A day in the life of a UX Designer in San Francisco (but forreal)

  • About a year ago I made a video about the day in the life as a UX Designer and looking back on it… I just don't think it was that useful. So, I made a new one. Hope you enjoy it!
    ABOUT VIDEO 👇
    1. Flexible schedules: Sometimes I get into work a bit later because I take morning meetings from home.
    2. Mornings: The mornings are often reserved for clearing emails, providing answers to questions from the day before about projects (my company is international so when I'm asleep some of my colleagues are working), as well as working on different types of design documentation.
    3. Meetings: The more you grow into leadership, the more meetings you may start to have. This is great though because you want to make sure the design team is represented in important product decisions.
No meeting-type days are common in tech. I get a lot more heads down design work done during these days. My design team sometimes runs design jams on these days too.
    4. Collaboration: I work very closely with Product Managers and Engineers. We all have important and different perspectives on the projects we work on together. Feedback is often, both in scheduled meetings and in casual conversation.
    5. Variety: Product Designers are very customer focused, so we are often working with researchers to get our designs in front of customers. Part of my job is facilitating those sessions, creating documentation on what we learned, communicating it, and using the research to inform design decisions. This creates a lot of variety to my days since we are often in different stages of the design process across different projects.

Damn! You make want to work in IT, lately I've been really depressed about finding something that I enjoy doing as a career. I was interested in UX and UI Design but never really got into it because I'm quite shy and intreoverted, and although I've always been creative & empathetic (both of these seem important in product design) I didn't want to step out of my comfort zone... Well to be honest you put a smile on my face, the working environment seems sweet and I feel like I could just fit in. Thank you for that, now I have to watch all of your videos ;)

Are you kidding me? Minus the dog pics this video was all fluff and morning routines. The first several minutes were of the UX designer getting out of bed, eating breakfast, and reading a book. The only relevant part of the morning routine is what time you have to wake up to get to work on time. The whole point of a "day in the life of [JOB TITLE HERE]" is to see what the job is like; Nobody cares if you drink Matcha tea.

I remember I used to bingewatch a lot of A Day in the Lifes of tech people just because, as a student, I really have NO IDEA what happens at "real life" work. Until I had my internship as a graphic designer in a marketing services company. I could say we have similar days. A few days we'd just have meetings, and yes sometimes ALL DAY LONG. But now I got a job as a software engineer, and it's cool to understand both sides of the project. Thanks for the amazing content! Gonna subscribe so I could watch more :)

Christian, I am curious to know why you are transitioning to design. I attended a coding bootcamp and in the months of the bootcamp, I also designed for our team. Most of them said I should do design instead of coding. But I know how hard it is to get a job as a UX designer. In one company I worked at, there was only one designer working with a dozen software engineers. What do you think of the current job marketplace for designers?

Hello Alexa. I find your video very refreshing beause I am in the middle of a job change. After spending 5 years in retail and three years as a janitor it is high time for a career goal. For the past two months, I have been learning to do Front-end development (HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript). Since I have an associate degree in general studies, I am just self-learning the UX online and again HTML5, etc on free code academy. I am praying that next year I will get a job in its field. Anyway, thank you for sharing.

I've never did this kind pf stuff nor graphic designing coding nor anything of the like but I'm willing to learn and any would help me get into a job that stabke where it's not too much competition.
I just turnee 27 and not only am I tired of draining my life scaree to try to take a new career approach but I also in live a household that's toxic where I'm still being held back by a narcassitic controlling parent who doesn't want me to explore as well.

These videos are so related and so far from my reality at the same time! I work in a small company (we don't have all these fancy stuff and food) but we face essentially the same problems and got the same tasks to do. That's really nice to watch. If I had any public, I would love to share how my routine as a 16 years old software engineer "intern" and point all these differences and similarities. Anyway, your videos are amazing.

Im watching this video 3 years later but this seems unreal LOL ...like what you see in movies. Ive been watching tech videos because Im considering a career change and my corporate life is nothing like this at all LOL. I didn't even know ppl lived like this. The tech industry has been ahead of its time for quite some time I see. Im remote now but we were always required to come into the office for meetings and them offering any snacks for free is unheard of. And even though they want us to collaborate the open office space is cube city. Just subbed!

I just started getting into UX and website designing for a dropshipping store and a blog. I had a client ask if I can create a website for her, so I kind of just dove headfirst into web design by doing a bunch of research. She is my first client, and since then I’ve only experimented with my own website.
I love finding videos like this because I’ve been working from home on my websites for 6 months now. My previous job was in the military (only 3 years-I was injured). It helps me to understand what home projects I can work on as a freelancer, how to work a job like yours from home, or finding out about jobs like yours to see what else I can start doing for income. And most importantly - since I’m still a newbie in web designing - those “how to” videos.
