It's CES 23 now, and Asus have just announced a new version of the Z13 is coming with more recent mobile cards. No real details yet. There might be a bigger battery. I think the most important things will be a) they're keeping the line going which suggests it sold enough which is awesome for 2-in-1 detachable competition and b) the existing ones might get a deep discount so if there's little functional difference that could help.
This is a pleasant surprise. I actually have the i7-12700H version of the Flow Z13 and for some triple A games and regular day to day work I have no complaints. The only thing I hate about this machine is the XG Mobile which is a constant headache for me to get working properly.
The advantages is it’s half the price and being Bluetooth you can use it away from the device and it doesn’t use the battery of your surface pro, plus the keyboard lighting is nice. The disadvantage is you need to charge it
I used this a lot, and mounted two joycons to the side of it. It was fine, but the bluetooth on it is pretty bad. You actually can't even use joycons because adding a 2nd BT device give the 1st one heavy latency.
Hey there, I have a question about the battery life of the Flow Z13. When you did your usual battery life testing, although you mentioned that you put it onto power saving settings, what about the silent/quite mode on ASUS armory crate? Would that make a noticeable different in addition to the power saving settings or does putting it on power saving settings automatically change it to silent/quiet mode? On a side note, this video was very informatic. Thank you :)
I personally think the 1200p is the better option. The screen still looks sharp as it in only 13" you get 120hz (the 4k is only 60hz) and games will play at its native resolution. The 4k will be slightly sharper obviously and has better gamut but it will also eat more battery.
How bad was the ghosting? I know some people mentioned the display's response time is 30ms. I really like this device and I need the portability while also being able to play esports games. But as a secondary device, is it worth paying 1000$ CAD more to get the 2023 version? The only major upgrades will be the display, slightly better processor and rtx 4050 laptop. I feel like the processor and gpu upgrade will not make a big difference for games like valorant, lol, apex, ow2. I'm just worried about the display...
The screen response was average at best. I am not sure what other laptops you have tested but I would say the ghosting is on par with the Blade 14 1080p display. The newer version display will be much faster

Even on their website they're offering it for £1,300 atm with the HD rather than 4K screen, and a 1TB SSD and 16Gb. John Lewis have it for the same price. I can't imagine many people would upgrade that SSD to be honest. I looked and I couldn't even find a 2Tb. In the event of a failure, that could be a problem (but you could take a clone before you need it I suppose). Of course, the fact you can replace it means they could send you a replacement and it's job done.
yeah, at the moment 2tb are hard to get hold of but will be more common soon. I would be surprised if you couldn't just do a fresh windows 11 install but there may be some drivers they don't have listed for some reason 😕

As a tablet user, one of my expectations is good battery life, 8-10hrs a prerequisite, so as a tablet, the Z13 is a fail. The price has fallen, probably due to meagre sales, but I suspect many people have reached the same conclusion. The SP8 I have is no battery champ, but I expect 33% or longer battery life on the Surface. But, this is for gamers, though 1.5 hours on battery gaming seems like it would not be very useful. A niche product that will do well to survive.
