16:31 “have another think coming” is actually the “more proper” version of the phrase, but because we don’t really use “think” as a noun in North America, it’s been displaced by “another thing” since the 70s.
I am currently studying for my sociology exam tomorrow, I will savour this video after I give the exam, as a way to reward myself. Thank you Emma for posting so consistently. Hope you are doing well 💛🌼
I was really having an awful day (I've been incredibly stressed trying to get my portfolio together for Grad School and everything was going wrong today) but this made me feel so calm and so much better overall. Thank you for being such a lovely, safe space for me to rely on
Thank you, Emma! I'm learning English thanks to your videos and comments from your lovely subscribers! Have a successful, amazing and joyful 2024 to all!!!
cracking up at the idea of emma coming up to tom hiddleston some day, eager like a fan would, and actually saying "i loved your work... in... the dickens versus tolstoy video"
Thank you so much for the gift that is you, Emma! You make all of us happier with your videos. There is something special about you, that you make people feel better and more content ❤
I was binge-watching her recent videos when the new video notification popped up! I'm down with a fever and am unable to do much but watching her videos always makes me feel a little bit better 🥰
You can actually put your phone in airplane mode to keep Libby from returning books! It'll return as soon as your turn your connection back on, but then at least you can finish books when it's soooo close like that.
Wow it's so beautiful there!! I want to go there!! I love pigeons too. My dad used to work in New York City and he told me he would sit on the park benches on his lunch and feed them and some even ate out of his hand. I love that story and it's a great memory of my dad. 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
Toronto can be overwhelming, I felt like that when I moved there from a small town years ago. However there are some wonderful world class places to see and shop in. I love love love the ROM and the AGO . The Christmas Village Market in Historical Distillery District is something else this time of year and the used book stores are incredible, so many good finds I have made .
Wow, you are so lucky to live where you live and have an opportunity to study, to travel and do what you love. I hope you don't take a second for granted :)
That looks like a lovely time in Toronto. Back in the 1980’s, I would often take the bus from Owen Sound to spend a weekend in Toronto to see the sights. Casa Loma was a place I visited a couple times. And I would often shop at a place run by Coles called “The World’s Biggest Bookstore” near the Eaton Centre.
I have wanted to visit Toronto ever since reading Fables of Brunswick Drive by Katherine Govier. And Montreal after reading Morley Callaghan's The Loved and the Lost and Mordecai Richler's The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. I would love to see the small Ontario towns in the fiction of Alice Munro and Jane Urquhart, if not for my fear of long flights. Thanks for taking me to downtown Toronto without my leaving Scotland ! You deserve a break after all your studying.
My favourite bookstore in Toronto is David Mason books, they specialize in old books and first editions, I got a 3 book set of the divine comedy printed in Italy in 1812 and they also have 2 bookstore cats
honestly, i love all the canadian rep!! i go to school in windsor, o.n. and i sometimes take the train home as well, so when i saw you get on the train i was so excited!! also, as a canadian i haven't been to the r.o.m. either but in high school i did go to the a.g.o. for an art trip and it was amazingggg. next time you should for sure check it out. merry christmas emma, and i hope you and your family stay safe!! sidenote: i recently learned that the phrase "another think coming" is the actual correct usage of the phrase. apparently it was first used my jane austen and it's supposed to mean "think again". i know it sounds wild but it's true.
Ugh. I miss Toronto so much. This was so comforting, especially the squirrels and pigeons. We don’t have black squirrels in my province so I’m always fascinated by the ones in T.O.
Hi Emma! I wanted to tell you that I finished Elena Ferrante’s 4th Neapolitan novel today and all four are BRILLIANT- my favorite thing I read this year and I know you will enjoy the rest of the series. I’m looking forward to your best of 2021 video! Enjoy your vacation!
