Things that are great about Emma in no particular order: her Intelligence; literary taste; gentle demeanor; sense of humor; soft voice; nice smile; cute haircut; aesthetic taste.

Have you ever tried using a blind while you’re reading? My first OT recommended it. Basically just take a plain piece of paper (white, or whatever colour of coloured divider works best for your eyes), cut out a slot that is only the length and width of a single line of text, and place the hole over the line so that the rest of the page is blocked out. It might be worth a shot if you’ve never tried it before!
I’d also recommend the brain x 90 and return to school post concussion groups at parkwood in London On if there are other challenges you’re still dealing with. I can’t even describe how much those groups helped me!

Hi Emma! I don't usually comment, but I just wanted to say how much I love your videos. They're really calming and keep me company as I'm studying or doing whatever. It's like having conversations about books with a close friend! I fell in love with reading again through watching your videos and I won't be seen without a book in my hands. Lots of love from Finland! 💓

Ahh I love how transparent you are about grades. It seems like a lot of being a student is having this idea of good “grades” and how good grades link to being “smarter” and there are always comparisons to doing better than your peers and whatever whatever hahah but being a student means learning, right? Not grades. You’re doing amazing!!! Keep being yourself :) yeahhhh it gets dark so early now 🤢 can’t wait for the winter solstice and things will slowly become brighter again… I hope :’)

Today I had a really bad day, lots of anxiety and low self-steem due to my master's thesis among many other things. Now the day is over and I'm warm in bed watching this video... And it just made me feel validated and understood. Thank you so much for working so hard on your videos (and also for uni) and thank you for being open and talking about your problems. It really helps me and I'm sure it helps lots of other people out there. Love you ❤️

What helped me with my work and writing on a screen having a Post concussion syndrome was that I downloaded a different background for my word document (I tried different colors and found out that for me a light Red helped the best)

Hey Emma, I have a suggestion for your sore eyes. Have you considered changing the refresh rate of your monitor? The Refresh rate is the times per second your screen updates the activity in it. It is usually at 60Hz (the basic), meaning your screen refreshes 60 times per sec. If you increase it, the result is that everything in your screen gets smoother because it tracks more consistent and repeteadly all the visual stuff going on on there. You can change it from the config menu. I'll give it to ya, It might help with your eye fatigue, when you feel you ran out of ideas!
Always a gentle pleasure watching your vids!
    Cheers

I had a concussion by hitting my head into a brick wall as a kid and it was never checked out and at 10 I was diagnosed with migraines, I may not have the exact same "condition" was you but I do feel your pain! I also struggle everyday with my migraines and headaches and have had to reduce my studying from 100% to only 50% which is sad but necessary, but we're all strong for fighting with it and getting through it! You're not alone ❤️❤️❤️

Hey sweetie so sorry to hear you're having such a hard time. I get migraines and what helps me for reading is I use a book lamp with an Amber bulb instead of the LED ones. It's so easy on the eyes and makes reading easier and the light is so cozy and you can adjust the brightness. Also what I do when my eyes have had enough is I wet a facecloth with cool water then put witch hazel on it then lay down close my eyes and put the facecloth over them and it is so cool and soothing. Hope you see this and hope it helps. Sending you hugs! 🥰🥰🥰❤️💚❤️💚

I experience anxiety and feeling sick in public too. It used to get really bad so bad that I decided to get help via counselling. One of the biggest things that helped me was to do breathing exercises this controls the the adrenaline caused by the fight or flight response of my body and brain - I was actually unconsiously restricting my own breathing - holding my breath - and the breathing exercises reversed that and also gave me something to focus on. These can be done anywhere - no one will notice me changing my breathing patterns when I'm on a bus etc. The other thing was refusing to give in to negative thoughts. I would anticipate the anxiety and anticipate having a bad time beforehand so once I recognised that I had to forcefully refuse to allow myself to do that replace them with mantra's, or something else completely and not give them room in my head. I'll never be 100 free of it the tendency is always there but it's now become a once in a while thing not an every day thing. I hope this all wasn't TMI but I suffered from this for years and really wished I had gotten help earlier.

I don't know if this could help with the ghost image but it has done wonders for my headaches and migraine so I thought I'd share.
Try to get a blue light filter on your computer and laptop and I mean a thick one like, not the kind that most smartphones have these days but the one that actually makes your screen yellow. It helps a lot when you have to write stuff.
Also if you're reading a lot on screens consider an e-reader they're a lot easier on the eyes due to their very low refresh rates and there are a lot of fonds created to help with migraines and dizziness.

I was just sitting down after making some breakfast and wanting a nice video to watch and you uploaded ! 😊
I really enjoy your videos and appreciate the time you spend making them . Your passion for literature and excitement over books is like the embodiment of how I feel inside but don’t get a chance to often express :)
I want to give you a big hug and hope you can find the help you need to feel better and heal from the affects of the concussion .
Thank you so much for posting school related content I’m in my 30’s and am starting college next year in January for spring semester I love reading and literature and I will be pursuing digital media and my electives I’ve decided will center on literature , creative writing and Spanish as my foreign language .
You are inspirational and are giving me courage while you may feel down at times and maybe don’t have the confidence you need you don’t know how much courage and happiness you are bringing to those around you .
Thanks again ,sorry this was so long but I’ve never commented on one of your videos before at least I don’t think I have and this was a culmination of all my thoughts 😊 best wishes .