Yes battery life and weight are probably its weaknesses and it definitely is a niche product. I personally prefer performance over battery as I am usually never far from an outlet so this product is great for me but I can understand completely your conclusion. And yes even the SP8 and 9 battery are not great when you compare it to apple silicon, it is one area I wish windows machines could improve as a whole (as even though I am not bothered about battery life for me I know how much other users require it)
Total Newb here, need a decent device to mainly run CAD software, such as Shaper3D, my intention being to teach myself how to use it to design bicycle frames. I come from a traditional Technical Drawing background, so needs to be as intuitive as possible using a pen, Shaper3D seems to bridge that gap the best. Am looking at a surface device would this be my best option? (Not great with Apple products)
I also come from a technical drawing background but due to a change in career to IT management and then TH-cam I am not unto date with CAD software. Most CAD and 3d heavy apps heavily benefit from an Nvidia card so this 2in1 should handle it well. Drawing on it is good too just like the surface pro, just rip the keyboard off and put the kick stand right back and drawing is comfortable
unfortunately not which is my biggest gripe with surface, they only get intel integrated gfx which are pretty poor! I can do light photoshop and very light blender with it but video editing or any heavy 3d work is a slide show :(
I have this Z13 with Core i9 and 4k display, along with XG mobile. However, looking at the numbers on Cinebench under Turbo mode at 07:54, my Z13 can outperform the Threadripper 1950X at around 17k-ish. This Z13 also outperforms my HP DL380 G9 dual Xeon 2680 server. 2 things I think Asus intentionally placed limits on this tablet: 1. 16GB RAM top (which I may say it's enough but not big enough) 2. It's using 2230 SSD form factor which is having max cap at 1TB (fairly not good, but they compensate it with microsd card that I managed to populate it with a fast 512GB microsd) Overall, ASUS had done a great job with Z13. Try to fold the keyboard til it covers the backside of the Z13. It will tell you that airflow is being blocked. And the small window on the back gives gap between keyboard and backside just in case we need to do so in short periode of time, letting some air to flow inside the Z13.
Btw, another good thing about this Z13 is it has Thunderbolt 4 port which I can easily connect the Z13 to an external RTX A5000 to do work. Still, the 16GB of memory feels like driving a Lamborghini on small countryside road when running DaVinci Resolve, Blender, and Rhino. It's still a good companion to my HP Zbook 17, though.
i wonder how many of these they sell, the market is someone who wants mobile PC gaming, a tablet PC, and productivity.. and they can only have one device
It is a very niche product as a gaming laptop games better and a surface pro is more portable but if you are someone who wants a more powerful surface pro then this is it! I love my surface pro but wish it had a discrete gpu as intel gfx are woeful 😂
I would love to see the AMD Ryzen and GTX 1650. Or even the i5 version without a dedicated GPU. The GTX 1650 is $1150 and you can pick up the XG mobile $800-$1000 depending if you go for rtx 3080 or RX 6850. Kind of my dream setup. Leave the CG mobile and a monitor at home bring the flow to work but still be able to game on those rare down times
Putting all these features on a tablet is great, I'm glad you spoke about trade-offs but I wish you talk about build quality. Surface pro look premium and like a machine that will last 10 years, I'm scared this might just look inferior and breakdown sooner. I seek enlightenment here.
i'll take six of them so I can have one on the go and the rest for my bathrooms. Ohh and I guess I'll need one for my Mister Meowsers as it seems he has grown tired of chasing fish on his iPad pro. "Alexa, please add 7 fully loaded Asus ROG Flow Z13's to my current order alongside the Ferraris and filleted unicorn-steaks"
I love lower power 2 in 1. They only need a good wifi card for the cloud and tv screen projection. I mostly use them for low indie games and visual novels on the go.
Love the laptop but i hate the Egpu solution. Egpu over thunderbolt 3/4 or any proprietary port is still a money waste imo. The cheapest Egpu over thunderbolt full setup i can think up would be over 300$, and for that much money you can have a nice gpu for your desktop already.
me too, I guess they are waiting for next years CPUs. Sorry if you thought it was new, it has just taken us a long time to cover this one as we have had so many machines we wanted to cover this year!
problem with amd is there is no thunderbolt but hopefully the new one will have a usb4 that can be back compatible to tb. the x13 have the new amd's but they used heat pipe so it's a bit louder. i guess this one is one of a kind. i hope so, i just ordered one :)
The more I've been learning about this device, the more I've felt that the GPD Win Max 2 is better for its stated purpose. Smaller form factor, more pocketable, lighter. It may not be as powerful, but you're more likely to enjoy gaming on it, and especially travel with it But I would like to see an OEM (It doesn't have to be GPD or ASUS) make a new device with the Win Max 2's form factor and the Flow Z13's specs. Would pay the premium for a design that gets the most out of something that's actually playable as a handheld
@@Akashinity For me it was all dependent on the black Friday or cyber Monday deal and Z13 with the 3080 I thought it was the best deal for me. I have many laptops so it all depends on your needs? For the amount I paid I feel it is well worth it.
