Filmmakers back then actually tried to make their CGI look realistic, regarding it as a visual tool with exciting potential. Now they figure the audience has been conditioned to accept any crappy CGI as "good" so they stopped trying.

    • @AWSVids
      @AWSVids 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@sparkshusky2482 This is one of those situations where technology advancing actually ended up in a less realistic result, because the limitations of the time forced them to come up with a more creative use of practical elements. Nowadays, to a do a tornado, you would use a particle simulator to just simulate all the dust and debris, etc, which wasn’t possible at the time. But they had rudimentary particle animation, which could simulate a tornado of particles, but the particles weren’t numerous or complex enough to look real, because the computers of the day didn’t enough power to handle enough particles to do it. So what they did was they filmed elements of dust and smoke, so they had realistic footage... and attached all those elements to the animated particle system. So what we’re actually seeing in this movie is a big animated collage of real dust and smoke footage in the shape and motion of a tornado. This ended up achieving a more realistic result than a pure CG simulated tornado.
This is the same way they did the fire for the Balrog in Lord of the Rings. CG fire tends to look fake as well, so they shot real footage of fire and attached those elements to the particle system. Looks real... because it is. It’s not computer generated, it’s just real footage being digitally manipulated.
But then... computers got better and it became easier and faster to just simulate things like dust, smoke, fire, etc. So that took over as the way it’s done nowadays.

Ok, so I grew up in tornado alley, and lived through the F5 in Joplin, MO. Yes, there is insurance for tornados, and yes, generally the government will help out if an area is entirely wiped out. As for living in the area, you just kind of accept it. People are more likely to sit on the porch watching the tornado then actually taking cover - at least until you live through an F5 level event. Then people tend to take it more seriously. Still though, a LOT of the footage you see online is just ol' Bubba in his pickup and camcorder taking video during the storm. Some people are meteorologists, some people work WITH meteorologists, and some people are just your average thrill seeker who enjoys doing it. Hopefully that answers some of your questions, if oyu have anymore, let me know, I'll be glad to answer!

There’s been a couple of tornado movies since Twister but nothing compares. You sound like somebody that lives in an area where tornados don’t happen. My son and I live in the Midwest and We’ve actually chased storms/tornadoes before. About two years ago my son was storm chasing, spotted and called in a tornado to authorities, and is credited with saving lives. This tornado occurred at night like the one in the movie. Generally people don’t chase storms at night because you can only see the tornado when there’s a lightning strike. So again like in the movie, you run the risk of actually driving into the tornado. Seeing one live is incredible! Their power is unbelievable.

I think the visual effects on the tornados still holds up amazingly well. The effects on the farming equipment being picked up by the twister near the end hasn't aged as well. I went to the cinema to see this when I was 13 and seeing this in full surround sound was mind-blowing. Hearing the wind pick up and come in from behind you made you think you were right in the middle of it. And as you pointed out, the score made for this movie just enhanced it even further. I still think of the score from time to time it's that good.

You don’t get scared for your house living in tornado alley you get scared for your family members. You call people as soon as you hear of a bad storm and make sure they are sheltering. And you do that for everyone in the path. Especially if you are currently sheltering. You just try to make sure everyone knows. You don’t care about the house until after the storm is over, cause there’s nothing you can do about it or for it.

