  • I was delighted to be onboard for the first day of full service on the new Manxman ferry from Heysham, England to Douglas, Isle of Man. Join me as we have a look at this beautiful new ship inside and out, and we may even sample a wee lunch in the restaurant. It's sure to be a fun voyage...

    I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
    I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
    I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
    Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
    I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
    WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
    The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
    Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
    DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
    Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
    It's my income, I can't do this for free.
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
    I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
    HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
    Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
    I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

    When I was seven or so years old, my family went to the Isle of Man on a holiday. Just before the holiday was due to end we visited a wishing well somewhere on the island. I threw in a penny (old) and wished that the holiday would never end. The very next day my father asked my sister and I if we would like to stay another two weeks. You can imagine our response. That wishing well is on my bucket list of things to revisit, after 65 years. I look forward to your continuation video.

    A huge well done Steve for clattering through the 80k subs barrier. What an achievement. What a ride! 👏👏👏👏
    Ah, the Isle of Man Steampacket Co. - takes my back to my first trip over there from Heysham in '84 as a Sunderland supporter going to watch my team play in the Isle of Man Football Festival. We sat outside the bar waiting for the doors to open before the ship had even left port then once inside had many a beer and a sing song with a load of Blackburn fans heading over there, great lads who became friends for years afterwards. Beer, football, sun, sea and sand. A cracking holiday.
    As regards that new Manxman, it looks tidy enough but could certainly do with more outdoor space 👍

    As a frequent traveller to the island I can safely say that for the majority of the year, the last place you want to be is outside on deck enduring the full onslaught of the Irish Sea. On board the Ben, outside was mainly frequented by the smokers and the projectile vomiters.

    Just a quick word in defence of the Manxman's rough weather abilities - as a brand new ship her crew had literally never sailed her in rough weather - you got switched to the Ben-My-Chree so that the Manxman and her crew could get out in the mucky stuff and effectively have their rough weather sea trials together. Far from staying in port while the Ben did the dirty work, the Manxman basically spent 24 hours doing laps of the Isle of Man in a storm.... Which of course means next time they can load passengers with confidence that they've safely tackled those conditions. ❤

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I was more reflecting what the locals were saying about it, they seemed quite embarrassed. I thought they would have had plenty sea trials already, but I guess maybe not in rough weather, so it was good practice!

    • @dominicskelton3031
      @dominicskelton3031 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Exactly that - they'd done all the basic shake-down stuff, but you can only do the bad weather stuff when the right weather turns up. And of course the British weather has a sense of humour, so sent the first named storm in ages the day after they entered service.... 😂

    Used to go there from Liverpool as a kid for family holidays in the 70s. Loved the Isle of Man boats. You could lean over the rail in the stern - used to love that. Old brass and dark wood fittings, and massive lounges under the water line. You could hire a small cabin.
    No cafe - nothing like that! Just tea and crisps etc sold through a hatch.
    The journey took about 4 hours each way.
    No cars onboard in those days.
    Obviously this is more luxurious but it was lovely to learn over the rails.

    The first IOM Steam Packet boats were built by Robert Napier on the Clyde. In those days it was the builder, not the shipping line, who had house funnel colours. Napier painted the funnels of his ships red and black. Cunard and IOMSP are, I think, the last two companies to still use Napier's yard colours.

    The Manxman looks cool - apart from the lack of open deck space. It's amazing how ferries have become more like floating shopping malls. Back in the say, when my wife and I first moved to Shetland, the ferry was very much a ship, did little to hide the fact that it was a means of maritime transport, observing maritime customs! Anyway, the "softer" look and approach of today is fine by me.

    For those wondering why Manxman didn't sail in the rough weather, according to Iomspc it had a temporary limit of 26 knots wind speed for entering Heysham Port whilst crews gained more experience manoeuvring large ship in confined space. This will be lifted when the ship starts operating full schedule to replace Ben My Chree probably at the end of September 2023

    Hi Steve Another good one really enjoyed it. In my day I can recall it was the highlight of the Greenock or Glasgow Fair not to go to Millport or Rossie but the Isle of Man from Ardrossan. I remember going to Ardrossan to drop off my brother and the ferry left at 1130pm on a Friday I do not recall seeing anyone sober!. Regards Crawford

      The Irish Sea is notorious for its short steep seas and you won't often see weather conditions as mild as this. Bearing in mind this ship is intended to maintain a regular service in the worst of winter weather I very much doubt regular travellers will be lamenting the lack of open deck space.

    Didn't the Ben-My-Chree have a reputation for not sailing in anything approaching bad weather? The story was that the captain would light a candle on the bridge, and if it blew out then they wouldn't sail.

    The last time I was on the IOM was back in the early 70's...by the time I got on board ship most of the seats were taken...so I found myself a clear spot on deck, dropped my rucksack ( yes I was camping for two weeks ) laid my head down...and promptly went to sleep :-)

    I'm hardly an expert as I'm from the desert but i think you may have been dealing with a boatload of water tight doors which in my experience are usually below the water line, so I guess thats either encouraging or concerning, depending on your personality 😂. You should have told that saucy employee you're at 80k subs! (I know, officials never care about the important things). But most importantly we can start keeping a record now of how many countries you make bike owners nervous in. Two and counting! Fun trip; looking forward to the stormy weather next weekend.

    Like so many others I remember trips to the Isle of Man. Our junior school organised holidays there, and I went on 3 of them. We sailed from Liverpool, and it was always said you got one good crossing and one rough crossing. Lots of deck space and hardly any cars - I think they were slung on. Then went with a friend with their family car. Possibly the first year of the drive-on ferry.
    Interesting to see the replacement bus journey, as my gran lived close to Bare Lane station, so lots of bits I recognised, including the sea front at Bare, where I spent many happy hours swimming. When the tide was in 😂

  • @GLICKMIRE
    @GLICKMIRE 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I am always fascinated by the range of tides in that part of the world. When you were walking, the tide was definitely out. If you happen to think of it and you have the opportunity, it would be interesting to see some high and low tide comparisons. Thanks for a great video!

    Always fancied the ferry to Isle of Man. We live in Preston, not really that far from Heysham, easily accessible from Preston. Funny it's called Manxman, for years Preston Docks had a boat called The Manxman that was used for years as a nightclub, and very popular it was too. Looking forward to the next video.

      That was her predecessor - before car ferries were normal the Isle of Man ferries were small passenger ships, and that Manxman was with the Isle Of Man Steam Packet from the 1950s onwards. 😊

    I've only been to the IoM once myself, about 15 years ago when a mate was living on the island. Caught the ferry from Liverpool, then left on a flight to Belfast. It was a fun trip to a beautiful island, but I'm glad the sea was kind for my crossing. I've heard some horror stories!