I totally love this! I hate playing on notebook keyboards. You can't angle it, it's hot and usually, it sucks as well. 😆 With this, I can connect my own keyboard and don't have to worry about pressing the notebook keyboard with it. 😆 I just wish it would have more power. For the money, 40W 3050 Ti doesn't sound like much. At least 3060 would be nice. Preferably 3070. 😆
Yeah, 40w doesn't seem a lot when you compare it to a gaming laptop but if you compare it to any tablet, 2in1 or 13" ultrabook you realise how impressive it is. Only the 14" G14 and blade really improve on this but then you have massive fan noise to match
@@MashITTech Agreed. I've got an XPS 13 9310 with Xe at the moment and even that thing can play some lighter games as well. So I'm thinking this could be quite a machine for it's size. Just plonk this thing on the table, connect a keyboard and mouse and you are good to go gaming! I love the minimalistic nature of this. However, some reviews say the screen is rather slow. That's been holding me back a little bit, since I spoiled myself with the 240Hz Alienware last year, HAHA. How did you enjoy playing on it?
@@MashITTech Speaking of Blade 14, I'm thinking whether I to get the Blade or the Z13. I like the idea of the detachable keyboard and I already got a desktop PC, so I wouldn't mind the lower performence that much. I love the portability, but still.. the Blade 14 seems quite a bit more powerful for a similar price (used). What would you pick?
Screen wise. yes it is slower than a modern fast 144hz+ screen, I can see a little ghosting when fast paced gaming such as apex But it is a million times better than the Surface Pro 8/9 120hz or the MacBook Pro 120hz (but very slow mini led) screens and I really enjoyed gaming on it. In answer to your other question, I have and love the blade 14 with 5900 & 3070 but there is a lot to consider. Pros of the Blade is GPU performance and reasonable CPU performance. Battery life, form factor and ports. The disadvantage is Dim screen (Mine is just over 300 nits and I work in a bright environment and with it has another 100nits). runs hot and loud, the left palm rest can get bothersome and WASD keys are hot. Severe throttling if used on USBC and the included PSU is bulky and unwieldy. There is never one perfect laptop so I guess you have to try and work out what you really want from each. And I also like the fact that the keyboard never gets hot on the ROG and I can rip it off and use my 65% mech keyboard whilst gaming!
Too bad it only has 4GB of VRAM. I'm was Surface (SP3, SP4, SP7) user (Their screen freaking malfunctions) and currently using a ROG Zephyrus S with a 1060 6GB. I was thinking of getting this until I saw it only has 4GB VRAM, but I still can't convince myself to get the G14 with the 6700/6800S since most of my work relies on CUDA. It is a shame that ASUS didn't include a 3050Ti with 6G VRAM, or better still, a 3060 6G with an Ryzen CPU.
So many people are getting 1-3 hours of use with this device. Cool concept but hard pass for such terrible battery life. Asus should have put a i7-1280p processor instead of the other useless desktop processor!
yes battery life is its Achilles heel. I personally prefer performance to battery so this suits me but I think they certainly should have had a P option like you mention for those that prioritise battery life
It totally depends what you are looking for! Gaming laptop would be much better value but as this is the same price as a surface pro 9 if I wanted a 2in1 I would choose this

2. It's using 2230 SSD form factor which is having max cap at 1TB (fairly not good, but they compensate it with microsd card that I managed to populate it with a fast 512GB microsd)
Overall, ASUS had done a great job with Z13.
