Best way to explain UX and UI. Simple, take our body as a product and Soul as the user of the product. In order for the Soul to experience mortal life, what would be the ideal body for the Soul? As UX Designer, we would try to understand what Soul needs to do on Earth as a Mortal and then design the overall structure of the body, which includes Skeleton, positioning of each part (bone, organs, head, eyes, legs, etc), how each bone would behave, how each part would behave, movement limitation and many other). When all that is done, you then hand it over to the UI designer, who would then add the Visual appearance of the body (Skin color, eye shape, and color, the texture of the skin, the look and feel of everything. Change of skin color on the face when feeling shy). You can then pass this work to an Interactive designer who then can add hair movement, how your butt would giggle when running, how the skin would react when pressed, how certain body parts change in shape when blood flow increases). I hope you are more confused now lol. Technically, UX is a multi-disciplinary field. UI is just one part of the UX, just like UX researcher, Information Architect, UX writer, and many others. I found the example a bit condescending too but I guess it illustrates the difference very well, in the sense that UX is geared towards the users needs and behaviors before thinking how the product will look like.
I think the example she used about the house is better and one I use myself a lot to explain that UX is like the architect and UI is like the interior designer.
Hey Abhjit, thanks for your feedback that the example sounded condescending. UI design is absolutely crucial to building good products and it was not my intention to knock it. I would revise the path metaphor like this (I don’t think it came across quite as I intended with the stock footage they chose to show in the video) Good UX and good UI: A path leading directly to where you want to go, beautifully paved. Good UX and bad UI: A path leading directly to where you want to go, but not nicely paved so get dirt on your shoes and it’s not pleasant! Bad UX and UI: A path that takes longer to get to where you want to go which is annoying, but at least the path is beautifully paved and you don’t get dirt on your shoes. Bad UX and bad UI: It takes long to get there and your shoes are dirty! Lose-lose :( In this sense, both good UX and UI are equally important.
I liked every answer to the questions except the UX UI difference. That answer made no sense and was not helpful in clarifying the purpose of UI and UX. It just made the person sound like she thinks UX is better than UI when that is not the case. Here is a better analogy: UX is the architectural plans, the blueprint. UI is the interior design of the finished blueprints. One is the structuring and the other is deciding how the structuring will look, which is also important.
Her analogy was really really bad. UI is that paved path? And UX is that dirt path? Is she seriously a UX designer? UX and UI goes hand in hand. A good UI complements a good UX. A great UI obviously does not make an app with a rubbish UX great and vice versa.
Hey Arfandi, thanks for the feedback. I don’t think it that metaphor came across quite as I intended in the video. Both good UX and good UI are equally important! Perhaps the metaphor of UX designer as architect and UI designer as interior designer works better. Both are necessary, and one can’t exist without the other.

Hi M, Thank you for your comment, it really made me think. I cried when my coworkers were let go. It was a scary time and I didn't know if I was going to be the next one to be let go. But we helped each other through it and because of that, many found jobs afterwards or moved on to better things. But you're right, I think I tried really hard to gloss over the pain and find some kind of positive in the situation. I didn't find the courage to say that in the context of this video.

Bad UX and UI: A path that takes longer to get to where you want to go which is annoying, but at least the path is beautifully paved and you don’t get dirt on your shoes.
Bad UX and bad UI: It takes long to get there and your shoes are dirty! Lose-lose :(
In this sense, both good UX and UI are equally important.
To me UX is basically a roadmap and UI is the collection of roads and signs.
Coincidence I too worked at Fab and currently I am working at another of ur employer
Couldn't get over the fact that she said "Sketch files"! Why is Google still using Sketch and not Figma!?
The comparison between UI and UX was terrible, it's definitely not as negative as she made it to be but actually more interconnected.
I liked every answer to the questions except the UX UI difference.
That answer made no sense and was not helpful in clarifying the purpose of UI and UX.
It just made the person sound like she thinks UX is better than UI when that is not the case.
Here is a better analogy:
UX is the architectural plans, the blueprint.
UI is the interior design of the finished blueprints.
One is the structuring and the other is deciding how the structuring will look, which is also important.
Would it be fair to say that the paint job is the graphics department and the house in total is the 'product' ?
Yas, thank you.
oh, i d love to have my home decorated that way
Me too! This was filmed at the Springboard office lol
I love thissss
Imo this video didn't need the stock footage cuts. It's a little weird.
I thought the same tbh
What exactly is the difference between UX and UI I still don’t get it
Bravissimo. Thanks.
I wear black turtleneck and glasses :)
Why is she using printed colour swatches?
its stock video from video banks
Does the UX designer need to be a developer?
Thank you
No friend! but if you will work on it or software i recommend to you learn about main basic concepts about html, css and informatics lenguages
@@rebel024 thanks Pablo
Lol what her example of compromise was the developers lying about what is possible and her looking into it herself and realizing they were wrong.
good design process :)
I was interested to know the tools they use at google though..
Question: What gives more cache to put in your CV? UX Designer or Product Designer?
