    I'm so envious of the little libraries in your town. I live in a whole dang city, and go to different parts of the city on the regular and always check out the library boxes... the number of times I've gotten anything worthwhile, I can count on one hand. It seems people where I live just use the libraries as a dumping ground for their damaged or extremely-old-but-not-in-a-cute-way books, or there will just be like... one or two books in the whole library.

      We definitely live in a city, not a town 😂 and every time I go to these little free libraries there is nothing good in them! I don't know how she's always finding such good stuff in there

      I’ve found that ones in public areas usually are a bit lacking. Little libraries in front of people’s homes tend to be better because the steward has 24access and tends to keep better care of it and they usually only get neighborhood traffic so less opportunity for bad behavior like people taking every single book for themselves etc

    I'm currently reading Dune because my dad decided that we would go watch the film in the cinema in a few days and I wanted to read the the book first. I'm about half the way through now (I think the film covers just over half of it) and while it is a sci-fi book I feel like it isn't really the main focus in the book. Sci-fi is not a genre I've read much but I'm really enjoying it so far.

    • @brandonatchison4769
      @brandonatchison4769 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it's classed as soft sci-fi and it's definitely a great introduction to the genre.

    As someone who has read his fair share of Mishima`s work. I recommend you start with Confessions of a Mask. It was his second novel and it made him famous overnight. It`s also a novel of his that is somewhat autobiographical (like one of his other novels-Sun and Steel) and its the best place to start your journey in discovering this unique and perplexing writer.

    • @emmiereads
      @emmiereads  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      thank you!! Definitely think that’s the one I’ll go with✨

  • @georgedriscoll4658
    @georgedriscoll4658 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    I would definitely start with ‘Confessions of a mask’ as it truly exemplifies Mishima’s raw skill in describing the everyday reality. While it is quite graphic (even though much less than ‘The sailor who fell from grace with the sea’), it really is a good start to get into Mishima’s voice and style. 📖😁

    I LOVE BLUE PERIOD SO MUCH! IT LITERALLY REIGNITED MY LOVE FOR PAINTING AGAIN!!♡

    A subscriber from Japan, and I have been enjoying your channel so much. I love your passion for books, and you encouraged me to go back to reading after years of being away from it. It took me a while to get used to it, concentrating on the words on the page was more difficult than I thought, but now I feel I’m back on track! Thank you so much for what you do! And so happy you like Mishima, he is one of the writers I want to get back to one of these days. I don’t even remember what I read ( it’s literally, decades ago) but his writing left me with a shock, and that I remember….

    I just can't belive you found blue period in a place like that, besides being a fairly recent manga series it's also just so good. I've been keeping up with the newest chapters and so far it's amazing...the artslye is so unique and the visual metaphors.... I've been meaning to get my hands on the physical editions for a while now. Ah! It also got an anime adaptation, I believe you can watch it on Netflix :)
    Also, do read confessions of a mask first it was a five star read for me and I believe it is his first novel.

    Haven't read many Mishima, but my fav is The Sound of the Waves, very refreshing, innocuous and adorable story, which is very rare for him. Confessions of a Mask is his first novel I believe, usually the first novel will have the motif and theme that the author loves the most, so maybe it's a good entry read for you as well.

    Digging the music choices in this one, Em. Copyright free Tim Burton style jams 🎶
    (Also UnderMajorDomo Minor is a decent novel. 3.5/5 for me. Would love to hear your thoughts on it in future videos… ooh, and as you’ve just mentioned it in the video, The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea is fantastic! Definitely advise reading it soon!)

    I don't usually comment on YT videos but... YES!!! I am so glad you took BLUE PERIOD! It's a really different manga -- it goes on and talks about what is "talent" and what it could entail when you say to someone that they are "talented" -- I don't want to give you spoilers but Netflix bought the anime series so if you ever have time, or just to chill, check it out ✨

  • @FaeryLaume

    Your previous vlog about Little Free Library Boxes is what inspired me to use it a way to rehome a huge unhaul from my shelves over this last year. I had six grocery bags full of books in the back of my car and every time I went into the city to run errands and had extra time, I went to the boxes in a different area or neighborhood. I just got rid of the last handful of books the other day. Usually I'd leave one or more books than I took each time. Sometimes I wouldn't take any books, but I'd still leave books. I found books that will be new to my shelves, books for other family and friends, and even books for a friend's free library box she runs for a women's shelter. It turned the unhauling into multiple adventures and happy stories.

    So envious- this doesn't really happen in London, UK. I know of two boxes I donate to but never find anything, so I tend to donate to thrift stores which may still be too expensive for some people who need to read. Great book haul- you MUST read The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. Keep up the good work!

    That's such a good haul! I read Dune in college and only read the first one because I didn't know it was a series lol. It's really complex with a lot of ideas regarding politics and religion. Also watched the new film last night and it was decent. Timothée Chalamet as Paul was a good choice. Anyway my dream is to build a free little library when I own a house. 💗

    • @GabrielLopes-dz6xr
      @GabrielLopes-dz6xr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I Love the Chalamet boy in the film, he is really talented, and yes, the perfect Paul. To me the best performance is from Rebeca Ferguson; and the best casting choice was Javier Bardem as Stilgar (wow).
      Theres something that you missed in the adaptation, something that it was a big problem to you?
      And, with no spoilers, what was your favourite scene?

    Also, I read Dune when I was 12 and working my way through the scifi shelf at my local library. It was a slog, but from what I hear, it deserves a reread now that I’m better equipped to understand it 😂

    I feel sad that Night and Day was left behind, but only because Virginia Woolf is one of my favourite authors (and only if you haven't read it before). It's the most conventional of her novels, before she really started to break out into her own with her third novel, Jacob's Room.

    Fantastic video. I'm in the UK. A charity opened a Man Shed a year or two ago - a place for older men to go and practice their carpentry skills & they built little libraries, so there are now about a dozen in the local area. A new one opened in the next town over, a few weeks ago, so i went to have a look and found SEVEN Agatha Christies. ( I replaced them with seven books from home)

    This video inspired me to take some books to a local free library, I'm sure it'll be fun, as I've never looked in any of my free little local libraries.

    Blue period is awesome, it deals with a lot of different issues with youth in general, even sexuality and really finding yourself and what you love, which i find beautiful. And I really like it because it transcends just "high school", which most series focus on in manga or anime. Its also very real, at least for me, with what I went through while finishing high school and deciding on what to do with my life, so I found it a relatable.
    The art knowledge as well, stuff i would've never learned in my life, i got a little grasp of from reading this, and the art is just amazing.
    Please do give thoughts on what you think about it after you read ittt.

    Amazing little libraries, and amazing books you got. You live in such a beautiful place.
    Where I live they just end up filled with technical books nobody wants anymore, such a shame.
    When you read Dune, check out the David Lynch film. It is very good.

    Love the excitement for Dune. It is one of my favorite books. Frank Herbert creates a beautifully complex universe. If you ever have the opportunity to read the illustrated version you should. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
