      I'm not a botanist, but maybe if you buy a meter tall young trees (yeah, they are more likely to survive if you measure them in meters :) lets say 50, and water them for a first month, they would have more chance to grow tall. Do that for next few years and voila, you have a nice addition to your forest.

    Fifty five years ago, I used to work on a farm in Illinois. Every spring we would "chunk" the fields. The frost heaves would bring rocks of all sizes to the surface and one of the steps before planting would be to remove, by hand, these rocks. Tossed in a tractor pulled wooded wagon, the amount collected from 400 acres would build several houses. I don't know where the term "chunking" came from, but it was appropriate, since we picked up chunks of rocks before we plowed.

Like today I was sharpening my vintage maul I nick named "Big V" because it has a V stamped into it, still no idea what brand it is...anywho my neibor walks over chatting with me and asks why I spent the time getting an old maul like that instead of just going to home depot and I start talking about how well older tools are made and how good it feels to hold and use a piece of history and I remembered I got that maul years ago because of your review on mauls back in....god I think 2016 I think? Man time flies! I'm rambling now...just wanna say thanks for your years of videos my friend! I hope one day to own land like you have and watch my family grow!

    Thank You for sharing the update on the trees. Here in Idaho, my dad would plant apple, chestnut trees, and some berry plants at selected random locations in the forest. He did to attract wildlife and to provide emergency food for us in case of troubled times. Forty years later some are still there hidden for us and even his great grandchildren to use. He was a retired Air Force intelligence officer. He always said if we we’re not careful China would take us down without firing a shot. That was in the 1970s.

    cattails in your pond are a sign of the natural progression as the pond fills in and becomes a bog then solid land. They are a shallow water plant, the best way to get rid of them is dig out the muck and deepen the pond, you also need steep banks to keep this from recurring.

    Love the overview! I'm jealous of your property 🙂
    Btw, if you or Jack want to dig into something for getting more trees and use on that land, look into permaculture.
    There's also a method taught in it called "swales" that are basically ditches on contour. It helps hold onto water and you plant trees beside them to help get trees going.
    Just a thought for something to check out 🙂
    Oh, and ignore the "hippy" element of permaculture. It's just a subgroup that kind of took it to be something that it really isn't.

    There are "standalone" drip irrigation systems that can help you with the plants, its basically a closed plastic donut tub with several cotton wicks in its bottom, you fill it once, and it provides the tree with water and firtilizer for a couple months, modest amounts, but makes a difference, and the body of the tub also blocks the sun and evaporation area

    Cattails are an excellent source of food and they help clean the water. I transplanted a bunch to the shore line of my lake. There's a lot of good recipes for cattails online.

  • @hunterpowell2148
    @hunterpowell2148 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cody, you can pull those cattails, but the issue you are going to have is the depth of your pond. You can look up the critical angle, or depth for your area. Basically it takes into account the angle at which the sun hits the earth in your area, and how far it can penetrate water. The closer to the equator, the more direct the rays are and the deeper they go. As long as your pond is that depth, you should eliminate growth of cattails and other aquatic plants from growing from the bottom of your pond. If the pond isn’t deep enough, you will fight them constantly. Good luck.

    I have an idea for the cat tails in the pond. If you had a steel cable and weighted it with 4 x 56lb grain weights and laid it across the pond and then pulled the ends together you could haul the cable and the weights with the tractor and drag the stuff out by the roots. You have a beautiful property.. Being British, I love "London Bridge is falling down" :>)

  • @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors
    @PastoralHomesteadOutdoors 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the video. We do lake and pond conservation work in New Mexico and West Texas. For the cattails we have determined the easiest way to get them out is to rent a small excavator (when possible) and rip them out. You can also dredge and deepen your pond while you do this. We always make sure to haul the material downstream so it doesn’t end up back in there after a rain. I hope you are well, we pray for you and your family. Blessings

    I've got a problem with cattails and other things growing in my small pond and last year I hit them with Round-Up and it seems to have worked pretty well. My guess is the Round-Up didn't do real bad things to the water as it was more of a topical for the plant leaves with just some minor overspray in the water. (I think what what is worse for the water quality is the dead cattails now rotting away.) I noticed this spring, I have very little re-sprouting. Love the aerial of the property; nice chunk you have there! We have 7+ acres in the Oregon Blues and are surrounded on three sides by private but accessible timber lands. (Was a gorgeous forest until about five years ago when it was clearcut, but it has been replanted with tamaracks, so it will come back in a few more years.)