I’m waiting for rtx 40 mobile gpu with this tablet form factor
today version does come w 4050 and 4060, and updated nebula display
roughly maybe 5x better than handheld, in gaming
i wonder how many of these they sell, the market is someone who wants mobile PC gaming, a tablet PC, and productivity.. and they can only have one device
It is a very niche product as a gaming laptop games better and a surface pro is more portable but if you are someone who wants a more powerful surface pro then this is it! I love my surface pro but wish it had a discrete gpu as intel gfx are woeful 😂
Well for engineering students it's awesome
I would love to see the AMD Ryzen and GTX 1650. Or even the i5 version without a dedicated GPU. The GTX 1650 is $1150 and you can pick up the XG mobile $800-$1000 depending if you go for rtx 3080 or RX 6850. Kind of my dream setup. Leave the CG mobile and a monitor at home bring the flow to work but still be able to game on those rare down times
the power button is also a fingerprint sensor
Yes
Wow and I though I was rich 🤣
Can I have It

No sorry, we are only a small channel and need to sell the laptops to fund our next purchases
4:14 USB 2 port?? Well I'll let that sink in for awhile.
It’s a bit of an odd choice but I just use it for a mouse dongle
What's Microsoft Surface doing here?
what do you mean? I am a surface pro user and I discuss how this is similar to a surface in the form factor whilst being a lot more powerful.
Totally agree which is why I didn’t bother ordering the egpu version
Oh, I thought this was a new generation. I wish there was a new version with AMD.
me too, I guess they are waiting for next years CPUs. Sorry if you thought it was new, it has just taken us a long time to cover this one as we have had so many machines we wanted to cover this year!
@@MashITTech No problem. It's still nice to see another perspective.
problem with amd is there is no thunderbolt but hopefully the new one will have a usb4 that can be back compatible to tb.
the x13 have the new amd's but they used heat pipe so it's a bit louder. i guess this one is one of a kind. i hope so, i just ordered one :)
The more I've been learning about this device, the more I've felt that the GPD Win Max 2 is better for its stated purpose. Smaller form factor, more pocketable, lighter. It may not be as powerful, but you're more likely to enjoy gaming on it, and especially travel with it
But I would like to see an OEM (It doesn't have to be GPD or ASUS) make a new device with the Win Max 2's form factor and the Flow Z13's specs. Would pay the premium for a design that gets the most out of something that's actually playable as a handheld
Just bought one
Hope you enjoy it :)
Is it worth it bro, or should I go for flow x13
@@Akashinity For me it was all dependent on the black Friday or cyber Monday deal and Z13 with the 3080 I thought it was the best deal for me. I have many laptops so it all depends on your needs? For the amount I paid I feel it is well worth it.
I totally love this! I hate playing on notebook keyboards. You can't angle it, it's hot and usually, it sucks as well. 😆
With this, I can connect my own keyboard and don't have to worry about pressing the notebook keyboard with it. 😆
I just wish it would have more power.
@@MashITTech That's what I'm talking about! You just rip the keyboard off and use your custom keyboard instead. Without all the heat is a bonus.
Badly want this device, I’m leaving in Asia. Here you can buy base model for 1600$.
Why not get a 3060 g14? Although I would wait for CES 2023 before making a purshase now.
Lenovo ThinkPad vs ASUS Republic of Gamers
An innovative product let down by a poor webcam & inbuilt microphone array.
this kind of power on 13 inches 2 in 1 is not sensible. if it was 15 inch it would be better.
The thermals were well in check and asus have tuned the power well for the chassis, I was really impressed with it
So many people are getting 1-3 hours of use with this device. Cool concept but hard pass for such terrible battery life. Asus should have put a i7-1280p processor instead of the other useless desktop processor!
yes battery life is its Achilles heel. I personally prefer performance to battery so this suits me but I think they certainly should have had a P option like you mention for those that prioritise battery life
3050ti hhahahaahaha. Hello, super Performance
i9 12900k 3050 gpu, nah not worth it
It totally depends what you are looking for! Gaming laptop would be much better value but as this is the same price as a surface pro 9 if I wanted a 2in1 I would choose this
