- Edinburgh Airport is the only UK gateway to the Faroe Islands, with a couple of direct flights per week in the summer months with Atlantic Airways. This small, but fantastic, airline operate a small fleet of aircraft including helicopters which are used domestically between the 18 islands as well as maintaining search and rescue duties. Today's video will show you exactly what it's like to fly to the Faroe Islands, including how to get from the remote Vágar Airport (FAE) to the capital city of Tórshavn. Here's my itinerary for the trip:

Hi Steve. Here's a thought for you, having flown to faroes by jet.
Nearly 70 years ago there used to be a pigeon race from the Faroes to England. My dad's cousin won it one year with one of his birds. I believe it's about 630 miles as the bird flies to his loft in Leicester. Even if the birds flew to the nearest mainland instead of a straight line home it was about 350 miles over the water. His bird never raced again having earned his retirement and was kept for breeding. He died overnight aged 25.

Faroe Islands fun facts: A considerable number of knitted Faroese sweaters have been exported with standing orders to the Danish army, specially during the Napoleonic wars, when several thousand sweaters were exported yearly. The agricultural policies of the Faroe Islands, have over the centuries divided the pasture into 463 different land lots. Between 1035 and 1814, the Faroe Islands were part of the Kingdom of Norway, which was in a personal union with Denmark from 1380. In 1814, the Treaty of Kiel transferred Norway to Sweden, whereas Denmark kept its Atlantic territories like the Faroe Islands.
The white on their flag symbolizes the foam of the sea and the pure and radiant sky of the Faroe Islands, while the blue and red colors are reminiscent of other Scandinavian and Nordic flags, representing the Faroe Islands' bonds with other Nordic places. The Faroese language is one of five languages descended from Old West Norse spoken in the Middle Ages, the others being Norwegian, Icelandic, and the extinct Norn and Greenlandic Norse. Faroese and Icelandic, its closest extant relative, are not mutually intelligible in speech, but the written languages resemble each other quite closely.

@@saturnfive3496 Walter Sutherland was the last known Norn speaker and he died in 1850. No one currently speaks Norn. The Shetlands have an Insular Scot dialect with Norn influence, but it's not actually Norn. Orkney also has their own Insular Scot dialect with Norn influence.

Was lucky enough to stop off & visit Torshaven in the Faroes during a cruise
Think I flew once with Atlantic airways back from the Canaries as a replacement to the scheduled airline. The Faroes look a lot like a less crowded rural Wales. There is no excuse nowadays for a cancelled train. You were very unlucky. Very nice video though. Lots of ideas.

My Dad was from Tórshavn originally, he lived there until he met my Mum in a Edinburgh in the 80s and never looked back 😂 Haven’t really been back since my Grandparents died but it’s a spectacular place. Really need to take advantage of flights from Edinburgh and not Aberdeen anymore! This video has given me the kick up the rear to go have a look at flights 😂

Same name as the place my father born in, although the fielding is a little different, on account of having been born in Iceland. Þórshöfn in his case.

@@davidbrown5628 yeah. I think - I may be wrong - it moved to Edinburgh in 2015. I last flew up in 2014 and it wasn’t long after that it moved. Sure it’s still the same twice a week flight from Edinburgh as it was from Aberdeen at the time.

The insane terrain of the Faroe Islands is always a giveaway when I play GeoGuessr Battle Royale. Absolutely incredible! And the tunnel work they've done to tackle the terrain is just as incredible! Eysturoyartunnilin for example, which opened in December 2020, has a length of nearly 37,000 feet or 11,200 m. It connects the island of Streymoy to the island of Eysturoy. It stands out among every other undersea tunnel because it has the world's first undersea ROUNDABOUT! Said roundabout even has ARTWORK installed by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. And after 2030, Suðuroyartunnilin will have a length of 25,000 m or 82,000 ft! For a remote archipelago in the Arctic, they know how to put themselves on the map!
I'm glad you briefly mentioned that the airport was built by the British, because it's an interesting part of their history that the UK decided to occupy them to stop a potential German invasion. British control actually played a role in Faroese identity as the first time the Faroese flag was officially used was in 1940. The Faroese flag was designed in 1919 by Jens Oliver Lisberg and others while they were studying in Copenhagen. The first time it was raised was in June of that year in Fámjin on the occasion of a wedding, however it wasn't officially adopted until the British took over because they didn't want the same flag as German-occupied Denmark to be used. Denmark wouldn't recognize the flag until 1948 when the Home Rule Act passed.