Who was the designer she looks up to? I couldn’t quite catch that
Jessica Hische
Did she already have a degree before entering into springboard?
Hey its_Mike, I had a degree in traditional graphic design before learning UX
Why the Host is so happy?
Her analogy was really really bad. UI is that paved path? And UX is that dirt path? Is she seriously a UX designer? UX and UI goes hand in hand. A good UI complements a good UX. A great UI obviously does not make an app with a rubbish UX great and vice versa.
Agree, she presented it really poorly
Hey Arfandi, thanks for the feedback. I don’t think it that metaphor came across quite as I intended in the video. Both good UX and good UI are equally important! Perhaps the metaphor of UX designer as architect and UI designer as interior designer works better. Both are necessary, and one can’t exist without the other.
I think she was visualizing a meme circulating around linkedin of two paths that describe the difference between UX and UI
I've never been stylish. I definitely don't dress the part of a designer (whatever that means). I feel uncomfortable at the few social gatherings I've had the nerve to attend. I still want to be a UX Designer 😥
Hey DelToro! I just came here to say, don't let that stop you. I also deal with social anxiety, and am fighting it tooth and nail every day. This interview looks super polished, but I wish you could see all the cut scenes of my voice trembling because I was terrified to be on video! lol. Wishing you all the best.
@@sandywoodruff2806 Well if you struggle with this and you're cool, I must be cool too! I appreciate you taking the time to notice me and reach out. It's comforting to know I made the right choice. I just started a post graduate program for UX Design in Toronto. I was feeling out of place as before this I worked in Petroleum Engineering. You're doing great, keep up the good work! I would have never known you weren't comfortable, you really POP on camera haha. Take care, Sandy.
@@DelToro7 You are most certainly cool too :) Thank you, and good luck with your post grad program!
Who edited this video? It's an interview and you rarely even get to watch it.
What's she's named, please (both). I like this interview.
City people are so lucky.. Because of lack of resources.. we don't get a Job..
Need Job atleast to reach my goal
Interviewer is an advanced humanoid version of a chatbot
STAR method. She speaks as if she was having job interview and was just asked the question how did you handle a conflict at work 🤣🤣🤣
ux = placement, ui = style, theme, drawing . as simple as that
@Tenso 72 Design consists of UX and UI.
Sketch??
I don’t agree with a few things but most importantly what she said about “design skills are easier to learn than people skills” which is completely wrong if you work with softwares like cinema 4d, after effects, creating custom typography or know how to build a cohesive brand. It takes decades, what easier are u kidding me?
Cool input! But please stop using these stock footages. These images did so hard not match to what was said so that what was said was bended to a wrong direction.
I do meditation when I watch interviews because the video is 100% not important to understand her answers.
This interview helped me to forget about UX and pursue other career. The challenge of evangelizing what you do feels exhausting to me because you wont get taken seriously.
🖒❤
she just told us that google has developed products for their creators to protect them from google. lol.
sorry the paved path vs the rugged shortest path is not a good example of difference between ui and ux. UI are the things along the path that helps make the entire journey enjoyable.
yikes. why are some people in the comments so negative? I thought UX designers are supposed to have empathy? I feel that she isn't able to articulate some words. I had the same experience in a UX conference where UX designers are so full of ego and trying to correct the speakers and mumble in their seats. *sigh*
How to start our journey as ux designer, like what course to do, is it better to have a degree in designing or a diploma courses will prove better, what should a student of class 12th do?
Please share me some details about all this, and whats the scope in India and in at global years in coming years.
Katie?
How much u make as a designer ?
About three fiddy
Black turtle neck and glasses :) must have met me.
She applied 3 times or went through the interview process 3 times...not the same.
"great collaborater"...
nope, not the area of design I want to go down
"everyone around me got fired but I enjoyed the opportunity to get all the experience I needed so fast" Sorry but why does this sound so ingenious and dishonest? Vulnerability, anyone? Leadership and qualities to look for when putting people in to the spotlight ought to go beyond brands we work for. It's not 2010 anymore 🙄
Hi M,
Thank you for your comment, it really made me think.
She got muney
3:15 Using iphone in Google 😂
It's 2020, no one sane buys in the belief that UX & UI are separated.
why am i watching this?
She cute
most ux-ers I've met were very narrow-minded. I mean is nothing wrong with it, but is like knowing broad spectrum of design is something uncommon. I love (ugh!) working in team of 20 uxers team and solving one small fucking thing. Now process are more complicated just for sake of it! Is like limiting handyman just to hammering nails and nothing else. Where is fucking creativity??
Wouldn’t be a sight to Interview talent other than the conglomerates. These companies monopolize innovations, built products with no ethics, and send trend/norms by hashtags. Talent is everywhere. In the epoch of inclusiveness-this interview attaches to the same old norms.
If this is a UX design video and not a packaging or graphic design then why do we see designers with Pantone shade cards. When was the last time you used a Pantone shade card as a Web/UI or UX designer? I mean seriously we use hex codes and not shade cards. Let's get over colored pencils and shade cards for once!
LOL! Spot on!
