  • Fall crankbait fishing is so much fun! You can catch so many fish and it takes very little effort. Whether you fish once in a while or every day, these quick tips will help you catch way more fish this Fall!
In today's video Matt shows the baits he has the most confidence in between the Summer and Fall. He explains how the different actions trigger fish differently and when to use each style. He goes on to cover specific colors, hook modifications, likely locations, and finally ends with gear recommendations.
If you've ever thrown a deep diving crankbait you know just how much fun it can be! You also know the heartbreak that comes with losing a giant bass as it spits out your crank. Apply Matt's tips this Fall to successfully land more of the big bass that eat your bait.
Below is a breakdown of the baits, colors, and equipment that the guys use for this style of fishing.

I can attest to the red hook phenomenon. I was up at Lake of the Woods Canada and we tossed crankbaits ALL day long, everyday. Far and away the best crankbaits were the ones with red trebles. We spent one evening painting red fingernail polish on everything we had.

Good quality fluorocarbon like Sniper doesn't have a lot of stretch and when you pause the reel, the bait stops... especially if you unload the rod.
I went out and bought a specific rod and reel to try cranking with braid and it freaking sucks. I put that setup down after 30 mins and haven't cranked with braid since. 100% fluorocarbon is the deal!

Weren't no such thing as a DD22 when I was a kid! You pulled a white cedar Bomber or Hellbender w/a ⅛oz gray minnow Roostertail behind it! Then came the Mann's 20+. That and a ¼oz Hammered Chrome Mann's Li'l George put many a deep bass in my boats. Then came Poe's 400s and Norman DD22s. I'm too old to 'kneel & reel' these days. I have a couple of soft plastic swimbait crappie jigs that catch bass ALL THE TIME. EVERY TIME. ON LIGHT TACKLE. My deep crankin/plug knockin days are behind me.

I finally broke down and bought some Lucky Craft pointer jerkbaits. I wanted to throw them before changing the hooks so I went to a local river and within 4-5 casts I hooked a beast close to shore. I had it right in front of me. I wasn't really thrashing or trying to shake the bait off, it was just heavy. Right as I was about to try and grab it it came off literally 1 foot from me. The stinking light wire hooks were bent out. $17 jerkbait with cheap weak hooks. I was furious. The sad part was I had some Gamakatsu 2x short shank EWG trebles but I didn't think I would need them at the river. Lesson learned.

I always fish with 20lbs braid and a Tungsten trace wire, because of the many pike and walleye. Red hooks do NOT stay red very long before the underlying yellow metal appears. Is that brass? So i prefer the darker hi-carbon Gamakatsu trebles and for the BIGger cranks i apply Double (2) split-rings it gives the hooks a little separation. Store your crank-baits with treble covers they stay sharper much longer and are easier and quicker to get out of their compartment....(i try to fill up the WHOLE compartment with diff. colours of the same lure)
But i will try the Stop-and-Go method more often. Have a great Catch 🎣😜👍

Pay attention Matt! At that deep, the red color of the treble hook is completely faded (only blue color is still visble), indeed the red and yellow radiations are assorbed by the upper column of water. This means that red trebles appear as pale grey (maybe they are less visible than black ones, fishes are less intimidated, and hit with more decision). Thanks a lot for all your precious information!

Not trying to be a smartass here, but another thought...
We can only measure what we can see with our human eyes.

Sorry! Depth, not deep (I am not native speaker).
Light penetration is physic (universal), not physiology (depending on the living creature).
My comment was not intended to offend anyone.
It was just a suggestion in order to draw more precise conclusions.
Matt is a wise and deductive person, I think he does not needs defense from anyone.

@@fabriziofabris3423 no need to get defensive man. Like I said, I wasn't trying to be a smartass. I was just trying to provoke the thought that we can only create a measurement based on what we see as humans. We have no way of knowing what a fish can actually see.