    The cattails are good for filtration in the water stream, but a real pain as well creating choke points. When you hire the excavator to build your bugout shelter hire it with a mud bucket as well and clean them out that way.

  • @keithbays2724

    The best way to get rid of cattails is to deepen the pond. They don’t do well when water depth is greater than 18 inches.

    Def love the content, certainly a beautiful home, & family you're building.
    (Read thru some comments, but...). As an old Scout all of the cattail is edible, & is an important wetland filter. But they don't like deep water. We've cleaned or established a number of ponds & farm ponds using a raft/boat & a trash pump, using a vertical intake pipe to move around & dredge out the silt & soil. Works surprisingly well & can get into areas that an excavator can't. Prayers & best wishes...

    Cattail can be used to make ethanol, something like 10 time more than corn. Also, if times get tough, they're edible. They also are very good at cleaning the water. Good to keep at least some going. I wonder if there's something like fish or snails that could keep them in check?

  • @01AceAlpha

    I’m on a municipal committee dealing with invasive plant species. Our biggest problem is Phragmites and cattails are number two. All the environmental experts argue that the only useful effective treatment is glyphosate. The benefit of its use offsets any negative impact. In the USA you have the benefit of getting glyphosate without the surfactant(the surfactant is the dangerous element in the equation.) A pond that small could be treated by wicking or paint brush which would have almost no exposure to surrounding water or beneficial plants.

    Very nice and relaxing. Makes me homesick for the mountains. I grew up south of you about 150 miles. Wish i was back and not on the Gulf Coast!!

    If you cut actively growing cattails off below water level they will drown. Sounds crazy, but it works, and it's an excuse to buy a new tool! It's a Y shaped gizmo with ~30" long blades on it that you throw out and drag back. Works a treat.

    I worked on a project that monitored a couple lakes/marshland around my local area. Almost all of them were beginning to be overgrown by cattails since they were used to filter out the toxins/heavy metals that were present 20 years ago. It was more or less concluded that the only way to fully get rid of them was chemicals, but obviously wasn't really an option. We could spend a year or so manually clearing the cattails but the amount of time, machinery, and manpower required far outstripped the cities budget. Only thing that we can do now is contain them by clearing new growth along the perimeter. However even that is starting to become problematic because of the amount of plant mass cattails continually produce. We are running out of storage space, and no one really want to take them in since they have those toxins/heavy metals.

    The first year is the most important, plant with a gallon of nutrients and also plant near the tree line and work your way inward towards the field .

    Worked on a property in college that had side by sides and dirt trails. In the Oregon winters they turned into mud bogs with foot deep ruts. I hope your roads survive better then ours did.

    You might consider using a crane with drag line to remove the cattails and deepen your pond to improve it's holding capacity and reduce their regrowth.

    Ah cattails. About 10 years ago when I was about 12 years old me and my sister would always go visit my grandfather at his cabin. This cabin was on about a 2 acre pond and one summer while we were swimming as usual he roped me into pulling up all of the cattails. He had grown tired of having the fuzzy particulates that they produce covering his front porch. That’s was a tough job pulling all those out in nothing but my undies! But now it’s just a great memory.

    Cody, I'd use your backhoe and dig out the cattails and deepen and widen the pond. It would be a good reservoir for firefighting and the cattails won't grow in deep water.

    Add aeration to the pond cattails like low oxygen content, add a micro bubbler or use your jet pump to make a small fountain

    Those rock piles are a good thing as you can use for rock walls or if you don't like the look of them can always rent a rock crusher to turn the piles into gravel for surfacing the roads you are building. Could also offer them up to those around you if they are building retaining walls as the rock would make good Gabion wall fill when leveling an area.