Oh on the roundabout - I had really hoped to go there and even bagged a front seat on the bus for it, but then, of course, the bus went a different, longer route and bypassed it completely! I think the longest tunnel I went through was on arrival into Klaksvík - that was a beauty as well but no Jellyfish Roundabout for me! :(

Were you only there for some 15 hours?
The tunnels are all built and planned by Norwegian firms, denmark hardly has any tunnels, while Noray has thousands, and when they wanted to link island by tunnels, to replace ferries, like we did here in Norway, they contacted Norwegian firms. The blue light is supposed to keep drivers more alert, but the sad thing is, in the Faroes, as in Norway they don't line the tunnels with glassed tiles, which makes them lighter, and easier to clean.
In America, theyv'e tiled their tunnels for 70 years.
@@perperald21 Well we have Long Tunnels built below the Storebælt, and also being flooded at a time, when the sea bottom collapsed and the sea from above flooded the tunnel (Luckily no men was lost by this, but managed to get out!)! Some stupid idiots had put a huge electrical cable through the water-tight door in front of the one tunnel drilling machine, so it couldn't be closed, when actually needed! But it is of course mostly drilling in soft ground, as also most of the new Subway below Copenhagen.
And we Danes are now building an 18 km tunnel below the water to Germany, but with huge finished concrete tunnel elements to be sailed out and sunk into a ditch in the bottom!
Another great video! I was thinking about the airport transfer. I can think of worse places to be a bus driver. You also hit the nail on the head regarding transport reliability. I always breath a sigh of relief when I leave UK airapace because transport becomes a little more reliable. If something goes seriously wrong, it's 99% of the time within our shores. Can't wait for the next video.
So true mate, I don't know what was going on when I landed back in Edinburgh but the rail network was in chaos. The queue at Waverley was huge and every single person was saying their train had been cancelled. You can tell it's getting serious when the managers come out as well and they were quickly swarmed by angry passengers :D

@@steve-marshI've been raging at Scotrail ever since buying an e ticket and being unable to download it. Thought I could sort it out Inverness Station ticket office only to be told "not our problem" so I missed the train I'd booked and had to buy another ticket.
@@colinmacdonald5732 Scotrail is weird in that it doesn't let you print tickets or even transfer them to your smartphone's wallet where they are easy to find, even if you are buying them through a third party like Trainline. They can only downloaded in app and have to be 'activated' before you get on the train. And then, if you are lucky, they might scan and open up the platform gate for you.
@@egpx Last year I purchased e-tickets on LNER with no problem, and this year Southestern have started selling e-tickets, I buy all the rail tickets for the office, the emails come in less than a minute after payment, try using them instead, any train company can sell tickets for anywhere in the country.

They recently had to extend the runway to fit those Airbuses in Vágar airport, Atlantic Airways used to use smaller British-built BAe 146's.

The runway at Vágar is fine for A318 and A319, but is marginal for A320. The extension was built in order to accommodate Atlantic's three A319 aircraft, which they leased as replacements for the 146s. A few years later, their success enabled them to buy their own A320, which can carry about 30 more passengers, but is bigger and heavier and needs a longer runway. They have to manage the A320 quite carefully in order to avoid exceeding their operational limits, but in my experience they do a very good job

@@roblancs I have done so in a PC-12 (Pilatus), but I don't have a transport licence so have never done it in anything bigger, except as a passenger.

Another exotic trip....if you're planning an Iceland trip, some tour companies up there do day trips to Kulusuk in Greenland. I did it 15 years ago, flying out of Reykjavik City airport. Apart from a few day trippers, the rest were expeditioners, so I felt under dressed and under equipped on my day out 🤣

Steve, this actually happened to me on a flight leaving St Maarten in the Caribbean. We started down the runway rather slowly, turned around at the end and disappointed all the people standing by waiting to be blown back by the engines as we took off. Instead, we flew over them and off into the sunset. The was a great video, Steve. What a beautiful area. Cannot wait for part two!

