Easy actually. They made a nice intro, but everything else about asteroid was a huge disappointment. This asteroid is cringe. It would be better without asteroid at all.
"AJ, I got just five words for you: Damn glad to see you boy!" "That's six words." Fun Fact: The film opened on Liv Tyler's twenty-first birthday. Casting Notes Fact: First major starring role for Michael Clarke Duncan, prior to this film he had done very small roles in TV and in film. Not Excessive Fact: After Rockhound (Steve Buscemi) gets space dementia, the shuttle crew wraps him in duct tape, which is, in fact, NASA protocol for immobilizing a crazed crew member. Free NASA Training Fact: NASA shows this film during their management training program. New managers are given the task of trying to spot as many errors as possible. At least 168 have been found. He's Not Wrong Fact: Rockhound's (Steve Buscemi) line about sitting on a million pounds of fuel in a rocket built by the lowest bidder is a variation of an actual radio transmission by Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard, just prior to lift-off.
Less Fun Fact: Some sick-minded internet trolls tried to pass off clips from this film of the shuttle exploding as real life footage of the space shuttle Columbia burning up on re-entry.
On a serious note.. due to the glare they can't see comets approaching from the sun's direction, though we could certainly afford to spend more on the search effort. In fact, there have been several near misses we only learned about as the meteor was moving away from us. Some REALLY good news is that NASA only recently did a comet deflection test by ramming a meteor with a probe at high speed.. the result were beyond expectations.. you can google the impact footage from the impacting satellites view (DART), and a separate orbiting observer probe.. amazing stuff. btw a potential planet killer 99942Apophis will be passing so close in 2029 it will be just under 40,000km, passing under our geosynchronous satellites, possibly taking a few out, before an even CLOSER pass in 2036. Before more tracking sata was collected, they were freaking, and it still holds the record of having the highest impact probablity, until the new data reduced the risk. NASA says it will have less than 1% chance of impact, but umm it's kinda cutting it a bit close for us to be so complacent for my liking. I'm geting quasi 'Don't Look Up' vibes. Before the Ukraine conflict, the ESA (Europe) and Russia were talking about a 'test' deflection mission. Btw.. this and Deep Impact coming out the same time is what happens when someone shops a script around and one of the studios decides to make their own impact movie instead.
This movie makes me feel like a tool because I get misty eyed at the end. Seen it dozens of times since it was released and I can't help it. And now that I have two daughters it's even worse.
I actually remember Deep Impact being the lesser of the two astroid movies, but only because Armageddon had so many huge stars, a bigger budget and they had Aerosmith attached for the main song for the film.
It might have been lesser in the box office, but I enjoyed Deep Impact much more than Armageddon. I just wasn't able to suspend disbelief enough. Deep Impact was much better researched for the science and aeronautics.
Kids and young adults love Armageddon because of the explosions adults love deep impact because of the emotional resonance of the movie. I didn't like deep impact when I was a kid I loved Armageddon I thought it was better but nowadays deep impact is definitely better than Armageddon.
Awww shucks Roly, I thought this was the film that Sandra Bullock’s character was referencing in Miss Congeniality when explaining why a contestant was disqualified from the pageant. Maybe we can get a review of ‘Arma-Get It On’ for the new year. (Jk)
This is just a popcorn flick, Not a good story. But very entertaining. If you want to see more disaster movies check out. The Towering Inferno Earthquake The poseidon adventure San Andreas. The Day After. B.t.w. cool Star Trek poster.
Unfortunately "Meteor" isn't very good. The other big 70s disaster movies "The Poseidon Adventure", "Earthquake", and "Towering Inferno" are much better. I hope Oliver will watch those some time.
Speaking of Sean Connery, he was considered for the part of Harry Stamper, but Michael Bay didn’t picked him because he was searching a younger actor instead
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson says Armageddon is the least scientifically accurate movie. He used to say it was The Black Hole. But he says Armageddon breaks more laws of physics per minute. I much prefer Deep Impact.
Worst science in any movie ever. Starting the space station rotation BEFORE docking? Ever tried to jump on a fast-spinning merry-go-round? Nevertheless, the visual effects were very good and it was stupidly entertaining.
I agree that run time is long. However, cutting the strip club and fighting in the club as well as the estranged father wouldn't make this movie better. Those scene sought out to humanize the characters (even though I also didn't care about them) the progressive man type film wouldn't get made in a movie from 1998 and shouldn't be made ever anyway. Ollie, you are the coolest dork reactor on yt. Ds9 and your movie choices have been awesome
Deep Impact > This cash grab crap Arm-ma-get-drunk Team Deep Impact Also none relation to this genre movie but Deep Rising is more watchable fun then Bay's garbage
Armageddon is the movie that you love when you're a teenager it's got lots of explosions Great action but it's a dumb popcorn flick. Deep impact is the movie that you love when you're an adult because it's very emotional great acting and the struggle of humanity deep impact is a smart and emotional end of the world movie
I always wondered why they couldn't have detonated one on the side to throw the trajectory off enough to miss, but I guess that wouldn't have made a good movie 🙂
There's an actual movie from the late 70s called "Meteor" as well. It's less "Armageddon" and more "The Towering Inferno" tho: short on action, big on interpersonal conflict. Y'know, classic Disaster Movie stuff.
You say the whole world is getting drunk tonight, I say the whole world is getting laid tonight, baby boom starts again and all the conceptions will be tracked back to this week
Thanks, Oliver! ☄ While I prefer DEEP IMPACT (1998) as a work of art... this one is perfect fine as a popcorn movie... like a fun roller-coaster. 👩🚀 All of your criticisms are valid... particularly on the fact that the writers had no clue how to write meaningfully for Ms. Tyler's character.
Such a fum movie! critics hated it. NASA said it was the most scientific inaccurate movie made it was a hugeee success! I love this movie and your reaction and reviews!
"I kinda hope that they fail, and the asteroid hits the Earth." This is how i felt when i first saw the movie, as well. But when you said it, i started to very lightly chuckle, and it slowly grew over the course of about 15 seconds, until i couldn't stop laughing for like 2 minutes. Thanks, Ollie.
I thought his statement was stupid and short sighted. To me it showed he can't comprehend the magnitude of what's going on, even though it was plainly laid out.
I really dispise this movie with every fiber of my being. If my hate for this movie where heat, I would be burning with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. I would rather lay on a bed of nails and be covered in honey and fire ants than have to ever sit through this movie again. Even typing these words pisses me off that I’m devoting any more time or thought into this god-awful piece of mold-covered crap.
I mean, Armageddon is crap but it's not worthy of *hate*. It's just a stupid michael bay movie. The only thing I *hate* about it is the god-awful soundtrack - which if you were alive in 1998, was on every radio, all day, every day for about 6 months.