An interesting choice to react on the channel. I haven’t seen this one since I was a little boy from back in the day when the movie first came out, so I had to revisit it first before coming here to check out your reaction to it. I got another long comment for you, but like usual I'll try not to make it too long for you.
I only saw this once as a boy, and I will saw that this movie scared the crap out of me as a boy just because of the concept of being caught up in a tornado, the whole concept to me was so frightening that I didn’t really pay attention to the story on my first viewing back then. After revisiting this movie, although some of the effects are a little dated, they’re still pretty good IMO. Scenes like the ones at 18:31, 10:39, really scared me as a boy.
Another reason for my fear was because of where I lived growing up, my family and I were subject to many hurricanes throughout the years and my young uneducated mind correlated hurricanes and tornados as being the same thing, so this movie gave me a fear that every time we were hit with a hurricane that our house may be destroyed or we would get killed from the hurricane caving in on the house from the hurricane or tornado.
8:39 “I think she’s way better for Bill than this other lady” I thought the same thing when rewatching this, I also think that she’s prettier than her too. This movie was 1 of 3 movies (the other 2 being “As Good As It Gets”, & “What Women Want”) that introduced me to Helen Hunt (who was one of my celebrity crushes), who I also knew her for her TV role of Jamie on “Mad About You”.
9:46 “I’m a happy person” He said happy way too many times in that scene. Like I said before; the more someone tries to convince you of something, the more likely the opposite of what they’re saying is true.
Also to answer your question at 20:20 “Is there like Tornado insurance or something like that?” and about what happens when you lose your home to a natural disaster and how do you recover from something like that. Well to answer your question, yes there is tornado insurance, but as for the coverage, it’s a complicated question with many factors that come into play.
Overall it varies depending on things such as where you live, the extent of the damage done to the home, the type of insurance your house is covered under, but generally what will happen is you either get part or all of the losses covered through the insurance, you get temporary housing and relief until you recover from the disaster, or until your house is either repaired or completely replaced, and if you got some really good insurance coverage, you’re also entirely relieved of the burden of having a mortgage to pay off due to losing the home (again it primarily depends on the type of insurance you have; meaning the really good coverage plans require high deductibles to get all those benefits).
Another thing to mention is that even if you lose your home (this is a worst case scenario), you are still technically required to pay your mortgage even though you lost your home. But if you don’t really have any good insurance, and you find yourself in an untenable situation due to losing your home to a tornado or other natural disaster and are unable to make payments, you’re given options to either do partial payments or to skip payments on your mortgage, or you can simply take out a loan from the bank for assistance (the only nice thing is that you won’t get late fees for that). Again this is of course a worst case scenario, but in most cases you are offered assistance from either the government or natural disaster administrations because offering assistance to disaster survivors is better and much easier than doing foreclosures on homes for something that was beyond anyone’s control.
Your commentary like usual was funny, my favorite moment was when you casually asked at 16:28 “Why are we watching ‘The Shining’ now?”, 8:15 “I feel it in the dirt”, 25:59 “I don’t know what happened, but I’m happy too.” 18:00 “Hello again, my old friend. You killed my father, prepare to die.”
Some of my favorite parts of your reactions was at 22:24, 10:43, 25:39, 13:52, 22:55, and 4:01.
Anyways good reaction as always, and I look forward to your next reaction, whenever you post it that is.
BTW I'm curious if you have ever seen the Wizard of Oz (since it was referenced in the movie)? If not, that should be one you should consider reacting to on the channel in the future.

Tornadoes are usually covered under homeowners insurance polices. Windstorms aren't the special, localized risk like floods are in flood plains, which are usually not covered and the reason for the Nat'l Flood Insurance Program.
EDIT: Those well pipes are probably sunk to about 30'-40', they could very likely hold. They don't present nearly enough of an air foil to the wind to overcome that much leverage.

RolyPolyOllie Reactions --- This entire story is about Jo's and Bill's failing marriage, and the quest to get Dorothy up inside the twister is a metaphor for Jo's inability to achieve orgasm. She is pre-orgasmic, frigid, due to issues surrounding the loss of her father. The twister always just eludes them, until she experiences catharsis then, as Dusty says, "...the suck zone..." is attained.

I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to explain the answer to your questions.
Most insurance policies for homeowners and renter's encompass one of four different types of insurance: homeowner's insurance, renter's insurance, natural disasters insurance, or tornado damage insurance. Depending on your status as a homeowner or a renter, you may have only one of these or a combination of two. After a tornado destroys your home, your town typically receives federal aid from the government to help you with immediate homelessness and cleanup of the debris. About 99% of the time your old home is demolished and is rebuilt where it stood. Depending on your policy, and the damage quote from the insurance agency will determine what is paid out-of-pocket by you and what will be covered by the insurance agency. Most insurance companies located in tornado alley offer full coverage insurance so that victims don't have to pay for tornado damage on top of medical bills.