I have had something similar happen.I was flying out of St. Louis (USA) the plane was in line to get on the runway when a bad storm came through, after the visibility had improved, we had to move to the other end of the runway to take off because the wind had shifted.

If your looking for a group of islands to visit you should head to the azores. Its a place I've always wanted to go. Specifically to sete cidades. It's a small town next to a lake which is all in a huge extinct volcano. Anyway great video as usual

Thanks for the views! Change of runway direction during taxi does happen from time to time, but as a passenger, you are more likely to notice it on a small airport where the runway itself doubles as a taxiway.

As a seasoned flier I can honestly say I've never experienced a turn-around on the runway, the only strange taxiing experience that springs to mind was a push back from the terminal using the planes jet engines in the USA - something you won't see today! Lovely video Steve.
Oh that's cool! I only have that on twin otters, but with jet engines no way! Yeah, it was a cool little anomaly to experience and add to the list on this one :)

It's known as a power-back. American Airlines used to use it at Dallas-Fort Worth - their calculation was that the reduction in engine life cost them less money than buying the aircraft tugs they would otherwise have needed. Using power-back meant they could also depart when ready, and never had to wait for a tug. Power-backs are no longer used due to a combination of green and safety rules.
@@hb1338 Hi yes that's correct it was at DFW that I experienced it in a 727. AAL also stopped it because of excessive engine wear due to foreign particle intake into the engine.
I thought that was normal. But I've been used to landing in Greenland. It's smaller than this one.
What a change in weather on departure day, lovely story of the horse. For health reasons I always book extra and have hotels near train/tube stations, but you’re much fitter than me but I couldn’t do with the stress. I can't see if anyone else has commented this already but the "N45SD" you saw arriving from Wick was a small Piper PA-32 that (some - not all) flight tracking websites show hopping its way from Paris to the US. It also stopped in Iceland, Greenland and Goose Bay in Canada. Funny that it showed up on the passenger information screens in the terminal! Looks like they spent the weekend there before resuming their journey. Looking forward to the next part, thanks for adding to my too-long list of places to go!

That's possible because Wick is the airport that most of the small planes crossing the Atlantic use in Scotland

There's not much that I can add to the compliments already given - an excellent video that's so well presented. I was particularly impressed at the video editing surrounding the take-off where you apparently spliced in video of another flight, I assume taken by you previously from the ground but giving the viewer the impression that it was your flight. I really enjoyed this little trip and the glorious harbor in Tor..mumble. I’ve never had to change ends of the runway for the wind, nor had my plane pirouette 180° at one end! I also watch a flight attendant’s channel who informed me that as they’re welcoming you onto the plane they’re also scouting for ABPs, or able bodied persons, they can shove in the exit rows to assist with emergencies so, you’ve got that going for you!😂🎉 Looking forward to your time on the islands. Thanks for the video.

Well done Steve. A few things, i can't believe how big the Faroes actually are, I imagined a place the size of Norfolk Island in Australia. 2ndly, how beautiful it is, more than impressed. And finally just love watching your truly different takes on travel. Not a single business/first class seat in sight (Virgin to Seattle notwithstanding) You travel as I do, with an eye for the different and a willingness to actually get a bit lost, because you never know what you might find. Not always good of course, but worth the effort. Keep them coming mate, I will be back in the UK in 2024 and raring to visit many of the places you recommend.

