it before it dries. Masking fluid on the other hand will dry on top of the surface rather than in the mesh of the screen. Still best to wash off both as soon as possible though! Hope this helps
A reason I don’t subscribe to art boxes are the poor colour choices. Why not just give people a magenta in a nice primary triad instead of a nasty orangey red. Let people make orangey red themselves. Okay in something more regular and cheap like scrawlrbox I get the weird colour choices but something more pricey and wider in scope like this?

This is so exciting. My box arrived yesterday and I’m dreaming up some ideas to start today. Love the monoprint rapid ideas.
We look forward to seeing what you will make! :)
This looks like a great box! Can't wait to try it out!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy it when it arrives!

There will be some more advanced videos in the future, stay tuned ;)
Argh can't wait to get my paws on this box!
We can't wait for everyone to get them!
The screen !is there an certain grade of mesh?
Can these inks be used on fabric?
Hey @Artful are the stencils reusable? How is best to clean and store them if they are.
Thanks :-)
Hi Chris, the stencils can be used for multiple prints, but the adhesiveness of the stickers will start to wear away after repeated pulls.
So you have to flood the screen first, without touching the paper underneath, and then put more paint on, and squeegee again but this time with the paper touching. Is that right?
That's correct!