From the perspective of having now been through two tornadoes (f5 and f3 respectively) I still enjoy this movie, despite the characters frequent actions that are downright stupid...You don't need to hold the door shut, dad, the wind is going to push it down on you before yanking it off. Your wife and kid are like...3 feet away and perfectly fine, you don't see THEM being sucked out of the thing and flung a couple of miles in whatever direction the tornado decides to fling you...it is much stronger than you. Also Bill, you're supposed to be a meteorologist, why the hell do you think taking shelter under a bridge is going to help you?? Yeah I know the newspeople who did that in 1991 sort of popularized it, and everybody saw that on the TV including me because that was one of my two tornadoes, but you should really KNOW that trying to do that is just asking to die. I think the newspeople even learned that by the time this movie came out and the severe weather-people were still in damage control mode telling people NOT to do this....but still....you're going to get sucked out of the thing and flung a couple of miles in whatever direction the tornado decides to fling you. It is much stronger than you. Not that you wouldn't have gotten sucked into it by the time you bail out of truck. You're too close. That poor cow.

This was when CGI was not in the beginning, but not quite like it is nowadays. So the sound and the visual efectos at that time was pretty impressive.

Yes you can go out and Chase tornadoes if you like. I would strongly suggest you watch some of these Storm Chasers before thinking about heading out. The May 13th 2013 El Reno tornado in Oklahoma was an unpredictable tornado. Storm Chasers lost their lives. Tim Michael Samaras was a part of the Discovery Channel. He was also an engineer designs his own equipment. Tornado killed him. There's different Storm Chasers. I'll give you a few; Storm Riders, Tornado Chasers, Storm Chasers, and Tornado Road. Those are just a few.

Oh well, I appreciated it enough *for* him. ❧ I also was fortunate enough to "ride" the *Twister* *Experience* at Universal Studios Florida. It was replaced in 2015. #RolyPolyOllie #Twister

To answer the question on insurance and rebuilding, there are insurance options available for those who live in areas prone to natural disasters.
Back during the Hurricane Andrew relief efforts, I had an Aunt and Uncle work on claims adjusting for many of the devastated neighborhoods in Miami-Dade. FEMA loans are also a thing for massive disasters that are big enough to garner federal attention.
The biggest takeaway for me was rewatching coverage of the ‘89 Loma Prieta quake (I lived through it as a kid), and seeing a Santa Cruz resident interviewed on the news, talking about how he just turned down earthquake insurance the week before.

    • @jowbloe3673
      @jowbloe3673 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hurricane Andrew caused many insurance companies to go bankrupt, and those that survived reduced their coverage and canceled policies in hurricane areas to avoid paying billions of dollars in claims for future hurricanes.

The plot is only trying the launch Dorothy's sensors??? What happened to Bill & Joe's plot, & Bill & therapist's plot?
Dorothy was based on a real research device called TOTO.
This was my first movie after moving to central Ohio. You can't imagine how incredible it was to watch this in the theater! I'm surprised you didn't touch on the sound design. Maybe you couldn't hear it on your sound system, but whenever a tornado dominated the screen, there was an almost subliminal animal growl coming from the speakers at the sides & back of the theater. It made it more immersive: seeing the twisters from Joe's point of view -- as monsters!

Seeing you recently reacted to the Godfather trilogy and Goodfellas, I have to recommend the movies Casino (1995), Carlito's Way (1993) and Donnie Brasco (1997), all of them dealing in various ways and degrees with the mob/crime underworld. Stellar cast in all movies, with several familiar names from your earlier reactions. :)

Yes, they made more modern one a few years ago but it was no Twister. There’s also an older pretty decent one actually called Tornado, starring Bruce Campbell and Ernie Hudson, that came out to cash in on Twister.