Hi Emma! I just wanted to say that for the last several months, I’ve been browsing through many channels on booktube and after discovering your channel, I have to say you are by far the very best! Your content is so relaxing and informative. And even though we have different preferences in what we read - you seem to be more into classics, poetry, literary fiction, (I could be wrong) and I love those genres too but I usually prefer contemporary nonfiction - I always look forward to your videos! Thank you so much for what you do. Forgive me for all of the run-on sentences. 😂

I don't have post-concussion syndrome but my eyes are very sensitive to screens and light so I can at least commiserate with your pain a little. Breaks from those triggers, naps and warm showers help me. I hope they might help you 💜 also, your special glasses look great on you, don't even trip girl 👌🏽

sadly, i know absolutely nothing about post concussion syndrome. however, i do get terrible headaches whenever i have to spend a lot of time in front of my screen (which is often) and blue light filters have saved my life. i use one that is free and the cool thing is that you can input your location so the filter changes throughout the day ♡
hope this helps! i missed your uni vlogs so much. you're such an inspiration.

  • @jenvcampbell

This isn't the same but just mentioning in case it's helpful. I have a degenerative condition which means I'm losing my sight so I use voice recognition etc. My corneal abrasions give me headaches when reading/using screens; nothing I can do about the books but I sometimes find it helpful to invert the colours on my screens - both phone and computer. I imagine the screen is worse for you because it's the light that's imprinting, so if you're able to make the background black and the text white, maybe it won't be so bad? Worth a try anyway. xx

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

(Should say that the invert function is in the accessibility settings of both your phone and your computer. x)

Thank you for your videos Emma, I just found your channel a few months ago and made me fall in love with reading again. When I was in my twenties I struggled with major anxiety attacks. It still tries to get me sometimes now. I can feel it coming on like people feel migraines coming. The way I get out of the spiral is to take deep breaths and tell myself repeatedly “you’re ok.” When you sit and think about the anxiety it makes the spiral so much worse! Don’t feed the spiral. I’d also suggest a weighted blanket if you don’t have one already. 💜

Maybe you could try making the background of your essay a dark grey colour, and the text itself a lighter grey to minimise the contrast; or just make the text a lighter grey on the white background - obviously you can then format it ‘normally’ before you send/print it off. I suffer with headaches and migraines and this is something that helps me 🙂

If you prefer writing on paper, you can do that and then scan the thing as a pdf. Some apps recognise the text and let you copy paste it (e.g - Adobe Scan). So you can copy paste it in a doc and tweak anything if required and submit it. It isn't that much better than directly writing on a screen, but I hope it helps!

My partner has some eye/vision issues from a concussion / brain inflammation, and has seen a functional neurologist which has helped. Also eating plenty of healthy fats throughout the day, like avocado, nuts, coconut oil, and organic grass fed beef if you eat meat, as the brain thrives on fats, can help.

Hello Emmie! Could you use the dictation function on your laptop to ‘speak’ your essays and have the computer read them back to you? Hi Emma, I don't know what post-concussion syndrome or seeing ghost images is like, but I'm studying interaction design, which involves a lot of UI stuff and usually for vision problems we would consider things like color, contrast, size and proximity. So I'm thinking you could try having the background and the text in different colors with different levels of contrast, try different fonts and different font sizes and even in the same document have variations in these things to break up the "black-white-black-white" - pattern. Wish you the best 💖