Good memories! Visited in 2010 and the flights were the adventure. Dublin Copenhagen - Billund - Vagar. Only Atlantic could fly in as they had BAe146/RJ45s with STOL capability, things must have extended with the new terminal. Presiding memory on departure was the RJ getting to the end of the runway on taxi and we were practically turning the nosewheel on the gravel at the end, every inch was used!! Great trip, shame we went to see N. Ireland play and we only got a draw 😢

This was a much more relaxing video to watch Steve, especially compared to the one where you ended up miles from anywhere in eastern Europe in freezing temperatures! In fact it looked rather cool. I hope Atlantic Airways don't drop the route and the low load factors on your flights are not common. They used to fly into Stansted but I see that is no longer on the route network.
Same mate, I really grabbed this one just incase the route gets dropped, but fingers crossed it stays for a while! Aye, this was a bit more relaxing for you AND me! :D

Wow! The Faroes have been on my bucket list for years, but I just haven't got around to it yet. It's interesting that Atlantic Airways only fly to Edinburgh these days, I'm sure at one time they continued that flight down to Stansted, back when they flew BAe 146s. 🤔
Looks like a fascinating place, maybe I need to bump it up the list a bit!
I've been on a few flights from airports with no taxiways meaning the aircraft had to taxi along the runway. I think the most recent was last summer when I went to Skiathos, Greece.
P.S. You HAVE to go to Svalbard. I went about 15 years ago, it was a wonderful trip!
Cheers Andy! Yeah, I think the EDI flight was under threat too so grabbed it while it's still there as who knows what'll happen in future. Oh Svalbard - funnily enough I was just pricing it up yesterday but it was still beyond my means. I can't believe I was all booked up and ready to go when Covid struck!
@@steve-marsh I did my Svalbard trip back in the very early days of Norwegian (so maybe it was a bit more than 15 years ago. 18-20 perhaps?) when their only UK route was OSL-STN. I got there via Oslo and Tromso (also well worth visiting). I remember the flights were ridiculously cheap at the time, so it sounds as though I picked the right time to go! To be honest, I'd never actually heard of Svalbard at the time, but I saw it on Norwegian's route map and thought, "Why not?"! So glad I did. 😊
I guessed you were in the Faroe Islands from your midweek sneak preview Steve, although I thought (hoped?) you had taken the epic Denmark - Faroe - Iceland ferry journey... I have always been curious in these places if you have to mow the grass on your roof, and your video Steve has prompted me to finally Google the answer - apparently yes!
I've long wanted to do that voyage but the price (and availability!) has always been the problem

Loved this one. I didn't have to scream once! And I didn't get the bejabbers scared out of me either. The only thing I kind of had to ease into between the plane just taking off and Landing I don't like that. I did sneak peeks at the same rate as we were going by. Outstanding! I'm used to scottish weather, and I plan to stay for up to 6 months anyway 😉 I've always considered trying this route, as I get the caravan over free or at least very cheap on the day sailings. And it saves me driving by Antwerpen and London plus it cuts a bit of mileage. I'm travelling with my dog Skye, a Golden Retriever, and I've booked a kennel aboard. I'm not keen on leaving him in the van or caravan for 5½ hours without me being able to take him for a walk. If he's not happy I'll consider booking a pet friendly cabin on the way back. BTW it's around €100 cheaper than the cheapest fare on the Chunnel (one way) I left it a bit too late at booking it, so it went up by €50 in the meantime, but i needed things to fall in place before booking.

Hi Steve, please DO NOT encourage people to fly to the Faroe Islands. The barbares there slaughter every year 1000 whales and dolpins, pretend that eat it, but they throw 2/3 away. The beaches are always full of blood. A horrible scene. They are poking a hook in the blow holes to drag them onto the beach They say that it's their tradition, but they have enough other meat to eat, they don't need to slaughter these beautifull creatures. Faroe is a NO GO ZONE! Greetings, Andreas
It's a horrific sight I agree. But all I'm doing is documenting my travels, and I know there are barbaric things going on in almost every country in the world, animal rights, human rights, often swept under the carpet. It doesn't stop me visiting the world I live in, but if my channel was that way inclined, I could easily speak of brutal acts from every single country I have ever visited including my own. I thank you for highlighting the issue, but me going there doesn't make me the bad guy (as some people have instantly decided I am in the comments already, some of which have been offensive and removed/reported instantly)
What do you think happens in the places where our chicken,beef,pork comes from? This is just the way of life in the west and considering countries like the uk,France,Spain,Germany all have far higher populations I can’t help but assume the slaughter committed there is far worse in scale

I do agree with you, but there is human and animal atrocities in every single country I've visited, but never a problem for anyone. If I considered it before I travelled, I'd never leave the house to be honest.