I can put many more big cranks in the same box you use just by using small rubber bands to secure the hooks to the bait. I can pick out the one I want without pulling three others I don’t want too. If I spend, extra money for premium hooks. I want them to stay sharp, letting them rattle around loose getting dull and scratching the paint off each other makes no sense to me. This summer I caught one 45” Musky and one 6-pound Largemouth on an 8-inch copy of a Huddleston soft swimbait. You said you often fish them using only a single hook. I followed your recommendations and it worked. Both fish had the hook stuck thru the corner of the mouth. That big rubber Perch never came loose and that Musky did a couple 360˚ summersaults. Here is my question: Jigs, worms. Creature baits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, swimbaits all catch bass using one hook. Why would anyone think using single inline hooks on a crankbait would not work? I tried it this summer and it works, I still have not lost one bass hooked I caught yet. Getting baits unsnagged is easier and getting snagged happens less. What do you think?

I'm still confused about the color red on hooks considering every chart says red is the first color that disappears first in the color spectrum

Fish eat other fish head first, that's just nature. The fact they're grabbing the front treble more often than not (think about your jerkbait catches) is just a function of the fact they're trying to eat the fish head-first. Having the right type of hook and quality hooks is an important factor within your control, as he states 👍. Forget about that red garbage imo.

I love your channel and your advice. You guys rock ! I have a question though. In one of your videos you suggested using a medium long pole to catch fish but I am having problems catching fish with this pole. I brought this pole because of your advice but when I was using a light pole it seems like I was catching more fish. Any tips?

I fish the Upper Potomac river WV/MD for smallies and I know smallies go after cranks as much as largies everywhere....except here for some reason. tubes and worms(wacky rigged, occasionally t rigged) are the only thing that works and its the most frustrating thing in the world when you wanna catch em on anything else, like spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, cranks, and just about anything else. they wont even hit whopper ploppers or other noise making topwaters

Alright I have a question for you. I recently got three Norman deep little ns from tackle warehouse. We all know how to tune a crank. I could not get them tuned. I got looking close at the bills. On all three crankbaits neither side of the bills matched. My buddies said I was crazy of course. But when we got really studying them. The bills looked like the mold or what have you were done wrong. I’m asking you if you deep little ns have perfect bills or you see that either side is different from one another. I know Norman is a main stay in the tackle box. Just trying to see what’s up. Thanks for your videos and information. FYI the wife’s red fingernail polish works great on hooks and cranks. Thanks again

Hey Matt, I'm going back through all of the TB cranking videos, trying to improve my game and I'm wondering why you opt for HG reels instead of more conventional lower gear ratio reels that everyone seems to swear by for this technique (for torque and slower presentation). Any wisdom would be much appreciated. Thanks man!

Hey guys in many of your videos you recommend the SLX and Curado crankbait rods but they are rated for up too 1 1/2 ounce baits. Many of these crankbaits are over that, do ratings typically not matter as much for cranking?

Just getting back to fishing but building more of a simple legacy to leave my son-in-law and grandsons. Not looking to own a ton of rods, never fished lures & baits growing up. I have puchased the new Carado DC and a Expride A MH 7'2" rod. On the spinning side I have just purchased the new Shimano Stradic C3000XG. My father's spinning rod (40+ yo) is a Mitchell Signature Series M660MS 2pc that I plan to use with the new real. My question is whether the new style of fishing places the Mitchell rod into a more specific use and should I invest in another "more versitle" single piece rod as an addition to my legacy effort. I have been away from fishing for 30 years chasing birdies on the golf course. My grandsons have reminded me how much fun I had fishing with my dad. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

      My advice to you:
All of these small details make a big difference to a tournament fisherman where every second and every little detail can make a difference in a competition. All of these small details won't make a bit of difference in a memory of spending quality time with a grandfather. No money spent on fancy equipment will change a childhood memory for them. They won't look back and remember a rod or reel; they will look back and remember their grandfather.