Ahhhh good ol' TO! I love that you were the most excited to see the pigeons. Same, same. 😂 I've never been inside Casa Loma, so thanks for taking us along! I'm afraid "another think coming" is correct, because it means "think again." It only sounds like "another thing coming" out loud because the two hard k sounds blend together. (Ack, did I just do a grammar police thing?! I'll go crawl under a rock in shame now, sorry! 😬)
Emma! This is so wholesome and beautiful💞💞💞 You are beautiful. Thank you so much for such a blast of positivity and warmth^^ You're one of the few people I can write in English without hesitation to. I love your videos, the aesthetic of Christmas in Toronto and your attitude towards the world around. You make me tear up and smile at the same time, wow... Hope you're having a wonderful time and enough rest and positive emotions, Sweetie! Lots of love💛🌙🐌
Haha you were walking literally around the corner from my work. If you bumped into me we could have had a good discussion about quite a few books! Also, as an introvert I've found a few quiet gems to soothe the soul. But, I agree we moved out of Toronto as it is stressful for quiet people :)
I lived in Toronto for 9 years and loved it! It’s going to be one year since we moved out across the country to Kelowna BC and this video brought back many memories 🖤🥰
Yea a lot of those pigeons sure are plump. They eat. Even if people don't directly feed the pigeons and the other city critters, since it's a huge city, they can do good just by getting the food people drop. They know where to go. There are always a ton of birds hanging out in this McDonald's parking lot in my area; just waiting for a stray French fry to fall out of someone's bag.
emma if the audiobook is going to expire and it returns by itself, put yourself on flight mode until you finish it! it stops it from returning. also, nespresso machines are on sale on boxing day and other shopping holidays!
Really wonderful to see that you were in my home city. You may have been at the Bay and Bloor Indigo. I too love pigeons! Some good souls feed the pigeons and most consider them an annoyance here but the downtown ones are such sweet and hungry birds that they will come up to anyone in the hopes of trusting them for some food. There's an author named James Thurber who wrote a story about pigeons I found insulting. He dissed them saying that they could not be seen for anything more than what they are which I could not disagree more with. The buildings to me are boring rather than scary but I guess as a tourist, not being used to them could make them intimidating. Anyways, I have enjoyed your booktube vlogs. You have interesting books to suggest and it has expanded my reading taste.
As always it's a lot of fun to watch your videos. I went to Casa Loma yesterday too and I can't decide if I love the library or the observatory more. Also apparently the people who lived there weren't big readers which is such a shame when they had SO much space for books (as per the tour guide thingy)
thank you for sharing your lovely toronto adventures with us!!! this was so beautiful, i hope the city treated you guys wonderfully and you had a great time
Emma! I recommend you go to the BMV next time you're in Toronto, its a three story used bookstore right next to the ROM and its so cute! There's also a lot of really cool stores and bookshops near queen street, I was there a few days ago to see the nutcracker and its amazing! definitely check out kensington market too
Your videos bring so much joy and calm to my day. I’ve had a rough one trying to put together a portfolio and this made my day. So wholesome, and your love of pigeons is soooo wholesome; as someone from a city where they’re under your feet all the time, I forget the sweetness of them, but I’m always reminded when I watch your videos with nature in to appreciate them that bit more! 🥰 (Btw: Torquay is pronounced “tour-key” in case you were interested!)
I bought Neon Gods after you talked about it in your last video and it took me only 1,5 days to finish it. Loved it. 🥰 By the way Emma Hamm also wrote a Hades and Persephone retelling. And yes, I bought it, too ... and Heart of the fae 😊

Just wanted to tell you the English Town of Torquay is pronounced "Tor-key". Great to see a bit more of Canada. I'd feel overwhelmed in Toronto too, being from a very rural area of England. I've a few of your videos to catch up on!
Odd coincidence, I actually own a set of Kipling matching those shown in the Casa Loma / Nutcracker segment, inherited from my wife's uncle. Oh, Emma, the resonance delights me. You make such wonderful videos.
I love your travel vlog. I hope you travel more! Quebec perhaps? Also, the Aggie Morton series sounds fun; I’ll ask my library director if we can purchase them.
There you are. I ve never been to Toronto, didn’t know it’s so beautiful. Those pigeons are certainly very fat by any standard. I love the green bullets the most. Must try to get the middle grade Agatha Christie. Torquay is pronounced similar to “tor..key”. As much as I love the country life, I found the metropolitan cities are much more attractive…you will like it if you give it a chance. You look great in green.
About another think/ thing coming: "Another think coming is the older of the two, dating in use to the mid-19th century, and originated in British English. Another thing coming appears to have come about in American English several decades later, probably as a result of confusion regarding the original phrase. Another thing is the more recent turn of phrase and now is more common, though it is frequently criticized.

I love that Emma loves pigeons, it’s a cute trait! I myself don’t because they ruined my garden but I like hearing their cute voice when I wake up
The way the pigeon struts when you say you’re there for a picture. She’s like yes, I’ve waited my whole life for this.