  • @siobhanphoenix9789

Emma thank you so much for all you have been doing this entire time post concussion. You are a trooper! Do you think that trying an app where you speak and it records what you say into written form would help? You would likely still need to edit afterwards but it would cut down your screen time. If it helps I would take breaks before the symptoms come up if possible to look at different distances away such as outside on your veranda. It isn't the same thing as a concussion but when my eyes started to change gradually to astigmatism screens would really bother me. So I would look away, look outside as far of a distance with my view that I could. I did need glasses which I wear now but it was something my eye doctor recommended to do. It's good for everyone to do really because it's good for the eyes to look at different distance rather than up close all the time. With headaches put ice packs or the flexible magic bag ice packs around your neck and on your head for about 15 minutes. I was also given a tip of putting my feet and hands in warm water as I did this to help with headaches. After yoga taking the time to lay in savasana with an eye pillow that has a filler made out of lavender, buckwheat, beans or combination of can feel nice. But as always talk to your doctor and or a knowledgeable yoga teacher that knows about what poses to avoid post concussion and what ones can help. Any kind of exercise should be discussed with the trainer and doctor to find out if these things are making you worse in some way. From my training as a yoga teacher I would say to avoid inversions where more blood would be pooling to your head. You likely have already talked to a dietition or your doc about how diet can help or harm healing from a concussion or post concussion but if you haven't it's a good idea. Unfortunately things like caffeine and sugars seem to always make things worse. I used to drink caffeine but after the initial pain killer activity which I always wanted for various reasons I would have a headache. I used to have a headache every single day because I actually am sensitive to caffeine, it's not good for anxiety, and I have pmdd sooooo....WAHHHHH! I would think that because caffeine narrows the blood vessels in the brain that it would make something like healing from a concussion or post concussion worse unfortunately. It is really hard going off caffeine of any kind. I know I have done it multiple times in my life and finally I knew I had to quit it for good. The amount in chocolate isn't so much of a problem for me. But no caffeine means better quality sleep, equaling less stress on you, your body and especially your brain and eyes over all. And when your older if you get an overactive bladder which a lot of people do especially women it helps to not drink caffeine anymore for how much of a diuretic it is. In the present it also is not a good thing for you to dehydrate your body and therefore "brain". I like the night light yellow screen because it causes less strain on the eyes and you can put it at any level you prefer. I hope you find what you need to do. There are a number of health issues I have had to deal with that have taken time to research which includes being mindful and making a note of the patterns of the symptoms, what triggers them and how long it takes for them to be triggered, what doesn't help and what does. Always listen to your body and listen to your instincts when someone who is not a professional gives you advice but even doubt the professional if you feel that they aren't appropriately listening to you and taking your symptoms seriously. I hope you have talked to a doc about your symptoms to be sure that having these symptoms this long after the injury is to be expected. If they are not I would want scans done and then depending on what comes up or not I would want to discuss other possibilities with my doctor which can create the kind of vision you speak of. I am rooting for you because your passion for books has been an inspiration and comfort to me over the last year or so. I have always had a passion for books but your videos encourage me more! And they get me into the zen of planning my tbr and reading from many different genres. I went on my first library book box outing a few weekends back after I saw your video on doing on and it was fun! I wish that the boxes in my city had as good variety as yours seem to though! It's such a cozy thing to do! Wishing you peace, healing, and reading with ease

I forgot to add also that cool cucumbers or a cool cloth on your eyes can help wonders! This is another thing my eye doctor suggested for me when I felt like I wanted to tear my eyes out and I literally was brought to a point of sitting with my hands over my eyes because watching the screen with words or youtube on my tv screen was driving me nuts. It feels so good. Looking at screens as well as winter air dries the eyes out so even though it likely won't cure everything that's going on it will likely help you to feel more comfortable on your eyes if you keep a humidifier going and use saline drops throughout the day. Good luck!

Emmie dear ❤️, we all feel for you and what you face on a daily basis.
I will say most everyone has something they struggle with. But just don't talk about. And as you get older...lol 😂...but that is not to minimize your challenges. It is just to give you commiseration committee vibes. No. That is not a thing.
The only thing I can think of is audio tools. Like that vision scanner that scans a page/paragraph and reads it back. I am a VISUAL PERSON and usually prefer to read rather than listen. Other than that I would just do POMODORO studying. To see if that helps. We are praying for you. NEVER SURRENDER.🙈

Anxiety is something I struggle with. But was a lot worse a few years ago. I bought some books 📚, DUH 🙄, to READ about the condition and what to do about it. I also was BLESSED w a couple of good friends to talk about it. Here's a couple of thoughts...
    Anger, resentment, bitterness- past links
Fear, Rage- (Flight, Fight response)- current links
    Anxiety, worry, panic- future links.
Anxiety episodes is an over active THOUGHT cycle that focuses on FUTURE CHAOS, CATASTROPHES OR CALAMITES. That you FEEL little control over. (As if we have control.)
Not eating, sleeping and exercising properly exacerbates the problem.
Anxiety bout in February started producing muscle twinges in my chest. Of course I thought "Cardiac Arrest!" I had to spend time w friends to be distracted. And started practicing MINDFULNESS again. I also try to nip ANXIETY in the bud before it starts. (Haven't had a twinge in 10 months.)
Sometimes that means watching movies from my DVD library, Thrift Therapy or READING. OR PHONE A FRIEND. ONLY PEEPS THAT HAVE OR STILL EXPERIENCE (D) ANXIETY TRULY GET IT.
Guided Meditation on YT has been a God send. I listen to ASMRs. Last night I feel asleep listening to train trip during blizzard.
I love: Orient Express + dining car (ASMR)...
Take care. 🥶 Winter blues can be hard. But you make it SUNNY 😎...🇺🇲🌎🇨🇦❤️🎄

I have some ideas, I'm sure you've already heard or thought of them yourself already but here goes:
    1. Change the background in your writing software, so that the background is completely black (can even be used in full screen mode), like dark mode. The pages become black and the text white. It doesn't affect the document itself colour-wise, it's just a mode in the system. If white is too much, maybe you could try adjusting to a gray shade that is more comfortable.
    2. Get a typewriter and write your essays out on them :) You can write drafts and edit by hand, and type it again when it's all done. Kind of old school, but that's how they used to do it, and it's really fun and almost therapeutic. Get a modern one or an old one, whichever you like.
    3. Write out your essays by hand or typewriter, and then when it's all done, you could ask a friend or family to type it up on a computer for you. Maybe not the easiest in the long run, but still an option for now. Especially since you seem to have such supportive people around you! :)
