    This video literally CHANGED MY LIFE. I have found this video as soon as it was posted, by some weird sheer luck. I was sad, depressed, very sick, staying in a Hostel with almost no money, in a foreign country. I was looking for something to motivate me change my life, and find something that drives my heart and mind on a daily basis, something I can indulge in and keep me fulfilled. I gave myself 3-6 months to get where I want. I got there in 6 months. I got an achievement unlocked and now I am on my next 3-6 months journey. I have No Words for enough Thank you for sharing this

    It's always refreshing to see new UX designers share their stories on TH-cam, especially those who are self-taught. I come from a UX bootcamp background, and I can say with confidence that it IS possible to learn UX by yourself if you're dedicated and have the motivation and drive to do it. It's admirable to listen to your story and so many others who have transitioned into the field not having any sort of design background (I'm in that boat). I just want to say thank you for putting yourself out there and for sharing your beautiful story. I know that people will appreciate this, especially those who need that extra push to take the leap of faith. So thank you!

      Thanks for the kind words Jason! You're right, it IS possible to be self-taught in design :) I'd add that a strong design eye is important so you instinctively know what's good design and what can be improved.

    • @julesm9081
      @julesm9081 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Exactly this has inspired me so much- I used to work in catering and was bullied so much by managers. Then I got a kitchen shop Job but was made redundant from it last August due to the pandemic- I have applied for hundreds more jobs with no luck yet - and when I got another rejection recently I just decided that’s it, I want to learn something new and give myself hopefully something to put on my cv that will stand out. I have enrolled on a coding course online. And I also really want to learn ux. this true story is such an inspiration to me I have watch it at least 6 times this past week.
      Just so incredibly inspirational I’m so grateful to have found this video thank you Rachel for making it and sharing it!

      Some companies and hiring managers dislike people that are too ambitious. The reason because being too ambitious means they can't control you and you will stir things up. Also some managers can see you as a threat. sucks but that is reality.

    • @yupidilicsart
      @yupidilicsart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@AnthooFitz Wow. Now I understand my past job situation. Thank you! I was so ambitious at my job that they wanted to control me to exhaustion. When they couldn't anymore, the manager did dirty things to have reasons to fire me. I think now he was afraid that I would be more qualified to do his work since he had no studies or experience in the field. My work mate didn't really believe me until the manager did something dirty to put a stain on her image too in front of the boss.

    • @AnthooFitz

You were very focused and dedicated, and hearing how disciplined you were when creating your portfolio, is giving me a lot of hope into breaking into UX Design. I just dropped out of college at 21, and I cannot bring myself to go back. And when I learned about this career, I was worried at first. Since so many companies ask for a bachelor's degree. While I only have a college certificate in art. I hope to create my portfolio and land an entry level job in UX Design within 6-8 months. I thank you for sharing your story, as there are many designers who had a bachelor's degree in something else.

    Good to hear your story. I'm a freelance web designer. I was studying Architecture but dropped out and got into web design way before there was TH-cam or any web resource. My brother at that time was studying engineering in computers, and he had a book called "Learn HTML in 24 hours". That's how I got started and then I simply sat in internet cafe's to see the code used by other large companies, which I first copied and then modified to see what happens. 20 years later, I still love this field.

I recently just finished the Google UX course, and I'm trying to be taken seriously, but it's hard as my last job I was a high school teacher. I dropped out of my last year in uni because of anxiety, but I overcame it a few years later and have been struggling to get back on track ever since. It's definitely difficult to get people to recognise you as an intelligent hard worker without a degree. There is a kind of accepted fascism about relegating other humans to the bottom of the ability hierarchy without one. I have dedicated myself to making the best of what I can with professional certifications and trades, trying to fight my way back, and I know that if I could get a chance it would be so valuable to me that I would return that value multiple times over. Thanks for the push to carry on. 😄
